Gronk working on “tricks” to get open, other than pushing off

Many (including various game officials) think Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski pushes off. On Tuesday, he was working on tactics for getting open that don’t include pushing off.

Via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, Gronk practiced fake at the goal-line aimed at shrugging a defender and putting himself in the clear for a touchdown.

“That’s a route, when you’re going to your left or right you want to give the whole head and shoulders, not just a little leg step,” Gronkowski told Reiss. “You want to give the whole-body feel, to get the defender to think you’re going that way and then pop the other way. You have to have a couple moves and tricks to get open.”

Apart from the whole-body fake, defenders will still believe that Gronkowski uses his arms when he can as one of his “couple moves and tricks” to get open.

  1. as opposed to gronk when he gets mauled and held over and over like vs denver where goodell clearly told the refs to favor denver in that game to make sure denver would host the title game as oppossed to seeing gomer need to go to foxborough and embarrass himself in less than pristine weather.

    lmao

    what a joke.

polian and goodell convene to make sure offenses are favored with the rules but not when it is the pats.

mauling, holding and tackling gronk past 5 yards is just fine and any phantom pi by gronk is readily welcomed for any pats opponent.

the 2013 game in carolina also rings a bell.

make it more and more obvious goodell

  2. “Many (including various game officials) think Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski pushes off.”

Are you kidding? The officials look the other way 98% of the time.

  3. The flip side, everyone believes defenders trap arms, grab jerseys, interfere, etc. He who gets caught, gets the flag.

  4. He’s definitely on the right team that will embrace any “tricks” to get the W.

  5. the Pats are the perfect place for him, if he was playing the game by the rules, there would be nothing special about him

  6. He really doesn’t push off that often, the offensive pass interference calls he gets are insane. Beckham wouldn’t be allowed to play if he were officiated like Gronk.

  7. The problem is when he fakes the defender and starts to break open, the defender reaches out and grabs Gronk to keep him from getting away. Then Gronk pushes the defenders arm off him and gets the flag when the initial penalty should be the grab by the defender.

  8. if the defenders werent using their own arms to lock his up before the ball is even in the air then he wouldn’t need to.

Gronk is a beast and the only way to hope to stop him is to interfere.

  9. When you have a player as dominant as Gronk, it evens out over the course of a year. For every push off that he gets a catch, there is a play where the defender grabs his arms and prevents him from being able to get his hands to the ball. That happens all the time, but people only want to talk about the push off. I am not about to research it, but I would bet you that Gronk has more offensive PI penalties against him, than there is defensive PI penalties against the player covering Gronk

  10. NFl ha sannounced a New Rule: amd .87. sec. 12

“No TE, who’s name ends in ski, shall use moves. shimmies, or shakes to gain an unfair advantage against lesser defenders.”

  11. The refs let defenders get away with murder interfering with Gronk so he has to push off.

  12. This just in:

Head, shoulder and leg fakes are now banned by the NFL because they trick the opponent. Defenses and Trolls don’t think it is fair that Gronk gets to fake them or trick them.

Even though this rule was just made today, we have video of Gronk faking defenders out in the past, so that was cheating. Every game Gronk played in is tainted…

  13. I love Gronk. I mean I have a life-size pillow of him to keep me warm up here on these cold nights in Bawston. But lets all be honest, he definitely pushes off and slams his body into defenders to get open. But I’m not going to complain, I love seeing his big, strong body up against other men.

  14. And the various game officials take their marching orders from various league officials…you know, the same guys who discount the scientific community’s input in favor of a Salem-style witch hunt. Gronk doesn’t push off any more than other elite receiving options, and I guarantee you he gets mugged far worse (for non-calls) thanks to the Shaq effect.

  15. Ragdoll defenders with the bodies of jack russel terriers will still go flying. Officials will still sporadically allow triple teams with defenders tugging on Gronk’s jersey like they’re riding a mechanical bull. Officiating incompetence and selective enforcement will still lead everyone to believe that the officials are nothing more than an extension of Goodell and are there to do his bidding.

And Dean Blandino will lie about it.

  16. I don’t think it’s pushing off any more than just trying to break free of the “holds” and “arm Pinning” that goes on by the DB’s trying to stop him….

  17. Gronk may as well push off…..he gets called for it, frequently, even when there is zero contact made.

It is gonna’ be a big year in the Patriot’s TE world!

  18. Defenders were so in tune to the fact the zebras were looking to call a PI on Gronk that they would initiate the contact and then bounce off him and get the call.

Why not – the NFL is not going to do anything.

  20. I don’t mind if his push-offs get called its when he is obviously held and it isn’t called that bothered me.

Or we could just get back to real football and call neither.

  21. Gronk is unfairly targeted for pushoffs and OPI, far and away more than any other WR or TE. As a big guy he never gets the benefit of doubt.

  22. If not for pushing off, this guy would never get open. Hope the refs start calling this…. better late than never.

  23. Receivers and TEs all through the league push off a lot, and in general engage in hand fighting, especially within 5 yards of the LOS.

Yet somehow all the whiners only think Gronk is doing it or that its only wrong if its Gronk or Pats receiver.

That’s called a double standard by the way, and invalidates any complaint you have.

You also love to ignore the people who mug Gronk beyond 5 yards and act like that’s some sort of entitled divine right even though there are often blatant penalties against Gronk that go uncalled.

There’s that ugly double standard rearing its head again.

  24. Employ your new “tricks” within 10 yards of the line so noodle arm brady can still get one of his ducks close.

  25. Gronk got open several times in the last AFCC game but Brady got happy feet and either didn’t see him or missed the throw.

  26. As much I love Polska Beast, and Hate Tom Brady giving the beast in awkward receiving position to hurt himself.

If Tom Brady want to have his beast with him ALL games, then stop throwing awful passes to the Polska Beast; When the beast has to jump high, he crash hard on way down.

  27. Gronk & now Bennet… Good luck stopping that!!!
Throw in Edelman , Hogan & Lewis & the Pats are pretty much gonna ABUSE every “D” they face….

  28. If I “were know to push off” I sure wouldn’t want to see an article written talking about it! Sometime people just bounce off the big dude, other times it’s because he shoved them. Let ’em play!

  29. Defenders have caught on that all they need to do is make body contact and hold on and wait for Gronk to raise his arm, like every other player does, to try and separate from the “body contact” which is a form of grabbing him. What happened last year was egregious, and another of the leagues tactics for breaking the stranglehold the Pats have had on the AFC East.

  30. I think 2 of the 7 times (?) he got flagged for this, he was guilty. The rest were guys jumping on him and falling off, looking for flags in critical moments. It worked. as planned, by Roger & Co.

Like what the Patriots did against the Colts in the 2004 playoffs except the Patriots holding was a lot more egregious. And of course Patriot fans called the Colts whiners.
