Broncos General Manager John Elway is trying to smooth things over with outside linebacker Von Miller, and doing so with a personal phone call.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Elway and Miller talked on the phone for 10-15 minutes over the weekend, in an attempt to move things in the right direction before the July 15 deadline for the two sides to come to an agreement on a long-term contract.
Schefter reports that Elway told Miller the Broncos love him and will reach out to his agents this week to try to get contract talks moving along.
What remains to be seen however, is whether Elway is willing to show Miller the kind of money he wants. Right now, the two sides don’t seem to be close, with talk that Miller could sit out the entire 2016 season and hope to sign a more lucrative deal elsewhere in 2017.
With 10 days to go before the deadline, there still seems to be a lot of work to do to get Miller signed to a long-term deal. If Miller won’t sign a long-term deal, the question then becomes whether he’ll sign the one-year, $14.129 million franchise tag, or whether he’ll refuse to play at all if he doesn’t get the deal he wants.
