Cam Newton has retired his signature celebration dance

The dab probably was on its last legs when Panthers owner Jerry Richardson attempted it (if not before then), but it’s officially dead now.

During an interview with WFNZ’s Chris McClain and Jim Celania Thursday, the man who popularized the dance move which became the team’s signature celebrations said it was time to move on.

I have to put that aside,” Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said, via Black and Blue Review. (The full interview is here.)

This momentous news also came with a tease, that he was going to replace it with a to-be-announced celebration for the coming season, or maybe he hasn’t figured it out yet.

“I have time,” he said. “I have until September to find out.”

Of course, there were more weighty matters discussed, namely his post-Super Bowl pouting. It’s been a hot topic since before he sulked off the podium in Santa Clara, and he knows it’s going to follow him until he shows it’s not a defining moment.

“I have to remind people, don’t judge nothing if you have never been in that situation,” Newton said. “I’m not saying what I did was right, I’m not saying what I did is wrong, but I just want people to see it from my vantage point. I’ve learned from it, no doubt I’ve learned from it.”

It would be hard not to, after it was one of the main topics of conversation this offseason. But the fact he’s realized he probably didn’t handle it as gracefully as possible is worth celebrating, right?

Just not with a dab.

  1. I love when players have fun out on the field. You work 365 days a year to stay in top shape and leave it out on the field, you should be able to have a little fun when you do well. He does need to look part when he loses, too, because it comes with the territory as leader of the team. But all in all, Cam is a great football player, a good man, and I love watching him.

  2. His emotions during the post-Super Bowl press conference, while not ideal, are a non-story. The media loves to talk about it, but it was really Cam’s decision not to dive on a fumble in the fourth quarter that should be drawing most of the attention/criticism.

  3. If only he “put it aside” to practice diving on loose footballs, I can’t see that though.

  4. After how he played in the Super Bowl, and out-pouted Jay Cutler afterwards, I’d say this is a good idea on his part. I used to like the guy until his true colors came out post-Super Bowl. Russel Wilson showed, after throwing that interception, how to lose graciously. Take a hint, Cam.

  5. He will do MC Hammers, ‘Can’t touch that”. Like when the ball is on the ground. And if that is not the name of the song, I apologize.

  6. I used to like Cam. After watching him run up and down the sidelines like a big baby, putting a towel around his head, and acting like the biggest tool after the superbowl..doing the “dab” topped it off. Cam, you’re a tool.

  7. “I have to remind people, don’t judge nothing if you have never been in that situation,” Newton said.

Everyone knows what it is like to want something very much and then not have it come to fruition. It is immature to assume only a Super Bowl is the ultimate prize of everyone’s dreams and ambitions. Difference is, Cam, mature people may not be happy about their missed dreams but they don’t publicly behave like spoiled petty children.

  8. nyfcat – You are right. He is a great football player and a good man. And I will never understand why people think he is so evil because he is having fun. This is a game, not a nuclear arms summit or a hostage negotiation. It’s football. Let him – and all the other players – take some joy in their work, including end zone dances.

  9. As long as he is in the league I will never watch a game in which his team is playing. He and his father extorted Auburn and he has been a fraud his entire career.

He should retire now so he can go back to stealing laptops out of dorm rooms in Gainesville.

  10. He’ll come up with something else & he’ll get beat down again because there ain’t no black superman Cam!!! Panthers won’t get back to the Super Bowl this year so go pout Cam you big baby!!!

  11. “Don’t judge nothing if you have never been in that situation.”
Ok, Cam, I won’t judge nothing. Lol I stopped reading after I read that sentence.

  12. Denver should pay Von Miller just for the fact alone that he single-handedly killed the Dab move.

  13. Cam owes absolutely NO ONE an apology or even an explanation, especially the bottom feeders who comment on this site. If you wanna condemn a good person who works harder every day than you ever have, then that says infinitely more about your character than his.

  14. we will know if he truly matured when his contrct is up and see if he asks for the moon ala Luck or is team friendly, like he who shall not be named.

  15. Good, work on those celebrations Cam… Can’t wait to watch him pout this year!

  16. Come on Cam, for all the kids out there that idolize you, do your job. You’ve got a college education, use it. You’re not ghetto, so don’t talk as if you are. Why is that such a hard thing to do?

  17. retiring something that made you look like an bad sport idiot might just be the smartest thing he has done in since he joined the NFL.

  18. Still a self-aggrandizing fraud. Will get exposed again when they don’t go to the sb. Can’t wait to see that interview.

  19. “…especially the bottom feeders who comment on this site…” Yeah, that would include you.

Nice of you to presume that you know how hard anyone else has ever worked. Get over yourself.

  20. Cam lost much of that swagger when he didn’t dive for that loose football in the Super Bowl.

I don’t mind the TD celebrations of any players most times those are fun entertainment. Stop the madness of celebrating every first down or defensive players that have a 8 sec choreographed sack dance.

  21. “I’m not saying what I did was right, I’m not saying what I did is wrong, but I just want people to see it from my vantage point. I’ve learned from it, no doubt I’ve learned from it.”

If he’s not saying it was wrong then there is serious doubt that he learned from it. A simple “I should have handled that better” would put it to bed but instead he comes of as defending his own petulance. That’s not judging, it’s knowing. From ANY vantage point, but his of course.

  22. LOL to those that say maybe he has matured cause he wont do the DAB any more.. No one Matures in 5 months sorry not happening. lmao dumb poeple.

  23. Exhibit A demonstrating that it truly is the deadest part of the offseason.

  24. I’m also retiring my old Office celebration of spiking my laptop after I have a good presentation. Been staying late working on a new one to get ready for Qtr3 Fiscal 2016 close. Every time I send a solid email though, I do a lap around the office with my finger pointed in the air letting my co-workers know I’m better than them. Not changing that one.

  25. And don’t be judging his “business decision” neither if you’ve never lined up as quarterback in a Super Bowl.

True, I should have spelled it out for you that I was specifically referring to athletics.

Although, if you worked a little harder on your comebacks, you might also find the irony in saying “get over yourself” after Panther haters just spent an entire season with their heads up their own hind quarters.

  27. Cam will ALWAYS be known as a coward for running away from that fumble in the Superbowl. Biggest act of cowardice in Superbowl history. Period. Literally cost his team the game.

Can’t stand watching this guy play with all his stupid antics and poor sportsmanship and lack of maturity. From sitting on the sidelines pouting like a child with a towel over his head, to the stupid-beyond-belief Superman celebration, to his cowardice in the Superbowl and his pouting routine – Cam Newton stands as the perfect example of what it means to lack manhood, to be an adolescent trapped in an adult body.

  28. Now maybe he can learn how to lose with grace and to grow the hell up.

Cheaters do what they do – they steal laptops and use other people’s term papers as their own.

It will be interesting to see how this joker performs when he has to play against teams with a winning record instead of his staypuff marshmallow schedule last year playing 13 losing record teams.

  29. I am old school;when you celebrate a TD or just a good play, make it a yeah!! emotional moment.Cam,although a GREAT player, does not celebrate. His dances and dubs are designed to essentially rub it in to his opponents.I don’t call that being a grown up ….only an overgrown child!!

  30. Hey loserw, since you seem to know nothing about football, I’ll let you in on some secret magical numbers that adults like to call a “stat.” Since 2012 the Panthers have the fifth most wins in the league so…yeah. I think Cam is gonna be just fine.

As for the Deadskins…going 9-7 against a schedule that included a grand total of 2 playoff teams (both losses) is not good, even for the NFC Least

Lol he’s a cheater now? Do you idiots ever read what you type out loud so you can see how dumb you sound?

  32. Have a little bit of fun its a GAME. He is learning tho so next year will be interesting. The guy is so under the microscope….guess that is why in life it is best to “fly” under the rader and not bring too much attention to you. Look out when you screw up………..

  33. Is he a dancer or a football player? There’s nothing wrong with celebrating victories at the end of the game, but you don’t need to do it after every single play. No need for defensive players to beat their chest after every “key” stop. The league wants to “ban” hits to the head, but yet in celebration guys on the sideline hit people in the head all the time in celebration. This game gets more unwatchable every year.

  34. All the haters can’t criticize their own QBs for not diving on a fumble in the Super Bowl. Because your team wasn’t good enough to make the Super Bowl.
