NFL goes on record with denial of Goodell effort to scrap Ballers

Getty Images

After initially declining comment regarding the claim from Ballers executive producer Mark Wahlberg that Commissioner Roger Goodell personally called Wahlberg in an effort to kill the show, the NFL has opted to go on the record to say that Goodell did no such thing.

“Love Marky Mark (good vibrations is a classic) but this call from [Goodell] never happened,” fairly new NFL senior V.P. of communications Natalie Ravitz said on Twitter.

The tweet was directed to Deadspin’s story regarding Wahlberg’s claim that a call was made. Ravitz directed similar tweets to Bleacher Report and the Hollywood Reporter regarding their stories passing along Wahlberg’s claim.

This stream of tweets marks a sharp reversal for the league regarding Ballers. Previously, the league ignored the show, which brazenly uses team names and logos and characterizes NFL players in a manner similar to the long-defunct Playmakers show on ESPN, which the league specific tried to (and did) eliminate. Indeed, when PFT specifically asked the league office whether the call happened, the league office’s official position was that it declined comment.

Maybe in this age of social-media and Pokemon Go the best way to get the league office to go on the record is to tweet an allegation as gospel truth without asking for comment first and wait for someone to respond on Twitter. Unless, of course, the report in question is that 11 of 12 footballs confiscated from Marky Mark’s favorite team were at least 2.0 pounds under the minimum PSI required by rule.

The patently false claim still has never been corrected, by Ravitz or anyone else employed by the NFL.

  1. “The patently false claim still has never been corrected, by Ravitz or anyone else employed by the NFL.”
Donovan McNabb, Aaron Rodgers, Terry Bradshaw, Ben Roethlisberger, and the many more I’ve forgotten all wave Hi to PFT.

  2. League is lying no doubt.

Anyone who believes a single word out of Goodell’s mouth or his representatives at this point hasn’t been paying attention.

Well other than, “give us all your money to poor, desperate billionaires don’t have enough”.

  3. Goodell is a hero and is not a liar.

He should have a statue erected erected at Gillette.
cheaters will not be tolerated under Goodell so Bobby Kraft and Tommy Brady should play by the rules.

Every title they have is tainted and UNearned.

Roger Goodell is applauded by all of the 31 LEGIT teams

    ***********************
They can’t correct it because it was their pwn leak and Goodell has made a rule that says the NFL makes no mistakes. The 2nd circuit court OK’ed this.

  5. Pretty simple, if Wahlberg really wants to prove the call, just have one of his assistants get the phone records.

It would be pretty funny if Wahlberg can prove Roger and the League office would even lie about this.

  6. Thank you for the last sentence.
So very true. They had the halftime numbers for both teams and flat out refused to release, instead opting to lie about the Patriots PSI.

With Wahlberg being a huge Pats fans,
would love to see some truth spun on the show and then have DW tell Goodell to lighten up, it’s just a fictional show.

  7. To be fair, you also believe the “deflator” was named si because of a weight loss regime. That is where my definition of a “patently false” statement immediately goes to.

  8. How have you shown that it is “patently false”? I’m almost as confused as you seem to be.

Every reputable scientist who has reviewed it has proven it to be patently false. The air pressure was right where it was supposed to be, giving starting pressure, atmospheric conditions, and the ideal gas law.

    Where is the confusion?

  9. My team got caught cheating again and I’m so bitter about it I need someone else to blame than my patriots. So I’m going to bash and blame Goodell for everything.

  10. More like we see so many lies from the NFL offices that we can’t believe you let your hatred of a great team blind you from the truth right in font of you.

Don’t worry. Your team is next.

My team hasn’t accomplished a fraction of what the patriots have over the last 15 years so I will take every baseless accusation, controversial referee decision, and innovative patriots trick play as a basis to accuse the pats of cheating their way to an unprecedented run of success. It feels better than admitting they are just better.

  12. Here we go…proven serial liar Goodell is at it again. The most corrupt commissioner of any sport in history. Destroying the game I used to love.

Your team still sucks and you’re so jealous that you’re willing to ignore basic laws of physics and believe in a proven liar.

In most places, these kinds of people need professional help. Apparently in your fantasy world, it’s just normal.

  16. —— Anyone that watches the videos mentioned below will quickly realize that all the individuals that conducted the tests are much more intelligent than those still saying “cheaters”.

—— While watching you should understand that it was 49 degrees on January 18, 2015 when The Patriots played The Colts.

—— The PSI measurements for the Colts and Patriots footballs are available on a popular information site beginning with “Wik…. And the topic page is Deflategate”.

—– You should also consider that in some of these videos it is evident based on what the people say that some were not yet aware of the false 6 month ESPN report claiming that all but one of the Patriots footballs were a full 2 PSI below 12.5 PSI. It was later reported that only one football had a reading below 2 PSI.

—– You should also remember that none of the talking heads in the news ever mentioned rain as a second factor that contributed to the natural deflation of footballs.

—– Anyone can find these videos by using the popular search site that begins with “Yah…” and searching for the titles online. The videos can all be found as links to the popular online video site with a name beginning with “You…”.

I would love to see any hater attempt to refute any information in those videos.
It would be especially entertaining to see a hater attempt to refute the MIT professor with a PHD that put his reputation online for anyone to critique when he presented his findings and methodology.

  17. —— So an extremely wealthy person wants the latest smart phone and can afford one. He wipes the data off the old phone, which is what intelligent people do. The NFL was never going to receive his personal telephone. The NFL had no right to examine a personal telephone.

Some must think that NFL is a law enforcement agency that could have demanded his phone if it wasn’t “destroyed”. Some must also believe that in America people have to surrender their privacy rights and prove their innocence to someone accusing them of something. The NFL used the media to market the sensational word “destroyed” so gullible people were duped.

—— A guy having part time job of inflating and deflating footballs to get them within the league mandated 12.5 to 13.5 PSI can call himself “deflator” for whatever silly reason he wants to. Contrary to many believe, nobody else called him deflator. There was zero evidence that anyone wanted to use footballs that were below 12.5 PSI.

If the equipment guy was also in charge of spraying the building for pests and called himself “terminator” would you be saying that Tom Brady is guilty of killing people? People die all the time and the cold deflates footballs and both occur naturally so the analogy is fair.

Only fools that believe that they have psychic powers would think that they can infer any guilt of Tom Brady because that part time employee used a single word during the off season. You didn’t seem to hear about the other evidence where it was stated that Tom Brady asked to have the footballs set at 12.5 PSI and asked them to remind the officials of the PSI rules prior to games.

Plus claims of “cheating” become even more ridiculous when people must deny proven science and video evidence from tests to believe that the footballs were deflated by anything other from cold and wet weather conditions.

The people still saying “cheaters” sound absolutely ridiculous when it is known that the NFL is still keeping the 2015 PSI information secret.

  18. first of all, there is no rule against making a team think you are cheating. Once you are in an opponents (or a knucklehead fan) head, they spend more time and energy chasing ghosts rather than devising a game plan to stop the patriots. Owners finally got fed up and just made up some crap and forced it down the patriots throats. So I guess intelligence and counter intelligence has its price especially when dealing with the nfl leadership that lack intelligence. BOOM!

  19. The Pats are messing with your minds, guys. He wants you to think he’s cheating. They want you to think he knows your entire game plan. The balls have magnets and special laser locating devices in them. All part of the counter Intel smoke screens Billy Bs boys have been doing for years. If fans are going crazy and questioning pure science and physics, what do you think opposing players and coaches are doing?

  20. Good ell also claimed to never have seen the rice video sent to his office. There’s a reason why 2 federal judges called good ell a liar.

  21. Deflategate has proven that Goodell speaks with a forked tongue!

He still insists that cold weather doesn’t affect psi, yet he sent tampering warning letters to Carolina and Minnesota when they were caught on live TV warming up their footballs on the sidelines.

NE was punished for having illegally low footballs during the AFCCG. The Colts also had footballs that were illegally low, but despite their reputation as one of the dirtiest teams in NFL history they received no penalty. They even admitted in the Wells Report that they were the ones who tampered with the football Jackson intercepted!

The NFL lawyers lied several times during the appeal and were called on it. Somehow, Chin even referenced the lies believing them as facts!

Chin ruled that the NFL can violate US labor laws, as well as the Constitution!

Big Ben could have been suspended for the murders Ray Lewis participated in!

Aaron Rodgers could be banished for setting his TP roll so that the paper is under!

Eli could sit out a full season for wearing blue socks on a Thursday! 8 games if he wore them on Friday.

Red Rocket could miss games for buying Wonder Bread!

Unless you are a fan of the Broncos, Colts, Ravens, or Jets, you should be afraid! The Saints, Dolphins, Pats, and Chiefs know what I mean!

  22. So now according to NE fans the Pats are not actually cheating, they are only giving the appearance that they are cheating in order to play mind games on the their opponents. Never mind the burnt spygate tapes or the massive fines and lost draft picks for cheating.

    LOL!

Put down the crack pipes, Pats fans.

  23. I literally believe nothing Goddell or the NFL say.

Tomorrow they could tell me the sky is blue and i’d immediately start re-evaluating my understanding of both the sky and the color wheel.

  24. Or maybe they are cheating… hold on… (Hits crack pipe) … It’s obviously got you amp ‘d about burned tapes with secret illuminati messages on them … (exhales) … They lost twice to the Giants in the super bowl to throw fans off to their cheating… But yous guys too smart to fall for it… and I’m the one smacking crack?

The person in this video was still believing the false report claiming that 11 of 12 of the Patriots footballs was 2 PSI below the mandatory 12.50 PSI. This person did not give consideration to the fact that the footballs were wet. It I known that wet footballs can stretch some and increase the volume inside the football. Not taking rain into account and not having the actual PSI measurements is what led to the incorrect conclusion in the above video.

Listening to similar conclusions by “experts” is why many people still believe that the Patriots deflated footballs. This person could have avoided making a wrong conclusion if they had the following PSI information which indicates that only one Patriots footballs had a measurement at 10.50 PSI or 2 PSI below 12.5 PSI:

    Patriots football #1 11.50 — 11.80
    Patriots football #2 10.85 — 11.20

#1 your a complete fool. #2 there is ZERO proof either way that weather can do this do footballs. I 100% think the patriots cheated, and in no way am i using science b/c the FACT is that no matter what anyone claims, NOT ONE person has physically proven weather could do this. #3, the MOST deflated any colts ball could have possibly gotten (if all started at 13.5) was 1.2 psi low. Of the 24 readings for patsies balls, 13 of theirs were MORE than 1.2 psi low. If it was weather, all balls would deflate around the same range. Weather doesnt pick and choose which balls to affect. #3 this is gillete, there are MUCH colder stadiums. Aaron Rodgers has said he likes his balls fully inflated. If cold weather in Gillete can get a ball to drop 2.0 psi in one half of football, imagine how much it’ll drop in Green Bay over the course of a full game………prob around 3 psi. Never once has a football player said “hey i like my balls firm and these are gettting flat”. In the HISTORY of the game, no QB has ever noticed the phenomenon? That to me seems just ridiculous. Eli spends 3 months preparing his balls, in cold NY games his balls could lose 15-20% of their inflation and Eli just doesnt notice? Your insane to think that. Every qb knows EXACTLY what psi their balls are at.Tom claimed he didnt even know about PSI or any rule until 2014……..yet in ’07 he lobbied to get rid of low PSI rule……..if ur lying about anything, then ur guilty.

  32. Why didn’t Goodell say he didn’t do it? He had someone else say that claims of him calling Wahlberg trying to end the show were false. How does Natalie Ravitz know what Goodell did? Went from the best organization to becoming nearly as corrupt as the government politicians. I mean from the head of officiating breaking down the worst calls from the weekend, to Goodell, to deflategate, to …pick your poison but this league has turned into a huge conspiracy theorists wet dream. Get it together before we lose the sport, permanently.
