LeGarrette Blount’s job may be in jeopardy in Patriots camp

Getty Images

Veteran running back LeGarrette Blount led the Patriots with 165 carries, 703 yards and six touchdowns last season. But that doesn’t make him a lock to make the roster this season.

That’s the word from Mike Reiss of ESPN, who reports that Blount will head into training camp with his job in jeopardy, and he’ll have to run hard in camp just to earn a spot on the 53-player roster.

The one-year contract Blount signed with the Patriots this year included a base salary of just $760,000, so he comes cheap. But if the Patriots aren’t satisfied with his work ethic in camp — or if he isn’t all the way back from the hip injury he suffered in December — New England could cut him and be out only the $100,000 signing bonus he already received.

If Blount doesn’t make the roster, the Patriots would likely have Dion Lewis as their starter and James White and Brandon Bolden backing him up.

  1. I Love being a Patriot…..
Every year I look forward to The Playoffs.
Every year I chuckle at these “lists” and “top tens” and get all chest out when Patriots dominate these rankings.

It is good to be a Patriot Fan

  2. Normally I former Steelers well when they move on to other teams. But if the Patriots give up on Blount like he gave up on the Steelers mid-season (and mid-game), I would smile a little. He’s still a good power back, but if Dion Lewis can stay healthy New England can do just fine without Blount.

  3. If Blount is still nursing his hip the pats can put him on PUP list & go with Brown….. I see Boldin at highest risk as Brown is a good special teams guy & excellent as a receiver out of backfield & not too shabby up the middle when needed….
I also see White in danger toundrafted rookie Foster….
Wonder if Gaffney makes cut too…. He REALLY needs to shine!!!!
    Go Pats!!!

  4. I don’t understand this article….He’s cheap and he is a BIG back….who else do they have that can do what he does. Mike is usually right on but I don’t get this.

  5. LeGarrette Blount’s contract alone would seem to indicate the only thing that could keep him off the roster is LeGarrette Blount. On another note, as dynamic as he is when he is on the field counting on Dion Lewis to make it through a 16 game season intact is a stretch. Dude has played 16 games in the past 4 years

  6. Blount has already lasted far longer than any of us thought he would. Really, didn’t you think he would be in prison by now? And he has lasted far longer than the average RB.

  7. I think it’s safe to re-write this article saying, “even if he does make the roster, Dion Lewis will likely be the starter”…

Or Blount will be a ‘starter’ who gets like 11 carries a game.

  8. This article makes mention of his work ethic in camp. That probably indicates why he’s going to be fighting for a roster spot. Maybe he’s hoping they will cut him so he can go somewhere else and have someone pay him more money. Dallas is stupid enough to do that.

Seeing how he quit on the Steelers so he would get cut says everything you need to know about this guy. I wouldn’t count on him for anything.

  9. .
The Patriots have Blount, Dion Lewis, James White, Donald Brown, Brandon Bolden, Tyler Gaffney, Joey Iosefa and undrafted free agent D.J. Foster on their roster. Lewis is projected to start if he can return from his torn ACL on time for Week 1.
    .

  10. The hip is really the issue. Obviously, don’t know where he is regarding the injury but hips tend to end careers ( Rosy Colvin). Don’t believe his work ethic is an issue, considered one of the better liked players on the team.

  11. Does it make anyone else just a little sick to read “be out only the $100,000”? Acting as if 100k is nothing. I’d love someone to just hand me 100k…

  12. Remember when the Patriots made the Steelers cut this guy, and then made sure that 31 other teams didn’t claim him off waivers?

    Oh yeah, that didn’t happen.

  13. He’s lucky to get an audition. The PAT’S are a very savvey organization. He should count his blessings that he has stuck on the roster thus far! I’m not a PAT Fan-But Keep Pounding Panthers and next man up. That sounds like the PAT’s mantra.

I agree. I think Blount is pretty mediocre (except vs the Colts) but RB might be THE biggest position of need NE didn’t address to my satisfaction (and by to my satisfaction, I mean at all) this offseason.

Would be puzzling if not only he wasn’t the “lead back” to start the season, let alone if he didn’t make the roster.

Was hoping they would take a flyer on Foster if nothing else personally. Oh well, hopefully Dion comes back 100 percent.

  15. All teams need backs that can run around people and backs that can run through people. Backs that do both like AP or the retired Marshawn are rare. We don’t have that guy.

There is a spot on the roster for Blount.

  16. Cut him, let another team sign him, and when Dion Lewis gets hurt, promise him a starting job and some additional incentives to throw a “tude” and get tossed off his new team team so that Belichick can re-sign him.

  17. He only ever has big games against the Colts. But to be fair, all Patriots backs seem to have massive games against the Colts.

  18. Can we give Scar a chance to tweak that O-line to the point where they can give Blount a decent chance at a downhill run? I love watching this dude truck fools late in the game when they’re tired…

  19. must be a slow news day

in new england, everyone has to make the team

nothing is given like with other mouthy teams who feel entitled

  20. I don’t understand Reiss on this one. Pats have had too many RB injury woes to cut a healthy & cheap veteran and just have 3 RBs in the 53 when they tend to play RB-by-committee anyway and they’ve no certainty how much of the load Dion can do. And so agree with kissbillsrings that even if it’s just that Blount isn’t quite over his hip they’ll list him for later in the season rather than cut him – unless there’s some other as-yet unstated reason.

That’s true for most players (just like on most teams) but Gronkowski, Edelman or Brady could come out in every training camp practice and go to the bathroom in the middle of the field before leaving, and they would make the team with Hoodie refusing to comment on it.

  23. I love you people calling NFL players “soft, glass, injury prone, etc” You couldn’t make it through a practice! Ya right Practice!
    Get a life

  24. Really, who can blame him for signing for the stupid money the Steelers gave him and then quitting on that idiot Tomlin? But to think that the quitting part was somehow planned and worked out in advance with NE is giving Blount far too much credit.

  25. Pretty thin with or without Blount. No guarantees with DLewis either. I was surprised they didn’t draft a back or d get in on AFoster. Guess they’re comfortable, but I’m not.

  26. When Blount was a Buc and Raheem was in his last year as head coach, it was reported locally here that Blount couldn’t get up and go practice; just couldn’t wake up and drive himself in. So Raheem made him hire a personal assistant to go by his apartment and wake him and drive him to practice. Schiano came on scene and didn’t go for that, just drafted Doug Martin. And with Raheem gone, within two years so was Blount and Schiano.

  27. I love being a Bronco.
Ever year we look forward to the playoffs.
I love beating the Patriots (twice last year). Tommy Tantrum is so much fun!
And the Lombardi 50 still shines bright.
    Life is grand.

  28. Correct me if I am wrong here. Isn’t that the case with most veterans? Especially when coming off a significant injury?

  29. ya, new England is done, Pete Carroll gifted that super bowl for them, and since then they’ve continued to be the beneficiaries of playing in a weak, weak division. they are lucky to make the playoffs every year, if they weren’t in the weakest division in football they would be 8-8 or 9-7.

and that rb unit is so weak it makes me laugh.

    prepare for mediocrity cheater fans

what does that say if you can’t make it at rb when two yard tom throws 90 percent of the plays!
    —————————————————————-
It says Tom Brady has a career win/loss record of 172-51. A winning percentage of .771, the best of all active and former QB’s. If 2 yard Tom gets results like that for my team I’ll take it. Let’s not even get started on divisional, conference and Super Bowl titles.

  31. Hes not really a goal line back as some would assume. He’s actually very finesse for someone thats roughly 250 lbs. He cant pick up a yard or two to save his life, so anyone saying his role as a goaline back is important, you are wrong. Yes it would be, if he was a power back. He is not. He’s just really big. I dont see him being cut, he’s easily the best runner between the tackles and guards out of the 4 you listed. Lewis is speed/hands guys White is also recieving back. Bolden plays special teams, and handles some 3rd down snaps. Blount is the go to guy on 1st and 2nd when the Pats are under center (which they will be without Brady for the 1st four weeks), so I dont see why he would be cut UNLESS Belichick found some UDFA or another RB on the market to do what Blount does for cheaper. Which is a possibility because Blount’s skill set is limited since he cant catch or block very well.

  32. Blount is not a 3rd down or short-yardage back. Give him the rock on 1st or 2nd down and he will gain 1,200 yards for less than $1M per season.

  35. I would love to see the Patriot release Blounts, then The Jets can able to sign him for 3rd string behind Forte and Powell.. Blount will be playing 2nd string going against Boston for sure.

Would love to see that happen… Will it? We’ll shall see =)

This coming from the team that had to cheat the cap in order to win their SBs.

  38. This article left out the biggest detail though. It has nothing to do with Lewis/White/Bolden. Donald Brown got a much larger guarantee than Blount, suggesting that the team has some expectations for him.

The combined wins of the AFC East three division losers since the realignment in 2002 is 118 wins, which is more that the North, West and south. Next closest division has 113. And in every season during that span the Pats were the division winner or had a record equal to the division winner.

In fact in one year (I believe it was 2009) the Bills were 0-6 against East opponent but 7-1 against all other AFC opponents.

Just because the Pats have been consistently good, doesn’the mean the rest of the East has been consistently bad.

  40. “cannot wait to demolish denver in cheatos stadium at cap cheat imvesco high field”

LOL, how did that work out for you twice last year?
    Denver D will demolish Tommy….again.

  41. NE hasn’t actually been “caught” doing anything. So, the next time will be the first time. But, you already knew that.

  42. As much as I respect Mike Reiss, I think he’s off base here. Blount is the only running back the Patriots have who is not a pure finesse runner. At $760K, Blount is a bargain and productive. He understands that a healthy Dion Lewis is the man back there, but there is a big role for Blount.

  43. It may be in jeopardy if he punches a teammate like he did when he was with the Titans

    ==================

As opposed to the AFCN that the Pats in the Belichick/Brady era hold an .800 win % against in spite of only playing that division’s winner in 2 of every 3 years? The AFCE is the winningest division in football over the last 10 years. NE lost 2 division games out of 6 and 2 non division games out of 10 in each of the last 3 years. Stop buying the lazy headline reader approach. It is divisional play that hurts the AFCE teams playoff chances. Brady is 8-3 against the Steelers, if Pitt played in the AFCE they would suffer the same fate as the Jests, Bills and fish. Hate away but try to get some facts in there when posting.

  47. The patriot coaching is dreading breaking the news to garrett leblunt that he is being cut out of fear of the sucker punch.

  48. What a head case you must be if as a 5-6 year veteran you’re signed to a salary just over the rookie minimum. Blunt has pulled more stunts than a Barnum and Bailey Circus. Lied to get from Pittsburgh to NE. Low character individual. I remember during the 2014 SB game end Blunt acting as if he’d done something to contribute to the win on that day…and he hadn’t. Not a reliable RB or player.

Well then, putting it like that, and having the best QB and head coach in all of football for 15 years, what’s the excuse for having 3 SB wins, and none in over 10 years until PC allows coordinator Bevell to call a nutty game ending play, even knowing Browner had practiced against that play for several years? Talk about under achievement – Hey, you can’t have it both ways. If NE fans are going to brag about being the best what’s with the 4-15 record in SB wins by a combined total of 13 points?

  50. Blount has lost a step and is no longer the true power back that he was in 2013-2014. Anyone who watched him last year knows that he just doesn’t have it anymore. He’s not explosive anymore, takes FOREVER to accelerate and hit the hole.

Their first mistake was brining Blount back, should’ve just let him walk.

The second bad mistake was not adding a RB via free agency or the draft. This years FA class of RB’s was LOADED with quality RB’s that could’ve been had on the cheap. The Pats did nothing.

I figured after ignoring the stacked FA class of RB’s they’d at least draft a RB (Dixon or Booker). They again did NOTHING.

Pats made great off season moves, but completely wiffed at addressing a glaring RB need.
