Cowboys’ coaches reportedly furious Rolando McClain skipped OTAs

AP

Once again, there’s word out of Dallas that the Cowboys’ coaching staff is not seeing eye-to-eye with owner and G.M. Jerry Jones over troubled linebacker Rolando McClain.

This time, it comes from a column in the Dallas Morning News that describes the Cowboys’ coaches as “infuriated” by McClain’s absence.

The column incorrectly states that McClain’s absence was from minicamp, which is mandatory; it was actually from Organized Team Activities, which are voluntary. But this is not the first time we’ve seen a report that the Cowboys’ coaches didn’t appreciate McClain’s absence, but Jones was allowing it.

Last month, after Jones said the Cowboys were willing to cut McClain some slack for missing OTAs, another report says Garrett didn’t agree with that approach.

The NFL has announced that McClain is suspended for the first 10 games of the season, which makes it extra odd that Jones would tolerate him. If the coaches are furious at a player who’s only going to be available for, at most, six games, shouldn’t the owner and G.M. cut his losses and get rid of that player?

Jones apparently doesn’t think so. And Jones has final say over the Cowboys’ roster.

  1. OTAs are voluntary, can’t the Cowboys get in trouble for being upset about a players absence?

  2. Jerry Jones is like the ” Donald ” he thinks he knows everything about football. The 2 should get together and solve the country problems. Bill

  3. Tha Boys draft and sign low character guys. McClain, Hardy Gregory etc. And then they act surprised when the get suspended. SMH!

  4. Tha Boys draft and sign low character guys. McClain, Hardy Gregory etc. And then they act surprised when the get suspended. SMH!

I couldn’t agree more, Skiss. What do people expect? If you sign troubled guys, you get trouble. You don’t get responsibility, ethical, moral, hardworking people who will bust their tell to make you a winner. You get 8-8.

    Jerry Jones makes me sick.

  5. They will cut him, Cowboys are known to take their time in just about everything… No need to cut him yet just so his suspension is appealed and reduced for another team to take him. He won’t be on the roster and some kid that isn’t good enough will get his spot. Who knows… that kid might be damn good but doubtful. This teams goal isn’t to beat you with defense. This team is going to hold the ball 45 minutes and hope to get one or two defensive stops so they stay a TD or two up by the end of the game.

Thanks for waiting. Jerry Jones wasn’t the owner of the team for 2 Super Bowls

  7. He’s suspended just cut him. This won’t be his last rodeo, he obviously can’t help himself or this wouldn’t have happened.
Just go away, and get a job at McDonalds, something easy!!!

  8. McClain, Bryant, Hardy, busted up Tony Romo, Darren McBroken, Gregory, Brandon Carr, Lee.
The Cowboys are headed down the path the Raiders went after 2002 when they signed check cashers, paid stupid money to unproductive and oft injured players, letting malcontents and non team guys have it their own way while the rest of the team has to suck it up and a myopic owner reaching for one last shot at the brass ring as his years grow short.
The Cowboys are headed for the ditch and it is plain as day for everyone but Jones and fanboy to see.

  9. I’m sure Zeke Elliot will benefit from the professional atmosphere permeating the Cowboy organization.
He will learn how pro’s behave. He will see how everyone, no matter what their role on the team, is not above putting in the hard work. All Cowboys players are expected to put team first no matter what, because that is what the Cowboys are from top to bottom, right?
    What could go wrong?

  10. My favorite part of watching the girls is when the cameras pan to Jerry in the booth while his team is being humiliated on the field.

  11. We had to watch Al lose his marbles for 10 years and make terrible decisions that hurt our team. It’s sad to see history repeating itself with Jerruh. I’m afraid Cowboy fans are in for the same ride. At least he’s not Dan Snyder though.

  12. A level playing field is a tough thing to overcome, Cowgirls under the salary cap have gone from America’s team to America’s punchline. After 2o years of no longer being able to outspend everyone else it’s got to be getting hard for even Jerruh to maintain the self delusion of his brilliant football acumen.

  13. They’ll probably wait to see if his suspension is reduced before cutting him. Dude is only available for 6 games anyway if the suspension is upheld. I’m done with him anyway.

He got suspended 4 games last season for the same thing. Probably won’t get his suspension reduced.

  15. One of the best things about playing for Jerry is he offers a lot of vacation time.

In reality, Jimmy Johnson won those last three. He’s the one who put those teams together. Jerrah just couldn’t stand not getting any credit for it, so cut him loose. We see how well that’s worked out since.

  17. Yet another wasted season coming up for Dallas. They’ll go 5-11 and Jerry won’t care. Hell, he’s used to it. The players won’t care either. As long as they get their game checks and smoke their marijuana then it’s all good in da hood.

Just the same as Al Davis but at some point you lose your edge and need to learn to let go. Let the young guns run the show. Too bad it takes them so long to realize it.

  19. Wow…didn’t think that was an indignant comment! Certainly did not
need edited.i am not in error on the stats.
McClain needs to go now. Like the Steelers did with Santonio Holmes.
Sometimes it is best to move on and find out what you have as far as replacements. He skipped the offseason. Got popped again for
substance abuse and was out of shape and was a terrible role model
and teammate. Those are more than enough reasons to cut him
    ASAP.

  20. This is kind of like dating a hooker and not expecting her to cheat on you.

  21. Jerry will dump the bum McClain before the season. He’s not that dumb. McClain has had had a half a dozen chances and he’s pissed them all away. Good riddance. Maybe Manziel and he can start selling weed or blow together

  22. 5 Lombardi trophies smh….jerry Jones w/of Jimmy Johnson = pompous, arrogant fraud.

  23. McClain has always been a low character, low intelligence, lazy, space-filler.
He was garbage in Oakland and he’s garbage now. The only good thing Allen did during his tenure there was get rid of him, although it was at least a year too late.

are there really 9 dumbbells that voted thumbs down on this?

you idiots do realize that you gave a ‘thumbs down’ to a fact, right?

never letting facts influence an opinion = fat. drunk and stupid is now way to go through life, son

  25. The NFLPA needs to get rid of this farce they call voluntary work outs….if a player decides to work out on his own he is accused of sending a message that he’s not happy or he’s not a team player……this is what happens to starters, imagine if he was a roll player, he would probably be out of a job because he missed voluntary workouts…..in this case, cut him because he has too many off the fields issues not because he missed some voluntary practices in May…..

said the fan of what team? LOL

  27. Here is what I think. Jerry was trying to be nice to McClain by letting him spend time with his family. The problem is that makes the other players question why they are there at practice, because I’m sure some of them have kids and family in other states. So sooner or later you have nobody showing up for voluntary practice and it’s important to help get everyone on the same page to compete this year. Well Jerry’s niceness backfired because McClain apparently decided to smoke a little wacky backy. So, yes he is suspended for 10 games now but to look on the bright side we are saving money on his contract that we can use to pick up a fill in player with for the first 10 games and we are still paying the same. So when his suspension is over if he plays like the player he is then you have a fresh player tearing offenses up near the end of the season and going into the playoffs. We might as well keep him because cutting him will cost us 750K. If he is wanting to keep making money then he will shine when he comes back so he can line up a good contract for next year. It sucks but we might as well make the best out of the situation and keeping him would be making the best out of the situation even though it sucks to even be in this predicament.

  28. “How many Owners/GM outside the Jerry Jones have 5 Lombardi trophies? I’ll wait.”

The Dallas Cowboys have 5, Jones was only there for 3 of them, and the last one was 21 years ago.

  29. Once a dirtball, always a dirtball! He should not even be on an NFL roster! What happened to the arson charge on burning down his house for the insurance?

Only teams like the Steelers, Packers and Giants can make such bold statements without an eye-roll from other real NFL fans. Classy organizations that have legacy ownership…. not a wackadoo jabroni owner who’s only good executive decision was hiring Jimmy Johnson then firing him b/c he was too self important to share the accolades. Pathetic.

In particular a Giants guy. And I don’t have any playoff wins, I’m just a fan not a player or an owner. From the perspective of the other teams in the NFCE the ‘Boys are the expansion team

  33. NFL.com is selling Dallas Cowboys Superbowl highlights, but you have to have a VCR or VHS to watch them. Seriously, check it out. It’s been that long since they have been relevant.

  34. And Jerrah keeps running to the bank with the Allas Cowboys fans money LOL! Who is the sucker? LOL

Ummm, Jerrah did not act as the GM for any of his SB rings. That was back when he was actually a smart owner and had football people making football decisions. I guess you could argue the Switzer SB, but that was done almost exclusively with JJ’s players. Notice the difference the last 20 years?

  37. McClain is reverting back his past behavior and Jones knows this, but he can’t admit it because then his reputation as the smartest man in the room would be tarnished.

Fun fact, while both have played 11 playoff games in the last 20 years even Jax has more playoff wins (5-6) than Dallas (3-8). Think about that while your putting the boots to other teams, your arrogance is past it’s expiration date

  39. The Cowboys are willing to have garbage personalities in their team, then wonder why these garbage personalities cause problems. The Cowboys aren’t the only team who does it, but they seem to be the team that does it the most.

Many other teams have success and they dump trouble at the first sign. It is past time the teams and the NFL clean up the sport.

  40. The Cowboys must have the largest P.R. Department in the NFL.
Any minutiae is brought out to do damn near anything to keep their name in the press.
These clowns think NO P.R. is bad.
    Read the headlines, only

  41. Some of the Cowboy/ Jerry fanboys are becoming the new Raiders fans. They’re irrationally defending their decrepit Skeletor owner who’s had the game past by him, and living in the past.

  42. Some guys get the keys to the kingdom and crash the car. He blew his second chance

  43. lmao, the idiot saying “How many owners other than Jerry Jones has 5 Lombarbi’s”. Ummmm, rethink your statement bud. Jones has 3 wins of which were 2 decades ago pretty much.

  44. Essentially history repeating itself. In Al Davis’s declining years, his main function as (tell me if it sounds familiar) Owner / GM was to coddle troublesome players and provide an easy pathway around the jurisdiction of coaches on the field, allowing players free will to run around as they saw fit. This approach would of course preclude the head coach and his staff from applying any level of authority in the locker room, affecting not only the guilty players but anyone else on the team who would then view coaches as weak. This crack in the chain of command would inevitably manifest itself in the form of excessive turnovers and penalties, leading to under-performance on the field followed by multiple losing seasons. The Cowboys come off a 4-12 season and a 4th overall draft pick.

  45. I understand in theory no player is bigger than the team but he’s going to miss 62% of the season and they’re worried about voluntary workouts now?

I would think they’d be more concerned with replacing him.

  46. God bless Jerry Jones. May he live for 50 more years. Jerry Jones reminds me of those guys in England standing around waiting for the Queen to kick it and, all the while, she keeps getting younger and stronger while they get older and weaker. LOL Love me some Jerruh.

  47. Cowboy fan is awesome. Jerrah having 5 Super Bowls. 🙂

Jerrah having his fingerprints on the Cowboys has led to a 2-7 play-off record in 20 years. Let’s not kid ourselves that the Aikman, Smith, Irvin years had anything to do with Jerrah.

Most importantly, keep doing what you’re doing Jerrah.

  48. I see ignorance in the above comments. Jerry has only THREE Super Bowls, NOT FIVE. Where are you getting these additional two SB’s from?

In the 1970’s, the Cowboys went to five SB’s, winning two of them. They defeated the Dolphins in 1972 and the Broncos in 1978. They lost to the Colts in 1971 and to the Steelers in 1976 and 1979. The two victorious Super Bowls mentioned were when Clint Murchison Jr. was owner of the Cowboys. NOT Jerry Jones. You idiots.
