Lack of extensions for Carroll, Schneider should concern Seahawks fans

Things have been quiet for the Seahawks lately. But for the wedding of quarterback Russell Wilson, there’s been no news. And no news, in the offseason, is good news.

But it’s not good news that there’s no news regarding the contracts of coach Pete Carroll and G.M. John Schneider. ESPN’s John Clayton recently explained why there should be cause for concern in the Pacific Northwest.

In an interview with ESPN 710 in Seattle, Clayton eventually pointed to the possibility that, after 2016, Carroll could walk out the door and return to Los Angeles. Taking Schneider with him, possibly.

“You know Pete wants to stay [in Seattle], he wants to finish what he started and see how far he can take this Super Bowl run,” Clayton said. “You have two teams in the division and one spot like Los Angeles — where Pete came from with USC — and I don’t think you want to go that direction. It’s like, just get this thing done now.”

Clayton points out that Seahawks owner Paul Allen has the money to get both deals done quickly. The question becomes whether Allen is willing to give Carroll and Schneider what they want; after all, really rich guys didn’t get that way (and they won’t stay that way) by paying too much for things. And Allen may think that Schneider, whom Clayton thinks wants $4 million per year, may want too much.

With another really rich guy in L.A. named Stan Kroenke, who would possibly love to bring Carroll back to the Coliseum for a couple of years before christening Kroenkeworld, Allen may have to dig deep to avoid a Parcells-style intra-division defection, without the draft-pick compensation.

  1. Well, if there’s an upgrade for LA, a free Carroll it is.

However, Carroll and Schneider deserve 3-year extensions with high salaries but early avoidance. Frankly, if someone needs to go, it’s Tom Cable. He’s a good offensive line coach but has a bad o-line??

  2. FYI the owners don’t pay coaches and GM’s the franchises do. It’s called a business. Now the owners authorize hiring/firing of staff but they don’t pay out of their own wad of cash.

  3. Paul Allen does not care about the money. This is his way of motivating these two guys to the next level. Allen has raised the bar. Success means that both men get a raise. Failure could mean something else. The team is at a point, because of their success, that NFL domination is very hard to accomplish. I think Allen must have realistic expectations. If the Seahawks go deep into the playoffs, Carroll and Schneider have done their jobs. If they win another Super Bowl, the players have done their jobs.

  4. It’s the beginning of the end in Seattle. Their o-line is garbage, no one knows if Rawls is going to be able to produce. Their wr’s are average at best. Their defense is pretty good, but not what it once was. Same thing happened in San Fran. Reports started coming out about the head coach and it trickled down. Seattle “fans” will deny it, because they are new fans and don’t want to face reality that they will become irrelevant again. You’ll see the fans jump ship again. You’ll hear some of the fans saying how they’ve been fans since 1976, but were born in the 1990’s. Or how storied their franchise is, when they’re 3 games above .500 in their history. 7-9 at best this year, Stinky Pete will bail out and the “fans” will be Rams fans, Raiders fans, Pats fans, Steelers fans again.

  5. Negotiations should start at the two-year franchise tag value for coaches and GMs. If Carroll and Schneider don’t get that as a minimum guaranteed, they should hold out.

  6. A good GM, who drafts well is worth the extra money.
Look at teams with clowns as GMs.
If a franchise is worth a Billion, why skimp on the GM?

  7. Why would Allen want to leave a team that he helped build and is very good?
How much extra money would it be worth it for him to leave?
If he’s making (pick a number 3.25MM) then would 4MM be the difference maker?
It also depends on how much he’s worth.
I’m not convinced he’ll move for 15% more.

  8. Everybody has their own walk in life. Not everybody wants to coach to the age of 86 like Paterno and Bowden. Either way Carroll’s timing has always been pretty good. He certainly left USC at the right time.

  9. Schneider…… if you are second guessing paying him 4mil a year then you are an idiot.

The money he saves you with his great late round picks alone is worth that.

  10. Carroll and Schneider are really the heart and soul of that team. They know what they are doing and have made the Seahawks a new version of the Patriots. Without those two that team will sink back into a mediocre 8-8 team. And if you are correct in their relocating back to LA and dumping Fisher then I would contemplate following the Rams again. (I was a season ticket holder for 20 years at the coliseum until they left town for more $$$)

  11. They’ll both sign before the season starts. Carroll for $10 million per year, Schneider for $5 million. Go Hawks!

  12. I am not a Seahawks fan at all, but Carroll is just the kind of dirtbag who would walk out on the Seahawks and everything that they have built there just to stroke his ego.

Dude bailed out of USC right as the anvils started dropping on everyone but him.

  13. The other thing about Schneider is his ties to Green Bay and with his parents still living here, he may want to come back to the area. TT isn’t going to be around forever and I could see them talking to him about stepping down if the timing works out for Schneider to return.

  14. After that botched call during the Super Bowl that anyone with common sense knows cost the Seahawks a second straight Super Bowl title. I don’t think many Seahawks will lose sleep over losing Carroll. I still can’t believe he screwed that up. That is just unforgiveable.

  15. DVD man…
Get over it. Everyone else has.
    More games and championships ahead

Come back to me in twelve more years and maybe I will stop laughing. The Seahawks didn’t even win their division last year. Two good seasons does not equal fifteen.

  17. LOL, they’re not going anywhere. Even if they did, odds are they’ve already hit the apex of what they’re going to accomplish.

You were a season ticket holder at the Coliseum for 20 years before The Rams left for St. Louis? Considering they played at Anaheim Stadium you must have had a pretty good selection of seat choices.

  19. This is much ado about nothing. PC/JS aren’t going anywhere. They will be in Seattle as long as they want to be. Paul Allen is not going to do anything to upset this particular apple cart.

  20. There are really rich guys and then there is Paul Allen and Bill Gates.

Allen could pay Carroll 200 million a year and it wouldn’t affect one iota of his life.

  21. Peter the Cheater will go where the most money is… loyal to nothing and no one except cash….

You’ll have to excuse these Seattle “fans” who claim they’ve been Seattle fans since 1976, when in reality, they were born in the 1990’s. They are 3 games above .500 in their “storied” franchise and one superbowl ring. They will always have the dumbest play in all of sports though, so at least they have that.

  23. it’s laughable to suggest Allen got rich by ‘not overpaying’ for things. Guy was in the right place at the right time and was friends with the right person…Bill Gates.

He is as much of an imposter as the PEDhawks are…

  24. I wouldn’t give carroll an extension either.

Not when you blow a chance for back to back championships with the WORST call in Super Bowl history.

I’m a huge Seahawk fan and don’t really like the patriots (not because of #deflategate or any other #gate for that matter), but I have to agree with you. We haven’t been the consistent monster that the patriots have. Way to early to saying we are a version of NE….I do think we have an opportunity to get there, but LONG ways from that happening.

  27. They have to resign them!! The Seahawks are the greatest team of all time and will win the the next 5 Superbowls! The fans are not delusional!!! GO HAWKS!!!!!

  28. The last time they signed extensions, you didn’t know about it until 3 weeks afterwards.

  29. Sounds like a made up story that has absolutely no merit and is just some opinion that means nothing. No way they leave Seattle. They’ve built a great contender they aren’t going to walk away from. Just a typical offseason story before training camp while nothing important is happening.

  30. Very few comments here from real Seahawks fans because we all recognize there is no story here. Pete and John will both be back with very good, long term deals and the roll continues.

    Go Hawks!

  31. hey northernwisc, I think GB wants to stay in house with Eliot Wolf instead. But Seattle is a one hit one wonder. They should have never went back to the Super Bowl period! Seahawk fans should be handing out thank you gifts to Mark Barron for injuring Carson Palmer for the season and giving you hope, and Mike McCarthy for choking in the NFCCG and Blair Walsh for missing that kick. Time is running out in Seattle. This team is overrated! The only talent they have is Earl Thomas at FS and Bobby Wagner. Outside of that the rest of that talent is mid level players. I’m tried of you dumb Hawk fans spitting stats at me. Stats really don’t matter. Congrats you use the internet to troll me with useless stats. Just because RW is “great” doesn’t mean crap. Because this day and age it’s all about trophies.

  32. Schneider already has an opt-out clause to return to GB if the opportunity ever presents itself. This might be why Mark Murphy says there is a succession plan in place, but can’t elaborate any further. At the very least, this gives Schneider very credible leverage to squeeze Allen for the money he wants to remain there.

  33. Both are very, very good, but I thought even Schneider has said in the past that he eventually wanted to get back to WI? In about every way imaginable, LA is about as far from WI as you can get.

Maybe 15 years or so before they moved the Rams were in Anaheim. 20 years before they were definitely in the Coliseum.

  36. Two words why they aren’t going anywhere:

    Russell Wilson

Good luck trying to find a franchise QB. Why do you think Belicheck has stayed so long with the Pats? Tom Brady.

    Get the point?

Silly comment! USC was sanctioned because a sports agent, who happened to be a USC alum, bought Reggie Bush’s parents a house in exchange for them making sure that Bush would sign with him. The women’s basketball and volley ball teams had recruiting violations. NONE of these had anything to do with Carroll. At the same time, the Seahawks offered him a job in Seattle.

It’s incorrect that Carroll “bailed” out of USC. That’s just a myth perpetuated by people who have ZERO football knowledge.

Not saying that the Hawks are in Patriots territory, but most of their fans are very loyal and have been fans for at least 15 years. The Seahawks have made the playoff in 11 of the last 14 years…only the Patriots have been more often, 12 times in the last 14 years.

The Seahawks have also been to the SB 3 times in the last decade. No other team has been to the SB more often in that decade.

WOW! Every single thing you said is wrong. Allen and Gates were childhood friends. Allen actually came up with the idea of developing their own operating system and selling it to IBM. Neither of them actually developed the system…it was something they bought from another company and proceeded to sell it to IBM 5 years later. He is, if anything, more resposible for founding Microsoft than Gates.

Regarding your reference to PED’s, the Seahawks are actually less guilty than most NFL teams. They had a total of only 5 players (all of them were let go) suspended for PED’s, but all of them were for Adderall. Adderall is not even a PED anymore in the NFL. It would be similar to calling cocaine or pot a PED. NOBODY uses Adderall prior to a game. It makes people really high. I don’t think anyone could even play under its influence. The reason it’s no longer a PED is because the effects only last about 8 hours…if a player tests positive in May, it does NOTHING to enhance performance in September. So technically, the Hawks have never had a player suspended for real PED’s. It’s not like they did steroids or HGH. BTW, no Seahawk has tested positive for Adderall in over 3 years. Get with the times dude!

Are you talking about this decade that we are currently in because we’ve only been to two. Or Are you talking about in the last ten years to kind of count the Superbowl we went to ten years ago???…. These are adjusted stats to make it seem like the Seahawks have been at the top of the league for longer than they really have. 2005 Yes we were a great team. Then after that we fell off pretty hard once we lost Steve Hutch and Tatupu was like not even on the field… Stop coming up with these random stats that only make the Seahawks great. Patriots have four rings, we have 1(should’ve had two or possibly three if you want to talk about the first one). Plain and simple….Seahawks will be competitive for a long time no doubt about that. I love this team. Just not trying to portray something that we aren’t!

  41. Seattle should try winning its division before it starts talking about Super Bowls. They finished in second place last year, barely made it into the playoffs, and then eeked past a Vikings team by 1 point thanks to an AP fumble and a Blair Walsh missed chip shot. So there’s that.

Wow Cardinal fan you must really be on your high horse. Now that you guys finally won the division after being dormant in the league for so many crappy seasons. Yes you guys won the division last year and are going to be pretty good. But you say try winning the division??? We’ve won the division more times the 9ers, Cards, and Rams, so pump the breaks on your hopeful superbowl run. You guys might want to try to win one first before you start puffing your chest.
