John Elway, Von Miller talked on the phone for 10-15 minutes

Broncos General Manager John Elway is trying to smooth things over with outside linebacker Von Miller, and doing so with a personal phone call.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Elway and Miller talked on the phone for 10-15 minutes over the weekend, in an attempt to move things in the right direction before the July 15 deadline for the two sides to come to an agreement on a long-term contract.

Schefter reports that Elway told Miller the Broncos love him and will reach out to his agents this week to try to get contract talks moving along.

What remains to be seen however, is whether Elway is willing to show Miller the kind of money he wants. Right now, the two sides don’t seem to be close, with talk that Miller could sit out the entire 2016 season and hope to sign a more lucrative deal elsewhere in 2017.

With 10 days to go before the deadline, there still seems to be a lot of work to do to get Miller signed to a long-term deal. If Miller won’t sign a long-term deal, the question then becomes whether he’ll sign the one-year, $14.129 million franchise tag, or whether he’ll refuse to play at all if he doesn’t get the deal he wants.

  1. Von Miller must have nerves of steel; listening to Elway’s teeth up close like that must be like standing in front of one of those giant tunnel boring machines.

  2. “I want $25m a year.”

“How about $7m? That seems fair.”

    “…”

    “*crunches on apple*”

“Hey listen, John, I gotta go.”

  3. File under “no one cares” or “doesn’t matter”. With Sanchez as QB, even with Miller back they aren’t winning another SB or even going far in the playoffs.

  4. He won’t sit out whole year just ten games to get credit for this whole year. That way next year he can be a FA with no franchise tag. Do you follow?

  5. Meanwhile, elway still has McManus to sign. You know the guy who played better than gostkowski last year and in the AFCCG? Ya that guy!
Sanchez is like dilfer… But the Broncos lost two verr good defensive players and talib still has a bullet in his butt.
    So… There’s that.

  6. Think he mentioned his experience cheating the salary cap? Then Miller could have countered with how he cheated the urine testing.
    What a pair.

  7. Elway is not gonna pay Miller a dime more the team has budgeted for him.
    Posturing aside.
Miller will not sit out the season, his only clout, is threatening to sit out.
Elway is not listening to threats, just the media is.
Slow times in the NFL till camp opens.
    Media has to report something.

  8. It’s all part of the process. This will be done on the 15th, and with over 50 Million guaranteed over 3 years.

Count it…we can revisit in 10 days.

  9. John Elway must be running low on methods to cheat the salary cap.

Maybe he should call Mike Shanahan.

  10. I talked on the phone for 20 minutes last night. It only cost me 50 bucks.

  11. The Broncos will come off their stance. The market for defensive linemen has exploded and Miller os one of the best in the game. The issue is guarantees in the contract and Miller is smart to hold out and ensure he receives comparable market level guarantees. Almost any other team and Miller would have been rewarded with a record breaking contract by now but this is Elway’s MO. However Miller is a huge enough of a talent playing at a premium position, and critical enough to the success of the Broncos that Elway will have to relent.

  12. John: “Well Von it’s all about the team, sometime you just sign for less for the better of the team”

Von; John I just have to say I look much better in a black hat than I do an orange hat. You are going to have to pay me more to wear an orange hat. Besides the color orange, I earned more money by the way I performed.

John: Well we believe in team players.

Von: I believe in getting paid

  13. Why the heck would Denver pay that kind of money? He’s disruptive, but a 12 sack guy. Where do they think they’re going with no QB? Khalil Mack I would pay.

  14. This reminds me, the guy who played Wilbur on the old Mr Ed show …. his given name was Angus Young. He went by the name Alan Young during his acting career, but he is the original Angus Young!

Heh…one of those Mack guys huh? He’s a hell of a player, but compare what they did in the post season…

    Oh, right…

  16. Khalil Mack will be considered one of the best players in FB after next year, if he isn’t already. VMiller was a great player at the end of last year, but it’s two teams going in opposite directions. IMO the AFCW is a tossup division. Not a Raiders fan. We’ll see who gets the chance to lose to the Patriots in their 6th consecutive AFCC gm, suspension or not. Probably the steelers, which would make me happy, due to their ridiculous fan base. Denver was the best team in the NFL last year, but they lost way too much. We shall see

  17. 10-15 minutes? I can barely get past small talk in 10-15 minutes. Do you really think there was anything of substance discussed? I don’t..

  18. Wow, they talked on the phone for 10-15 minutes?

Did they decide if they “like” each other, or if they “like, like” each other? Or will they make that decision after they go out for ice cream?

  19. That might not be a good thing. How did inviting kapernick to your house work out. Lets see( hear the deal kap You will take 7.4 million less than what you make now. Sign here. Kaps response. He’ll to the no as he walked out laughing) made elway look like a fool. Keep talking John. ( oswiler texts lmao)

  20. I imagine the conversation was along the lines of –

Miller: Give me 150 bazillion dollars or I won’t play !

    Elway: NO !

Miller: Give me 149.99 bazillion dollars or I won’t play !

    Elway: NO !

    Continued ad nauseum

  21. “weepingjebus says: Jul 5, 2016 5:16 PM Von Miller must have nerves of steel; listening to Elway’s teeth up close like that must be like standing in front of one of those giant tunnel boring machines.”

Like that one Cenobite from the Hellraiser movies with his choppers constantly clacking away.

  22. Elway is hands down the best GM in the NFL.
They won a Super Bowl last year with a less productive QB than they’ll have this year.
The AFC West will put up no competition, so home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Back to Back Super Bowl victories, back to back SPMVP’s for Von Miller.
    It really isn’t that complicated.

  23. “and talib still has a bullet in his butt.”

He saw the “Buns of Steel” video and figured out how to do it with less work.

  24. Here’s the bottom line.

Von is the most valuable player on your team. He deserves to be paid.

If I were Von, I’d take the franchise tag, sign a long term deal with Oakland or San Diego and terrorize Denver twice a year for the next 5-7 seasons.

  25. John: “Von….john here”….
    Von: “what ‘up”?
John: “Von, take the deal on the table or have fun playing for some schlock team….”
    Von: “you need me John”
John: ” I already have a deal in place to move you to the 49ers”
    Von: “what….hey wait….”
John: “suck it up and sign Von….or its over”…
    Von: “gulp…..”

  26. Elway: What do you wanna do, Sponge Bob?

Miller: I don’t know, Patrick, what do you wanna do?

Elway: I don’t know…What do you wanna do?

    (Rinse..repeat)

  27. I’m impressed that Miller could understand Elway with all the neighing and snarling of horsey teeth on the other side of the phone.

    🙂

  28. Q: What do John Elway, Von Miller, and a telephone have in common?
    A: They all have rings!

  29. Von was huge in helping Broncos win the SB. For those with long term memory, Von was rather pedestrian against the Ravens and Colts in previous year’s playoff losses. The Patriots are sitting back and hoping Elway adds the weight of a defensive player’s monster long term deal. Pats signed Revis to a large short term contract otherwise they build with depth and let the bigger than the team guys go. I am in the minority here in Denver; people here are acting as if he was the only player on the Denver D. Getting credit for only 35 tackles last year says different!

  30. I envision this conversation along the lines of the famous children’s book “Go Dog Go”:

“Do you like my contract demand?”

“No, I do not like it. Do you like my horse teeth?”

“No, I do not like your horse teeth.”

    “Goodbye then.”

    “Goodbye.”

  31. When Von Miller gave Elway his contract demands, sources reported that Elway whinneyed.

Von: sorry John, you can’t trade me because I haven’t signed anything:

John: oh well then sign it, and I will trade you.

Von: ok , but i will pick the team that I want to be traded to….As I said I look much better in black than i do orange.

John: No we don’t want that:

    Von: then pay me.

  33. Elway is hands down the best GM in the NFL.

    ——-

Absolutely not. Just no. Only thing he ever did was convince Peyton to go there to finish his career.

Stop insulting the real GMs of the league. Your gm let Brock leave and now you have mark sanchez. You were making but fumble jokes too…remember that? You wouldn’t make fun of mark now but you already did. Must be awkward.

  34. Hey von it’s Johnny boy. I am the greatest gm so sign the contract.
Von. How did that kapernick deal work out for you?
How did that oswiler deal work out for you?
How did that Trevor deal work out for you?
How did that Malik deal work out for you?
See a pattern here Johnny boy.
Now pay up sucker. 65 mill guaranteed.
