Jim Irsay buys a Prince guitar for $137,500

Colts owner Jim Irsay isn’t saving all his money for Andrew Luck’s next contract.

Irsay spent $137,500 on the “Yellow Cloud” guitar that Prince used in the 1990s, the Associated Press reports. Irsay made the purchase at an auction in Beverly Hills on Saturday night.

Although $137,500 sounds like a lot of money to those of us who didn’t inherit a football team, it’s nowhere near the most money Irsay has ever spent on a musical instrument. In December he spent about $2 million on a Ringo Starr drum set that allowed him to complete a collection that also included guitars previously owned by Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison.

Irsay will be writing a much bigger check when Luck signs a contract extension, which is expected to come in the next month.

  1. So, can we assume that his hero worship of rock stars led him to drug use when he discovered he had no musical talent?

  2. I think that’s pretty cool but I bet at least 20 people will find something negative to say about it because Irsay had substance abuse issues
Or deep down maybe it will be because they’re jealous

  3. Sheesh, can you imagine bidding against this guy? $137.5K is chump change to him, where that’s “buy a house money” to some. Ok, a small and not fancy house. But you see what I mean.

  4. This is the same drug-addled owner that comes to the Capital Improvement Board annually with hand out for “improvements” to the newly-built suites at the Lucas Oil horse barn.

This is the same born-with-a-coke-spoon-in-his-mouth, lying, cheating owner whose daughter got married in Jackson Hole, WY yesterday, but he wouldn’t even pay for the hotel rooms for the guests.

He’s a joke. Just like the Colts.

  5. He paid a million for Jerry Garcia’s “Tiger” guitar. That’s right… Tiger is hanging on this rich a– hole’s wall.

  6. No doubt the Guy is a spoiled Brat, but we average Americans really need the richest 3% to spend! If you understand economics we have a huge problem in the US and this is caused by the straddle between rich and average (not even including the poor here). Wages has been stagnant for 15 years, but the profits are skyrocketing; so the rich get richer and they are not spending on an equal level to income. I am not a huge “trickle-down” theorist, but this cycle does work for the most part. In short, I hope his dopey Guitar helps pay for Groceries for at least 3-4 families.

  7. No need to FRET, Colts fans. Gentleman Jim is just building a BRIDGE to the future by PLUCKING this collector’s piece. There are no STRINGS attached when it comes to improving the TONE of the Indy locker room. Just because he dented a FENDER during an inebriated traffic accident a few years ago doesn’t mean the Colts D won’t SHRED opposing offenses next year.

  8. Kind of ironic that the largest NFL taxpayer funding of a new stadium was Indianapolis (over $600M). While billionaire, Jim Irsay spends money acquiring his trinkets, he couldn’t afford to finance the stadium, himself. Something is wrong with this process and it’s set to be repeated by Spanos and Mark Davis.

  9. Imagine if when Irsay was crying for dollars for his stadium that he had said he needed taxpayer money so he could spend more on a guitar than a lot of people can spend on a house ?

This is why no city should ever, under any circumstances, give the NFL a single penny ever again.

How’s Cutler looking this year? BWHAHAHAHA!!!
Poor IndyBear, anything to make himself feel better.
    Don’t like the tax? Move!

  11. Why would luck get a huge contract?

He is simply not that good. It’s like the lions when they dump loads of money on stafford. Both team will one of the highest paid QB’s neither will go anywhere.

  12. All he needs now is a bass guitar and he can start a one man band. Just another toy for a spoiled billionare thts never done anything to earn it.

  13. Maybe he got the ok from Roger to dress up like Prince and do the Super Bowl half time show.

This just highlights the vast canyon of difference between earned vs. inherited wealth.

In 1993, Paul Allen, who did not inherit his wealth, paid between $1.3 and $2 million for the Hendrix Woodstock strat.

So, are you saying that the “the vast canyon of difference between ‘earned’ vs. inherited wealth” is that those who did not inherit their wealth will pay 10 times more for a collectible guitar than those who did?
