Eagles have proven they’re serious — about spending money

With last night’s mega-deal for defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, the Eagles have proven they’re serious about spending money for football players.

Now they just have to prove themselves good at playing football.

According to ESPN Stats and Information, the Eagles have now doled out over $280 million in guaranteed money this offseason, nearly double any other team including the drunken sailors of free agency, the Giants.

By doing so, they’ve doubled down on the core of a team that went 7-9 last year, after going 10-6 the previous two seasons under a coach they couldn’t wait to get away from.

So far this offseason, the Eagles have re-signed quarterback Sam Bradford, defensive end Vinny Curry, safety Malcolm Jenkins, tackle Lane Johnson and tight end Zach Ertz. They also went out and signed free agent guard Brandon Brooks, safety Rodney McLeod, quarterback Chase Daniel, linebacker Nigel Bradham and cornerbacks Ron Brooks and Leodis McKelvin.

Oh, by the way, they unloaded the wagon of future draft picks on the Browns to draft quarterback Carson Wentz with the No. 2 overall pick this year.

As noted by Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com, that gives the Eagles nine players signed through at least the 2020 season — Wentz, Jenkins, McLeod, center Jason Kelce, Brooks, Curry, Ertz, Johnson and Cox.

Obviously, the success or failure of de facto General Manager Howie Roseman’s bold plan will depend on the play of Bradford and Wentz, in the short term and the long term. But the jobs of those two will be made more difficult by the fact the Eagles still lack playmakers on offense, with wide receiver Jordan Matthews developing nicely, but oft-injured Ryan Mathews topping the depth chart at running back.

It’s a big gamble, on a team still has plenty of holes despite all the money they shoveled at their own roster.

  1. W/ exception of bradfords/sanchez’s/Daniels deals they gave (bradfords was dictated by the market at the time mostly … The others were huge overpays I think). The Eagles did an excellent job at locking up good players on good deals. As a cowboys fan always thought Malcolm Jenkins, lane Johnson, Kelce and cox were amongst the very best at their positions. Curry, mckelvin and ertz are good players as well.

Eagles did a good job (rest of the guys I’m not that familiar w: enough to compare them)

  3. As my stupid friend used to say, scared money don’t make money. Eagles fans should be optimistic though, in a garbage division with two aging QBs, they could be making the moves that give them a nice run of playoff appearances.

  4. It’s pretty funny when you see people’s response to this deal it’s pretty clear they have never watched cox play. You may want to put his tape on and understand why he got the contract that he got. Oh and also understand that for the past 3 years he has been playing in a scheme that he doesn’t fit best in (3-4) and now this year finally gets to play in a scheme should be even better in (4-3).

  5. If the Giants are the ‘drunken sailors’ of free agency spending half as much as the Eagles on quality free agents they need for the last ranked DEF…what are the Eagles…? The delusional psychopaths of free agency?

  6. Hey it worked for the Broncos. So why not the Eagles? Of course it won’t be a dynasty. As the Broncos showed last year, anybody with a terrible team can win a superbowl for a year provided the team pays money on one side of the ball or the other. So maybe that’s what the Eagles hope for, a 1-peat, just so that they can say they have a superbowl.

  7. I love it! They are going to be in cap h**l for years and little blue will be in the same boat.

watch it crash and burn as usual while my boys are building through the draft and not handing out ridiculous giant contracts.

    Bring on the haters!

  8. The Eagles. Please stop. Every year the media treats them like a bad boy contender. They have never done Jack. Wake me when they do something. They are merely a practice team for their division. All mouth, no fist.

  9. Eagles should ask Dan Snyder how this playbook works. It wasn’t until he finally turned control over to a real coach and GM that things are finally looking up, barring the fluke rookie year of RGKnee. Fantasy sports only works in baseball, and even then not close to 100% of the time.

  10. Too bad they’re going to spend all that money for 3rd or 4th place finish in the NFC East this year, then be in salary cap purgatory like the Saints for the next 5+ years.

  11. Of all the moves they have made none carry quite the same wth head scratching cache of the Chase Daniel signing and that’s saying a lot

  12. Other than the Bradford deal, I’m pretty happy with all that spending. It’s not like we’re bringing in players who don’t want to play. Curry and Cox are studs and still young.

  13. So the Eagles have something in common with the Federal Government under Obama, both love to spend money, then charge higher prices for everything to recover the increased overhead.

I remember when the Eagles were smart about using the salary cap. They must have forgotten that players are GREEDY and will do everything possible to steal as much money from the Eagles as possible.

That’s why I would lowball every NFL player and ask them how much they would make if they weren’t playing football. They’d sign my offer in a heartbeat.

  14. The Eagles are one of the best teams at working the cap. This is not a Daniel Snyder situation. They know what they are doing and will not be in salary cap purgatory. They never have been, and never will be. Say what you want about them never winning a Super Bowl, but they know how to work the cap.

  15. To be fair, you would also need to account for any of the guaranteed money they traded away as a reduction to get to a true value of additional guaranteed money going forward.

The two big trades were Maxwell and Murray who both had a ton of guaranteed money.

You are way off base here. Most of the money shelled out this offseason was to players the Eagles drafted. Thats a much different philosophy than just handing out huge contracts to free agents that were drafted by other teams, like Dan Snyder did for years. Did they spend a lot of money? Yes. But most of these contracts handed out were the smart moves to make. This team will most likely still hover around 500. but the nucleus (which is all locked in long term) is there to win. Just gotta pray the qb play is up to par because there is talent on this team.

perhaps you are not aware of free agency?

i do not agree with the spending the Eagles are undertaking, but if you want to be successful in today’s game you either need incredibly brilliant coaching, or quality players, or a combination of both.

The best part of the Cox signing is that the Broncos and Miller are now wider apart than ever, but Elway is a genius.

Until it translates to Super Bowls, then it’s just money wasted.
    ========================

So in other words, every dollar spent on re-signing core players on any team is wasted unless that team wins the Super Bowl.

    Brilliant!!

  19. The best part of the Cox signing is that the Broncos and Miller are now wider apart than ever, but Elway is a genius.
    ===========================
Smart teams (see Panthers and Norman) are starting to realize that unless it’s a QB or Great WR, you need a lot of Good to very Good players (especially Defense) vice 1 or 2 super stars taking a lot of cap space. Miller may get his money, but with scrubs behind and next to him the Defense will suffer.

  20. Bottom line is good teams know how to not pay players and win. In the days of CTE and health concerns, the worst thing you could possibly do is dump a ton of money in a players lap. Fat and happy is a recipe for losing. Starving and desperate players are the ones that perform in this day and age. There are exceptions, but for the most part this is the rule. FA and big re-signings usually put you in a bad place.

  21. And all this cash went to the “leader” of the team who went to the club 1 hr after practice broke. buyer beware.

Seriously? They’ve shelled out $280 mil in guarantees this year, nearly double of the next closest team. And you believe that’s on rookies?

    ———

You can’t compare the two situations. Snyder spent like crazy on free agents for years. That’s not what they are doing…they are mixing in FA with drafted players and young veterans. Other than spending a lot of money, they are not the same thing.

  25. They will have the best defense in the division this year. They won’t be on the field for 75% of the time. Their defense was good for the first 9 or 10 games and then were just worn out. That was with awful D coordinator. This division is putrid. Redskins can’t beat anyone with a winning record, Dallas, Romo is held together by duct tape at this point and the Giants just plain stink.

  26. Sigh… my Eagles just cannot win (no pun intended). You spend the money and it’s “you’re dumb for spending the money.” You let guys walk away and it’s “you’re being cheap!”

People keep pointing at the Bradford contract. That contract was very team friendly. If Bradford lights it up (hahahaha… yeah right) they can (and will trade him) and if he stinks, it gives them the flexibility to get out of it. What more do you want?

If that duct tape holds up with some help from Zeke boys win that division…by a couple of games

  28. U can agree or disagree that the money was well spent or not but everyone saying they will be in cap jail don’t know what they are talking about. The one thing the Eagles do right is manage the cap. I GUARANTEE YOU THEY WILL MOT BE IN “CAP JAIL”

The Eagles have won more games, more conference and division titles then anyone in the division over the last 20 years. In just the last three years alone they had ten wins twice and one division title. Only the Giants can say they have done more because they won two Superbowls over that time frame. Washington and Dallas have been a joke.

  30. All the experts here dissing the signing read a sentence or two and draw incorrect conclusions on how the deal affects the cap. In fact, from what I’ve read, the deal is relatively cap friendly. So why again were the Eagles wrong to lock up their best player long term?

That statement is spot on…whether u like it or not..it’s the truth

    Boys fan

  32. Even with zeke who we will see if he is any good (I haven’t heard anyone talk about a running back this much since Trent Richardson) you need a passing game without Romo the Cowboys are trash. You have supposedly this great offensive line and waste a top 5 pick on a running back.

  33. “The Eagles. Please stop. Every year the media treats them like a bad boy contender. They’ve never done jack.”
    _________

Well, they tried hard to do it a couple times. Back in ’80 my Raiders beat them down hard and left Jaworski a bitter little man. Then in ’04 McNabb folded like a Chinese knockoff suit, even though TO had a freaking heroically spectacular game with plates and screws in his freaking ankle.

So by now they should be coming to the realization that it ain’t for them. The glory, the glitz, the Lombardi trophy, the ring… It’s just not meant to be.
