For now, Eagles plan to make Carson Wentz inactive on Sundays

AP

The Eagles have said they’re going to be patient with rookie quarterback Carson Wentz. They may be so patient that Wentz doesn’t even put on his uniform for a game this season.

With Sam Bradford slated to open the season as the starter and Chase Daniel penciled in at No. 2, Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice reports that there’s a very good chance Wentz won’t be active on game days.

Many teams only suit up two quarterbacks on game days now that the NFL has eliminated the “emergency quarterback” rule. So if Bradford and Daniel are both healthy, that could leave Wentz in street clothes.

Of course, that’s assuming things go according to plan and Bradford plays well and stays healthy. Given that Bradford has often not played well and not stayed healthy, there’s no guarantee things will go according to plan for the Eagles.

And teams have proclaimed in the past that they were going to give a rookie quarterback a “redshirt” year, only to change that plan. Two years ago, the Jaguars spent the entire offseason insisting that first-round rookie quarterback Blake Bortles would spend his rookie season on the bench. That grand plan lasted until Week Three.

If Bradford struggles or gets hurt, or if the Eagles are out of contention late in the season, it’s likely that Wentz would get some playing time. But as of now, the plan is to bury Wentz on the depth chart and let him learn from the bench.

  1. Browns fans giving other teams QB advice? Lebron wins one championship and now you guys are QB development experts? Lol. Good luck with RG3Games&OutForTheSeason.

  2. It really is a shame that Wentz is in this predicament. For an intelligent kid who aced the Wonderlic Test, and has a photographic memory, and mastered the playbook like no other, he could easily be the Offensive Rookie of the Year.

It will definately be exciting to see what he can do and what he can accomplish once he gets the go-ahead to start. Hopefully the Eagles will get him some weapons to work with, which Chip Kelly thought to get rid off, in his infinite wisdom.

  3. They gave up a lot for Wentz and they paid a lot for Bradford. If you throw the rookie out there before he’s ready you can turn him into the next RG3. If you put Bradford out there and he struggles you still have a plan B and a plan C.

  4. If they played him and he wasn’t good straight away people would just criticise the Eagles for rushing him out… doomed if they do, doomed if they don’t.

  5. I think it is a wise move, if they can pull it off. However, I can think of a few QB’s who were absolutely ruined by being benched for a few years. Brady, Young, and Rodgers come to mind.

    /sarcasm/

  6. The Eagles are a hot mess at the QB position … of course if Bradford gets hurt which is likely it all could change …

  7. Might be the smartest move yet…. Eagles sat Donovan McNabb to start the 1999 season and that worked out for him and Reid.

Of course it is a full month before training camp starts.

  8. Long term investment, they want him to sit and learn the playbook. I dont think thats dumb. I think its dumb they signed Bradford and Daniel to their respective contracts before they traded up to take yet another QB.

    ————————
Brady started his rookie season FOURTH on the depth chart, not benched. He had to fight his way to 2nd, and became the starter early in his second year, not “a few years”.

Steve Young was the starter his rookie season and made the USFL playoffs. After he signed with the Bucs, they played him…he wasn’t benched in Tampa Bay, either.

But hey, you got Rodgers correct, which is nice.

  10. I don’t see this as a long term strategic move to maximize Wentz by learning on the bench. With the trend towards getting Round 1 players on the field immediately, I see this as a “oh crap, this guy is nothing like what we thought he was” move.

  11. For starters (pun intended), it’s just a report from Kempski on the Philly news, he’s got as much info on the Eagles moves as my Labrador, and second so what if he does, Pederson played the position he knows what he’s doing….create some fire in the guy!

  12. I wonder if they could of gotten Wentz at 3 or 4 if he wasn’t ready to go, #2 QB draft picks usually start these days.

  13. I like the idea, but they shouldn’t have announced it. Let him feel like he has a chance at least at #2, and Daniel a chance to be #1.

  14. “Can’t imagine too many teams have traded up and drafted at 2 just to sit the guy.”

He’s n0t just sitting. He’s learning and having a chance to see the real speed of the NFL game from close up.

Tossing rookie QBs into the regular season from day one has in general been a recipe for failure.

I did not know that you could have four quterbacks on the field at the same time. Oohh those cheating Patriots. Brady was in fact benched and did not suit up for his entire rookie year. I know all these silly facts must be hard…

  16. It could just be a way to motivate Wentz. They have other places to go if he doesn’t win the starting job by week one. It’s not like the Lions at QB when they drafted Matthew Stafford.

  17. If you put a QB on the inactive list, it’s because he’s shown you he gives you the least chance to win.

The national media, like the trolls, are light years behind Eagles fans…as usual.

If Bradford gets hurt? Don’t you mean when? I do like the idea of him getting to watch what an NFL QB is supposed to do and what he should not do as well.

  20. For all the “they shouldn’t have announced it”… this is all based on the opinion of 1 beat reporter for the philly voice and his rookie projections, not a team statement.

  21. This is absolutely the plan, until the plan changes for injury or ineffective play. Bradford is gona play until he is hurt or plays poorly, and either one will give the job to Wentz becasue by then he is gonna be looking amazing enough in practice and the film room to earn the chance as the #2 pick. No doubt.

  22. Wentz is a borderline genius who ran a pro style offense at NDSU. He had free reign to change the play at the line. I’m guessing he’ll know the playbook better than Bradford by training camp and have it memorized by mid season.

  23. Gave up so much just for wentz to sit the bench… couldn’t have happened to a more deserving fan base… Eagles fans, you are the worst… cityofbrotherlyhatred

  24. Either the Eagles are trying to take some early pressure off of Wentz or the Eagles have already determined that Wentz will be a project (gulp).

  25. As a Browns fan I feel good about our chances for the #1 overall pick.. Either our own or now Philly’s Maybe even the #1 AND #2 Pick..

Brady did in fact play in Week 13 his rookie season, completing 1 for 3 attempts.

Can you believe it? The Patriots cheated by putting in a QB that wasn’t even suited up!

Tell me more about silly facts…

  28. A team who is rebuilding spends its first round draft pick on a quarterback. He proceeds to sit the bench for three seasons as the quality of play for his incumbent predecessor fluctuates from season to season. Eventually, he takes the helm as starter in his fourth year.

This is the origin story of Aaron Rodgers. Is it a guarantee that Wentz will mimic Rodgers’ success? Of course not, but calling the decision to sit him a tragic mistake is equally hasty.

  29. I could see betting the house to move up to 2 on a QB you think will be the franchise…. but to not even dress the guy on Sunday as a 3rd stringer? Even Brady, Rodgers, Young suited up at least!

  30. I do not necessarily agree with this decision. Every single position in football needs to play and needs to be on the field in order to improve… yet somehow the QB is the lone position where “mental reps” will give you the preparation he needs.

I am not saying throwing him in there week one is the solution but I don’t see how having him watch film for a season is supposed to transform him into the next Aaron Rodgers.

    I hope it works…

  31. The writers need something to talk about in this dead period before training camp opens. Regardless of what anyone says, just remember that we’re only one injury away from plans changing completely. Or one 3-5 start to the season away.

    Dear Philly,

Thanks for all the picks! How’s that working out for you?

    Sincerely,
    Cleveland

But now you must make the right decisions with those picks…browns are like my boys as they can maybe get the first round right but don’t have a clue in the latter rounds when most of your team is built ….example 09 draft, boys had like 13 picks, I’m not sure, but by 2012 not one was on the team…how do you miss on that many????

So now you’re no longer claiming he never suited up his entire rookie season?

BTW, why did he throw the football three times while taking some kneeldowns in the 4th quarter?

Oh, that’s right…he threw the ball while taking a knee because, ohhh, those cheating Patriots. Just another silly fact, I suppose…

  35. 3rd string is a misnomer…

With 3 QB’s on the team, 3rd string is LAST place on the QB roster.

3rd in the Olympics is OK, but not on a 3 man QB roster it isn’t.

    It’s LAST place.

So, the Eagles have announced that Wentz is in last place on their QB depth chart.

  36. Quick……

Name the last playoff appearance for the Browns
    Name the last playoff win
Name the last time they won a division title
Name the last time they had a winning season
Name their last Super Bowl appearance.

    You can keep the picks.
