Odell Beckham: Josh Norman “so relevant” because of me

AP

When cornerback Josh Norman signed with the Redskins earlier this offseason, plenty of people noted that he would be scheduled to face the Giants and wide receiver Odell Beckham twice during the regular season.

Beckham and Norman had a memorable battle during last year’s Giants-Panthers game that featured taunting, pushing, shoving and a running blow to Norman’s head from Beckham that led to a one-game suspension for the Giants wideout. The ugliness between the players also led to several flags during the game and influenced the league’s push to eject players with two unsportsmanlike penalties in the same game.

Beckham passed on commenting on Norman’s arrival in the NFC East when Norman signed, but the season is getting closer and he’s ramping things up on the verbal front. In an interview for the August 2016 edition of GQ, Beckham shared his opinion that Norman signing with the Redskins is “for sure” about his presence in the division.

“It goes back to what I was saying,” Beckham said. “If I wasn’t playing him twice a year, maybe people wouldn’t bring it up as much. But now it’ll be a lot more media attention for him, attention that I don’t really look for, attention that I don’t need. The reason he’s become so relevant is because of me.”

Beckham also discussed living in Drake’s house and rumors of a romantic fling with Khloe Kardashian while modeling clothes for the magazine, so it seems he’s doing just fine in the attention department.

Norman was well on his way to earning a big contract this offseason before he and Beckham went WWE on each other during last year’s game, but such trifles rarely get in the way of a good round of trash talking. There’s a good chance we’ll see some more before the players renew acquaintances on September 25.

  1. I don’t know about you but I’m getting tired of Beckham making everything about him.

I guess he’s on the Giants for having a Giant Ego

  2. I wish some of these players would learn that their performance on the field will do all of the talking that they need.

    Go Blue

  3. “If I wasn’t playing him twice a year, maybe people wouldn’t bring it up as much. But now it’ll be a lot more media attention for him, attention that I don’t really look for…”

Well, don’t spear him in the head this season, and he won’t get that attention that you don’t look for…

  4. Norman owned Odell in that game and those cheap shots he threw in frustration made him look mentally soft.

Odell sure sounds he has a big ego for a guy who hasn’t won anything yet.

  5. I’m an LSU alum/fan who is pretty sick of Odell Beckman and his look-at-me hair, shoes and mouth. Just play ball and be quiet. Norman is pretty damn good.

  6. And the only reason you’re relevant is because you made a lucky meaningless catch in a loss to a division rival in another irrelevant Giants seaaon. Every game they show your highlites of your pre-game practicing one-handed catches. So cool! The only reason your talked about is because you’re “In” right now. But just like any other Fad, you’ll be forgotten about in a season or two, while you fight for a roster spot on some crap team like the 49ers.

  7. He actually made his name when he intercepted a pass from Luke McCown in the end zone on the last play of the game to beat the Saints. Then the game against Beckham happened and then he blew up. As a Saints fan, I’ve seen him play a good bit over the last few seasons and my opinion is that he’s a system CB. He excels in a 2-Deep zone, and is average in man-coverage. He’s a darn good zone CB, but we’ll really see what he’s worth this season when he doesn’t have that LB corps. Having Kuechly and Davis on the second level is huge, and that value for a CB can’t be understated. That’s a huge hit for Carolina, regardless if they want to believe it or not. He’s a system CB, but there’s a reason why he was All-Pro and none of the others in that secondary came close.

  8. To all you Norman lovers, just read:

“Critics have credited Carolina’s defensive system as the root of his success. Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones and Denver Broncos wide receiver Damaryius Thomas have both called attention to the safety help he gets over the top. Cosell noted in his analysis that Norman did not play much man coverage against Beckham.”

Norman is good, but he is no shut-down corner.

    Who actually likes ODB?

    =-=-=-=-=-=

Depends; are we talking about the Giants receiver, or the one-man army, who’s never been tooken out and who keeps MCs lookin’ out?

  10. Beckham is a bozo. He is clueless, and exactly how many Super Bowls has he won? Answer: none.
His team is 12 and 20 over the last two years, so with all his me-me antics, he’s still just a loser.
Make sure they give you a sedative before each game this year Odell, so you don’t go crazy again.

  11. OBJ is likely going to Canton. The Giants arent losing because he is their WR1. Yeah, most of us Giants fans wish he would stay out of the spotlight and not talk to the media….but if that is what comes with what he does on the field, then I’ll deal with it (as the fan of any other NFL team would).

The greatest player I ever saw was Lawrence Taylor….and he would have won nothing if he didnt have quality team mates. The idea that OBJ’s Giant teams not having won anything is a reflection on his talent is a grammar-school level argument….and a bad one even at that level.

  12. I was casually checking ODB game stats last yr ( i ignored the previous yr for argument purposes), i know he is a very good one , with the exception of a couple of Dallas games and Buffalo, he was lights out in the other ones. To say that he is only relevant because of that one catch is ludicrous at best. Does he like the spotlight sure, but in case you have been paying attention most of these players do and since he is a star extra attention gets paid to him.

  13. ODB was targeted 9 times in that game, caught 7 and had a TD. Burned Norman bad for what would have been the easiest touchdown of his career from a perfectly thrown pass. All analysts that have studied the tape have said Norman just can’t cover Odell man on man.

That’s not to say that ODB shouldn’t learn to keep his mouth shut. As Coach Coughlin said, talk is cheap, play the game.

  14. Josh Norman and Patrick Peterson are the most overrated corners. Chris harris is far better and so is Sherman. Harris is the best cover corner and Sherman is a pick machine and single-handedly (litarally) bounced the niners and helped win a super bowl. Norman and Peterson are average and Peterson gets burnt weekly and is afraid to tackle. Watch any cardinals game and Peterson get burnt and runs from tackles. I see it every game.

  15. Obviously Odell Beckham Jr’s favorite person in the whole world is Odell Beckham Jr.

Is it because Manning is their QB? Or that they have a new coach?

  17. Odell is lucky he will be able to rely on his college degree when he retires and then he can stop all the media attention.

  18. Take the gloves off, and let’s see how many spectacular catches he has. Or any receiver.

  19. Sherman also plays one side only. BUT Sherman is good, no denying.

You won’t see many shut-down corners in the league (Reevis in his prime) because of the rules that essentially prevents a CB from doing his job.

But come on that’s not fair – that’s true for all WR in the league. Name one WR that does not have duct-tape gloves and I’ll show you a WR that’s about to get cut.

Manning has had the two best seasons of his career in pass completion and interceptions, and quietly was one of the most effective QB in the league last year. The Giants lost 6 (count ’em 6) games in the last 2 mins last year. This is a team that could have been 12-4.

Giants are loosing because they don’t have depth on the roster – because their GM, Jerry Reese, is a terrible talent evaluator and has gutted the roster with horrible draft picks between 2007 and 2012. Only in the last couple of years have the Giants start to unbury from the hole their in. It will be a few years before the Giants are good again…..sigh.

Your stuff is usually better any chance your team’s 2 SB losses to Big Blue the cause of that post?

Rushing things a bit, aren’t you? And if what he does on the field includes going nuts, I don’t want any part of it.

  26. He better soak up all the attention he can get from the media, because he won’t be getting ANY attention from his qb when he’s lined up opposite Norman.

    Hail

Nope. I’m not a Patriots fan, though I do admire the organization.

  28. You guys are funny. I appreciate reading most of these comments. Eli Manning is money and I think the Giants are going to be very good this season. Beckham has tremendous ability but he’s just not very likable. And anyone who thinks Eli sucks doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Not a Giants fan btw but I’ll take Eli in a big game all day long.

Obviously I am a Giants guy, however I have been a huge BB guy going back to his days here. That ’90 SB defensive game plan was brilliant and I was hoping for him when they let Reeves go. Having left out your allegiance it is hard to understand your Giants antipathy and weak comment though

    Well played sir !!!

  31. That carolina game also put Beckham on the spot light for other DBs, the guy HATES when you put his hands on him. Every DB this year is going to jam him like crazy to throw him off his rhythm and piss him off. Granted he is one of the hardest WR in the league to cover, but throw him off his game mentally and you see what he will do, which is lose his composure completely.

  32. These 2 little jotitos need to just elope and live happily ever after on their own little island in paradise and leave the NFL to the real men.

  33. As a Packers fan, I’m unbiased, but I can’t believe Beckham was suspended for the Giants’ game against the Vikings last year. What was he supposed to do? Lay down and allow Norman to assault him?

  34. So all of you would not want ODB on the field for the team they like?

Go ahead and lie you would give a lung to have him on your team

So you keep hating and he will keep catching

Reading comprehension isn’t taught anymore apparently. He specially said “Or any reciever”. Try to keep up.

  36. why are some of the top wide receivers always so desperate for attention? odell might want to watch what happened with Owens when he continued to make himself bigger then the team.. he’s a great player but after a few years it gets tiring

I did say or any receiver. I should of said or any other receivers in the league.

  38. Wait, so the guy who made this article made their fighting on the field comparison with WWE? Are you saying they were pretending to fight, become Diva’s, and talking smack for money? I would’ve referenced UFC, but hey, that’s why they get paid all the big bucks

  39. Norman was in his head sure but it’s not like he stopped him on the field at all. He was a first play drop away from going 8/150/2 tds so back it down a notch haters.

  40. Norman was doing pretty well for himself before the Giants game. Defensive strategy or not he had established himself as one of the better corner backs in the league.

ODB’s childish, unprofessional behavior may have been a springboard to more notoriety but that is like saying Kermit Washington made Rudy Tomjonavich famous, I guess there is a shred of truth to the statement but if doing something stupid to someone makes he and you more famous, I would be trying to distance myself from that not rehashing the incident.

ODB should concentrate on being a better person and player, including behavior, and let the future take care of the past.

  41. There’s only been one shut down corner in the history of this league and that was D. Sanders. Granted he couldn’t tackle but shut down receivers he could. Norman is a great player….Kanye Beckham is a cry baby looking for attention. HTTR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. “OBJ is likely going to Canton.”

So am I. Every March, for a fantasy baseball auction. ODB may go to Canton, but the only way he’s getting into the Hall is if he buys a ticket.
