Cleveland police union threatens not to work Browns games

Getty Images

The Browns don’t believe it’s good enough for running back Isaiah Crowell’s to simply apologize for posting on social media an image of an attack on a police officer. The union that represents Cleveland’s police officers agrees.

Stephen Loomis, the president of Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, calls Crowell’s gesture a “store-bought apology.” In comments to TMZ, Loomis also described Crowell’s post as being as “offensive as putting a picture of historical African-American men being hung from a tree in the 60s.”

Loomis has a specific suggestion for what Crowell needs to do next.

“He needs to go to Dallas, help the families who lost their loved ones last week, write them a check, look them in the eyes and give a heartfelt apology,” Loomis told TMZ. If Crowell doesn’t, there will be consequences.

“I will pull Cleveland officers, sheriffs, state troopers out of First Energy Stadium this season if he doesn’t make it right,” Loomis said. “You’re a grown-ass man, and you claim you were too emotional to know it was wrong? Think we’ll accept your apology? Kiss my ass.”

The Browns haven’t cut Crowell, presumably because they value his football skills. If he were lingering at the bottom of the roster, he’d already be gone. If the team is going to keep him, it would be wise for the Browns to encourage him to do what Loomis has requested.

  1. He’s right and Crowell could do a lot of good through this incident. It would be nice to see him come out and not just give a lame apology but bring some awareness to the issue. Why people think that is acceptable is disturbing and if they think it’s right that just shows they are exactly the kind of person they are complaining about.

  2. A candid and clear statement from Mr. Loomis. Good for him. We are so lost in what is politically correct that idiots feel they have permission to post as Crowell did and the past Miss Alabama calling the Dallas shooter a “martyr.” Meanwhile those who are being slandered and disprespected aren’t supposed to speak up for fear of upsetting people?
Glad to here a man speak up.

  3. Crowell needs to be put onto a Terrorist Watch List, he has shown that he supports a terrorist element and terroristic tactics.

He needs to be on a no-fly list and on a terrorist watch list.

  4. I’m no Browns fan for obvious reasons… but I damn sure am a fan of Loomis !

    #Loomis

  5. Good. Tired of the media manipulating stupid people.

An honest statement would be: “Shilling was fired because they made clear you can’t talk about controversial events/politics… if you don’t agree with liberal agendas anyway.”

  6. A Detroit white detective got demoted for calling the BML racists and this idiot get nothing?

  7. “You’re a grown-ass man, and you claim you were too emotional to know it was wrong? Think we’ll accept your apology? Kiss my ass.”

OUTSTANDING. My thoughts exactly. Actually, mine are more “colorful”.

He needs to be cut immediately and black listed from the NFL.

  8. Stupid. Refusing to work a cushy detail because of 1 idiot’s momentary mistake. Biting off nose to spite face for sure. what do ya reasonably want the moron to do besides apologize?

  9. People just need to be nice. If people were nice nothing like this would happen. End of story.

Be nice. Nothing ever good comes from not being nice.

    That’s racist.

  11. Umm punishing everyone for one mans idiocy is stupid. The statement to remove all players from a game until he apologizes rights a check and goes to Dallas is a man looking to make a statement.

1 man made a statement not 100,000 fans.

I don’t condone the suggestion tho I recognize the severity of the issue

  12. Give me a break. He doesn’t owe anyone anything. Yes, it’s tragic what happened in dallas. But equally disturbing events took place in Minnesota and Louisiana. Crowell is just as entitled to his opinion as this cop union head is to his. The cop is just taking advantage of a PC moment, whereas the timing of Crowell’s opinion happened to be pretty poor. How about if the cops want respect, stop resorting to killing people when there are much more reasonable ways of deescalating those particular situations. It cuts both ways.

  13. What a terrible analogy. That image is nothing like an image of a black man being lynched. Cops didn’t suffer 100’s of years of slavery and suppression. I agree with the sentiment of Loomis’ statement but he didn’t need to bring up that disrespectful analogy, it actually hurt his statement.

It’s right up there in the article you didn’t read.

  15. It helps if Crowell gives them cash, but that should be easy for him. He needs to find a meaningful way to help make things better. On the same hand, the rest of us shouldn’t ignore why he posted something like that, why so many people are angry, why William Johnson (head of National Association of Police Organizations) said what he said about Obama and the current Administration, etc. Most of us aren’t to blame for the mess, but maybe we can still make a difference. Voting is one way, by voting in people who really want to make things better even if it costs them their job.

  16. The times when you don’t know what to do are in no way made more difficult by doing the right thing . The right thing is more often than not exactly what your mother would tell you , and in this case what the President of the Cleveland Police Patrolman Association , Stephen Loomis , has spelled out .
It was very satisfying reading something a person had to say being straightforward and to the point .

  17. h0metownzero says:

Explain what part Loomis had in that.

  18. what Crowell posted is extremely disturbing and disrespectful. he’s a man who I believe has had a few run ins with the law in his young life. there is no doubt that tensions and emotions are running high among the black community in this country right now. posting that image was stupid. just plain stupid.

    HAVING SAID THAT

what the the hell happened to professionalism? “kiss my ass” from the LEADER of the police union? how about trying to reach out to him. maybe invite him to meet officers? introduce him to police officers who’ve been disabled in the line of duty? or setting up meetings with family members who’ve lost someone in the line of duty? Instead of trying to heal and mend an obviously broken trust between police and the black community, this guy responds with “kiss my ass”. Congrat.

  19. Crowell should make a deal with officer Loomis. Loomis goes to Baton Rouge and Minnesota with his check book in hand, offers money and an apology to the families of the black men that were gunned down by white police officers, and Crowell goes to Dallas and helps out the families of the white officers that were gunned down by the black army veteran. That would be a beautiful thing , and a step in the right direction.

  20. It was an idiotic and cruel post by Crowell.

And police can do what they wish – but it isn’t like they weren’t being paid for these games. I’m sure there are plenty of law enforcement officers (from agencies that pay less) that would be glad to take the extra work.
And in truth – I don’t expect deep rational thought from a back-up running back in the NFL – I do expect better from a law enforcement officer. They can do better in voicing their displeasure over something than a subtle threat that they will choose to not protect you if you say something they don’t agree with. As public servants, they don’t have that choice.

  21. More double standards ^ It’s ok for non-police to be bigots, but officers are “professionals.”

How about this, they’re all human. Law enforcement is at wits end with this garbage.

Also comparing apples to oranges as usual. Don’t compare what the Union said to what this scum said. Hate, death, murder vs anger. Two COMPLETELY different things that have no right being compared.

For starters, defending the guys who shot the kid. There are countless examples of Loomis saying nasty things about Rice and that whole situation.

Loomis shouldn’t throw stones at glass houses, especially when he lives in a glass house himself.

    ———————————————————————

The crimes aren’t equal, yet. Once the officers in BOTH cases are charged and convicted, then yes. The Dallas shooter was straight up mass murder – despite no aggression show to him. What the officers APPEAR to have done is made poor judgement calls while in the heat of the moment where many officers like them made the wrong choice and lost their lives. I can’t wait until one or both officers are acquitted, the black community is going to lose their minds, despite them being acquitted by a jury of regular people, including black people! Difference is, the jury looks at facts and rules/laws. Everyone just gets pissed if it doesn’t go their way regardless of those pesky “facts.”

    Hold on America.

  25. So these cops can’t do their job if everyone doesn’t like them or share the same opinion of them even though they’re public servants who took an oath to protect and serve?

  26. Loomis sounds pretty thin skinned for someone in his position. Yes, Crowell is an idiot for posting the image and should take actions to rectify the situation rather than his apology. Loomis however, sounds like he is equally full of anger which equals poor decision making. I wonder what would happen to Crowell if he were in Loomis’ custody, just sayin…

  27. I completely understand why the police would be do upset about the picture, butwho does it really hurt if they are not at the games to provide security and to ensure some level of safety?

    It’s not Crowell.

  28. While I don’t like the implication that Crowell should be forced to go to Dallas to do volunteer work that isn’t in his heart to do… I also don’t like the idea that this Crowell idiot is making more money than the cops protecting him either…

Blood is in the water when they apologize… don’t let up…

But Loomis should have some self awareness when he says stuff like that.

  30. funny, but the jokes on the police here. if they choose to hold out this season, haslam will just give em the franchise tag.

tbh i think nfl games would be better without police, security, referees, etc. let the players and the fans police themselfs like in the good old days. like the saying goes, if u give a man a fish he becomes dependant on it. but take the fish away and he’ll learn to start practicing canabalism.

  33. Too bad police officers and sheriff deputies enjoy those fat overtime checks and all the other goodies that come with doing “side gigs.”

Officers from other parts of Ohio would gladly take that easy weekend work

  34. The Browns should have cut Crowell yesterday.

Having said that, after an unprofessional and inflammatory statement like Loomis made today Cleveland and the state of Ohio should fire him today. Loomis is only escalating the situation.

After Loomis’s same Cleveland police shot 12 year old Tamir Rice to death Loomis said “The boy looked menacing”. And then when the city of Cleveland settled with the family for $6 million Loomis suggested that the family give some of the money to educating youths on the dangers of guns.

Cleveland and the state of Ohio needs to pull the plug on Loomis today. He obviously can’t do his job with the professionalism and tact needed for someone in his position.

  35. 8to80texansblog says:

    ======================================

Loomis said officers can’t always distinguish the difference between a toy gun and a real one when an officer has a split second to make a life or death decision. He’s correct and privately you know he’s correct as well. He has never said he’s glad the boy was killed.

    Try again.

  36. I think Crowell should be cut from the team and suspended from the NFL. And in a lot of places, what Loomis, Chief of Police is suggesting, can be considered extortion. Plain illegal.

  37. I guess it’s too much to expect the head of the Police union to be the bigger man and take the high road. His response is just as juvenile as Crowell’s initial action. So now we can expect that whenever someone disagrees with the Police, they can refuse to do their jobs? So much for professionalism.

  38. Cut them a check…really. I’m all for helping and apologizing but why does he need to give them his money? It’s America, a check always clears things up right.

  39. Oh, and freedom of speech goes both ways

The right you have to speak up gives someone else the right to disagree with you

You can’t tell someone their opinion is wrong and shut them down and expect for your opinion to be heard

Even a guilty person has rights to be protected under the law at trial. Do we want people to not have representation because the lawyer doesn’t like what the person did? No, you can still represent someone who has done a heinous act because you still believe everyone has the right, under the Constitution, to a fair trial.

Do we really want police officers to stop protecting people because they don’t believe the same thing? No, you are protecting their RIGHT to believe something different.

Our country has failed us. We have forgotten everything taught in school. We have forgotten this country was founded on the premise to disagree. To have healthy debate.

  40. Any compassionate person who has seen that photo just has to …..I dunno…just feel remorse. This is what ISIS does daily and they have landed our shores. For him to post that was again, I dunno. Words fail me here.

  46. Loomis is awesome! That punk Crowell should be cut immediately – and get no second chances. What he did is despicable, cowardly and likely to spur more violence against police. Shameful.

  47. We all agree Crowell is a Moron… funny thing is that Loomis is a piece of crap as well.

    1. while very offensive.. its not the same thing as blacks being hung during the time of slavery.

    2. what does righting a check have to do with an apology? or does he feel that buying contrition is the way to go? Crowell does not owe anyone a dime.

    3. Most of these nfl players did not get to the nfl on their academic achievements. Majority are plain dumb.. but Loomis is using a dumb players mistake as a political jumping board to raise public sympathy for cops at the expense of an idiot nfl player. This makes him a opportunistic social leech

  48. How about doing your job? You are there to “protect and serve”. It’s your job. You chose this line of work. Do your job. And try not to shoot any innocent people today, ok?

  49. What Crowell did was unbelievably stupid, I think the Browns should cut him and I understand the anger but this approach…it penalizes fans including those that support the police.

  54. Every day Crowell remains on the Browns roster is an escalating PR disaster.

Get it through your heads, Browns management. Crowell can’t recover from this. You ARE going to end up cutting him. How quickly you bite the bullet will determine how much damage control the team needs to do with the police and the Cleveland community as a whole.

  55. Wow. Looks like Stephen Loomis had been licking his chops for an opportunity to wield some public power:

Know your place! Do exactly what I tell you black man! Or there will be consequences.

Interesting. That particular narrative sounds familiar….

Bluelives aren’t the only thing that matters what about Doctor’s, Firefighters etc….but only blue lives matter right?Loomis is a piece of trash anyway. I hope Crowell plays for a REAL team because the BROWNS SUCK ANYWAY.

  57. This isn’t about Cleveland or Dallas or any of the hundreds of other places where race is a factor. It’s about the beliefs that are locked in. From the top down Race is playing a huge role in the decline of this country. I operate on a by person to person interaction with people, I help when I can and run when I have too. But as long as the fear and hate continue to filter so deep, well goodnight America it was nice knowing you.

Loomis, is certainly older than Crowell. Crowell does not have a badge. Loomis scares me more than Crowell to be honest. SUCH HATE AND DISDAIN FOR A CITIZEN. SUCH AN ENTITLEMENT POSITION. The assface who INTENTIONALLY killed the civil servants in Dallas (that had nothing to do with those shootings) had a plan. That is murder.

Big difference. There are so many idiots in this country that don’t recognize the difference and that is what is truly wrong with this country.

Loomis has had enough of the disrespect and lashed out. I completely agree with him. Let some security guards handle the Browns games if they are allowing an ignorant SOB like crowell to remain on the team.

    Peace out….

  71. This is the problem with police. Crowell made an honest apology, and instead of accepting it like a gentleman, this goon escalates the situation in the most hostile way possible.

This is why America is losing faith in our police. They will always overreact to protect their own, with no regard for the people they were hired to PROTECT AND SERVE.

  72. Okay, I checked where the story came from. Yep, TMZ.
I found it hard to believe a police union spokesman would make these comments – especially with the ‘write a check’ condition.

  78. Conservatives voicing knee-jerk support for people like Loomis continue to amaze me. We should be supporting individual rights, including all the rights associated with being free from police overreaching.

Here we have a man threatening to refuse to perform his duty over a social media message. Regardless of how offensive the message is, Loomis should be using his influence to calm matters instead of fanning the flames.

  79. So basically if this one player doesn’t apologize I will refuse to serve and protect the thousands of fans whose tax money pay my salary who had nothing to do with it.

This guy is just as classy as Crowell. That should go over well with Clevelands residents. When your department is known nationally for killing a kid holding a B.B. gun and the city had to pay out millions for that boo boo the last thing they should be doing is making demands of citizens. Police Union definitely dropped the ball by having this guy as their representative.

“Ah, so now the police can opt out of protecting people if they disagree with what they have to say? America is truly dead.”

They’re even opting out of protecting people that didn’t say anything. The fans in attendance at Browns games didn’t post the pic.

  81. Ironically, the whole start to this issue had been police selectively choosing whom they protect and serve.

You don’t get to choose. You don’t protect only the ones that like you. Your job as a public servant is to serve the public. This is the kind of actions that make so many people afraid of the police.

Fear is not something the public is supposed to feel about their own protectors.

  82. I have to admit to a certain measure of self disgust. When I read Loomis’ words part of me was thinking ‘damn straight.’ Then I realized this was said by a public figure in a very public way and no good can come of it. While Loomis may be justified in his feelings that doesn’t obviate his obligation as a peace officer charge with maintaining public safety to deescalate a potentially volatile situation. Communicating that message publicly, rather than privately to the Browns, was self indulgent and unbecoming of his position. No matter how you feel about the message the method was poorly chosen

  83. Loomis has defended police officers in the past for controversial social media posts, arguing that the department’s social media policy violates officers’ free speech rights.

In July 2015, the Council on American-Islamic Relations criticized several anti-Islamic tweets posted by an officer who was promoted to a supervisor position.

“We support the First Amendment rights of every American,” Loomis told cleveland.com at the time.
    —————

    Well, how do you do.

  84. I guess it’s too much to expect the head of the Police union to be the bigger man and take the high road. His response is just as juvenile as Crowell’s initial action. So now we can expect that whenever someone disagrees with the Police, they can refuse to do their jobs? So much for professionalism.

Actually, its not their job! Cleveland stadium is a private enterprise and as such does not GET free police off the street to patrol sporting events. They pay for security services as any private enterprise must. If the police decide that they do not wish to work for whatever reason that is their prerogative.

  85. I love it! Cops are tired of being disrespected. Are the police wrong when they shoot anyone? Yes they are. Let them face their own consistence. I bet officers that shoot anyone to death feel it for the rest of their lives. We are all equal. I hope the cops are held accountable for their mistakes. It’s not easy to be a police officer. 90% of them protect us. This guy should apologize and help the Dallas Police department.

Umm punishing everyone for one mans idiocy is stupid.

    ==================================

Don’t blame the police, blame the Browns on this one. This whole problem goes away if they let Crowell go if they decide to keep him and the police don’t work security for them then that’s on the Browns.

The police are not obliged to work NFL games.

  87. It’s not the police departments job to provide security at football games! I work for a private company that provides security at Redskins games and it’s all contract related and decided upon by the team owners! I’m sure if something happened and police needed to be called, they would show up and do their jobs as they always do! Most teams use private security due to the fact that they can provide more manpower than the local police departments are capable of! I can’t blame Loomis for feeling this way, but with that said, it’s not the fault of the Browns organization and the rest of the team and its staff shouldn’t be held responsible for it! Although, if I were the Browns, Crowell would be fined heavily and that money would go to the families of fallen officers around the country! As far as the police killing these two black men last week and any black man in the country, I don’t condone that either but I’m sure if these men were model citizens, they’d still be alive! Along with the white men the police have killed across the country that put themselves in a position to be shot! Which, as a matter of fact, happens at a much higher rate than police kill black men that put themselves in the same situations!

  88. Umm punishing everyone for one mans idiocy is stupid

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

So is blaming all white people for things that happened over 100 years ago, but we’ve had to deal with that.

I say good for the Cleveland police.

  89. Wow, come on. The term Blacklist that was used in an earlier post has about as much to do with race as Blackmail, absolutely none. Term originates back to the Red Scare when some movie makers and actors were suspected of being communist sympathizers, so they were Blacklisted to keep them from getting work.

  90. As others have said It isn’t the the police department’s job to do security at the stadium. That’s true, but the police department and specifically it’s union formally agreed to do security at the stadium. I would presume that a contract between the Browns and Cleveland exists to let the police do security. Police love this kind of duty because it’s easy and usually gives them OT. The union should love this agreement and they are obligated to uphold it, not to mention if they lost this detail due to break out, how can they rectify that with union members ?

  91. Words again weaken supposed men. Man up, ignore the words and get to work boys. It’s just 1 comment by 1 person.

  92. Such hypocritical. Where are the apologies to the 561 dead men this year to the hands of the police? At least the unjust killings we all know where it was an obvious lynching.

  93. Oh no! GWBush is talking again. Plz, if killing cops bring Bush out to talk, plz, stop the violence against cops.

  94. Hmmm… Sounds like Crowell is not the o my one who got emotional.
Neglect your job, because you are offended? We know that blue lives matter. You don’t see cop killers get squirted too often. On the other hand the court system does t seem to value black lives so much.
That pesky fact is something that the blue lives matter folks can’t see.
    Racism gets in your eyes….

  95. Welcome to America in 2016: where freedom of speech is secondary to not hurting anyone’s feelings.

  96. Who says the Cleveland police are blameless in this? They are instigating this as well and building it up, trying to keep people from looking at their misconduct.

He shouldn’t write a check to anyone.
What he should do is some kind of community involvement, since actions speak louder than words.

    >>“He needs to go to Dallas, help the families who lost their loved ones last week, write them a check, look them in the eyes and give a heartfelt apology,” Loomis told TMZ. If Crowell doesn’t, there will be consequences.

  97. Crowell did not apologize, his agent or publicist did. Crowell could live to be 1000 years old and he would still never be able to write the apology attributed to him. Loomis is 100% correct in that he knows this and called it out.

If you want to accelerate the NFL going away please continue to support those that hate, kill and alienate the majority of the audience that financially supports it. You know, because that would be smart.

    Idiots.

  98. Enough with our current law enforcement across this country hijacking civil rights.
Too man officers are unqualified to enforce law, to serve and protect. It should be required that to become cop, you must serve 4 years in the Military to receive proper training to be able to work in high intensity situations.

If cops are threatening the public because their feelings are hurt over some jackass and his social media post…go find a new job,you can’t do the job of serving the community.

Depicting a decapitation is called inciting violence. This past weekend BLM, after the cops deaths, named their upcoming protests, and I quote, A Weekend of Rage. With freedoms come responsibilities. Nothing is absolute. Discussions don’t work when rage is involved.

  100. I guess we’ll expect to see Crowell in the “hate/rioters” section at the upcoming convention in Cleveland?

  101. Police unions represent the biggest bunch of unprofessional whiners in the country.

  102. Too bad some losers here are still beleiving some turd put his hands up and yelled dont shoot. Just like lets not discuss the facts, the loisiana guynhaf a gun and was trying to pull it out to shoot the cops, and the minnesota guy was pulled over for possible armed robery, failed to show his hands when ordered to, reached for something and got shot. Now if your a white cop your shooting because the guy is not obeying you and may want to kill a pig. And were blaiming the cops?????????

  103. Oh, they’re gonna work the games if they want their jobs. Public safety NOT politics.

Stephen Loomis, the president of Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association can stick it. He’s not going to endorse the violation of Cleveland’s citizens civil rights and then tuck tail and ask his union to violate the public trust…. AGAIN!

Dallas police chief David Brown fired 70 officers with this bad attitude in 2009 following 147 excessive force complaints. Last year, there were only 13.

Drop the profiling, bigotry and executions and we’ll support your officers.

  104. You people just don’t get it,it’s not like the cops are working for free and he apologized what more do you want, nobody goes to the parents of the murdered black men, women, and children that are being killed every day! So he shouldn’t have to beg for forgiveness no one else does!!!

  105. @boogerhut – What do “an incitement to violence” or a “Weekend of Rage” have to with Loomis refusing to do his job? Are you saying that Loomis has been called to war against his fellow citizens?

  106. The people that wear that uniform are all that stands between you and anarchy. Crowell doesn’t like or respect them, fine, let them stand aside and give him a good clear look at anarchy.

  107. I guess everyone has to be politically correct nowadays and pretend you love everyone. It’s only going to get worse if nobody wants to speak the truth. I’m glad Crowell is getting the conversation out in the open. I know a lot of cops and their wives and kids. We better stop being hard-headed, and start admitting we can be better human beings. These cops shouldn’t have to fear for their lives, just because we’re too stubborn and lazy to admit we’ve got work to do.

  108. Here’s a wacky idea.

If a police officer tells you to do something, do it. No matter who you are or what color your skin happens to be. Do what they say, because 99% of the time they have a good reason.

If they tell you ‘let me see your hands,’ show them your hands. Be respectful. “Yes, sir.” “No, sir.” (Or ma’am) Compliance with officers orders is a great way to make yourself more likely not to get shot. They’re just humans doing their job. They have good days and bad ones. They will generally treat you with the same respect you show them. They are putting their lives at risk every time they approach a car window, regardless of skin color of the occupant. It’s not just traffic stops though. Though those are extremely dangerous.

They have less than a second to make a life or death decision. Shoot or don’t shoot. They have to live with their decision if they shoot.

Now there are bad cops. But that’s a fraction of a fraction of them. The bad ones should face consequences: the good ones should be thanked at every opportunity and shown respect. This idiot Crowell didn’t show them any respect.

  109. The race battle is just getting stirred up by the media it started with the Michael Brown case and it was shown all over the place thus now people think it’s ok to destroy things and kill. Sad times this country is living in it is extremely fractured right now. Don’t break the law!!! Not hard.

  110. If you are going to judge the cops by a few bad apples then should we judge black people cuz of a few? Crowell, A BLM organizer who does not denounce what happened on Dallas or the murdering idiots in dallas?
Guess we should right? I can’t because I have common sense and I’m not a racial idiot. Sure I’m not alone. I can’t believe he posted that picture. And people are defending him. Hypocrites! Who you gonna call when you need help? The BLM hypocrite protesters?
God bless the good cops!! Thank you for what you do for us!

  111. Wow … you sure can tell who the people are who had run ins with the law on this topic.

It’s weird the other day a black cop shot and killed a black man and nobody cares. Or in Fresno one week before this mess started … an unarmed 19 year old WHITE male was shot and killed on video and nobody cared.

So it looks like an easy solution … let black police officers police the black neighborhoods problem solved.

  112. So I guess this is the new thing now. Threaten to NOT do your job when when someone hurts your little feelings.

Police officers kill people when it isn’t waranted and face little to no discipline, but disrespect them in the least and it’s WWIII.

  113. 0% chance the cops turn the the paid detail to work the Browns game. It’s not like they just get assigned there the Browns have to pay their rate to have them be there. As stated 0% chance they turn down that money…..watch and see

  114. As a Clevelander, I am far more embarrassed by Loomis than offended by Crowell. I’m white and I’ve been assaulted by a Cleveland Police officer. When I complained, they rubber stamped their “review” finding no issue with that officer’s conduct. The only reason he’s off the force now is because he got a DUI.

Police are out of control and have been for some time.

    Welcome to Cleveland, RNC!

  115. What Crowell did was stupid, immature, and naive. He should be punished, if not cut, for doing it.

Police threatening to not do their job and not protect the people of their city in response is stupid, immature, and naive.

Sorry, but two wrongs don’t make a right. There are a lot of actually constructive ways the police could have responded, and this wasn’t one of them.

You’re an idiot, he’s talking about off duty cops working security as sub contractors at games. Hes not talking about them refusing to respond to or assist people if the situation calls for it.

  117. Remember when Cleveland filed in court document demanding Tamir Rice’s estate to pay for the $500 ambulance ride after Cleveland Police shot the 12 year old boy because they thought his toy gun was real?

Yeah, i’d just sit this controversy out Loomis…

  118. Loomis’ comments and tone tells me everything I need to know about his character. Loomis’ entitlement and arrogance is exactly the reason why we find ourselves as a nation in this place today with the police.

Any police officer with that attitude against a citizens freedom of speech (which he is PAID to protect) should be fired on the spot. FIRE LOOMIS!! This type attitude with a badge and a gun, you should be shaking in your boots. BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY ARE NEVER CONVICTED.

  119. An epitome of what is wrong with this country. We don’t want to have anything to do with those that disagree with us. To win a war, you have to win over hearts and minds. This is helping no one.

  120. REALLY??? Would YOU want your young son to meet Loomis in a dark street for a traffic infraction, late at night? Who may as a youth act foolishly. Loomis is just the type of cop who would shoot him DEAD because he stepped on his damn shoes!!!

LOOMIS is paid to protect free speech of citizens and his attitude shows he is there for himself.

Loomis should be fired and any police officer who responds this way and I PROMISE you, the reckless officer killing would go away quickly!!!

Are you blind-or only blinded by your extreme bias? All you have to do is watch either of those videos and/or actually READ an article instead of letting Faux News and Breitbart inform you. Both of these most recent murders committed on black men have been because of overreaction of police…not them being threatened with a gun. Multiple videos have shown that while both men had guns (it’s called the 2nd Amendment and it works for blacks as well as whites) neither one was threatening the police. The young man from St. Paul even told the officer he had the gun and a license. The cop only thought the man matched the description because you know, they all look alike. (/s) Neither of these men were doing anything to warrant even being stopped but you go on and believe that same racist BS being spewed by the echochamber on the right that usually bears no semblance to reality.

The bottom line is there are a whole lot of scared white men who refuse to believe that their fellow Americans deserve to be treated the same as them. I would venture that many of the idiots posting on here believe in their hearts that black folk are inferior to them. I know this because I hear it all the freakin’ time from those who think I agree with them just because I’m white

  122. According to the FBI 93% of the black people killed in America are killed by other black people.
BLM chooses to focus their efforts on the other 7%, why?

  123. I wish people would stop saying conservatives support this type of behavior. I am a conservative and I deplore what Loomis stands for as a police officer or any other public figure. Loomis is paid to protect civil rights such as freedom of speech. And as you can see Loomis doesn’t even know what this means nor does he believe in it. Loomis and types like him should be fired on the spot and you will see reckless police problems go away.

  124. He will never go to Dallas and write a check or apologize to the victims families. never. he is too proud to do that.

  125. Crowell is a private citizen. Loomis is a public servant who is paid to protect our freedom of speech which Crowell un-tastefully exercised. The public will address him. Loomis on the other hand lost his mind and acted like a private citizen instead of a public servant. Now you see how innocent people get killed by the police you say to obey. This issue has NOTHING to do with obeying. These bad cops do not understand they are public servants so if you step on their shoes they fight back for themselves. Loomis needs to be fired. I would not recommend meeting a cop like him in the dark.

  126. I hope the people that hate the police never pick up a phone to call them for any protection or accept any kind of service they might offer you in a time of need.
    ,
Also, the police should avoid the inner cities and don’t police them at and let the citizens police themselves. I would love to see that happen and the results.

For crying out loud…GUN CONTROL… There, I said it.
    ======================================

How’s that working out in Chicago for ya?

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Now don’t make such an idiotic statement as referencing Chicago to support your clear belief that every moron needs easy access to guns (which is EXACTLY what you’re promoting). One city – trying to do SOMETHING to stem the insane level of gun violence in it’s streets – can’t really do a DAMN THING when the rest of the country doesn’t really do squat to help along with reducing gun violence. Guns will easily find their way into ANY city in America unless the entire country is unified in Gun Control.

I live in Canada and, end to end, province to province – just as in countries like the UK and Australia – we have Gun Control initiatives firmly in place. Not just a place like Regina, Sask. or Montreal, QC – or London or Sydney – the entire damn country. And guess what? While we can’t 100% ensure or fully control that NO ONE dies at the hands of a gun, we all do a heck of a better job of it than what goes on in the US!

Guess what the GREAT SIDE BENEFIT of this ‘Gun Control’ is? Little kids can run around the neighbourhood with toy guns, pretty-much without fear of being mistaken for carrying the real deal and being a threat to anyone’s safety, and they AREN’T going to be shot down dead by one of our Police Officers. With Gun Control here, an officer – by and large – can approach the majority of their interactions and service-calls WITHOUT the very real fear of being shot at. In America, the prevalence of guns makes EVERY interaction potentially a life and death one. THAT is the sad reality of guns in America.

I know, I know – guns don’t kill people, people kill people…but people who don’t have guns absolutely CANNOT gun down a half-dozen innocent folks in a few brief moments of time.

I just have to SMH at the mess some of you are content to live with – and sadly justify as being the way things should be. Have some decency, healthy respect for others and a personal sense of accountability, realize that ALL LIVES MATTER, don’t put yourself in a situation where YOU’RE seen as an outright threat to anyone and the odds are that you, your loved ones and folks that have to interact with you along the way will all sleep just a little better and likely live just a little longer. You’ll also live with a little less paranoia – and that’s good for the soul.

    Back to Football…please!

    ONE NATION!

  128. I see multiple posts criticizing Loomis for a lack of “professionalism”. Loomis is leader of the Police UNION – not a spokesman for the Police Department. As head of the union, his #1 job is ensuring that the union members (police officers) are taken care of – including that they have as safe of a work environment as possible. Now if this country was not cursed with a political class and a media establishment populated by witless, spineless, unprincipled, low life scum (not to mention the brainless twits who blindly follow them), this whole ridiculous narrative that police officers go out on watch looking for young black men to kill would never have gained traction and officers in Dallas, Louisiana, NY, etc. would not have been assassinated. Threatening to chose not to work Cleveland Browns game (whether it carries much weight or not) is about the only tool he has in his toolbox to motivate the Browns organization and the City’s political leaders to do the right thing.

  129. I think there has been like 600 plus deaths by police so far this year in the US.

Iceland has only had one person shot and killed by a police in the entire history of its country.

When people say cops kill more white than blacks i just smh. As if the message is for blacks to shut up and take it like white people do.

  130. Officers killed in Dallas was stupid in every sense of the word. Those police were no doubt good cops. The problem I have with Loomis is his outrage. What Crowell did was wrong in every way. However, no one got injured or killed by Crowell’s stupidity. Loomis on the other hand didn’t speak out against police that killed an unarmed man in CLEVELAND. He didn’t show the madness he is showing now. Why did he not demand police go write the family of the “unarmed” man that gunned down BY CLEVELAND POLICE a check and give a heart felt apology. I agree with Loomis that there must be some form of discipline for Crowell. I’m not so sure it should be what Loomis is calling for. Sounds like a double standard.

  131. @jbraider- Loomis is the union head, but he’s still a cop employed by the citizens of Cleveland. How is he making it safer for police by stirring up more emotions? Will Cleveland residents support the police not doing their jobs simply because their feelings are hurt?

  132. I get their anger, but what part of the police not working Browns games qualifies as protecting or serving? Or is that not what police sign up for any more?

Lots of professions take oaths to help represent people they don’t like. Medical professionals, public defenders, etc. You can’t shirk your duty just because of one jerk wagon.

  133. Well, since my first comment wasn’t posted (too truthful I guess), let me just be short and sweet about it: seems to me that many folks commenting here want a race war. My advice? Move to the rural remote…I did 35 years ago and boy and I glad!

  134. @cardinalsfan20- If I’m a police officer in Cleveland or anywhere else and my LIFE is being put in jeopardy because political and community leaders (i.e. people who occupy positions of trust and who bear the responsibility for ensuring public safety) are instead inflaming tensions for their own political benefit, you better believe I am going to remind the people that they need me a lot more than I need them. You ask how he is making it safer “stirring up more emotions”? How did it make it safer when the cops said nothing after officers in LA and NY were gunned down in cold blood after previous officer-involved shooting incidents (while our precious Attorney General sides with the demonstrators)
