Packers president: 17-game season could facilitate more international play

AP

Although it was a much-discussed proposal a couple years ago, NFL executives have recently stayed relatively quiet about the possibility of lengthening the regular season. But Packers President Mark Murphy had something to say about the topic recently.

Asked about playing more games overseas, Murphy said one way to facilitate that could be expanding the regular season to 17 games, with each team playing eight games at home, eight on the road and one outside the United States.

“As you look ahead, if we’re going to have more and more international games, something’s got to give at some point,” Murphy said, via ESPN. “One thought that’s been discussed is to go to 17 [regular-season games] and three [preseason] and then everybody would have an international game. So nobody would have to give up a home game then.”

As we’ve noted when this proposal has come up before, NFL players have largely opposed the possibility of making the regular season longer, and the owners can’t expand the regular season without the approval of the NFL Players Association. With the NFL’s insistence that player safety is its top priority, it might be hard to justify exposing players to more hits and potentially more injuries.

However, if the NFL can convince the players that those international games are going to make a lot of money — an influx of money that will result in a higher salary cap and more money in the players’ pockets — it’s possible that the players could buy into Murphy’s proposal.

  1. Determined to ram football down the rest of the world’s throat. Nothing but greed.

Let’s make a deal: We quit trying to ram football down the rest of the world’s throat, and the rest of the world agrees to let the United States ignore soccer for good.

  2. That’s a thinly veiled attempt, sir.

Without further subjecting the player to even more abuse, how about the week following the bye, play a game in London. The next week, those teams play an east coast game. (The kicker is the Thursday game, which also should be used w/ the bye week. )

  3. Yeah, that’s what we want more international games. With the number of injuries we see in a 16 game season already diluting the quality of the product on the field no true fan wants to see a 17th game added not to mention what the added travel to could do to game prep. The Thursday night follies have already proven the pitfalls of shortened prep. As for the players it may take a lot more than just cash to get them to go along with a 17 game season. With trust in the league office being at an all time low there would have to be major concessions. Neutral arbitration and marijuana testing would definitely have to be on the table at the very least. Offering up Goodell as a blood sacrifice might be a good start

  4. EASY FIX

Have Representative Teams for each NFL Team located in their homeland for each international game.
These Foreign Teams will wear the exact uniforms of each of the 32 NFL Teams.
This way, the Real NFL Teams do not have to travel overseas for a frivolous game that is all about generating more money for the Greedy & Corrupt NFL Owners and their ‘Parity Agenda’.

What is worse then a NFL ‘Parity Agenda’ ???

    A GLOBAL Parity Agenda

  5. Wow. These owners are simply insatiable when it comes to making more money. I know it’s a business, but 16 weeks is already hard enough on the players.

  6. This sounds like someone sucking up to the commissioner who wants a longer season and international games.

  7. But the crucial thing is to get the Packer “owners” approval, because we all know how important and influential they think they are.

  8. The NFL tests it’s players for drugs. They need to start testing these executives who think that anybody except them wants NFL football in other countries. Because no one does except them. This is getting absurd.

  9. “With the NFL’s insistence that player safety is its top priority, it might be hard to justify exposing players to more hits and potentially more injuries”

Two things.. one is they would be eliminating a pre season game .. and two.. how is it any different than say making the playoffs.. do players complain to the union when they have to play an extra game at the end of the season because they earned it?

  10. While you are at it add a second Bye week to recuperate, that would be good, but then all the rest of the EU will be pissed if we play in Brittan, and Germany will be pissed then here we go WW3….
On second thought…. Lets keep it the way it is..

  11. Good. Then Packers can play their last game of the season in the bahamas in 100% humidity after living in the snow for a month. The players will sure love that.

  12. NFLPA can come back with:
-The salary cap must be inflated.
-Team rosters must be expanded to 60.
-There must be two bye weeks per team.
-Do away with the Thursday games.

  13. 17 game schedule WOULD facilitate more (and never ending) ownership greed.
Is it ever enough for these pigs??

  14. Stupid idea.
Football is a team sport and if you don’t have enough training time you end with on field errors and players making fundamental mistakes.
You get a worse product the first few games.

  15. So not only do the players have to play another game, they gotta do it thousands of miles away overseas? Dumb. Just dumb.

  16. Reduce it to two preseason games, then seventeen regular season games.

  17. The NFL should start doing a prison tour. Just imagine all the former players they can reunite with. They should also have a prison draft. Drafted number one out of Rikers is…

  18. Survey the player … bet they will tell you what you can do with that idea …

  19. How about this:

    -Subtract one preseason game

-Start the season the first full weekend of September

-Have the Super Bowl at the end of January

(Basically, the way I remember it growing up)

  20. ive been caring less & less each year about football..not the same game i started watching..if they ever dare to have a team overseas..well, that will free up my sundays in the autumn in no time

  21. Moe money sez, “If we can get more out of the same inventory, I’m all fer it.”

Never once suggested opening up the game day rosters.

  22. That’s a better idea than screwing fans out of a home game. Just give the two teams that played out of the country a bye week and eliminate the Thursday night game.

It’s gonna be hard to sell the rest of the world on the NFL if you keeps sending them teams like the Jets, Bills, and Jaguars.

    ————————

I’ve said before that they should just create a team out of all of the busts, drunks, domestic abusers, and junkies, and have them travel the globe.

  24. Simple solution, pay all the profits to the players. Announce that and you’ll have players in a row boat trying to be there first.

  25. It seems counter-intuitive that the Packers, the premiere “draft and develop” team, would want to shorten the pre-season. I think Mark may have been “given” this assignment by you-know-who.

  26. One more thing to consider, the people of that country have spoken. Wait to you see the walls they are going to start building over there. Even Trump will be jealous of the isolation they voted for!

And the fans too. By 16 games I’ve pretty much had enough of the regular season. But who cares what the fans think, let these idiots run the league into the ground.

  28. Everything is negotiable.

What’ll it take? Expand rosters to 55? 2nd bye week? More flexible IR rules?

  29. Nflpa will roger to stuff it. The only way they agree is if discipline appeals can go to a true objective arbitrator to even out the playing field.

  30. If we expect the world to buy our car exports, lap-tops, computer software, burgers, airplanes and whatever the hell else to support American jobs, why shouldn’t we export our amazing sports around the world too…..

Its just plain dumb that teams recruit 90 players to training camp, and then fire 27 of them before the season starts.

Just pay guys more $$$$’s, increase the rosters to 60, and play an extra game. Give the guys on 16 game contracts the ability to opt out of playing the one extra game, dump the entire preseason and replace them with intra-squad scrimmages.

Whats the problem ? lets go……..

  31. The trolls are out tonight! Anyone stop to think that 17th game is another weekend with football. You aren’t gong to every game anyway so do you care that much about one game out of the year at a neutral site? The whining on here is as bad as the Fox News website. Get lives people!

  32. People are so stupid. One less preseason game and one more regular season game means the same number of games played. They walk among us.

  33. A Russian scientist said that teleportation would be developed by 2035. You can wait 19 more years Rodge. Then you can play a game on Mars, too.

  34. Playing games internationally scares me from a security stand point.

Two NFL teams in a sports venue, hotel, or just busing it to the game offer to rich of a target for those who want a news-paper headline.

The rest of the world has 4 K OLD TV too. Let them watch in on a Samsung.

  35. wonder if brixett affects nfl in europe. Im a fan keeping games in house. Think about it game away means less money here. Starting to worrow about our country.

  36. This sounds like someone sucking up to the commissioner who wants a longer season and international games.

    ———————————————————————

    sucking up to the commissioner?

the commissioner is the point man for the owners

if he wants it, it means they want it

he isn’t the czar of football

    the owners pay his salary

    which is $100,000 per day

every day 365 days a year

366 days in a leap year

    he………….works………..for …………them

if goodell dies tomorrow nothing would change

why do so many fail to see something so obvious?

  37. Yeah hey Roger why don’t u have everyone build these billion dollar stadium so 1/17 of the games can be played where their true fans can’t get to. Smh .
You wanna make this league better?
How about you get rid of the 16 weeks with Thursday games and back it down to when bye weeks start and end. Thursday games used to be special- now they are too much. Thursday games should always pit two teams that just had a bye. No more three days rest for anyone.

  38. Yes, making the season longer will make it easier for players to handle the extra burden of international travel.

    God I hate these guys.

  39. “Two things.. one is they would be eliminating a pre season game .. and two.. how is it any different than say making the playoffs.. do players complain to the union when they have to play an extra game at the end of the season because they earned it?”

    (facepalm)

So…the proposal to expand the regular season is linked to a proposal to shorten the playoffs?

    Let’s explain this slowly.

The same number of playoff games would be played.

More regular season games would be played.

Thus the total number of games played would increase.

  40. Mark, since you clearly don’t care about the best player’s well being or don’t care about your fan’s dislike of this scheme, why don’t you crank it up to 20 games?

  41. I miss Bob Harlan.

Murphy is out for the almighty buck at all costs and the changes at Lambeau and the NFL in general are sickening.

Players who are able to stand at the end of the season are diminished during the playoffs if they are still lucky enough to make the playoffs and avoid the injured reserve list.

The money grabbing Murphy disgusted me when I found out he and some others executives charged money to feature and honor the solders during games. I was misled to believe it was because Murphy and his cohorts were patriots.

Yeah, I’m a fan and pay the piper every year just like the minion I am.

  42. Isn’t this the same guy that said he didn’t want his team to play in China less than 4 months ago? I guess record profits aren’t good enough for this not-for-profit team.

  43. Owners don’t really care about player safety as long as it’s the other team getting hurt.
Players will give up anything for more $$$$.
Kill the pre-season (2 games max).
Either put a team in London, or don’t but quit the fiasco, especially the idea of Mexico. I won’t even vacation there because of the cartels and lack of protection.
Play 16 and realize you’ve already earned enough to live like kings for ever owners.

  44. tim2200 says:

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You are forgetting that 48.5% of all the revenue generated from a 17th regular season game would go to the players.

This is why the majority of players would actually support the idea – especially if it replaced a low revenue preseason game.

The NFLPA is simply posturing to get even more $$$ applied to the salary cap.

  45. For the sake of safety, maybe the NFL should be played like the original Dancing with the Stars. No preseason, no practice, no OTA’s, no off-season workouts…….just show up and start playing on Day One every year.

Let’s see which team gets better as the season progresses. Give us something we can identify with. It’s sort of like Professional Sandlot Football.

  46. This is actually good idea.

Reduce the pre-season by one game and increase the regular season by one game. I know it’s an unpopular opinion but three, not two, is the proper number of pre-season games to determine a roster.

Alternate that extra pre-season home date by conference every other year.

Add the international game for everyone. You don’t have to use 16 different sites, you can offer four international markets four home games per year with eight different teams each. Suddenly, if you’re in London or Mexico City or China or Australia, the NFL becomes much more appealing.

Give teams the bye coming off of the international game.

  47. 20 games would be better. More contact during practices is a must, because right now, all practice is doing is learning plays, not increasing ability.

Frankly, I don’t care about players risk. They are PAID to take that risk. They know it going in…yet they take the risk anyway.

Increase the roster sizes, add a second bye week and increase the games to 20. Don’t count the international games as home games (that’s just screwing the home town fans). Let it count as an away game for BOTH TEAMS.

  48. I’m sick of all these young guns trying to change football. It’s AMERICA’s game, not China or Mexican! Wake up america. These weak players today don’t respect the game anymore. We need to get rid of Soccer and keep football american! Here Here! MAKE FOOTBALL GREAT AGAIN! Say no to International football. wake up sheeple! Barak HUSSEIN Oboma is trying to make football into ISIS.

  49. Is there any business out there that is as corrupt and as greedy as the NFL? Maybe we should hold a bake sale for the NFL owners because it is obvious that don’t make enough money already!

  50. This wisdom is coming from a guy whose O line was decimated by game 10 and they were looking for help. Hell, this team loses more players in the pre season then in the regular season: Barrington, Belaga, Nelson.

    Ya we want more games.

  51. I ussed to think, ok drop two pre season games and add them to the schedule but now I think that is a bad idea. They play the bums in pre season so the top players don’t get hurt. Now your exposing those top players to two more times they have to risk injury.
The game is too physical. Hell you can lose your whole O line in one or two games aka Green Bay packers last year. Then what?
Add more players to the staffs. Now were playing 10th round guys and watering down the quality of play to get through the longer season.

How are the rest of the World trying to impose Soccer on the U.S? Didn’t they set NSFL up in the 70s(then it went bust and eventually, was reborn as the now MLS)? They did apply successfully to host the World Cup in 94? They have also applied to host it again, since then. Oh, and of course they just finished hosting the Copa America. None of that is forced on in any way.Much like cities apply for the Superbowl. None are forced. I don’t agree with the amount of extra games that Murphy proposed. If it did come through, here’s what would happen. Person A, and Person B, Person A can afford to go to 12/14 or even all of the games… They MIGHT go, but in this country(meaning England) There are a lot more of the type of person B who will either only go to the team they follow.

  53. If Brady loses, look for the owners to dangle a reduction in the commissioner’s powers in a trade for a longer season and more international games.

  54. Omg teams might have to give up a home game to try to play internationally to try to make more money.

The last thing I’ll ever do is feel sorry for an NFL team giving up a home game.

  55. If the number of meaningful games per season increase, then I can see a couple things need to change to support it.

    1) Increase size of rosters (game-day active, regular roster, and practice squad).. so more players are available to play.. so injured players can be more easily sat without impacting quality of game.

    2) IR designated to return needs to be expanded. Both number of players allowed on it, and time-lengths players can be on it.

I can’t tell if this is a real post or a spoof post mocking the low brow rednecks shouting “Murica!” all the time.

  57. How about everyone complaining about this proposal under the veil of “player safety” agrees right now that they don’t watch the 17th game when this starts happening. Protest it. That will show them.

The rest of us reasonable people will be thrilled to see more meaningful football games and one less pre-season game.

  58. I’m okay with this proposal. I think it makes a lot of sense. I would like to see the NFL add a second bye week so very team is automatically off the week following he neutral site game.

By neutral, I don’t think everything needs to be international. Maybe stage a few games in big college stadiums.

  59. make the pakers play a game in germany. it will be like an extra home game playing in front of fans who overindulge in beer and sausage and dont speak English very well.

  60. There’s a fairly simple solution to adding more international games without adding more games.

Everyone knows that Preseason games are meaningless except for perhaps the 3rd preseason game when most of the starters play for half the game. So make it so each team has to play at least 1 pre-season game internationally. Then teams can give their players more rest time, there can be more pre-game hype in those international locations, you could have 4 weeks in a row of international games, multiple games in multiple locations at the same time and teams don’t lose home games that actually count and they can still rest their starters as much as they want.
