The Giants have been looking for tackle help all offseason, so when one fell into the market yesterday, they were naturally interested.
According to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, the Giants have already contacted former Ravens tackle Eugene Monroe, and think they have a “decent chance” of landing him.
The Ravens released the former big-ticket free agent, partially because they drafted Notre Dame’s Ronnie Stanley in the first round and partially (whether they’ll say it out loud or not) because of his advocacy for medical marijuana research.
The Giants had actually had some degree of conversation with the Ravens about trading for Monroe, but it didn’t go far because of the big contract he was carrying at the time (three years and $20 million left on the five-year, $37.5 million deal Baltimore gave him in 2014).
Now the Giants don’t have to give anything up and they can negotiate their own terms, though there will likely be competition. The Chargers and Seahawks have needs at the position as well and could bid for Monroe.
The Giants have made efforts to shore up the position all offseason. They brought Russell Okung in for a free agent visit before he went to Denver, and were reportedly interested in drafting Jack Conklin in the first round before the Titans traded in front of them.
Of course, if they wanted to take a tackle with a history of marijuana advocacy, they could have always just drafted Laremy Tunsil.
