NFL mandates that the coin has to flip on the coin flip

For NFL referees, it’s not enough to toss the coin. They have to flip the coin.

A new procedure implemented by the NFL this offseason mandates that on every coin flip before games and before overtime, the coin must turn over while in the air. If the referee tosses the coin and it doesn’t turn over, the ref is to toss it again.

The new rule, revealed on Twitter by former NFL head of officiating Mike Pereira, is obviously a response to the situation that arose in overtime of the playoff game between the Packers and Cardinals. In that game, referee Clete Blakeman decided that his first coin toss before overtime wasn’t fair because the coin failed to flip.

Blakeman made up the determination that the coin had to flip on its own, but now it’s part of the NFL’s rules. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who complained after the Packers lost to the Cardinals that he should have been allowed to re-call the flip, will be disappointed to learn, however, that the new rule doesn’t allow for the visiting team captain to call it again: When the ref re-flips the coin, the original call of heads or tails will stand.

100 responses to “NFL mandates that the coin has to flip on the coin flip

  1. How long did it take the NFL/NYC Office to figure this out?

Someone has to explain to Goodel that the requirement for INTEGRITY applies to him more than anyone else in the league.

  2. Now Congress will want to get involved…. They will have special hearings and determine the coin must flip in a forward motion at turn 6 times before landing.
(After spending $8 million on studies)

  3. This rule only became necessary because Aaron Rodgers was crying after losing to AZ. Anytime anything goes wrong he has an excuse where he is not at fault and crying about the coin toss was the best excuse he could come up with at the time. So the NFL has to make up silly rules now to accommodate Rodger’s childish, poor sportsmanship behavior.

  4. It is a travesty of justice when rules don’t suit my Packers. So we get them changed. Like this one. How else are we gonna compete? We know we deserve preferential treatment, because, well, we just do, we’re the Green Bay Frikken Packers, for crying out loud! We’ve only got a hundred thousand people here! We’re entitled. We are special. We ride the short bus. Give us a toss we like or we will whine. If it doesn’t flip, you must acquit. Unless your name is Steven Avery.

  5. What is it called again? “COIN FLIP”. Thanks NFL, got it. Somehow some idiot refs missed the memo, hopefully they got it now..DUH

  6. cant wait til the first delay of a game while we have instant replay to decide if the coin flip was legit, good god they have taken the best sport in the world and turned it into a farce

  7. Think the league should go back to “midget tossing” instead of “coin tossing”.

Give Russell Wilson a chance to play.

  10. Is Aaron Rodgers going to start crying like a baby this rule would have existed. The referee did exactly what he should have, re-flip. But now they have to clarify everything so you don’t get any more complaints like a certain Green Bay quarterback.

  11. He wanted to “re-call” the coin toss? For what pupose? Does he think statistical probability is different in Arizona then the rest of the Universe?

  12. Earth to the NFL owners: you can get much better leadership for $45M per year.

Virtually every experienced CEO covets the NFL commissioner’s job and would accomplish a heck of a lot more than to clarify the procedures for a proper coin flip.

  13. I don’t know which is worse… the fact that their was no rule in place in the first place, or the Minny trolls.

Better solution NFL, get rid of the overtime coin flip and give each team the ball on the opppisite 35… like college but with a longer field of gain to start.

Only the NFL would need a rule to clarify the flip of a coin

    —-

Only the NFL would screw up the coin flip.

  15. If the coin doesn’t flip then it is not a coin flip.
Under this knew rule at what point is it considered a flip? One half of a turn? A full turn? A turn and a half?
I expect this rule to be clarified after the season when there is failed coin flip.

  16. Because in language, words have meaning. So, inherent in the term “coin flip”, would the coin FLIPPING! Sometimes the NFL acts so stupidly they can’t get out of their own way.

a coin flip must include a flip”, indeed. Friggin’ Bozos.

  17. Hmm, so in this day and age “miffed” = “complained”. I’ll have to remember that in the future, although I think Webster would disagree.

On another note, a second coin flip in overtime in the NFL occurs about as often as a Vikings fan gets a second date with the same girl, so I can understand the confusion.

What happens if the coin lands in the grass and it is vertical?

    ——

There is as much chance of that happening as having fewer than 10 vike trolls making inane (and rarely funny, although that in ted we trust guy occasionally gets in a good one) comments on a Packers story.

  19. I don’t see why everyone is criticizing the NFL here. It’s a super rare occurrence, but it did happen last year, and better to have a rule in place than to have some sort of controversy if it happens again. Smart move IMO.

  20. It is inane and insane that they had to make that a rule. Why don’t they make it a rule that referee’s have to wear shoes?

  21. I have been agonizing over this for years. Thanks to that great and wonderful Roger Goodell, priorities finally are being addressed.

  22. So when the official goes to re-flip the coin, must he place the coin in his hand with the same side up as the previous flip?

If yes … then there won’t be a reason for the visiting team captain to recall the flip.

If the official DOES place the coin in his hand – different side up – then the team captain should have the option of recalling heads or tails.

  23. Does the ref have to make a football move for the flip to be complete?

The rule became necessary because the bozo couldn’t flip a coin.

  25. “What happens if the coin lands in the grass and it is vertical?”

In the regular season, the game just ends in a tie. In the playoffs it becomes a field-goal shootout.

    ummmm
let me tell you a story about a ref named Phil Luckett and a thanksgiving game between the Stoolers and Lions…

  27. Poor GB. If only your defense didn’t suck so bad, nobody would’ve made such a big deal out of a coin not flipping.

  28. The fact that it’s called a coin flip wasn’t enough clearance for the refs? No wonder they don’t have an idea what a catch is.

  29. As usual, the Packers have to get screwed in the playoffs or a game with playoff implications (Fail Mary) in order for common sense to come down from NY.

  30. Another NFL rule to be inconsistently applied. Next will be coaches challenges and replays on coin flips. The NFL has become such a joke run by a bunch of corrupt buffoons.

  31. What if it half flips in the air, and then landing, it unflips itself? Is a half flip a flip?

What if it doesn’t flip in the air, but bounces when it lands causing it to flip. Is a bounced flip a flip?

If an unflipped coin lands on wet grass, does it need to be thoroughly dried before being reflipped?

Does warming a coin cause it to flip more? Does cooling it cause it to flip less?

We need rules spelled out and fines or suspensions given for cheating.

Maybe the NFL should have a study, but not tell anyone the results of that study? Then they can tell us the study confirmed what they believed all along.

  32. This rule only became necessary because Aaron Rodgers was crying after losing to AZ. In fairness to Rodgers, the coin didn’t flip at all on the COIN FLIP. Pretty remarkable that he even saw that, and he immediately called out the ref.

And all QBs whine to the refs. The better QBs get more notice/TV time/etc because they are on the field more with longer drives. I don’t agree with it either but let’s not act like Rodgers is the only NFL player that whines for calls, they all do it, at all positions in both sides of the ball

  33. Ted Wells hired Exponent to recreate the coin flip and achieve the desired “heads” that Commissioner Goodell and the Foul 32 requested. Four days of testing, 13 days of review by NFL lead counsel, and $1.3 million later, Exponent delivered the predetermined conclusion…”The coin must flip”. Jerrah Jones has given 13 interviews supporting the fine work of Exponent.

  34. By definition it is supposed to flip. Kind of axiomatic. The NFL has trouble with this though as shown by not understanding that the definition of arbitration includes fairness and unbias.

  35. A multi billion dollar business that can’t get a simple coin flip right.

Yet they seem to think the taxpayers should give them billions more to build themselves stadiums.

    Screw the nfl

  36. This is just the NFL giving Clete Blakeman a mouth hug for the solid work he has done over the last few years with the Patriots. Odd that the Patriots have won 70% of their games over the last 15 years but cant seem to win when Blakeman is the ref. The biggest example being the fiasco on MNF against Carolina where Blakeman decided the Pass Interference flag on the last play of the game should be picked up, just cuz… And he also played a prominent role in deflategate.

So when Blakeman stepped outside of the rules and made it up on the fly with the coin toss, like he did in picking up another officials’ flag for pass interference, the NFL decided they needed to make it appear that Blakeman was correct in what he did, and a new rule needed to be written. Thanks NFL. Integrity and all of that jazz…

    __________________

What idiot refs are you referring to exactly? It has happened 1 time ever and the ref re-flipped it.

  38. This looks like another NFL attempt at convincing people that they are on top of things. Instead, it shows they are focused on minutia and are not capable of dealing with the important issues.

  39. Coin flip needs to be away with.

Team with the most all-purpose yards in regulation gets the choice to kick off OR decide which end zone they want to defend. If all purpose yards happen to be tied, suggest rushing yards, if tied, QB total yards, etc….

To leave this up a coin – is ridiculous.

  40. This just seems like common sense, but leave it to the NFL to have to make a rule about it. If some moron official can’t even do a proper coin FLIP, then how can you trust him to make calls at game speed.

  41. And threaten to fine the refs if it doesn’t flip.
That will get it to flip every time.
If it was a player who flipped it instead, oh you bet he’d be fined if it didn’t flip!

  42. When you complain about coin flips, the football gods take notice. Eli manning would never fathom such behavior.

He requested a recall of a non-flip…for strategic reasons, which he explained quite clearly.

Was this a silly thing for Aaron Rodgers to complain about after a tough playoff loss? Absolutely!
He should have just bit his tongue and moved on.

It’s still a long way off from torturing a 4 year old.
Oh wait, torturing a 4 year old and then playing the victim.
Excuse me, torturing a 4 year old, playing the victim and then extorting his employers to give him a raise.

    I could go on.
    Should we discuss charity organizations!?!
