Jaguars kick tires on Greg Hardy

Ray Rice wants back in to the NFL, but his skills aren’t sufficiently unique. Greg Hardy’s apparently still are.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, free-agent defensive end Greg Hardy spent the last two days visiting with and working out for the Jaguars.

Hardy, who spent last season with the Cowboys, has become a notorious figure in league circles, due to his May 2014 domestic violence incident and ensuing suspension and some of his behavior during his only season in Dallas. His efforts to find new employment since becoming a free agent in March had, to date, been unsuccessful.

The Jaguars have been compiling talented players on both sides of the ball, and the football operation realizes that time is running short to become a true contender. With Hardy in the rotation at pass rusher in a division with quarterbacks like Andrew Luck, Marcus Mariota, and Brock Osweiler, the Jacksonville defense could be improved.

The move isn’t without P.R. risk, and the reaction locally and nationally to the news of the flirtation with Hardy could influence whether he’s signed. Is the criticism is loud and widespread, they may back away. If the news comes and goes without a major fracas or brouhaha, maybe they’ll roll the dice.

But if the goal is to win games and if coach Gus Bradley believes he can manage Hardy and if the organization is willing to take the heat for giving Hardy his latest second chance, Hardy could be getting a chance to earn a roster spot during training camp and the preseason.

  1. jags are finally on the upswing after years of losing and they want to bring this jamoke in? instead of kicking the tires on this guy they should kick his ass out the door like every other woman beater.

  2. Nothing to lose. Everything to gain.

I hope my Jags punch some teams in the eyeball this year.

  3. The NFL being the NFL. Nothing will ever change and fans will be knocking each other over to give the league as much money as possible.

  4. they’ll sign him then Jerrah will call up offering two first round picks for him

  5. This guy is a ticking time bomb. He’s not worth the the headache IMO. Jags will be a better team, it’s not worth dealing with this guy when they’re losing. I believe in 2nd chances. Hardy proved he hasn’t changed. Men like Hardy don’t change.

  6. I think he hurts the locker room too much for the slight upgrade at defensive end. He’s not going to start over Fowler which only leaves Odrick’s spot at the strong side. I’d rather see them go with their backups of Ngakoue and Alualu than to influence this young locker room with Hardy. This reminds me of Andre Rison with the 96 Jags, who got cut mid season.

  7. Ray Rice just happened to get caught on camera, that’s the only reason he’s still unemployed and turds like Hardy keep getting signed. It’s a shame to see Rice’s career destroyed over a drunken fight with his equally drunk fiance, Rice was always a classy guy devoting a lot of time and money to charity ever since he joined the league.

  8. Sign the guy with an incentive based contract for 1 year. If he messes up, then he forfeit his contract and he will earn nothing. We are trying to win and the fans have suffered long enough.

Maybe he’ll just throw some teams onto a pile of guns.

  10. How do you destroy your team’s image and alienate 99% of your fan base? Consider signing Greg Hardy. I can’t believe they are even considering signing this cancer. Way to go Jags. Not only are you laughed at for sucking for the last decade, now you can get laughed at for being the only team still interested in Greg Hardy. That makes you worse than the Cowboys. That says a lot.

  11. If Hardy stays quiet and they win some games, they’ll be fine.

This is 2016 and the US has zero attention span. The media will try to rehash it for clicks but the general sports fan won’t care one bit as long as he doesn’t make it worse.

Rice punched out his girlfriend and dragged her unconscious from an elevator. He should be in prison for what he did. Spare me the empathy….they guy is a punk.

  13. The only reason the Jags should be brining this guy in is to kick something else of his.
