Lawyer withdraws from Manziel case after texting mishap

On Friday, the Associated Press published a text message that one of Johnny Manziel’s lawyers had accidentally sent to the news organization. Today, that lawyer is no longer representing Manziel.

The lawyer, Bob Hinton, said in the text that he had a receipt indicating Manziel had spent more than $1,000 at a drug paraphernalia shop, and suggested that if Manziel is required to undergo drug testing, he won’t pass. Today, Manziel spokeswoman Denise Michaels wrote on Twitter that Manziel’s lead attorney, Jim Darnell, said Hinton has withdrawn as an associate counsel in the Manziel case.

Manziel is currently facing a host of legal issues, the most serious of which is a domestic violence allegation brought by his ex-girlfriend.

Michaels also said this morning that Darnell insists Manziel will not plead guilty.

ppl need to give Johnny a break he hasn’t commited any crimes. look at guys like greg hardy
    *************

I think you mean that he hasn’t been convicted of any.

  2. So WHAT if the man bought some bongs. They make wonderful conversation pieces in ones home, also make for great decorations. Doesn’t mean you are smoking weed.

  3. Attorneys do not make these kinds of basic mistakes. He probably did it on purpose b/c Manziel treated him like a stupid, privileged prick.

  4. The attorney really screwed up the text. It should have said “Manziel spent $10,000 at a drug paraphernalia shop”…

  5. @elmogotagun-

The common sense level of an attny who accidentally sends confidential attny/client communications to a news outlet is pretty low… so you’re a meany. Troll.

  6. Ohhhh duh, I get it now…. @elmogotagun IS the withdrawn Attorney… all makes sense now.
Sorry man I didn’t know- thought I was just trolling on the net behind your back, would never have said it to your face like that. I know you feel bad about that stupid text. You’ll get work again someday though! 😉

  7. Who remotely pays attention to the NFL thought Jonny Burn Out could pass a drug test? What’s going to be really sad to see what jonny’s basement is because he looks to be on cruise control on his current path.

  8. I wonder if the lawyer leaked that information on purpose to help Manziel. Getting the truth out there is the only way he’s ever going to make up his mind to get help.
Manziel is clearly a drug addict and he will end up dead if he doesn’t let professionals help him and take his addiction seriously.
All those who love partying with him should realize they are the enablers allowing him to destroy himself.
Unfortunately, the list of famous people who have destroyed themselves is a mile long.
If I had to bet, I’d bet that Manziel’s name will be added to that list.

  9. It doesn’t really matter who Manziel’s lawyer is because his family has the billions and attendant influence over the politicians & judges to skew the decision in whatever direction they want.

Maybe Manziel will go to jail because now that his father is indicating that’s what’s best. But I can almost guarantee that if Manziel does actually do prison time, the resources of his family will ensure that he’s pampered and protected during his stay….unlike others who did lesser crimes (e.g. Ryan Leaf)

  10. Of course he quit representing him and that allegedly accidental text wasn’t any accident but was a nice way to get back at his former client and to quit the case.

  11. Surprised the GF is still pursuing this… They’re young, you’d think the smart move would be for both of them to get on with their lives.

I seriously hope she’s not aiming to get her hands on what little money he’s made….

  12. Just like Tim Tebow, the anti Tim Tebow just will not go away.

The two things they have in common is their QB skills and the media attention they get/got.

At least Tim won a few games. (Including a playoff game)

I don’t think anyone except for the most gullible thinks this text was “accidentally” sent. His father is completely desperate at this point to help his son. You could tell the pain he felt during the interview in which he said his son was a druggie and belongs in jail. Whether the lawyer sent the info to the press to be vindictive or as a desperate attempt to help Johnny, there’s no way it was an accident.

  14. Affluence strikes again ! I think it’s kind of late in life for Manziel’s ole’ man to show concern and try to “teach” the punk now. Classic example of what happens when you spare the rod and spoil the child.

  15. He probably sent that text on purpose so he could just off the trainwreck that is Manziel.

  16. I have a hard time believing that an attorney would risk his law license or legal reputation over this foolishness. I’m also not convinced that JM is an alcoholic or a “druggie” in the clinical sense. He’s a young, rich kid who was given a lot of facetime , latitude and attention as a nationally known college QB. And again, as a mediocre NFL QB. And today, as a daily highlight for TMZ.

He’s an entitled kid who likes to party and doesn’t care about the consequences because he has never had to face any. That doesn’t make him an addict. That makes him stupid & irresponsible. It also makes him ill-equipped to be taken seriously in the league or anywhere else. Manziel is nothing more than an attention-seeking stoner with a fat wallet. Take the cameras, Twitter, Snapchat and press coverage away and he’ll pull himself together or end up sitting next to Danny Bonaduce on some VH1 pop culture show.

    This is hilarious!
People who don’t smoke weed sitting around talking about “decorative” bongs like art pieces. Who does that?

Couldn’t he be disbarred for doing something like that? Seems kind of risky to me.

His dad wants him in jail.

  20. Johnny always can be found in the company of outstanding individuals. His choice of friends, advisors and legal talking guys is why his career has all the momentum of a runway locomotive.

  21. In the real world, that little money he has not earned but received from football, is more than the majority makes in 20+years, so to say he isn’t worth going after if you are his ex battered girlfriend, is a bogus statement.

  22. His attorney didn’t withdraw, just another attorney in the firm agreed not to work on the matter.

Find it funny that Johnny has a spokesperson.

I feel for Johnny’s parents. They are obviously sick about Johnny’s condition and are not in denial. He may never speak to them again but it is apparent if their public words spur him to get meaningful help it will have been worth it.

As much as the parents may second guess their manner of raising their son, he is an adult and an individual responsible for himself. He has been given top notch counseling but until he wants to change his ways, forced counseling will not fix the situation.
