The Von Miller contract details

The Von Miller deal is done. Mike Klis of 9news.com in Denver has most of the details. Here they are:

1. $23 million signing bonus;

2. $2 million “salary and workout bonus other bonuses” for 2016, all guaranteed. (It’s technically too late to earn workout bonuses; the offseason program is over.)

3. $17 million in salary and bonuses for 2017, fully guaranteed.

4. $19 million salary and bonuses for 2018, guaranteed for injury only at signing and fully guaranteed on March 2017.

5. $17.5 million in salary and bonuses, $9 million of which is guaranteed for injury only at signing, in 2019. The $9 million becomes fully guaranteed in March 2018.

6. A total of $36 million in salary and bonuses for 2020 and 2021 combined. None of which is guaranteed.

It works out to $42 million fully guaranteed at signing, $61 million fully guaranteed by March 2017, and $70 million fully guaranteed by March 2018.

As a practical matter, he’ll get the $70 million. If they cut him before March 2017, they’ll have $35.4 million in dead money under the cap. If they cut him before March 2018, they’ll have $32.8 million in dead money under the cap.

So it’s a three-year, $70 million deal with a team option, year-to-year, for the back end at three more years and an extra $44.5 million.

In all, it’s the richest deal ever given to a defensive player. Imagine how much more he would have gotten if he’d been able to go to the open market.

  1. Im not sure he would get that much more on the open market. He is worth more to Denver than anyone else. The deal makes sense now because Denver wont be paying big $$ to a QB in the next 3 years now that Luck is locked up and Peyton is gone.

  2. This Bronco fan thinks it was a bad idea to spend so much money a player who has had one superb post season and other wise a mixed bag over the years.

Just glad it wasn’t my money.

  3. “Imagine how much more he would have gotten if he’d been able to go to the open market.”

To bad the NFLPA cannot into CBA negotiations, right?

  4. Michael Bennett can’t wait for the offseason.

    1. JJ Watt
    2. Michael Bennett
    3. Von Miller
    4. Ndomakong Sue
    5. M. Wilkerson

  5. Also, why didn’t you spend some of that cash on Ryan Fitzpatrick? He’s better than Manning was last year and you won a Super Bowl with him.

And Von beats Elway!!! No one thought Elway would cough up that much
    ____________

Surprise. Surprise. Similar to first one. Only moved guarantee dates up which was expected.

Now the press conference where they all act lovey dovey. Just like every year and every franchise tag. Will anyone in media remember this next year? Of course not. Just rev up clicks with constant articles of how this negotiation is different and impossible.

Now let’s hope there’s enough left for Sanders.

  7. So proud of the best Front Office in the NFL. Over the last three seasons, John Elway and the Broncos completely changed their identity from the embarrassment that was SB 48 vs Seattle to becoming SB 50 Champs last season…and the core of our best players, Von Miller, Demaryius Thomas, Chris Harris Jr, Derek Wolfe, and Brandon Marshall, are all still intact, all the while finding a way to strengthen their biggest weakness by signing OT’s Russell Okung and Donald Stephenson to bolster the O-Line. They also hung on to previous big money free agent’s DeMarcus Ware, TJ Ward and Aqib Talib. The Broncos now retain the deepest talent of any NFL roster, and go into the season completely locked and loaded to defend their AFC West and Super Bowl title. So go ahead and knock Mark Sanchez if you like, he strill has as many AFCG appearances as all the rest of the AFCW QB’s combined….oh, and Raiderfan, you officially have a two year window before you will have to surpass Von’s contract for Kahlil, and your over-rated QB wants to get paid as a franchise QB….tick, tock, we got our rings…

  8. Good thing football is not a team sport! These deals never work out. Danny gone malik gone talib shot himself. At least they signed derek wolfe!! Hope gotsis pans out in 2 years because they wont get the free agents with buttfumbler they got with manning.

  9. Oh, and BTW, for all the faux criticism of John Elway, he is looking like the only GM of the Franchise players that will get a long term deal done today…

  10. I think the Broncos over paid, and I doubt he’d get much more on the open market.
    Maybe an extra 1MM/year?

The problem I have with the contract is he’ll make 70MM over 3 years (over paid) and then he’ll be 30ish, and unlikely to produce as well, so the surplus value those last 3 years will be minimal.

    Terrible deal for Denver.

  11. Now the “Acid Test” begins…

Will he “choke” under the expectations that come with such an enormous contract?

Will he be the same “Von Miller?”

    We’re about to find out.

  12. Good for him. Can this now please be the end of the Von Miller stream of consciousness reporting? No single player in any sport deserves as much ink as he has gotten – on his CONTRACT nonetheless. Sheesh.

I agree, this looks like a very top of the market deal.

  14. This is just a stupid deal…IMHO this does not make Elway or the front office look good at all.
I don’t think any team would have paid him anywhere close to this…and if they did, they are stupid too.
I think every other team is probably pissed now because their “stars” are going to want to outdo this deal…and it will continue to spiral out of control…it’s not “fair market” value but the rookie scale all over again.

  15. I don’t think he would have gotten this much on the open market actually. 3 yrs at $70 mil is steep.

Before people say it’s out of whack, take a look at NBA and MLB contracts. Von Miller still doesn’t make as much as some rather mediocre MLB and NBA players. Mike Conley, PG with Grizzlies, just signed for 5 yrs at $153MM! He’s definitely not worth that. Quite a few pitchers make $25MM+ working every 5 days. All of it is insane.

  16. “In all, it’s the richest deal ever given to a defensive player. Imagine how much more he would have gotten if he’d been able to go to the open market.”

We’re still waiting to hear how becoming the highest paid non-QB ever is somehow a rip-off for the player.

  17. Mack is 5 times the player Miller is and costs so much less, just the facts, Donkey boy.

  18. good glad he got paid , and glad to know next year Broncos will have a difficult time with cap space to sign guys like Emmanuel Sanders, Slyvester Williams , Darian Stewart, Demarcus Ware, and still will need a qb

agreed he would not get that much anywhere else.
You can’t compare the MLB, NBA, and NFL straight up like that because the number of games differ significantly between the sports.

    Conley $373,170 per game (82 games/yr)
    Von $1,458,333 per game (16 games/yr)
    Pitcher at 25 mil $154,320 per game (162 games/yr)

Hand in your Broncos card. From defensive rookie of the year to SB MVP is a “mixed bag”? Pass the blunt, you’re high.

  21. He’s a generational pass rusher. My chart says those guys get paid along with elite CBs and QBs. People are so bitter they don’t want anybody to get paid. What difference does it make to you? Denver won’t have to pay a QB until the time this contract will be renegotiated on the back end, so what are you whining about?

Pass the kool aid this way….PFF has the bronco’s o-line ranked 28th in the NFL, and ranked 29th at QB…have to admit your d is solid, but losing Danny T, and Malik Jackson will hurt some. Time will tell, but will be difficult to repeat as NFL Champs again

  23. lucky the broncos don’t have a qb they have to pay that almost 20M a season to

i just can’t believe that a position other than QB, no matter how good, is worth 1/6 of the salary cap, the value just isn’t there

i think von is a great player, but can’t we all agree his value was inflated playing opposite demarcus ware? i wouldn’t be surprised if Von was the type of player who got fat and happy once he got paid

He was great as a rookie and then peaked his second year. Since then he has been up and down…including last year which was by far his worst. His best play last year was in the post season but I assure you he was no where near that level during the season.
He is a good, but IMHO he is not worth this kind of money or anything close to it.
I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see this turning out good. Either his play is going to drop…further or he’s going to be injured and we have to pay him 70mil plus find a replacement and somehow pay them as well.

  25. I think its hilarious that so many people believe that Miller is a one dimensional one trick pony. He’s probably the best all around defender the NFL has ever seen. I’d love, for example, to see Mack or Houston isolated on a WR and answer by breaking up a wheel route 25 yards down the field. Miller also sets a mean edge and, in general, is an elite run defender. The man is a legitimate superstar, and being jealous of the Denver Broncos doesn’t make that magically untrue.

  26. That moan we heard off in the distance was Tom Brady!

“Not only am I suspended four games, Von Miller is going to be mean to me again.”

  27. Tb12 is laughing! Paying all that money to a ped user will backfire real quick. No incentive to use now with all the guarantees.

  28. The Broncos are the ones laughing at the pats since the Broncos have a 4 game head start for home field. Tom Brady gets ripped apart in Denver that’s just real.

Great signing by the Broncos anyone mad about it is a jealous hater period.

Any misconceived notions on Millers talent or production should be credited accordingly to the bozo coaches who didn’t know how to use him properly. Wade Phillips doesn’t have that problem.

Von tested out of the substance abuse program. If he tests positive again he goes back into stage 1 and is subject to increases testing but faces no suspension.

Just wanted to clear a few myths up. Great day for Broncos nation and for Von couldn’t be happier.

  29. Rip off!

Dude is not worth that much. Will be another Fat Albert Haynesworth and get extremely lazy after getting huge payday.

Watch his numbers decline and he won’t get 10 sacks this season.

  30. Yahoos just throwing out superlatives and affirmations about how great Miller is and what he’s going to do are going to get yet another bad lesson about sports and big talk. Only evidence rules, and the evidence has not been shown yet that he’s going to earn all that money on the field or even that he stays on the field — only the guaranteed money is guaranteed, and only for Miller. Great for the AFC rivals for the next several years and for Miller.

Wonderful article written a few weeks ago about whether current GMs are making major mistakes tying up big percentage of cap money on defenders for years and years — in the AFC East all freaked out about stopping the Pats.

There’s a reason the ’85 Bears, 2000 Ravens and 2013 Seahawks didn’t repeat. World class defenses only win championships solo once a great, great while — and then never again. The Legion of Boom dun boomed itself right out of the 4th quarter of SB49, all gassed and dinged up.

So it’s quite possible Denver doesn’t even get back to the playoffs, and I’m happy to lay even money on it.

    Remember this in January. 🙂

  31. It’s good to know that Von will be able to support his arse-buddy Manziel in the manner to which he’s become accustomed. Until the end of time…

  32. Von tested positive for Adderall in 2011 that is the extent of ped use. Following Richard Sherman’s positive test he responded by saying “half the league uses adderall.

Von had major ACL surgery and missed most of the 2014 offseason, took him time to get back into form.
