Fran Tarkenton to speak at Republican Convention

Donald Trump finally has his quarterback.

After the Republican National Convention tried and failed to get quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady and Tim Tebow to speak on Trump’s behalf, a quarterback has stepped up and accepted the offer: Vikings Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton.

“I have never been very political or a very active Republican, but as you know, my passion is for small business,” Tarkenton said in a statement. “I love to support, encourage and advocate for small businesses and entrepreneurs across America. They – I should say we – are the lifeblood that drives and grows our American economy. And our voices need to be heard.”

Tarkenton will be Thursday night’s first speaker. Trump will make his speech at the end of Thursday night’s festivities.

  1. I don’t care one way or another about the Republican or Democratic conventions, but Tarkenton is actually a very articulate speaker. After his retirement, he was very good as a game analyst in the early ’80s when he periodically filled in for Don Meredith on MNF.

  2. Keep in mind that speaking at the convention does not make you a Trump supporter. Fran is going to have to do his best scrambling to present his message without saying nice things about Trump.

  3. At least the Vikings were relevant when he played for them the 2nd time. Hopefully he doesn’t get confused and say “Make the Vikings great again!”

  4. Never saw him play and only in highlight films, but I think Russell Wilson could learn a move or two from him on how to avoid pass rushers.

  5. He was a co-host of a TV show called ‘That’s Incredible’ so maybe he his selection is representative of someone in the RNC’s sardonic sense of humor.

  6. Good for him. Hillary is an incompetent criminal. The most corrupt presidential candidate in our history. And that’s saying something.

  7. He fits the demo of the typical republican. He’s an old white man, who’s afraid of a more diverse population.

My early days as a QB were modeled after Fran. That was 40+ years ago. He is not relevant today in football or politics.

Nobody else will speak, maybe he’s family.

  8. Good for him. Hillary is an incompetent criminal. The most corrupt presidential candidate in our history. And that’s saying something.

And somehow she is still a better choice than the alternative….that’s saying a lot.

  9. Tarkenton was a lousy player who lost 4 Super Bowls. That’s why he is perfect for the Republicans, who are losers like him.

If you hate America she is.

To which I reply, “Prove it.” She’s been under investigation for 25 years by republican witch hunters, but she’s never been charged with anything, never been arrested, and has been continually cleared of any wrongdoing by all parties involved. Even the FBI director admitted that he made a mistake abour her actions regarding the e-mails. You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about and are simply parroting republican talking points. Turn off Fox so-called News once in a while, get your information from some reputable news sources for a change, and join the reality-based community.

  12. He “loves small business”, so he’s going to speak at the nomination of a guy who has made his career about stepping on and squashing the small business solely to increase his fortune. Better start taking your Geritol again, Fran.

Oh really? What “mistake” (out of the 14 minute indictment before ending it with..no charges) did he admit to?

  14. Repubs have hated on Hillary for so long, and now their worst nightmare is about to come true. Ouch, that has got to hurt.

  15. “Turn off Fox so-called News once in a while, get your information from some reputable news sources for a change”

You mean like CNN (Clinton News Network)?
Fox is the only one network isn’t run by the left.

When the FBI Director was asked, one answer at a time, if Hillary’s under-oath answers matched the FBI evidence, he indicated she lied in nearly every case! Yet a lot of people don’t seem to care. What is happening to America?

Actually, he was a decent player who lost 3 Super Bowls – same difference, though.

Can you believe that this year will mark 40 seasons since the vikings have been in a Super Bowl? Talk about futility!

  17. Fran Tarkenton will be much more effective than Brady at speaking at the convention for these reasons: You either love or hate Tom Brady, and you either love or hate Donald Trump. We know Brady is already on board; Fran is just what he says…the non-political guy who is mad as can be. I can’t stand Trump either…but guess what, he’s better than Hillary for sure. I’d dig up Al Capone and put his rotten keester in the seat before supporting Hillary.

  18. I like guys that DIDN’T lose the Superbowl, OK? Who let this loser in here?
    – Donald Trump, if he weren’t trying to shake off the stench of Chachi

  19. I don’t think its fair to assign all 3 Superbowl losses to Fran, he had 52 other Vikings helping him lose. Plus a head coach who lost 4 Superbowls, spread the wealth around on these epic choke jobs.

  20. Tarkenton is a shady businessman, so he’ll fit right in with Trump.

  21. Does Tarkenton support all of the small businesses that were decimated by Trump’s FOUR bankruptcies ?

  22. At least he had the ability to play pro football, play in a few super bowls, and become a successful businessman after football. Can’t say that about the many uneducated haters that commented about Fran, and yes, I’m sure the majority is that foul odor of a state to the east of Minny!

  23. I take it that doing infomercials doesn’t pay the bills anymore. As I recall, Tarkenton made a nice yes-man who provided deeply-moving testimonials for Tony Robbins.

  24. Say what you will about Fran. Another QB from that era won a couple of SBs but he would not be a good speaker as he doesn’t even know what century this is.

The director of the FBI did not clear her of wrongdoing. You should have listened to everything he said before “no charges”. Let’s pretend we don’t know for a fact that she sent and received classified information on a non-government system which is illegal. We know she did not have a .gov account as required, so HOW did she send and receive classified info during her four years in charge of the state department? Eh?

As opposed to the small businesses decimated by government policies and the businesses who fled the country because of tyhem?

  27. Boy some of you are so mad at Fran and Trump. It’s almost like they let 4 American heroes die in a foreign country, made up a lie about it, then then tell that lie to the American people and to their families face.

  28. What has any Republican since Eisenhower done for small businesses? Eisenhower was the last legitimately elected and the last legitimate Republican to hold the office.

  29. Fran is going on TV to promote himself. The economy always goes into a recession when republicans are in the white house and that kills small businesses. Fran won’t pass up this opportunity to get some free air time for his own business.

  30. Fran supports small business? The Republicans don’t. They are all about corporate dynasties. They squash mom & pop businesses like western settlers did the Native Americans.

Of course, Hillary is sold-out through her pals at Goldman-Sachs but I digress. Having Fran speak is desperation by The Donald who loves pro football but just can’t manage a franchise. The NFL turned him down.
Other than that, Fran Tarkenton just sounds crazier than a Georgia outhouse rat.

  31. Trump: ” We are going to win and win big. I’m a winner. I’ve always been a winner. I love winners. Tom Brady is a great friend of mine. Tom is a winner.

Now I would like to introduce Fran Tarkenton…”

  32. Dems hate business, unless it’s filling their pockets on the side.

I’m by no means in love with Trump, but I can’t even imagine how stupid a person would have to be to vote for Hillary Clinton. The perfect analogy for her is “the fox in the hen house”. Trump has his own money. She’s been on the government teat for 40 years now. Too many are now too. It’s running out for the future though. I’m old enough that it won’t matter as much to me, but younger people are only selling themselves out. Good luck suckers.

If facts are your friend, which I seriously doubt, It’s 7 bankruptcies out of over 500 companies created. But anyone that supports Hillary has a casual affiliation with the truth, so knock yourself out.

  34. Fran,
Hate to break the news to you, its the consumers that drive the American economy, not small businesses..

As opposed to letting a million people die in a foreign country, based on lies, perpetuating those lies to prolong a war over oil, while invading the wrong country and going after the wrong guy?

  36. Whoa, I had not heard about the fraud case with Fran. Disturbing. He cheated several retirees out of their life savings. Dude was my hero when I was growing up. Not anymore. Loser.

  37. Fran, the SB losses really hurt, but this breaks my heart (CTE has TRULY set in!!). Oh well, we all know this is time for the VIKINGS!!! SKOL!!! Go Hillary (you got this, girl!!)!!!
