Dennis Green’s success with any quarterback may be his greatest legacy

After news broke that longtime NFL coach Dennis Green had died at the age of 67, Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway paid tribute to Green.

“My heart and prayers go out to Dennis Green and his family. Had the pleasure of playing for Dennis at Stanford for 2 years. Great Coach!” Elway wrote on Twitter.

But the single most impressive accomplishment of Green’s career may be that he didn’t need a great quarterback like Elway. In fact, Green could take just about any quarterback, plug him into Green’s offense, and get to the playoffs. Green took the Vikings to the playoffs eight times in his 11 seasons as head coach, in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000. Just take a look at the quarterbacks Green had in those seasons:

1992: The Vikings went 8-4 with Rich Gannon as their starter and 3-1 with Sean Salisbury as their starter. Although Gannon would later become a very good quarterback with the Raiders, he was viewed at the time as a nobody — and Salisbury was viewed as worse. And yet Green rode them to the playoffs in his first season as head coach.

1993: Jim McMahon was viewed as old and washed up and just a backup at that point in his career, but Green brought him to Minnesota and rode him to the playoffs.

1994: Warren Moon is a Hall of Fame quarterback, but he was seen as way past his prime when the Vikings acquired him in a trade with the Houston Oilers. And yet with Moon as the starter, the Vikings made the playoffs again.

1996: Moon was injured at the start of the season, so Brad Johnson — who had never started a game in a four-year NFL career up to that point — stepped in and led the Vikings to a 4-0 start. Moon would eventually return, he and Johnson would flip-flop on the depth chart, and it would ultimately be Johnson who led the Vikings to the playoffs.

1997: Johnson shared the job with Randall Cunningham, who had been viewed as so far past his prime that he wasn’t even in the league the year before. Again, Green led the Vikings to the playoffs.

1998: With Cunningham supplanting Johnson as the starter, the Vikings had their best season of the Green era, going 15-1 and falling in the NFC Championship Game.

1999: Green benched Cunningham for Jeff George, another past-his-prime quarterback, and once again found a winning touch, as the Vikings went 8-2 in George’s 10 starts and made the playoffs again.

2000: Green started Daunte Culpepper and saw him put together an incredible season, with 3,937 passing yards, 33 passing touchdowns, 470 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. The Vikings lost the NFC Championship Game, which would be the last playoff game Green coached.

That revolving door of quarterbacks is worth repeating: Rich Gannon, Sean Salisbury, Jim McMahon, Warren Moon, Brad Johnson, Randall Cunningham, Jeff George and Daunte Culpepper. Green never had one franchise quarterback he could count on year after year. Instead, Green found a new quarterback year after year. And he kept finding ways to win. That was a great piece of coaching.

  1. correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he also make Matt Leinhart look like the future starter he was supposed to be before Whizenhunt came in?

  2. What I also noticed during Denny Green’s career was that although he had come up as an assistant with the ‘West Coast Offense’ (as part of Bill Walsh’s staff), as a HC he largely deviated from that in favor of the deep passing game if that was more the strength/skill-set of his starting QB at a point in time.

So he was more flexible than a lot of other HCs with WCO backgrounds which I think explains his success with a multitude of QBs.

  3. 1999: Green benched Cunningham for Jeff George, another past-his-prime quarterback

I think Florio would disagree that Jeff George was past his prime… I recall that up until a few years back Florio used to lobby for Jeff George to get another shot on an annual basis. Also used to do the same thing with Cullpepper.

  4. Wait a minute, you’re trying to argue that Dennis Green didnt have squat for QBs, then you list off a guy who went on to become NFL MVP (Gannon), another guy who had won a Super Bowl (Jim McMahon), then a Hall of Famer (Warren Moon) and then somebody who eventually won a Super bowl and became a multi-year Pro Bowler (Brad Johnson), a former All-Pro, and two-time NFL MVP (Randall Cunningham) the First overall pick in the 1990 Draft (Jeff George) and finally a top 15 pick and Pro Bowler (Culpepper).. While Green may have never had the same QB he could count on year after year, He definitely didnt have scrubs.

  5. raider, your point has some validity to it, but most those QB’s were in the twilight of their career. Gannon and Johnson were similar in the fact they didn’t wow you with stats, but seemed to get the job done, if either of those two were truly franchise types then they would have only played for one team.

  6. Wow trippy and epic article.. Never knew about Coach Green during Viking much in past days, and it was very interesting to read. It seems that he was a really great coach with very good eye sights; knowing which QBs will be up.

    RIP Dennis Green.

Religionisforidiots – Bill and Tom are the GOAT – deal with it
    ————————————-

Belichek was a loser until he paired up with Brady. His system fit Brady’s skills, five yard passes, with receivers having the ability to get YAC. To compare his coaching abilities with Green’s is apples and oranges. Give him a revolving door of qbs like Green had, with such a variable set of skills, and then compare them as the GOAT.

I would say that John Fox is a better qb coach than Belichek: He took Tebow to the playoffs and Belichek could not even coach him up to the practice squad.

  8. Willycents – Oh you’re talking coaching qb’s – I was mainly responding to the ridiculous comment made earlier and constant excuse people use about the Pats cheating…

  9. He is who we thought he was. That’s why he was on this damn earth! And if God wants to take him to heaven, then take him to heaven! But Dennis is who we thought he was, and God let him Rest in Peace.

(I don’t believe in god, but it was the only way I could think of to turn that line to a positive one. Condolences to the Green family)

  10. Green was a great HC , In Arizona he was the one that built AZs 08 Super Bowl Team not Whiz, Green is the one who went out and signed future Hall of Fame QB Kurt Warner, and Green drafted multiple Elite n Future Hall of Famers in AZ ( as well as MIN) like drafting Elite WR who is one of the best ever & definite 1st ballot hall of famer in Elite WR Larry Fitzgerald who is still one of the NFLs top elite WRs ( Pro Football Focus ranked him 4th best WR n NFL last uear), he also drafted long time Elite WR Anquan Boldin who has a chance at the Hall of Fame but no sure thing, He drafted multiple time Pro-Bowler & All-Pro 3-4 DE Darnell Dockerr, drafted longtime Elite 3-4 DE Antonio Smith who was a beast in his prime, drafted longtime Elite top 5 All-Pro/Pro Bowl ILB Karlos Dansby, Drafted Elite Pro-Bowl/All-Pro Safety Antrel Rolle, I mean I could go on and on and on…..

Coach Green was the first key building block on the journey to turning the Arizona Cardinals around to one of the NFLs Elite Winning Franchises that is now a major destination for free agents. And Green also oversaw the opening of the new state of the art stadium which also helped into turning the Cardinals around into a winning culture, its one of the top 5 Nicest Stadiums in the NFL. Opened in 06, in 2015 AZ spent 200 million dollars in upgrades to keep the stadium a state of the art stadium w/ a new massive jumbotron 2nd biggest n NFL & added free Wifi along with the ability to order food/drinks right from your seat along with many other cool high tech abilities.

Right after the Stadium was opened the biggest addition in turning AZ into an Elite winning franchise was the Cardinals owners son Michael Bidwill taking over the team. Bidwill understands winning teams make more money but Is a die hard fan who wont rest until he brings and AZ wins a few Super Bowl Titles.

Since Mike Bidwill took over running the team AZ is one of the MOST WINNINGEST Teams in the NFL ranking 7th of the 32 teams with the 7th most wins in the league since 20007.

Since Head Coach Bruce Arians ( who is one of the top 3 best HCs n football w/ 2 AP Coach of the Year awards n last 4yrs to Prove it) and GM Steve Keim ( who is one of the NFLs best top 3-5 GMs n 2014 Executive/GM of the year, he has hit on 90% of his picks since 2013 as well) were hired in 2013 taking over Power of the Team, they have built an NFC PowerHouse that is arguably the best team in the NFC n NFL.
Over the last 3 years since 2013 Arizona is one of the top 3 most winningest teams in the NFL & their Elite top 5 QB Carson Palmer who ranked as Pro FOOTBALL Focus’s #1 QB Last Season is the most winningest QB in the NFL since 2013!!!!

Arizona is now an Elite Franchise and NFC Powerhouse that is one of the top 3 best teams in the NFL & Now a franchise that now has a winning Culture & Excellent HC D. Green was the first key building block to turning the Cardinals around & taking them out of exile & for that as a die hard Cardinals fan I will be forever greatful !!!!! Rest in Peace Coach , I’m sure your coaching games in Heaven Now.

  11. Moon was not seen as over the hill when he was acquired by the Vikings. He had thrown for almost 3,500 yards in 1993 at a time when that was still a lot of passing yards. And the Oilers had been the No. 2 seed with him in their run-and-shoot offense. If anything, Moon was seen as a Vikings upgrade over an McMahon.

  12. I pointed this out yesterday. Very, very underrated coach. If he would have been able to see what he did through in Arizona, as most of the roots of the franchise’s first Super Bowl run had his fingerprints all over it, and had he broke through with that ’98 team, I think he would have been a shoe in Hall of Fame coach. He was that good.

  13. Having Cris Carter, Gary Zimmerman, Randall McDaniel, and Kirk Lowdermilk didn’t hurt either. Denny would coach to the QBs strengths. Zimmer reminds me a lot of Denny’s style only on the defensive side. But the way he has his players back and doesn’t take any crap from the media is just like Denny.

  14. Sorry joko – Lombardi and Starr are the GOAT, and you’ll have to deal with that.

  15. if the obsession people have with the pats needs to be more evident, look at the first post above.

the jealousy is so strong, it has destroyed people’s lives.

    just frozen them in time

    WOW

  16. For all of you Belichick bashers, just remember, Belichick won 11 games with Matt Cassel as his starting quarterback in 2008. Matt Cassel!!

    WOW

It could be argued that pats fans are the ones destroyed. Renting billboards, renting plane banners, flailing and kicking like a 2 yr old demanding that the SCOTUS step in…. over a 4 game suspension. All the while parroting IGL, IGL, SQUAWK! Totally ignorant of the real legal issue being considered. Sue for defamation you squak. Sue for his civil rights you scream. And….. you lost. Mommy didn’t buy you a bag of Sweet Tarts. Boycott the NFL. Don’t buy a jersey. Tune out the game. That’ll show thows greedy billionaire owners. Ruin them financially it will. Bummer.

  18. This also proves that we had better quarterback depth all over the NFL in the 90s.

  19. His name would come up each time Al Davis fired a head coach, but Al never hired him. I’m not really sure if Dennis could have turned the franchise around, but with 13 years of non-winning seasons since Raiders lost to the Bucs in SB, I think Dennis would more than likely gotten the Raiders to win more than 8 games in a season the way he did with the Vikings with serviceable quarterbacks.

Unlike belicheat, didn’t need to film. Didn’t need to deflate footballs.

So….you’re saying Green’s teams went into the classroom and didn’t watch any game tape? Oh and deflating the balls? Doesn’t tend to happen when you play at least 8 games a year in a DOME. Try harder.

Bill Belichick took the Cleveland Browns to the playoffs by benching Bernie Kosar and starting Vinnie Testaverde. He also went 11-5 with the Patriots when Matt Cassel was starter. Try harder.

Tebow wasn’t ELIGIBLE for the practice squad…and you may have noticed he didn’t make any OTHER team since then either.

  23. A great take on Green!

My only complaint is the lack of accolades surrounding that 1998 Vikings offense that was record-setting and one of the most prolific in NFL history.

  24. Green only coached 10 seasons in Minnesota, not 11. Including the year before he arrived, the Vikings never had a losing season from 1991 – 2000. The bouncing up and down each season has been very frustrating for those of us who got used to winning so consistently when Green was here. Looks like we’re going to get back to that consistency now that Zimmer is here.

  25. So true. And thanks by the way for the depressing reminder that my team hasn’t had a franchise QB since Francis Damn Tarkenton.

  26. When considering Green’s legacy, it’s worth remembering that he was the 49ers receivers coach for Jerry Rice’s second, third and fourth seasons in the league.

  27. As a Vikes fan i saw what Green was able to do with these QBs.
In most cases he took an experienced Vet that was able to read defenses and adjust.
This was key in nearly all those listed due to the fact that they always usually prospered in their first and sometimes only year as a Starter.
In most cases the following year when Defenses had sufficent film of the QB in Denny’s System they could be figured out.
Drop-off in Stats and or Injury would occur.

That said, anyone who watched would probably agree. Jim McMahon’s performance in the Play Offs was one of the most Bad Ass a man can do. Rivaled only by Farve in 2009. Those are two tough Men!

  28. Let’s not forget the famous maxim of Dennis Green: “We were who they thought we were!” Well, he was what I thought he was for sure. Dennis Green is a great guy. RIP

  29. Just think about how having a new QB every season creates such turmoil for a team, and yet Green still got the Vikes to the playoffs all of those years.

The Pat’s think of themselves as the GOAT, and yet they’ve experience zero QB adversity except the one season Brady was out. And then the Pat’s tanked. So much for GOAT.

RIP Denny Green! You were the man!

  30. That Vikings offense with Pepper and Moss was terrifying. The playoff loss in Green’s final year was totally a defensive collapse. As HC he was rightly held responsible for that debacle but it had nothing to do with his team’s talent or execution on offense.

    “Tanked”

They went 11-5 and missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker
So much for you knowing what you’re talking about.

  32. 1998: With Cunningham supplanting Johnson as the starter, the Vikings had their best season of the Green era, going 15-1 and falling in the NFC Championship Game.
    ###################################

Brad Johnson started the year 1-0 and threw two touchdowns to Randy Moss. Moss’s first two catches as a pro went for scores. Then in week two at the St. Louis Rams Johnson got hit high and low and fractured his leg. That set up Cunningham, as he never looked back in that NFL scoring record year of 98′. The Vikes were now 2-0, I know this because I was at both of the games.
So Cunningham didn’t supplaint Johnson, he got the job because of injury to the #1 QB that was Johnson.
I remember in the NFC championship game that many fans were growing restless as Cunningham was playing an average game at best. The Vikings settled for several FG’s early and the fans were calling for Denny to put a healthy Johnson in for a spark.

  33. Pretty sure coach Green was in the NFC north, how hard was it to beat up on the Lions, Packers and Bears?
Also, please don’t call Arizona an elite franchise yet, they haven’t won Jack.

  34. “And that’s why we took the damn field!”

    I love that line

Denny took the field each and every morning and simply kicked tail

Now he’s taking the field up there

    Thanks Coach!
