Report: Richard Gordon had been evaluated for mental illness three times

When an NFL player is arrested for domestic violence and has an assault rifle in the back of his car, it’s easy to miss details which can cast the story in an entirely different light.

And in the case of former NFL journeyman tight end Richard Gordon, it also raises more questions about why he had an assault rifle in the back of his car to begin with.

According to the woman accusing Gordon of punching her, the former NFL tight end had been “Baker Acted” three times recently.

The Baker Act, as it’s commonly referred to, was originally known as the Florida Mental Health Act and provides authorities the power to admit those showing signs of mental illness for up to 72 hours.

Coupled with the portion of the report that includes her saying he hadn’t slept in several days, and snapped on her to the point of assault, the report paints a picture of a 29-year-old with some serious issues.

And that person had an AR-15 and two magazines in the back seat of his car, with the apparent intent of going to a strip club at which he had been involved in a previous altercation.

Regardless your political beliefs, that’s a chilling thought.

Gordon spent time with six teams in five years, most recently the Broncos, who cut him earlier this offseason. He was originally a sixth-round pick of the Raiders from the University of Miami.

  1. Good luck convincing the gun nuts that big bad Obama and Hillary aren’t trying to take away their precious guns (they aren’t). Meanwhile, Congress is sitting on the floor for a VOTE so that the wheels can get moving to ensure individuals like Gordon can’t get a hold of a frigging AR-15. Sad times, people.

  2. No, Richard Gordon should be in a mental hospital if not a prison.

They used to lock people like him up, but the drug companies got their way, as per usual, and had a lot of them released.

Their position being that they’ll be fine with medication.

Well what if they don’t take their medication?

  3. much better picture…….why is it everybody looks better in silver and black.

  4. So the state failed 3 times to protect us from this nut job. The same state that can’t enforce the gun laws it now has on the books and the solution is to create more gun laws… insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting different results. that’s exactly where we are with guns in this country.

  5. They used to lock people like him up, but the drug companies got their way, as per usual, and had a lot of them released.

Yeah, let’s discuss how the drug companies are to blame rather than why it is so easy for someone with a supposed mental illness can have the right to purchase a machine whose sole purpose is to kill other human beings.

  6. I’m glad he didn’t have a cup of coffee with the Cowboys during his tour around the NFL or this angle would certainly include Jerry Jones ineptitude as a GM and the organizations love of questionable character players.

    Whew! Crisis averted for now!

The leftists know they can never just round up all our guns and take them away. Their goal is to chip away at the 2nd Amendment little by little, law by law, until it becomes impossible to own one.

But it’s our constitutional right. You can’t have a civilian militia (per the constitution) with BB guns. Don’t like it then that’s just too bad.

stupid AR-15. those things are always getting a mind of their own and killing people.
    ——————————————–

As a fellow gun owner, please shut up.

The creator of the AR-15 never wanted it to be sold to civilians. Leave assault weapons for trained soldiers and be thankful we can still have handguns in the USA.

  9. I’m sure if there were a law banning him from having a gun, he never would of had one. Ha!Assault rifles should be banned. They are not for hunting, target practice or self defense. The best self defense weapon is a 12 gauge shotgun. But if you outlaw guns from law abiding citizens, the only people to have them will be unlawful people that want to do harm to unarmed law abiding people.

Just food for thought, if you put a pistol grip on a 12 gauge, it is now “an assault rifle”. So there is that.

  11. The US military and law enforcement makes you go through weeks of basic training before your deemed qualified to handle a weapon.

You must go through months of training and pass identification checks before you can obtain a drivers license.

But owning an AR-15, a rifle whose sole purpose is to unload multiple high caliber rounds in under a minute is something you should just be able to pick up at a trade show. Sure makes sense.

The NRA has gotten the knuckle dragging mouth breathers to believe owning firearms protects them from some government boogey man. Well the government has fighter planes, drones, tanks and helicopters and you have …. an AR-15. Dolts.

I just love the militia angle in this argument. How did the militia do in that standoff out west last winter? They got captured on a beer run.

Your mighty militia–even armed with AR-15s–is nothing compared to the U.S. military. But weaponry isn’t the issue, it’s amateurs against the greatest fighting force on the planet. But the truth is that those militia groups will just do something stupid and get caught by the local cops or the FBI before it ever comes to a gunfight.

You haven’t been paying attention. That is their stated goal.

  14. How is it that someone that was involuntarily committed on at least 3 occasions wasn’t required to surrender their firearms?

  15. What’s the point of restricting law abiding citizens getting gun? The bad guys buy them illegally. Chicago has the strictest gunlaws but the highest amount of scumbags. I find out some men rather wait 20 minutes for the cops to come and protect their families and themselves.

  16. Part of the reason that there can be no actual debate on the merits of limiting gun ownership in common sense ways is that instead of having an open dialogue where people can freely exchange ideas we instead insult and degrade anyone that we disagree with.

We aren’t getting anywhere calling each other doo doo heads, and people are dying at an alarming rate to irresponsible gun ownership. No one is suggesting that guns are loading themselves up and going out to kill innocent people. No one is suggesting that every gun in America needs to be hunted down and destroyed. But until we can speak civilly with one and other, we can’t make any progress on what to do.

  17. And here we go again. The fantasy world of if guns were outlawed somehow nobody would get their hands on them and shootings would stop. And the other side with their slippery slope argument that somehow if we close the loopholes that would prevent THIS person from getting a gun, or getting certain types of weapons/magazines, everybody would lose theirs. And then the INEXCUSIBLE failure of both sides to address the real issue in most of the cases. Mental health. Dems and Reps and the NRA should all be real proud of themselves. Make that deeply ashamed.

First of all, you’re more likely to kill a family member with a firearm you own than a criminal. Life’s not an 80’s action flick so get over it. Secondly we don’t have nationwide gun restrictions. So Chicago’s criminals obtain their weapons from nearby Indiana who have lax gun laws, as do California’s who go to Arizona.

Secondly, when has it become acceptable to hold ourselves to the standards of criminals? What kind of argument is that? Might as well not have any laws at all because if we make murder illegal only criminals will be able to kill. If we make theft, rape, kidnapping illegal then only criminals will be able to do those things. Great logic.

  19. Agree with steelerben but it’s worth pointing out that you cannot have a dialogue when people are not honest about, or even aware of what is really behind their opinions. It isn’t really about guns, nor is it about safety. It’s about tribalism. That’s the reason the gun issue divides down red/blue political lines, even though hunters, sportsmen and murderers come from all political stripes. As long as people view their tribe as righteous, and those not in their tribe as “others”, the underlying conflict will continue.

  20. The fact the Bluestree’s comment currently has more down votes than up proves everything that is wrong with the country today. And the type of people who actually go to the polls. But, please everyone. To make America great continue to form your opinions from such wonderful sources as Faux News, or WaPo.

  21. I love how people think banning assault weapons is somehow violating their 2nd amendment rights. When the second amendment was drafted guns were muzzle loaders that fired one bullet every 30 seconds, not 30 bullets every few seconds.

  22. If only everyone at the strip club could’ve had an AR-15 armed and ready, they would’ve been totally prepared to stop him.

  23. You can stop making guns right now, along with bullets and what already here will last 300 years. Semi automatic means nothing more then the weapon is gas operated. Most of the pistols made these days are gas operated this as fast as you can pull the trigger the weapon will fire.

Bad guys are always going to find weapons to buy, always. It’s true, we must find some middle ground and yes , as some label them assault weapons are used extensively for at target ranges.

  24. Pkrlvr,

I like how people like you cant get their simple minds around the fact that muzzle loaders were “military grade assault weapons” back in 1776 and practically everyone had them. Let’s also conveniently forget that no government funded army on this planet issues AR15 rifles to their soldiers but please, tell me more about how gunfree zones and more restrictions against law abiding citizens will keep us all safe. It’s worked so well in Chicago and Baltimore

  25. Heres why no one is gonna try take guns away from the nutty shoot em up crowd:

If it ever came down to bullets flying, EVERY private citizen no matter what kind of an arsenal they might have amassed is wildly out gunned.
Note to gun nuts: you might have an assault rifle, hell several assault rifles… The government has hundreds of attack helicopters. & even more drones.
    GAME OVER

I guess you have never heard of the Posse Comitatus Act. Figures, anyone who votes for their living instead of working for it goes by emotion not facts.

  27. Assault weapon is a made up term from 1989. It was invented to scare people into allowing the ban on menacing looking semi auto rifles. It is the most popular rifle in America, yet it is only used in 2% of gun crimes. The rifle is not the problem, 13 more people were shot and killed in chicago last weekend, banning the AR15 wont change that or 98% of crimes and murders involving guns. It is a scare tactic used to wittle away at our rights by playing off the fears and feelings of the ignorant

  28. And when the first amendment was passed, people had to call each other “Honored sir” or be called out for a duel. The Supreme Court tossed the argument that only muskets are protected last year when it unanimously shredded a MA state ruling outlawing stun guns on that grounds. Unanimously.

Nope. It actually dates back to WWII to the German Stg44 (Sturmgeweher) literally “assault rifle”. Again places like Chicago and L.A are unable to enforce their gun laws when weapons are shipped en masse from nearby gun havens of Indiana and Arizona respectively.

I for one would not like to live in a society where owning an AR-15 or any assault weapon is a necessity for safety. They have a place like that, it’s called Falluja.

  30. An “assault rifle” is a fully automatic rifle.

An AR-15, is not an assault rifle.

    It is a rifle.

If everyone has to give up their guns, then so do the police.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The PCA directly applies only to the army and air force, without mentioning the navy, the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard, or the National Guard. The National Guard is subject to Article I, section 8 of the Constitution, “To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions.” The National Guard is under state control until called into federal service, and is authorized to enforce the laws upon the request of a governor.

Then, of course, if the US Government did decide to use military force illegally no amount of laws would stop them. That is the argument for not making laws banning guns, right?

    —–

What is too bad is your lack of understanding of constitutional law. From someone who has studied it let me enlighten you. The Second Amendment does not grant you the right to have a civilian militia, as your statement seems to purport (“you can’t have a ….”). We don’t need one. At the time of the writing of the Constitution we had no standing military, and therefore it was necessary, but it still didn’t identify a right to have a militia. That might be the most unusual interpretation of that amendment I have ever seen.

When the military was reformed in the 1790s, after the Constitution was written, the need for a militia waned. Today it is utterly unnecessary because we have the strongest military in the world. Don’t think in case of invasion anyone is going to be asking armed bands of citizens to face off against the enemy.

So the 2nd amendment, which specifically states that the right to bear arms as part of a militia shall not be taken away – you’re reading it wrong. And it isn’t just “leftists” that understand that because I am not a leftist. I am however, educated.

  33. When the military was reformed in the 1790s, after the Constitution was written, the need for a militia waned.

    ________
And yet the 2ND amendment was passed in 1791, after George Washington, in his first state of the Union address specifically that regular civilians should have no restrictions on arms, and should even secure alternate means of production for arms than that used by the government, for the express reason of keeping the people armed if the government over steps its’ bounds

Look up Washington’s first State of the Union, it speaks to this issue with much clarity, and a few months later the 2nd Amendment was ratified with “the right of the people to keep and bare arms shall not be infringed.”

  34. So, I never read where he bought the AR15 legally conducting a full background check. That’s what criminals do, they don’t follow the law. So by idiot democrats stomping their feet for more laws, its simply another law that won’t be followed. An AR15 is classified as an “assault weapon” by congress in 1994 simply because it has pistol grip….a plastic pistol grip and a magazine. why aren’t current gun laws working and being enforced? if this moron tries to buy a gun for the rest of his life, he will never buy one legally.
