Marc Trestman says the Ravens are a run-first team

The Ravens are paying Joe Flacco more than $20 million a year for the next six years, but they don’t view Flacco as the focal point of their offense.

That’s the word from Ravens offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, who says Baltimore hopes to be a run-first team.

“We’re always looking at ourselves as a team that should be able to run the ball first,” Trestman said, via the Baltimore Sun. “That’s just the way we want to play it, and everything starts with the physicality of our run game, and the physicality of our runner. That’s how we coach offense here, and everything starts there.”

Last year the Ravens’ offense wasn’t particularly good at either running or passing. This year the most important question facing the Ravens’ offense would seem to be whether Flacco can stay healthy after suffering a torn ACL in 2015, but Trestman thinks the run game may be even more important.

  1. He said that with the Bears, too. Then he abandoned the run at the first sign of trouble every game. He’s a passing offense guy. He should own it.

  2. Steelers fans: They ARE a run first team, run for the showers every game after they lose.

Yep, they always run when they see James Harrison coming at them.

    Oh you mean PED Harrison?

  4. Thumbs up for: “With a QB like Flacco, of course they’re a run first team.”

    Or

Thumbs down for: “With running backs like Trent Richardson and (what’s that other guy’s name?) of course they’re a run first team!”

Steelers fans wouldn’t know what its like to watch the Ravens lose first-hand. Why? I think they are something like 3-8 vs Baltimore since the start of the 2011 season.

Harrison wasn’t good enough to make the Bengals roster three years ago. No one is concerned with him anymore.

Can’t believe I’m defending the Ravens… but… didn’t B-more sweep Pittsburgh last year? accounting for two of their four wins? Pittsburgh owes about half of their victories to biased officiating.

Don’t care if he has a third eye; if he’s playing – they’ll still run. 🙂

  9. Gee lets see… Allen, Forsett, West, Dixon, Taliaferro, or saying this loosely, Richardson, I’d say they have plenty of options. Every offense starts with running the ball, at least thats what all the coordinators say. I’d say they have more of an issue at offensive line and linebacker.

  10. With everything to play for and the Steeler’s season on the line in the next to the last game of the season Ryan Mallett led the Ravens to a 20-17 win.

That’s just how good Small Ben in Big Games is. Don’t believe me?

Small Ben: 24 of 34 for 198 yards ZERO TDs, TWO PICKS, ONE FUMBLE with a QBR 36.6 RTG 63.4

Ryan Mallett: 28 of 41 for 265 yards 1 TDs ZERO picks ZERO fumbles with a QBR 83.0 RTG 95.0

    That’s just sad.

They’re not getting much of a workout because of the Steelers then, 7-3 the last 5 seasons. Even when the Ravens are struggling they own Pittsburgh.

  12. Last year’s loss to the Ravens in Baltimore is one of the worst of Mike Tomlin’s career. It was pathetically bad.

  13. Everyone knows in the NFL you have to win at the line of scrimmage. The running game is what you do to win that game. So in that essence, saying that you have to be able to run the ball first means you are trying to win the game at the line of scrimmage. It’s called “hard nosed football y’all” and that’s how the greats do it.

  14. Look at all the comments about the Ravens recent record over the Steelers. Little-sister syndrome is running rampant today.

    Since their 2012 SB season:
    3rd place in division
    3rd place
    3rd place

  15. They’ve got some talent in that backfield. I’d like to see Miami throw them a 5th or 6th rd pick for Buck Allen.

I know they are really high on Dixon, I think he is going to be the starter before mid-season. Dude can ball.

  16. Well, after his time with the Vikings, at least Wallace will be adequately prepared for that type of offensive system.

  17. Yeah, I believe everything that coaches and coordinators are saying about how they intend to game plan for the year. This has to be one of the funniest things that sports media does. Its just like the draft, like every coach and GM is telling you exactly what they think about every player and just giving away a teams draft. Now you think that these guys are going to be giving away critical information about what they are going to be doing the entire next year. Look at what they invested in during the off season with tight ends, wide receivers and pass protection on the O-line. I wonder sometime who is more out of touch, the writers who want you to believe this garbage, or the fools who do.

I don’t dwell on Ravens – Steelers after the fact, but let’s look at it since you are obsessed with it.

Ravens hold 5-2 advantage since 2012. One win over Steelers in Playoffs. 1-1 in the playoffs during that period.

Steelers 1-2 during that period in the playoffs.

Crown, maturity will kick in for you soon. Once it does, you realize you are bragging on nothing!

  19. Also, since the 2012 SB:

    2013: Steelers 8-8, Ravens 8-8
2014: Steelers 11-5, Ravens 10-6 (negated by the fact that the Ravens waxed them in Pittsburgh in the playoffs)
2015: Steelers 10-6, Ravens 5-11 (Ravens sucked, but owned the Steelers, per usual)

2016 – who knows about overall regular season records. But, the fact remains that Pittsburgh won’t get the best of Baltimore. Bank on that.

  20. 2013: Ravens technically placed 3rd…notice the same record as black and yella. Tie breakers decided who was 2nd and who was 3rd…Very average season for both teams…wow, so much to brag on there Crown.

  21. Forsett back healthy after the broken arm, Buck Allen with a year under his belt, and Kenneth Dixon who several pundits pointed to as one of the steals of the draft are the Ravens backs, no questions there for all of you geniuses here in troll-land. Trent Richardson was signed as a camp body and now he isn’t even healthy so stop acting like he is the starting RB.

  22. Why are the comments always so negative…guys r more Catty than woman I swear!

  23. “The Ravens are paying Joe Flacco more than $20 million a year for the next six years, but they don’t view Flacco as the focal point of their offense.”

Well that was a leap MDS.

“Run first” doesn’t mean abandon the pass. As a group of much smarter football people said on this issue – paraphrased – the Ravens we about 35% run plays last year, they’ll want to get that nearer the NFL average which is 40%, that still means Flacco will be throwing 60% pass plays that will now likely have better success

  24. Run first doesn’t necessarily have to mean run most of the time. Run first just means you want to establish the run early in games, which will help the pass game later in the game. Many teams try to establish the run early, even if they end up passing more than running throughout the game.

  25. The Steelers are sure in the ravens fans heads still and beating the Steelers is like winning the SB. But cat got their tongues talking about the Bengals. Wouldn’t say much of anything when the team finished in 3rd place three straight years. Smart money is on the Ravens finishing 3rd again.

  26. ravens sure love thier cons…build a statue for ray the killer now they employ the biggest known thief alive in trent Richardson…statue pending on him….

  27. Whinebaugh owns Tomlin. As long as the Steelers play well enough to get in the playoffs despite losing twice to B’more, I don’t care. I expect P’burgh to lose to B’more these days or at least split. I’ll be shocked if the Steelers sweep B’more. I won’t be shocked if B’more somehow again sweeps the Steelers. Tomlin and the entire coaching staff somehow lose their minds when playing B’more. I don’t get it.
