OBJ not happy to be No. 10 in top 100 poll

Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. recently complained about the pitfalls of popularity. However, he apparently wishes he were more popular among his peers.

Ranked 10th in the annual slow-time-filling top 100 list from the NFL, Beckham tweeted, “10? Hmmm. #BuckleUp.”

Via the New York Daily News, that’s a 22-spot improvement for Beckham between 2014 and 2015. However, he finished third among all receivers, behind Antonio Brown and Julio Jones.

And so once again a list with no meaning or value potentially provides very real motivation for someone who didn’t end up as high on the list as he believes he should have.

At least Beckham ended up a spot higher than his nemesis, Washington cornerback Josh Norman.

  1. Your peers voted you one of the top 10 players in the league. You reacted as if they threw shade.

Go relax and have a beer in the Cam Newton Pouting Corner (TM).

  2. When football players aren’t filling up the arrest sheets, they’re busy finding ways to feel disrespected by some insignificant straw vote.

  3. He isn’t better than Brown or Jones so 10 is actually pretty generous

  4. He’s in my top 10. He is definitely a freak. He and Eli together make for a good bet on any given Sunday in Las Vegas.

  5. The Giants were 6-10 last year, 6-10 the year before. So apparently he and Eli DON’T make for a good bet on any given Sunday in Vegas…

  6. If you look at the stats.

He is right where he is supposed to be.

The other two caught passes at a 70% rate versus a 60% rate for OBJ.

But by all means tweet about it….

  7. You can keep saying it has no meaning all you want, but the fact that players and fans keep reacting to its outcome proves that it does.

  8. Brown, Jones, Green, Gronk, Cam, Brady, Rogers, Rothlesburg, Bell, AP, Revis, Peterson, Sherman, Watt, Von Miller, Mack, off the top of my head.

They were 8-7-1 ATS last year. That’s money. Eli and Odell will work together better this year than last. Math and data isn’t your strong suit, I take it.

  10. Odd. I re-read the article a couple of times. He shouldn’t be on the list at all in my opinion, i.e., not Top 100. He is a clown, an absolute clown. I’d take a retired Calvin Johnson over this human sewage any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

  11. AB, Jones should be ahead of Beckham and there’s no sin in that. Personally I’d also put Green and Hopkins ahead of him as well. I am a Giants guy but there’s no getting past that 50¢ head.

  12. Only “roughly half” the players bothered to vote, despite actively being pushed for their vote by the league. And that “roughly half” is merely the league’s typically forked-tongue propaganda which they only admitted when pressed, and so really means “less than half” (because if the response was 51% you can be sure they’d proudly proclaim “well over half”). That, reassuringly in my view, tells you that most players sensibly see such lists as merely twit-fuel drivel for their self-obsessed colleagues.

  13. Take away the gloves and the fact that he plays in N.Y. and he is not in the top 30.

  14. At least he can take comfort in being the best gay player in the league.

  15. Doesn’t seem to me to be unhappy maybe he is just trying to motivate himself to climb higher. Lately all the titles of the articles are twisted like its the national enquirer or another super market tabloid and then others just read the title and comment something negative. It’s sad but I guess it’s true reading is fundamental but comprehension is optional

  16. He is not in my top 10…. or my top 100.
That is because I don’t keep a list or rating of players.

    And neither should anyone else.

  17. @spotsdad

Lost as usual, richard sherman, leveon bell top 10 ? Playing too much madden

  18. 8-7-1 against the spread, eh? I’m pretty sure that barely a 50-50 bet isn’t seen as “money”

If thats the case, Dallas should be about the best bet in the world

  19. Josh Norman #11 – Geez, I’d thin there should be an article about that.

  20. OK, all you guys saying, “not in my top 20” and “not in my top 25” … time to remove the Cowboys and Eagles jerseys. They are lowering your IQs.

  21. “And that “roughly half” is merely the league’s typically forked-tongue propaganda which they only admitted when pressed, and so really means “less than half””
    ________

You’re being far too generous. In Goodell language that could be as low as single digits. Anything over 20% would certainly have been presented as “most” and half would have been “all.”

Factor in the vig, and you’re a loser….in more ways than one.

  23. Yeah, sorry guy, can’t agree with you. You have got to get your head on straight. I was so happy for Antonio Brown. This list is a bit misleading though. It is supposed to be a projection of the coming year. Well, I can see a few breakout players coming that the players totally missed and I can’t believe these guys did it. Oh well, I think they really don’t understand what is being asked of them either.

  24. They all wear gloves, mitigates all those comments.
Hasn’t played with any credible number 2 WR in his career. Both Julio and Antonio have had good supporting casts, including great running games. OBJ hasn’t. He is right where he should be at 10 – and his tweet wasn’t even that big of a deal. He’s using this as motivation to become the best this year – SO WHAT?!

  25. All these Diva receivers should thank the person who came up with the super tackified gloves they are allowed to wear.

  26. The hate of Beckem on this post scares me. The guy has more receiving yards than any receiver in NFL history after two seasons. Even after missing the first 4 games of his career.

So please stop the hate. Green and Jones and top tier wideouts but the stats do not put them in front of Beckem The production and stats should mean something to you.

  27. So the players not on the list bitch and moan that it isn’t a legit list because they aren’t on it. Got it.

The players on the list bitch and moan that its a legit list, but they aren’t high enough on the list. Got it.

The people looking for reasons that they have been “disrespeck” is out of control. It is almost as bad as the people scouring the internet for things that they can be outraged about

    =========================

Cuz being slightly over .500 against the spread is way better than winning the Super Bowl

  29. Hasn’t played with any credible number 2 WR in his career. Both Julio and Antonio have had good supporting casts, including great running games.

    ————————-

This is just stupid. You think Jones and Brown don’t see just as much bracket/double coverage? Calvin Johnson did just fine his whole career with no WR2. Beckham is a great player, but he’s ranked too high on this list. He’s also a major tool and a headcase.

  30. Where did he exactly say that he wasn’t happy with being #10? What a troll of a headline. And if you don’t think he’s a top 10 player in this league….go watch his highlights AND his numbers. STATS DON”T LIE….keep hating

  31. Can’t speak for players at other positions ahead of him, but as far as those that play the same position, he was slotted very accurately. Honestly I do think I could come up with a list of 10 players better than him.

Factor in the juice and you pretty much broke even. Congratulations?

  33. Haters hate. Stats don’t lie. Those of you who dis him would love to have him on your team. OBJ brings an excitement every time he’s on the field. Not so with any other receiver out there, with all due respect to some other great ones.

  34. Maybe if OBJ hadn’t lost his cool in that Panthers game & helped Giants win that one, he would have been higher on the list.

  35. To me that sounds like he threw down a challenge to be better than #10; that doesn’t seem like a complaint about being ranked #10.
