NFL forces Patriots to wear numbered jerseys at practice

AP

For the last few years, Patriots coach Bill Belichick has had his team practice in the summer without numbered jerseys. But this year, the NFL put a stop to the practice.

Mike Reiss of ESPN reports that the NFL instituted a new rule requiring all players to wear jersey numbers while on the field for Organized Team Activities and mandatory minicamps. The rule was put in place to make it easier to monitor compliance with rules regarding player practices, including that injured players should not be practicing.

Belichick liked having his players practice without jerseys early in the offseason program because he thought it enhanced communication between players, forcing them to get to know each other by looking at more than just a jersey number. It’s a tactic Belichick learned from studying Hall of Fame Steelers coach Chuck Noll, who always had his players wear jerseys without numbers in practice.

It’s the second consecutive year that the NFL has changed a rule regarding jersey numbers in response to something the Patriots did; last year the league changed the rules about eligible receivers wearing ineligible numbers after the Ravens complained about a trick play the Patriots used.

  1. Harbaugh can be heard yelling “deception”! Looks like another loss of draft picks, fines and suspensions coming. TB12 will get a year off to level the playing field in the afc.

  2. Of course nobody told Belichick that the number on the back had to be the same number that the player wears during the season.

  3. I’m sure the Patriots aren’t the only team who does this. And they shouldn’t be the only one who does this. Little tactics like this are why chuck knoll and Bill belichick are legends. It’s not a coincidence that they’ve won a lot of Super Bowls. But it is a shame that the NFL takes the time to make up this rule just to ruffle the feathers in NE for the sake of doing. Having a team go to 6 straight AFC Championships isn’t good for parity

  4. If Belichick wants the players to get to know each other he should keep them around for more than 2-3 years.

  5. Too bad the NFL didn’t put as much effort into correcting the erroneous PSI levels or investigating a certain player who had HGH delivered to his home inFlorida in his wife’s name.

Science proves there was no tampering.

  6. How does this coach keep coming up with genius ways to coach?

    Cuz he’s a genius.

The NFL (aka Jets, Ravens, Colts) will do whatever they can to bring parody with their inferior coaches.

Bill just keeps coming up with ways to OUT COACH the others.

  7. The NFL, once again, pushes form over substance. This is a typical management response where some weak-minded person with power dictates prcedures not to improve performance, rather, to give them the illusion of control.

  8. Seems like this would be a great team building experience having to learn names and faces of your teammates. Unfortunate that this rule is in place now.

The Headline should read, “NFL forces another BS rule on the Patriots to try to slow them down because the other coaches aren’t as smart as Bill. And this is America. Everyone deserves a trophy!!”

They should just let all teams win once every 32 years. Losers

  12. Do other teams use unnumbered practice jerseys? Is there actually reason to believe that injured players have been practicing at OTAs? I don’t think ether of those are the case. Pats players don’t seem to get injured at OTAs/minicamp at a different rate than other teams.

This isn’t an entirely unreasonable change but it hardly seems necessary, and it sure seems like it is someone screwing specifically with the Pats.

  13. If the Pats are the only team to practice without jersey numbers and Belichick says it’s to enhance communications, where did the NFL get the idea that the practice could be used for more underhanded reasons?

  14. What a pant load. It’s a team building measure. The first of what will no doubt be many nit picking shots fired in NE’s direction for filing that amicus brief. Could the league be any more transparent?
    A Giants fan

  15. Somehow, somehow the league under Goodell HAS to find a way to stop the Patriot dynasty. Given the BS with Deflategate, the owners have obviously mandated this approach to their puppet commissioner.

Alas, the much smarter Belichick will always be ten steps ahead of Roger and the non-Kraft billionaires, and the Pats will continue to dominate the other teams in the NFL as long as Bill continues to coach.

This from a Panthers’ fan who hates the way the league tries to cripple the Patriots. But that’s how Roger “Mr. Integrity” Goodell earns upwards of $40,000,000 a year.

  16. It’s ok… They have jersey numbers, but not the correct jersey numbers for each player. The NFL can try as they might, but you cannot outsmart BB.

  17. Wow, everyone who works at 345 Park Ave. N.Y. must be miserable…

I love the standard the pats haters apply to what constitutes cheating. The pats do creative things like no numbers during off season practice or the eligible/ineligible receiver formations that are completely legal. The league then changes the rule or implements a new rule to make it illegal. The haters then say they were cheating.

Here’s a hint……if they have to change a rule or create a new one to make something illegal, that means it wasn’t illegal previously. It’s called common sense.

  19. So there was no rule about wearing numbers at practice before this year? The other teams probably complained that not wearing numbers gives the Pats an edge so the NFL changed the rules yet again to try and take away any edge the Pats might have over the rest of the league.

  20. So what numbers The Patriots 90 players wear during the off season practices is suddenly important to the NFL. Seems silly considering that after mandatory cuts only 53 players are allowed to be on the final roster. Some of the 90 players will never play a single down in an actual NFL game. I kind of like the idea of making the players earn their numbers. I also like the other posters idea of giving them all the same number. That was brilliant.

Now on to the numbers that the NFL doesn’t want anyone to see. The PSI readings that were obtained during the 2016/2016 season during cold/rainy outdoor games. That information is from actual televised games and the NFL is still hiding those numbers. These practices are to get ready for the 2016/2017 season and the PSI numbers from last season are still secret.

The PSI numbers should have been released prior to the 2016 draft where The Patriots were cheated out of their 1st round pick. Keeping this PSI information secret proves that the information vindicates The Patriots and Tom Brady. If the information helped make the NFL case to suspend Tom Brady and confiscate multiple draft picks, the PSI numbers would have already been officially released and/or leaked to the media. Intelligent people that can understand 7th grade science already know that the data shows that The Patriots never tampered with any footballs. Which is why the NFL is keeping it secret.

  21. Puff of Air, Warm Gatorade and now Jersey Numbers…Patriots are in all your kitchens’ and eating you out of house and home!

You guys are soft as puppy poo! So much fun listening to the whines and whimpers of the trolls!

If you can’t beat’em…make up a weak excuse and rally around it..Hence, you live in the Loser’s Circle. Enjoy!

    See you in the playoffs…again!

  22. Don’t the pats have a player rep on the team to combat rule violations like that? Talk about micromanaging.

  23. I suppose it’s possible this rule was implemented for legitimate reasons, and not simply to screw with the Patriots…..but it seems more than just coincidence that the league is adopting rules that apply only to procedures which the Patriots follow. And when that suspicion is accompanied by motive (I think we all know how Roger Goodell feels about the Patriots, especially after they filed the amicus brief), it seems to me to be an open and shut case that the NFL is targeting the Patriots.

  24. The Ravens violate the same rule regarding practice contact twice and nobody cares. Falcons pump in sound crickets, Browns illegally text, nothing to see here, the Broncos have a real cheating history and nobody cares and mentions it in Denver stories. Heck, even the Colt’s footballs can test below the legal PSI in the same game the Patriot’s footballs did and nobody cares. The Patriot’s don’t have practice numbers for team building reasons and the world is coming to an end to Patriot haters. It’s is really getting very pathetic how Patriot’s haters complain about anything the Patriot’s do. Then again, it’s painfully obvious that they are so full of jealousy that they feel the need to comment on such a non-story like this. Oh, and they act like their team has never cheated because that is just what haters do. Keep believing Goodell’s lies and living in denial hypocrites. Vegas has us as Super Bowl favorites so enjoy another season of more domination.

  28. So… It’s ok that Pittsburgh did it for years… but the Patriots do it and they change the rules… yet again… good grief charlie brown.

  29. I remember when the league actually seemed to be proud of successful teams, and celebrated them.

Instead of trying to make everyone average and squashing innovation.

  30. Love how all the haters missed the entire Chuck Noll part of the article. Must have been too busy finally reading up on 9th grade chemistry.

  31. I could see wearing numbers if it was open to the fans and reporters, but if it is a close practice who really cares.

  32. Not a Pats hater or lover, but the fact that this was done back in the 70’s and 80’s and is now being copied 30 years later. Now the NFL doesn’t like it. The NFL says that they have to wear a number. I would give them all the same number and make it the same color as the jersey and put the number on the inside of the jersey just to spite the NFL. Either that or I would sew a very, very small number under the armpit of each jersey.

  33. Before you haters judge and you will ask yourselves this question: Do other teams have this issue? If the answer is yes then where is the league in regards to the other teams?

Pats cheating and bending the rules. I’ll say this again in a few days
    ————————————-

of course you will, you’ve just proved you don’t need any reason beyond hearing the word “Pats”

  45. It amazes me that there are still individuals that can read postings which state that science explains that The Patriots and Tom Brady never tampered with any footballs and still click on the thumbs down button. I am equally amazed by all the “cheater” comments. I’m beginning to believe that goal posts have more brains than many people.

So here is a real life example that should drive home the point:
Anyone that has ever driven across a bridge located in a state that experiences cold weather has probably noticed the spaced seams or breaks in the road. The breaks are covered with a metal plate that is separate from the road surface.

These breaks in the road are called “expansion joints”. They are put there intentionally by engineers to allow bridges to expand and contract when the weather gets hotter and colder. Bridges will expand when the weather is hotter and the bridge with contract when the weather is colder. The expansion joints allow these changes to occur without damaging the road surface.

Now someone would have to be intentionally stupid to understand that temperature can change the spacing between the molecules making up the steel in bridges while simultaneously denying that temperature can affect the spacing of the air molecules inside footballs.

These individuals have to accept that temperature can change the size of a steel bridge that spanning a river while believing that temperature can’t make a small pressure change to the air in a football. And these individuals believe this because the NFL told them to. While numerous scientists from universities across the country have officially and publically informed court and the media that the weather explains that The Patriots and Tom Brady did not tamper with any footballs.

  46. So upon your reasoning we are the only team that does not play within the rules. Meanwhile the Colts for an example had a gauge and need;e on the sidelines during that game. Hey that is against the rules to. But keep your blinders on and don’t let the truth overwhelm you

  47. You guys realize teams in college and the NFL have been running practices without jersey numbers about as long as football has been a thing, right? I can understand why the NFL wants to make sure that no one is exploiting it but some coaches like to erase all the bias in their own mind and their coaches minds and making them look at the play and the player only. I’m not a Patriots fan but I don’t see why this is a Patriots story, this is something they came up with. The article even mentions Chuck Noll doing the same thing decades ago..

  48. To be honest, this likely had zero to do with any other team and was a complaint from the media. The media is _constantly_ complaining about not knowing who’s out there due to lack of numbers on jerseys. Because, you know, OTA’s are for the media…not for teams to start preparing for the season.

  49. Belichick learned this from Chuck Noll who became the HC of the Steelers in 1969, I believe. So it’s been fine to practice without #’s for possibly 47 years. NE does it, so it gets changed. Typical.

Tuck Rule was used against NE in favor of the Jets and no one cared. When it benefitted NE it was changed.

Defensive backs used to be able to play physically until NE kept beating PEDton Manning and his soft receiving core. Guess what? Rules changed.

Ineligible/eligible receives? The play where the refs announced to the Ravens’ players and coaches who was ineligible? The play where the announcer blared throughout the stadium who was eligible? The play where 70K fans in the stands and millions more at home knew exactly what was going to happen? Yup! Changed.

    Now this.

The punishment was based on the clamoring of owners of inferior teams that cried and cried because of their inability to win (That includes Goodell and his allegiance to the Jets). Again and again and again, if you can’t beat the genius on the field, change the rules, make up violations and take away draft picks to help the mentally disadvantaged teams. From Peyton, Polian, Fisher, the Competition Committee, Spygate, walk through taping lies, Ravens and Harbaugh’s inability to think, Indy and former Jets league employees bogus stings, Goodell and the league being caught red-handed lying by the court, to today’s jersey subject, it is all, and will all ever be about, the inferiority of those who cannot compete with Belichick and Brady. It must really suck for the majority of you Patriot haters. I’ll leave you with this lead up to the season – Julian Edelman has more career PLAYOFF touchdown passes than all of the quarterbacks on all of the rosters of all of the other teams in the AFC East – COMBINED!!!!!!! Even if you include Fitzpatrick! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  80. How dare the NFL tell Bill Belichick what he can and can’t do at OTA’s. This is disgusting. If he doesn’t want the players to wear numbers at practice, why can’t he? This appears just part of the ongoing vendetta against the greatest coach of all time, with the intention of pissing him off.

Then they have the glorious history of miracle drug cures that resulted is men of such fine character like ray Lewis and Terrel Suggs recover from injuries in miraculous time. Deer antler spray, really Baltimore fans? How long did it take Suggs’ wife and child to recover from him pouring bleach on them? Then you have a team that has a press conference where Ray Rice’s wife takes blame for getting herself knocked out. If you would just press the reset button and clear your mind of the single incident from a single game played almost 10 years ago, where a memo indicated that a camera needed to be moved to a different location within the stadium.
The film from that game was destroyed by the NFL so that no teams, including The Patriots could ever benefit by watching it. Destroying the film also ensured if The Patriots kept an undisclosed copy they would have risked having Roger Goodell over punish them again.

So how do you reconcile in your mind that a film that was never watched allowed a team win 4 Superbowls?

You may also want to consider a few facts which you apparently overlooked when you wrote you posting:
Tom Brady and The Patriots won the Superbowls in 2001, 2003 and 2004. That means that 3 of the 4 Patriot Superbowl wins were prior to the 2007 Camera in the Wrong Location incident. The Patriots lost a 1st round draft pick in 2008 for not following a memo.
A strange punishment that was clearly aimed at creating league parity Roger Goodell made the penalty contingent on how the Patriots performed during 2007 season. Instead of selecting a punishment that he felt was fair he instead created a contingent punishment that would punish the Patriots based on their success in the 2007/2008 season. ——————————————————-
You disappoint me. I thought you could regurgitate the hate and make it somewhat factual….but I guess not. For your information, when an east coast division plays a west coast division, each team get two home and two away games. It has been that way for a long time. It is the same formula for all teams. Home and away against your division, and split home and away with one AFC and on NFC division. The last two games are determined by your record. You truly are a simpleton.

  111. It just amazes me how people don’t use their brain and will just allow any headline to manipulate the way they think. If the NFL has done anything “right” since Goodell took over its that they use the media to spin and to gain public opinion very effectively. How many posters had to write how the patriots got caught “cheating” again when in the darn article it states that it’s a NEW rule? For the NFL, it’s too easy. For me, it’s pretty sad that logic and reason and fundamental reading skills get pushed aside for fandom and idiocy.

  112. A worthwhile reminder that Goodell INSTANTLY changed the rules when the Ravens complained about the Patriots doing something that was LEGAL

NFL bylaws require rule changes to be considered by the competition committee each off season (the same competition committee that KEPT the Tuck Rule on the books by the way Raiders fans)

Goodell and the other owners will go to any length to change the rules to put the Patriots at a disadvantage.

The fact that they changed the rule mid-season is proof that the NFL League Office and Commissioner THEMSELVES have no integrity and are unfair

And unless Goodell has “unquestioned integrity” by the NFL owners’ own rules, he cannot be Commissioner

(Of course – these guys all flaunt the fact that the rules don’t apply to them)

  113. The Patriots could be reading books to blind kids during their OTA’s and the NFL will make a rule against that…just because the other 31 teams are not doing it too.

  114. Maybe the Patriots PFT page should be renamed “wack-a-troll”.

Since every time an article mentioning “The Patriots” is linked on the main PFT page the casual bandwagon fans of a few of the other 31 teams can’t resist posting nonsense while making false claims about The Patriots. It’s obvious that these trolls do not have any football knowledge when they resort to using various buzzwords all beginning with “cheat…”.
It is more obvious that these trolls obtain all their news information while standing in line at the supermarket check-out lane.

It never seems like a fair argument when the trolls come armed with the same tired lies while the faithful Patriots fans, with the help of the intelligent fans of the other 31 teams, fight back the trolls with facts and science. It also reminds me of a bug-light on a summer night.

  116. Super Bowl 50 needs an asterisk. NFL refused to investigate Manning & his use of HGH and used two referees who were a combined 14-0 when referring Bronco games. This was all done to throw road blocks in the way of the Pats winning another Super Bowl. The NFL is out to get the Pats and have demonstrated a crazed hatred toward the organization.

    ————————————————————-

A quick internet search for “how nfl schedules are determined” would have prevented you from once again posting false information about The Patriots. You could have found the following in about 10 seconds:

” A formula determines each team’s opponents every year, and a rotating schedule ensures that every team plays each of the other 31 at least once in a four-year period.”
    ——————————

But wait, there’s more. In the 16 years of the Belichick era the Patriots have had 7 post bye home games: 3 against the oft beaten Bills, 1 each against the woeful Fins, a .500 Denver team, a .300 Dallas team and a .562 Ravens team. As far as games against the West go, in all but 1 of BB’s seasons when they drew a weighted optional AFCW opponent it was whoever won the division. That has led to 6 games @ Denver, 3 @ S,D., 3 @ K.C. and 2 @ Oakland. In order for the Pats to play more games against the 2 West Coast teams in the conference Oakland and S.D. would need to win the division more often. Pats fans would be more than happy to see them go to either of those cities rather than Denver.

But then chippybeachgamecrash knew all that before she posted.

  120. Can’t beat the Patriots? That’s okay. Just claim they cheated! It doesn’t have to be real. It doesn’t even have to make sense. Just make anything up and the haters will believe it.

That’s true. But four SB wins since 2000 is better than any of the other 31 teams. So it can qualify as a dynasty.

There are many rules to prevent dynasties. The draft order, salary cap, punishments based on success. Punishments based on cold weather events. New rule about eligible receivers. And now a new rule about numbered jerseys.

Extremely funny and it would be funnier if it wasn’t so close to the truth.

Here is another weather related thing that the haters would believe…

Gronk did not participate in last weeks OTA’s because it was his turn to man Tom Brady’s weather controlling station, which sits on the top of Mount Washington. The secret weather controlling station which the Patriot haters must be convinced exists that allowed Tom Brady to set the outdoor temperature in Foxboro MA at 49 degrees on January 18, 2015 when The Patriots played The Colts. Patriot haters must also believe that Tom Brady scheduled rain that day. This is the only possible explanation that doesn’t contradict proven science while also blaming Tom Brady for deflating footballs.

Gronk turned up the wind during Thursday’s OTA’s, at the request of Bill Belichick, so The Patriots could practice the passing and kicking games while dealing with the wind.

  125. Easy… teams simply make practice jerseys with sewn on numbers that are the same colour – or very similar – to the jersey colour.

Complies with NFL rules… and allows players to get to know each others faces rather than numbers.

It’s not the weakest division in the league over the last 15 years. It’s middle of the pack statistically. Don’t forget the Jets did go to the AFC championship twice. The Patriots dominate the other divisions with about the same winning percentage they beat the AFC east and often don’t go better than 4-2 in the division.

Also, you are right that one Super Bowl in the last 10 years isn’t a dynasty but 10 AFC Championships, 6 Super Bowl appearances and 4 wins in 15 years is. You have to admit they have been great for a long time.

  130. It’s been a common practice since the beginning of the NFL. It’s just smart. The NFL is changing the rule, because they don’t want people letting injured players practice, but that has nothing to do with why teams do this. Stupid to change this rule. Makes no sense.

  131. Not sure who are bigger fools, the hater/trolls that obviously post twisted facts and outright lies to bait Pats fans(under multiple screen names), or the Pats fans that engage them all night after doing all this research. Wake up boys and girls.

I’m n0t sure that one SB win in the past 10 years qualifies as a “dynasty. ”

    —————————————————————

That’s true. But four SB wins since 2000 is better than any of the other 31 teams. So it can qualify as a dynasty.

There are many rules to prevent dynasties. The draft order, salary cap, punishments based on success. Punishments based on cold weather events. New rule about eligible receivers. And now a new rule about numbered jerseys.
(I probably missed a few of the Patriot specific dynasty preventing rules – someone else can complete the list)
    _______________________________________

Tuck rule used against NE was fine. As soon as it helped NE it was gone.

Defensive backs used to be able to play tight coverage until NE kept beating PEDton Manning and the soft Colts’ offense. Who likes the PI rules now? The only receiver that can be touched is Gronk. He can be gang tackled on every play.

Strategically placing refs and replay officials has also become the norm for this and upcoming SB’s

  133. A real dynasty would be like the Miami Hurricane baseball team going to the collage world series round every year for the last 44 years straight. Today the Miami Canes eliminated the team from Boston Collage.

  134. Commissioner Goodell, you’ll never be as smart as Bill Belichick. Nor will you be able to get under his skin.

So why not just face reality and admit it.

  135. Pi, irrational numbers, imaginary numbers and decimals/fractions all come to mind. Random numbers – reach into the box and get a number.

As long as we have Bill Belichick and players that get the Pats way we, Pats fans, have the best dynasty in the NFL.

It must be tough to be a Dolphins fans and then be able to ignore all the infractions your team is Guilty of. Then again, like so many Dolphins fans, you would rather act as a self righteous hypocrite just like the fans of 31 other teams. Sad! How fun was that last Super Bowl parade??

  137. I’m not a Patriots fan but plain and simple stuff like this all stems from owners complaining about New England actually having a coach that coaches. I mean Chuck Knoll does it for decades and no issues whatsoever yet now it’s a problem. No wonder coaching turnaround is so high in the NFL. Can you make their jobs any harder than literally banning any method that works just because others didn’t think of it.

  138. New NFL rule that would be better than the practice jersey numbering rule. This rule should be immediate and retroactive. The integrity of the NFL is at stake.

If the NFL does not publically release the PSI information from the previous season by the time of the draft then if any team that was made to forfeit a draft pick based on football PSI then the following compensatory draft picks must be awarded. (These special compensatory draft picks can be traded if the team desires)

To make up for not having a drafted player on the team’s roster for a full season, the team is compensated in the next draft as follows:
The team is compensated by receiving the first overall pick in the same round that the forfeited pick was for. The team also keeps their normal pick for that round of the draft. So unless the team trades a pick they would have 2 draft picks in the same round of the next draft.

If the PSI information is not publically released by the first regular season game of the following season then the team is also awarded the second overall pick in the same round that the forfeited pick was for. The team also keeps the normal pick and the additional pick that was awarded after the previous draft. So unless the team trades a pick they would have 3 draft picks in the same round of the next draft.

The AFCE was the winningest division in football again last year. All divisions finish 12-12 against themselves so the measure of one division’s strength vs another’s is avg wins per team. Here they are by division for the last 10 years:
    AFCE 8.45
    AFCN 8.28
    NFCE 8.08
    NFCN 8.08
    NFCS 8.03
    AFCS 7.63
    AFCW 7.63
    NFCW 7.63

Fun Fact: In 6 games NE lost as many games in division (2) each of the last 3 year as they did in 10 to the rest of the league.

Fun Fact 2: In the Brady/Belichick era NEhas a .769 win % in division and a near identical .754 outside of it.

Fun Fact 3: NE would be better off in the AFCN where in spite of only playing the 1st place team 2 out of every 3 years they enjoy a winning % of .800. Can only imagine what that % would be f they had more games against the Bengals and Browns

Facts are troublesome things for Pats haters.

Some silly west coast band wagon fan of some irrelevant team is finally joining the discussion but failed to read the article or any of the above postings which show that the “cheat” postings only demonstrate that the posters are ignorant of all facts.

  142. Starting to see why the same moronic Pats Fans hate Miami so much. This year alone the Florida Panthers eliminated the Boston Bruins from making the playoffs. Btw, thanks for gifting us Reilly Smith something north of 20 goals. Next was Miami Heat eliminating playoff hopes for the Celtics. Then the Dolphins crush Tom Brady to take their home field away in the last game of the season. And now just a few hours ago another Miami team beats the crap out of the Boston College baseball team. I see why New England fans are big talkers…that’s all they have.

  143. Beach – if you were an actual fan the Dolphins you would be on their page instead of The Patriots page. Unless the real Miami fans are sick of seeing you post the same thing over and over “that team kung foo no good…dolphins beat that team kung foo!”

So you are saying that the Dolphins are the Cubs of the NFL?

If the time ever comes that even a single Patriot fan make it their job to post under Dolphin articles then you will know that The Dolphins are relevant again. Until that time the Dolphin fan will be here under every Patriot related article several times per day paying tribute to Tom Brady.

  145. Beachsidejames – yea, thats all we have – big talk…. and 9 championships since February of 2002. How many championships does Miami have in that time period? I’ll bet it’s less.

Oh I’m sorry….less means your number is smaller than ours.

  146. I can’t wait to hear what Suh is going to do to Brady this season. Just maybe he will actually do something this year.

  147. Big talkers.. All Mouth. No team is afraid of the Patriots anymore and all the Miami teams are beating the crap out of all the New England teams. Sent your Boston College Baseball team home crying like little girls today. Btw, how many games is Brady suspended for cheating?

  149. Is there anything that Patriots’ fans won’t whine about? The Patriots aren’t victims. After Spygate, of course the league was going to look at the Patriots more closely. It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, and the Patriots’ fans shouldn’t be offended by it.

  157. A one cheat in 15 yrs hardly constitutes a culture

Your are a typical hater spewing venom without facts. I do wonder about the haters. Is it laziness that you on’t research before you speak? It’s not hard to do. Or is lack of intelligence? Hmm one wonders hell maybe it’s both

  158. Since the league realignment in 2002:

The three bottom teams in each AFC division played a total of 252 games against the other 3 divisions in that 14 year span. Their total wins are:
    East – 118
    North – 113
    West – 110
    South – 104

In addition, the number of times those lower three teams together, in each division, either won more games than lost against those same opponents, or tied wins and losses:
East – winning record 5 times, tied record 2 times
North – winning record 3 times, tied record 2 times
West – winning record 4 times, tied record 2 times
South – winning record 3 times, no tied record

I not sure how that equates to being the East being the weakest division. In fact, in 2008 when the Bills were the only team in the East with a losing record at 7-9, they went 0-6 within the East but 7-3 over all other opponents, including 5-1 against non-division AFC opponents.

  159. ‘Gratz to the Panthers making it to the WC round and losing.

There’s jumping the shark and then there’s going full on beach mode. If a Pats fan considers Miami at all it’s in much the same way a hammer considers a nail. If you want to antagonize New Englanders instead of amusing us you are going to have to up your game and learn a little about your target audience. To begin with Boston is a pro town. There are over 100 colleges in metro Boston, that’s just too many for the population to have a huge allegiance to any one school. Other than maybe hockey, and that’s mostly because of the Beanpot, not much attention gets paid to college sports here.
Another thing you really ought to try is bringing some facts to the table because you can be sure we will have them. Sports debating is practically an art form here, there’s no point in throwing out bs to a fan base that knows the truth. You can’t really expect there’s a b-ball fan here that doesn’t know the Hawks ended the Celts season or a B’s fan who doesn’t know the Panthers have never won a Cup and Reilly Smith can’t find his own end of the ice with a map. We may correct your most erroneous posts in order to educate others or share a laugh but there’s not much challenge in it for us. Please up your game or take it elsewhere and get back to us when you actually have one.

While it’s historically arguable to call it flat out dominance since ’96, one losing season in 20 years is as good as it gets. A NEW RULE. So how exactly were the Patriots cheating before, hater?

    ———————————————————-
I shall continue with what you left off…you know the part where they got caught cheating (again)

“It’s the second consecutive year that the NFL has changed a rule regarding jersey numbers in response to something the Patriots did ; last year the league changed the rules about eligible receivers wearing ineligible numbers after the Ravens complained about a trick play the Patriots used.”

…notice the “in response to something the Patriots did”

  172. The Raven would like the Patriots to wear pinnies during all practices and to announce the number of the player that will be receiving the ball on pass plays during the regular season.

  173. OK you can’t do simple math. So I’ll speak slowly. Since there was a rule change that means that it was within the rules. Or it was worded to vaguely. When something is changed it is either clarified or it is transformed to an opposite like the uniform rule. It was with in the rules and changed to make it against the rules. or it was to vague and needed clarification. So how is that cheating?

  174. not sure a lot of these commenters understand what breaking/bending a rule means. meaning a rule has to be set and implemented in the first place before someone can break it.

  175. 2002- 2015* The New England Patriot Cheating Years… Now that they have been caught they can’t win any game of any importance.

  176. Pretty sure a trick play is just last. Last year put an end to the particular trick play of eligible receivers reporting as ineligible and lining up outside the tackle box.

If you want to argue doing that next year would be breaking the rules you would be correct. If you are trying to argue it was illegal prior you simply don’t have a leg to stand on.

Yeah, the Patriots did something clever and the NFL made a new rule to ban the practice.

You’re missing the essential part of the argument, aren’t you?

  178. At some point somebody dreamed up the HB option play, the wildcat and other trick plays. Some hung around and some didn’t. If you can’t understand that you be hatin’. Just sayin’
