Malcolm Smith says Raiders have increased their football IQ

The Raiders were active in free agency this offseason and the additions of players like linebacker Bruce Irvin, guard Kelechi Osemele and cornerback Sean Smith promise a higher level of talent across the roster than they had last season.

For linebacker Malcolm Smith, that talent is just part of the reason to have higher expectations about how this year will play out in Oakland. Smith sees a second year under coach Jack Del Rio, defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. and offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave is “definitely key” for the coming year because the team has taken its lumps and found ways to “put guys in the best position.”

“I feel like we’ve taken a big step, especially in the offseason, just learning, increasing our football knowledge,” Smith said on Sirius XM NFL Radio with Mike Keith and Bill Polian. “That was one thing we had in Seattle was a really high football IQ as a team. That’s something Jack’s preaching and, obviously, Ken Norton as well and then coach Musgrave. I think that’s going to take us to the playoffs. That’ll be the difference making our season this year.”

A high IQ is great, but it never hurts to have some physical might on your side as well. The Raiders have that in Khalil Mack, who Smith compared to Derrick Thomas while saying his presence is “just going to make things better” for everyone on the Raiders defense.

The additions to the unit can do the same for Mack and that balance bodes well for the defensive future in Oakland.

  1. Jags and Raiders are the most hyped teams this offseason. Let’s see them put 10+ years of sub 500 football behind them before anointing them the next great dynasties.

  2. The Raiders are a young team that’s been built through the draft. They have a young star at QB and tons of cap room.

That’s a big difference from most teams that don’t have a star QB and are up against the cap wall, like the Buffalo Bills.

  3. Bruce Irvin & Kelechi Osemele are loudmouths who are over-hyping the Raiders and providing bulletin board material to opponents. That sort of nonsense makes me sick.

On the hand, Malcolm Smith isn’t thumping his chest (and making a fool of himself) by shouting about how mighty the team has become but he’s instead expressing reasonable/tempered optimism about how the Raiders are making progress & learning. So Smith’s comments (along with similar statements made by Mack & Cooper) are fine with me.

  4. Only those of modest intellect with an exaggerated self-opinion feel the need to publicly talk-up “IQ”. And he’s wrong about Seattle – I’m saying Seattle was dumb!, but youth, speed, energy and exuberance/confidence was behind their increased success, not any uber-cerebrality.

  5. Oops, typo, sorry! Correction:
I’m NOT saying Seattle was dumb!, but youth, speed, energy and exuberance/confidence was behind their increased success, not any uber-cerebrality.

  6. You’re still the Raiders, lol something about putting the silver and black on that automatically dumbs down your football IQ and your required to lead the league in personal fouls anytime your team is in a scoring position.

    who’s your team? I’ll wait

  8. Increased IQ or not, I watch the Raiders twice a year, and every year they do stupid things, whether it is dumb penalties or dumb interceptions. I would be surprised if the Dumb things didn’t continue. These are the Raiders after all.

  9. Of season talk everyone is the greatest since sliced bread and then the season starts, everything reverts back to the mean. Not saying that the Raiders are not fast improving, they have a solid young core through the draft, but nothing to see here.

  10. MalcSmitty’s right…it’s why Sherman will always be better than Peterson. Peterson has the athletic ability (for a limited time), but Sherm has the brains.

Anton Yeltsin Skins are my team. 2 division titles in last 4 years

True, but prior to that, the last claim to fame was the Doug Williams Super Bowl win…not exactly a ringing endorsement…sounds to me like a team improved over 15 years…last time Raiders were relevant…15 years ago, so could be similar situation

  12. Sept. 11th can not get here soon enough ….action will always speak louder than words (especially the haters)

    Go Raiders!!!!

  13. The game progressed and passed Al Davis by for almost the last twenty years.

Today, the Raiders have finally caught up to the rest of the league in philosophy, player conditioning, practice facility management, etc. One last hurdle… a “state-of-the-art” stadium.

The one huge difference: Mark Davis hired and then stepped aside to allow Reggie McKensie and Jack Del Rio just do their job. They are relevant once again. And Mark should get equal credit for being wise enough to know his limits.

As a 35+ year Raider fan, the darkness is lifting. Finally.

  14. I see lots of Raider Haters posting comments here. This may mean something good is brewing in Oaktown.

JJB0811, how many Raiders’ fans do you see posting comments on Redskins’ blogs?
If the Raiders do fail, it’s not for a lack of proper building nor positive attitude. Do not compare this team to the 2011 Eagles!

SAYS THE FAN OF A TEAM THAT HAS NEVER DONE ANYTHING.

  16. I am glad the football IQ in the team is improving, it will soon catch up to the talent level and that will hopefully mean less called penalties due to a higher discipline level at the team. You know the ref love to call penalties on the Raiders.

If the Raiders are suddenly back, why does Vegas have them pegged for only third in the AFC West? Hmmmmmm.
    – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Good point…Vegas knows more than most…..with that said Denver and KC odds are at 9 wins and the Raiders are at 7 wins. Not sure why Vegas has the Raiders odds that they win the same amount of games this year as they did last year, because by all accounts they have improved as a team over last year. A bit odd for sure, but at the end of the day vegas thinks 9 games wins the AFC West, so that right there tells you it how close it is between those three teams. Forr the time being it’s the Bronco’s , and it is up to the Raiders and Chiefs to knock them off that champion chair.
