Tom Brady can’t play catch with teammates while suspended

Getty Images

We may see a rusty Tom Brady in Week Five.

Brady is suspended for the first four games of the season over Deflategate, so he’s scheduled to make his regular season debut in Week Five against the Browns. Quarterbacks regularly miss time with injuries and then return to the field without any problems, but those quarterbacks have usually been working with their teammates at practice and participating in team meetings. Brady’s case will be different.

Not only is Brady not allowed to go to practices or team meetings during the four weeks when he’s suspended, but he’s not even allowed to have contact with coaches, or have a teammate over to his house to play catch.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told the Boston Herald that if Brady wanted Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Rob Gronkowski or any other Patriot to come over to his house and help him stay sharp, the NFL would prohibit it. Brady can’t “engage in any team football-related activities or discussions with teammates, even if away from the club facility.”

Would the NFL really be able to enforce a prohibition of “any team football-related activities or discussion?” Maybe not, but at this point Brady would be wise not to do anything that would result in a lengthy investigation. The last one didn’t go well for Brady.

  1. Everyone knows you can’t practice with your team while suspended.
But, Bill wants to know why Brady can’t play “catch” with his ends, while his defensive backs play tag with the ends, and the line men play tug of war using only their shirts? And, he thinks this would be fun to watch.

  2. Brady can “play catch” with any free agents or retired NFL players (e.g. Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Deion Branch, etc.).

Brady is not going to have a difficult time finding good athletes to train with during his suspension, whether they be former NFL players, NFL free agents, or high quality Division 1 college talent.

It is not as good as working with one’s teammates, but Brady should be plenty sharp when the Pats are in the AFC Championship game again in January 2017.

  3. Its a shame that anything associated with his name will have an asterdick next to it.

  4. If any of the other AFC East teams are unable to win the division this year, they should all three of them apply for asylum in the AFC South.

  5. Doesn’t matter what he does. All it needs is for the Jets, Colts or Ravens to accuse him of talking to team mates during the 4 game suspension and he’ll get punished further.

Clear by now that actual solid proof of wrongdoing is not legally required in order to punish any member of the Patriots organisation.

Mere insinuation is sufficient burden of proof for random “justice” to be executed.

    Wonderful.

  6. Unless the team rewrites all the pass-plays while he’s out, I doubt 4 weeks away from his longtime targets will have much impact apart from Brady being a little rusty his first week back.

Meanwhile, still waiting for the two actual improper ball-inflation schemes – where Aaron Rodgers admitted in 2015 to long-term rule-breaking, and where the Colts at the Jan 2015 AFCCG were illegally carrying and using needles – to be investigated by a quick-acting league that is so super-keen on fairness and integrity.

  7. This is nothing more then a bs article on information we already know. We all know hes suspended and cant have football related activities. I am sick and tired of people making up stuff just to write about this team. I am glad hes suspended because when we win the divison again and go deep into the playoffs again I cant wait to hear the excuses……GAME ON NFL………..

  8. I love being a Patriot.

20plus years of NFL dominance in the face of these petty torments is truly amazing.

  9. It’s true he will be rusty come Week Five; but I gotta believe there’s a high percentage of teams that would gladly take that over their own Week One starting QB…

  10. What if while at Home, he wants to watch past games vs. upcoming opponents…while playing with his properly inflated balls?

  11. I wouldn’t put it past Brady or the Patriots to try and circumvent these rules.
I hope the league pays attention to this and warns him and investigates any infractions.

  12. Yeah, and if there’s one thing we know about Brady and the Patriots, it’s that they’ll definitely respect these rules and won’t try to get around them at all…

  13. Of course that’s the case. How else will Goodell be able to ensure to his little puppet owners that parity has been guaranteed.
Goodell is disgusting. And anyone football fan who believes this process was fair and in any way justified…….well it’s Sunday morning, I can’t go there.

  14. Hence the word “suspension”. ALL activity with the team is suspended. He’ll probably look OK in week 5 but not fully synched up with his new WR’s and TE. It might not show since they’ll be playing the Browns.

  15. I can’t even believe the suspension held. I’m a die-hard REDSKINS fan, but I also love the Patriots. The air pressure of the footballs doesn’t matter in a 45-7 loss.

  16. Now that little Tommy is finally being held accountable for his actions he should be treated like every other suspended player…no better no worse!!!

  17. So every Monday the Patriots will release a marginal player, who will no longer be Brady’s teammate, and that player will go over to Brady’s house and fill him in on what he needs to know, then re-sign with the Patriots on Wednesday. It’s the Patriot Way.

  18. Brady’s contact with teammates will be the same as Goodell’s contact with the truth.

  19. So all this for parity in the afc east. What happens when it backfires and the Pat’s win the division and get to the SB? All the money to buy parity will be for nothing.

You must be thinking about Tom Brady’s weather controlling station, which sits on the top of Mount Washington. The secret weather controlling station which the Patriot haters must be convinced exists that allowed Tom Brady to set the outdoor temperature in Foxboro MA at 49 degrees on January 18, 2015 when The Patriots played The Colts.

Patriot haters must also believe that Tom Brady scheduled rain that day. This is the only possible explanation that doesn’t contradict proven science while also blaming Tom Brady for deflating footballs.

Agreed. But it won’t happen because it’s NOT NE!
As stated in the rule book the only person who can gauge the football that’s in play is the REFEREE.
This was a direct plan by the NFL/Goodell to get the Patriots…Remember those infamous words by Mike Kensil at halftime to the NE equipment manager…”We’ve got you, you guys are “f !” Then it turned out as we’ve all seen that the NFL/Goodell knew they were wrong, so the doubled down on stupid!

    ———————

I’ve been hearing this for 2 years along with Brady having a slam dunk case. Right up there with Brady is going to own the league after he wins billions of dollars in court. The predictions of the leagues demise by Patriots fans was very premature.

Let .. it .. go. The whole thing has had a bigger impact on Patriot’s fans lives than it has had or will have on the Patriots themselves.

  23. Maybe he can spend the time productively, brushing up on the rulebook and learning to understand the CBA contract.

  24. All Brady needs is one more Super Bowl to be the only quarterback ever with 5. After that all of these laughable attempts at beating Brady and the pats off the field because you can’t beat them on it will look not as victories for pats haters but as motivation for the 5th title.

  25. Some of the guys on the team are not only team mates but also friends. Where does the NFL get the authority to restrict access to his friends?

I support the suspension for destroying his phone. Clear attempt to impede the investigation. But, the restrictions on association go too far.

    ————————————–
If Brady sues civilly, I cannot wait for Kraft, Belichek, McDaniels, the Deflator, most of the players, the video guy, and the rest of the coaching staff to be on the stand, under oath, asserting their fifth amendment rights to every question that they are asked.

No way Brady sues and risks that scenario, or all the ugly underbelly of any pro team being publicly exhibited. A civil suit would destroy any chance of him being in the HOF.

  27. It’s too bad that a guy as great and talented as Brady circumvents the rules of the game. I’ve liked brady since his days at Michigan and I don’t know how any of this will affect his legacy but cheating is cheating and he’ll have to deal with the punishment same as anyone else. That said, I absolutely hate the fact that he plays for such a classless organization that blatantly cheats and nothing ever seems to happen to them

  28. He won’t be rusty. He will have an entire week of practice. It isn’t like he will be coming off a year on the couch.

Obviously Brady doesn’t care about the rules.

    ————

Brady was punished for being aware of someone on the Patriots staff that was intentionally, and very slightly, deflating footballs.

I can’t even figure out what rule Brady broke even if you believe all that.

  30. Rumor has it that Troy Brown, Wes Welker & Randy Moss will be in the Boston area in September.

  31. That’s correct just like any other suspended player Brady can have no football related contact with the team or teammates. Unlike any other player suspended for 4 games in recent memory he is a 16 year veteran HoF QB and his week 5 return will be a scrimmage against the Browns, perfect for knocking the rust off.
Beyond championships and our own teams our sports memories contain their own highlight reels of the best players at any given position we have been fortunate enough to see. I’m no Pats fan but anyone that can’t appreciate they have been lucky enough to watch one of the GOAT play for the past 16 years is a fool. When it comes to QB’s i have seen the torch passed between Unitas, Staubach, Fouts, Montana, Marino, Elway, Young, Manning and Brady. I have been a very lucky sports fan. I’d be luckier still if any of them had played for the Giants.

  32. All you losers in life are gonna have to eat it when the patriots win the super bowl with a very fresh Tom Brady in February.

Saddest takeaway from Florio’s recent review of the O.J. Simpson series, from my perspective (considering that Simpson is now in jail, where he should be) is that justice is not guaranteed to prevail in this country, in part because there are plenty of lawyers and judges, as Florio excitedly points out, that are only in this for the show. They see it as a game to show their brilliance. It has nothing to do with guilt or innocence. It’s all just a game.
Seeing as many of us have been reliving a trial of similar notoriety, it shows that once again, our justice system is incapable of ensuring that justice is served. What I am dying to find out is who will be the Fred Goldman that finally brings Goodell to justice in the Brady case. Tell me that Florio and maybe I’ll be impressed with your legal acumen.

The Patriots footballs were exposed to more rain because the Colts footballs were kept in a plastic bag. Wet footballs warm up more slowly than dry footballs just like you do when you are wet.

The Colts footballs were also allowed to warm up indoors while the Patriots footballs were measured twice. So time was also a factor. Those things explain why the Colts footballs had PSI reductions that were not as dramatic as the Patriots footballs.

  38. No team works harder than the Pats. Numerous former players that were on other teams before or after their time with the Pats have confirmed this.

Hard work, innovation and success used to be respected in this country. Now the politically correct, want everyone to get a participation trophy and nothing more, lazy, whining, self entitled crowd find the hard work and innovation somehow “cheating” because they are either incapable and or to lazy to do so themselves.

Now in the name of parity vile Goodell and his cronies manufacture framegate.

The corruption and stupidity of Goodell’s league office is incredible. They are the cheaters, not the Pats. They have lied about every major “scandal” they have manufactured against the Saints, Cowboys, Washington and Miami, and caught red handed lying about the Ray Rice incident in an attempt to cover it up.

Another factor is that when a football gets wet the leather is more pliable. This allows a wet football to stretch a very small amount. This increases the volume of the container. So then all the air that was crammed into a smaller container is now being held in a larger container so the pressure drops.

It’s science and those that understand it know that the NFL wrongly punished the Patriots for something that naturally occurs. The NFL still has not released the PSI data that was collected during the 2016 season because it shows the same science.

Why do the Pats fans keep bringing up PSI? The suspension is for not cooperating with an investigation not letting air out of a football.

    =====================================

Because science shows that no tampering occurred. Plus Tom Brady did cooperate with the investigation:
—– Tom Brady turned over records from his personal telephone.
—– Tom Brady voluntarily testified under oath.

An extremely wealthy person wants the latest smart phone and can afford one. He wipes the data off the old phone, which is what intelligent people do. The NFL was never going to receive his personal telephone. The NFL had no right to examine a personal telephone.

Some must think that NFL is a law enforcement agency that could have demanded his phone if it wasn’t “destroyed”. Some must also believe that in America people have to surrender their privacy rights and prove their innocence to someone accusing them of something. The NFL used the media to market the sensational word “destroyed” so gullible people were duped.

  55. Ted Wells said this after 5 hours of interrogating Tom” totally cooperative “! Regarding the phone , another quote ” keep the phone. I don’t think it undermines in any way the conclusions of the report “.

Personally I feel he wanted the balls deflated to the lowest range within the legal limits . I just feel the process was flawed . My thought is why didn’t he just say admit that he told them wanted them on the low side of the psi limit allowed within the rules . Then maybe he gets a minimal fine if anything . I think his stubbornness that he was involved at all is what cost him .

I just feel the process was flawed .

    ————————————————————–

The following must be the flawed process that you mentioned…

—- Confirmation Bias – the conclusion was pre-determined. Evidenced by the report that at the beginning of the halftime break NFL employee Mike Kensil told Patriots ‘you’re in big f—ing trouble’.
—- Selection Bias – selecting only 4 Colts footballs and not alternating the measurements between footballs of both teams.
—- Measurement Bias – using 2 different pressure gauges and not keeping track of which gauge was used with accurate notes. Allowing some footballs of one team to warm up while measuring the other teams footballs.
—- Systematic Error – the testing was flawed because the indoor and outdoor temperatures were not even considered.
—-Scientific Method – is usually defined as a 6 step sequential process. The NFL did not follow scientific process, instead the NFL quickly performed 2 steps out of order. The NFL started with their conclusion and then did a hasty experiment where they ran out of time and didn’t measure all 24 footballs. Accurate notes were not taken.
—- Control Group – there was no control group because the NFL was not being scientific. The next best thing to a control group was the idea of independent after the fact PSI testing of footballs in similar weather conditions. PSI information was obtained following the NFL’s conclusion and May 11, 2015 decision to punish Tom Brady.

The NFL subsequently collected PSI measurements during NFL games played during the 2015 season. But is keeping that information secret because it exonerates Tom Brady.

So every Monday the Patriots will release a marginal player, who will no longer be Brady’s teammate, and that player will go over to Brady’s house and fill him in on what he needs to know, then re-sign with the Patriots on Wednesday. It’s the Patriot Way.
    ——————————————————————–

And it would be completely legal and within the rules of the outrageous suspension. There would be nothing you or Goodell could do but huff and puff. How”s that make you feel?

..and for hindering the NFL’s investigation.
Why leave that most important part out?

    —————–

I agree, but I left that out because I was talking about if he actually broke rules of the game.

  69. More than likely he will hook up with a couple of High School Teams in the area. There is one 6 miles north of his residence in Boston that has one of the most diverse teams in the state. Breno Giacomini played for them about 10 years ago, or next city over… Everett High School the most dominant High School Football team in the state over the last 50 years

  70. So it has come to this. A once revered mascot and franchise have been so thoroughly tarnished, they should be forced to change their name, even before the the Washington franchise. Henceforth the NE franchise should be known as the Sniveling Patsies.

It would be wise for Goodell to never show his face at Gillete Stadium ever again. Just sayin’
    ———————————————————
Totally agree. He’s not welcome. Under any circumstances. Send a stand-in. Please. But if he ever does gather the stones to do so, Patriot fans should bend over backward to make it the most despicable and painful visit in the history of the league.

What’s that fool gonna do? Suspend 68,756 people? I don’t think Kraft will stand for another fine and loss of draft picks to that witch hunting boob!

  72. Full disclosure- I have not, nor do I intend to, read ANY of the posts.

I have just ONE question – How many of you out there, if given the chance, would pass up the opportunity to go have a game of catch with Tom Brady, followed by a picture with him?

  73. it is really quite astounding how stupid and gullible people are.

Brady absolutely had converations about PSi in the balls with the ball boys.
It’s very clear that the Refs allowed balls to be at 16PSI in a Jets game LONG BEFORE the AFCCG.
Brady, being a QB who likes the ball at the low end of the legal PSI range, instructed his guys to make sure they were A. LEGAL and B at 12.5PSI to start the game.
EXPECIALLY after finding out the balls in the Jets game were at 16PSI. Hard as a brick.

Why can’t so many morons out there see what happened.

They started the game at 12.5 and the air molecules contracted in the wet, cold weather and there you have it; balls measuring under the limit.
It really is not all that hard to understand.

You haters just NEED the fantasy to be true to continue to get some warped kind of satisfaction out of cutting a incredibly talented successful NFL player down.

The dumbing down of America is accelerating and shows NO SIGNS of slowing down.

    Ignorance is bliss

Meanwhile, still waiting for the two actual improper ball-inflation schemes – where Aaron Rodgers admitted in 2015 to long-term rule-breaking, and where the Colts at the Jan 2015 AFCCG were illegally carrying and using needles – to be investigated by a quick-acting league that is so super-keen on fairness and integrity.
    ——————————————————–
Rodgers said he inflates his footballs before the refs test them. But hey, that was a pretty good attempt to slander him.

  75. What’s really cool is Jimmy G will either be the heir apparent to Brady or he’ll be traded to one of the other QB starved teams for a bunch of picks….probably a couple of 1st rounders over a 3 year period….
    Sweet!!!!

  76. Actually I see him traded for a couple 1st rounders or a 1st and couple 2nd rounders…. After all, Brady will be playing for the Pats until he retires in 4-6 more years…. Looks like Jacoby Brisset will have his shot to be Brady’s heir apparent……
That should allow him plenty of time for his development behind the GOAT……
Life is GOOD in Patriot land…. VERY GOOD!!!!
    & we’re on to AZ…..

  77. Hopefully Tom does file a civil law suit , the Patriots and ALL of their staff have NOTHING to hide unlike those @ NFL headquarters.
The first question should be why the NFL leaked erroneous PSI levels, followed by who leaked them and why they never bothered to correct them.
Would also like to know why they believed everything Walt Anderson said until it didn’t fit the agenda. If they believed which gauge Walt said he used, framegate would have been dead.
    There was no tampering.

  78. Although I agree with you, we need to remember this is Roger Goodell with article 46. If Brady comes back not rusty it will be “proof” that Rob Gronkowski secretly got him plans. “4 games each and I don’t need evidence because article 46.” I recommend the Patriots only win by 3 and Brady throw a couple picks in junk time. 🙂

  79. I agree with the “esteemed” commenters on Brady cheating, but remember it will be colder at night and Brady will be busy deflating all the car tires in the Northern hemisphere. Does this need a sarcasm marker or is it clear their assumption is ludicrous?

  80. Fan Boy lawyers. Shady has no basis for a lawsuit against the NFL. Do you even know the elements of a defamation suit involving a pubic figure (NY v. Sullivan)? Nah, didn’t think so.

  81. Was interesting. A NC judge was doing the rounds at elementary schools locally in preparation for the elections. It was kind of a civics lesson on why everyone should go out and vote. A ten year old fourth grader put up his hand to ask a question. The judge asked what his question was. The boy asked, “Why, if the NFL said they have no evidence against him, does Tom Brady have a four game suspension?”
The judge laughed and said that was an uncommon question coming from a young boy living in the Carolinas. He said the most common questions asked by boys his age was whether it was true that girls will be allowed to use the boys bathroom next year. (The judge said no). Or whether the judge thought that Cam Newton would still Dab next year. (The judge said he may not Dab, but that he was probably still going to do a dance).
The boy said, judge, I asked you a serious question. Flustered, the judge said, “son, I don’t know. Sometimes the laws get so mixed up that bad things happen to innocent people.” So the boy asked, “So why should I vote for that kind of a system.” The smartest thing the judge said all day was, “So that you can fix the broken system. So that innocent people, like Brady, are not wrongfully punished again.”
The place broke up laughing when the boy answered, “Well that’s a good enough reason for me. You can count on me voting in November.”
Out of the mouth of babes.

So, basically you are saying that it’s fine to do something KNOWINGLY illegal like inflating the balls over the legal limit & its up to the refs to catch it & if they don’t it’s not Rogers fault he’s playing with balls he actually knew would be illegal to begin with??? THAT form of cheating is ok….ok got it…. Stay classy there
The Patriots Balls were never even proven to be illegal beyond the natural laws of science…. The measurements were never recorded before the game & wells thru out the refs best recollection on which of the 2 gauges he used to check the balls as it didn’t meet his pre-determined agenda to show anything illegal happened to the balls….
Just out of curiosity, why do you think the league never kept the refs in the loop DURRING their “spot checks” as it said it was going to do & require the refs to post the information on their report to the league the following day after the game??
Also did you catch the new rule change that the League incorporated after doing the spot checks…. BOTH teams are NOW REQUIRED to supply 24 game day balls as opposed to the past requirement of just 12 game day balls each…..my guess is they finally figured out what most everyone already knew… Balls NATURALLY deflate in cold/wet weather games & their way to solve that oversight is to just swap the 12 balls from the 1st half with the new 12 warm balls required at 1/2 time for 2 bs half use so the effects will be minimal…. Not too hard to figure out people… It’s called logic

The NFL brass will be begging for mercy when TB sues them in civil court and they have to answer for all their lies.

    ________________
There is this thing called discovery that goes both ways. Except for the Packers, who are publically owned, every team keeps its books secret. How quickly will they settle before letting the union study them? That is even before we get into any pilot flying jay scenarios. Meanwhile everything potentially embarrassing for Brady has been leaked already. We suspected he was P-whipped and now have proof. We suspected he thought Peyton had only a few years left, and now we know. What more can embarrass Brady. Not Belichick, Kraft, etc. just BRADY.

  84. I’m a HUGE Patriots fan…. That being said, please knock off all the civil defamation of character law suit stuff…. That will Never happen even though I’d love to see it happen myself…. That would be a massively drawn out almost impossible case to actually prove in a court of law that Brady himself would have to both pay for & invest so much of his personal time in…..
Everyone knows this was a total sham, haters/trolls included, but it just gives them an outlet to try to bring Patriots fans down & hopefully get a respons out of us for their own amusement….after all the Patfiots have been so good for sooo long it just kills them….
Enjoy the funny hater comments for what they are…. I In turn will just continue to watch & enjoy the greatest coach/QB combination to ever play the game wreak havoc like they have for years until it finally comes to an end 4-6 years down the road…..I suggest you do the same as well!!!

  85. OMG JE11 will have to cry while reading Tiger Beat magazine, eating Hershey kisses and listening to Shaun Cassidy albums, as he will miss TB 12.

  86. Once upon a time…………
A troll was rooting for the Fins…………all while the Patriots were collecting wins.
Because the Fins gave the troll nothing to celebrate….the troll just sat back and collected hate.
The jealous troll could only watch in despair…………while 4 times Tom Brady lifted the Lombardi high in the air.
The reason for the endless jealously couldn’t be more clear…………while the Patriots fans enjoyed victory Fins fans where shaking their fists up in the air.
The troll bawled for so many years…………that a pile of salt accumulated from the tears.
Since 2000 Tom Brady was on a roll…………and all that time the troll thought that the Dolphins would win the next superbowl.
The troll became very jealous as he watched the games…………so he created user accounts mentioning “patriots” or “brady” right in the names.
The troll sat in his tree…………looking for every PFT article mentioning the Patriots or Tom Brady.
The troll wrote “cheat” many times each day…………and then it seemed as if that was all the troll knew how to say.
Those smarter than the troll already knew…………that none of the “cheat” nonsense was even true.
The troll was delighted when the Tom Brady was framed…………because the NFL couldn’t understand science and Tom Brady was blamed.
It must be sad being a troll…………when Tom Brady missing 4 games is like your superbowl.
The troll has a low IQ just like half the nation…………explaining why all the haters haven’t noticed that the NFL is hiding the 2015 PSI information.
Now the troll obsessively types “cheaters” regardless that its lame………..all because the Dolphins can’t win a big game.
The Patriots Lombardi trophies have an illustrious shine…………so the troll is jealous and is compelled to whine.

Hardly “dominance.” Do the math. Pittsburgh won 4 SB’s over a 6 year span, totaling 30 point margin.

Pat’s won 3 SB’s by a margin of 3 points per game, and one SB was gifted to them by a 4 point margin. Those wins came over a 14 year span. Hardly dominance when for 10 years, and having the self proclaimed GOAT and best coach in football, yet you’ve not won the big dance. Just sayin’

    —————————————————————

Anyone still believing the “patriots win because they cheat” nonsense to just press the reset button and clear their mind of false information. Until they hit the reset button they will continue to be stuck on the single incident from a single game played almost 10 years ago, where a memo indicated that a camera needed to be moved to a different location within the stadium. The film from that game was destroyed by the NFL so that no teams, including The Patriots could ever benefit by watching it. Destroying the film also ensured if The Patriots kept an undisclosed copy they would have risked having Roger Goodell over punishing them again.

How do you reconcile in your mind that a film that was never watched allowed a team win 4 Superbowls?

You may also want to consider a few facts which are overlooked by those still believing the “cheater” nonsense.
Tom Brady and The Patriots won the Superbowls in 2001, 2003 and 2004. That means that 3 of the 4 Patriot Superbowl wins were prior to the 2007 Camera in The Wrong Location incident. The Patriots lost a 1st round draft pick in 2008 for not following a memo.

In a strange punishment that was clearly aimed at creating league parity Roger Goodell made the penalty contingent by punishing The Patriots based on future success. Instead of selecting a punishment that Roger Goodell felt was fair, he instead created a contingent punishment that would punish the Patriots based on their success in the 2007/2008 season. Because the Patriots made the playoffs they were deprived of their 1st round pick in the 2008 draft.

  96. It is us against the rest of the NFL. This will only make Tom Brady more determined to overcome the odds and have a truly memorable season. The bias against the greatest player of all time is there for everyone to see. It is obvious.

Now THAT sounds more believable to see happen by who knows what type of “sealed documentation” the LEAGUE made them sign in order to allow the Patriots to bring them back, after all the LEAGUE required the Pats to suspend them & the LEAGUE had to sign off on the Pats being allowed to remove their suspension…..

    —————————————————————–

And now thanks to the NFL and its cheating the Patriots to help create league parity, the Steelers and 30 other teams are playing for a participation trophy.

Since the ignored science and stole 2 draft picks from the Patriots. Including a 1st round pick. Those lost picks could weaken the team for the next 16 years. Not to mention that Brady now must miss 25% of the 2016 season, again because the NFL didn’t understand science.

It would be funny if the Steelers had to give up home field advantage in the playoffs by one game in the standings to a team that beat the Patriots in the 1st 4 games of the season while Tom Brady was at home. Because the Steelers lose to the Patriots in week 7 when Brady is playing.

All because the NFL punished Brady for what the weather did to footballs.

Thanks for the lecture, but I didn’t say Brady didn’t have anything to do with it. I just said I can’t figure out what actual rule he broke. The only rule on the books was a team employee only rule and it had a 25 k fine. The point I am making is he’s not some rule breaking master mind. He just likes his footballs a certain way like every other QB. I don’t think he broke any actual rules.

The penalty was assessed under the integrity of the game catch all, not because he actually broke a game rule.

Except that during that press conference and for the next 6 months the NFL lied to Tom Brady and everyone in the world by making everyone including Tom Brady think that 11 of 12 of the Patriots footballs had deflated by 2.0 PSI.

That 2.0 PSI deflation information was later corrected, after it festered in the media for 6 months, and to this day many people still believe that it was true. It was the NFL that was lying, not Tom Brady.

I can’t even figure out what rule Brady broke even if you believe all that.”
    ——
One would have to be in total denial to think a $10 an hour equipment guy is going to alter TB’s balls without TB’s direction. And then there’s those text’s.

The problem most TB defenders have is with the NFL guilt standard of ‘more probable than not’…but that’s the standard the rest of the teams in the NFL are held to…we understand Pat’s fans don’t like it…because you’re entitled to be treated differently, right…because in your minds you’re special…for the last time, it wasn’t the crime, it was the conspiracy stupid

    ————-

Thanks for the lecture, but I didn’t say Brady didn’t have anything to do with it. I just said I can’t figure out what actual rule he broke. The only rule on the books was a team employee only rule and it had a 25 k fine. The point I am making is he’s not some rule breaking master mind. He just likes his footballs a certain way like every other QB. I don’t think he broke any actual rules.

The penalty was assessed under the integrity of the game catch all, not because he actually broke a game rule.
    ______

Like Watergate, the “to do with it” or conspiracy itself was a crime. If you conspire to commit murder, and don’t succeed, that’s a crime. The NFL standard of ‘more probable than not’ was met by the conspiracy TB and the EQ mgr created….the evidence of TB and the equipment manager was overwhelming. Destroyed evidence, failure to cooperate with the investigation, meeting in the dark shadows of the QB room to get their stories straight, after they’d been caught, something they’d never done before, mishandling of game balls by the equipment mgr prior to the AFC Championship game taking them like a thief from the referee’s locker, something unheard of before by any equipment mgr. There’s your ‘more probable than not’ standard met that TB and the EQ mgr conspired to cheat the Colts.

  112. If you want to be amused you can watch the following video rants by fans of other teams that noticed an off season roster move by the Patriots.
You can find them by searching for the titles:

“Patriots and Bill Belichick getting Martellus Bennett is not fair (highlight)”

“WHY CHICAGO, WHY Patriots acquire TE Martellus Bennett from Bears”

While watching you can appreciate the skillset of a new player that Tom Brady will get to play catch with starting in week 5. Fans of other teams may want to cry if they watch them.

  113. There has to be a much deeper story than what everyone knows about. This is very personal between these men. This can’t just be about the PSI levels, everyone understands that the league screwed up with their testing procedures and could have resolved this behind closed doors with The Teams and Union.

The Pat’s are “liars” and “cheaters.” Where’s my proof?

Brady stood at a press conference for nearly 90 minutes responding to questions with one lie after another. After that pre SB press conference anyone would be nuts to believe a single word TB says. He’s truly pathological.

  115. How ridiculous. This situation isn’t specific to Brady. No player can have contact with their team while suspended. PFT trolled Pats fans with this story and look what they found….

    ——-
Agreed. But – TB determined his own fate when instead of ‘fessing up to ball deflation he and the EQ guy conspired against the league to attempt to cover up his actions. Don’t forget, there was a SB game about to be played, and no way did the Pat’s nor TB want to risk TB being suspended for that game. In the courtroom that’s known as “motive.” TB had motive. The Pat’s had motive. And if the truth were known my money is riding on that Bellichek, aka Mr. control freak who controls everything with the Pat’s knew too. The conspiracy has both TB and the EQ guy falling on their swords to cover for Bellichek.

  117. All this excitement for a guy who’s career averages almost identical to Owen Daniels . Daniels was a good player but didn’t really strike much fear in the heart of his opponents . And Bennett’s going into his ninth year so it’s not like he’s a young player with a lot of upside .

My “proof” is what resulted after the TB press conference, not before it. Evidence of guilt, and evidence of conspiracy. Only those who choose to stick their heads in the sand because they desired NE to be cleared fail to see evidence of guilt, and the NFL ‘more probable than not’ standard of guilt was met. TB lied, and now his sentence is about to be served…get over it.

  123. Why do the Pats fans keep ringing up PSI?

Arrgh…because that’s what the punishment was based on. On appeal of the punishment Goodell changed the infraction (probably because it was being debunked) to non-cooperation. That is not arbitration nor does it meet the requirements of the disciplinary process. It is moving the goal posts, no pun intended.

What makes this so much fun for fans of 31 other teams and football fans in general is, in all likelihood NE begins it’s interminable death spiral at the beginning of this season and NE fans can’t see it coming. The schadenfreude is even more delicious when anticipated.
    =================================
I took a vote amongst all my fellow Patriots fans and it was unanimous – we are all impressed with your use of the word schadenfreude. Except that using it on every third post is getting a little tiring.
But what will be delightful is that there will be no freude on your part because the Patriots have every potential schaden scenario under control. So there’s that meine kleine Schnecke.

You are right, it is much deeper. And the origins have been disclosed well over a year ago. It goes to the very psyche of Goodell from when he was a little boy his Senator father was rejected by his own political party for election all the way through his college years when it became clear he was not good enough to play in the pros. He developed a hatred for those better than himself which is complicated by the fact that his personality is such that he believes himself to be better than anyone else in any field. Read Goodell’s history. Pretty sad really.

You’ve got to be kidding me kissbillsthings. You know Tammy’s favorite song? Sycophant.
    —————————————————————–
Not judging, but I just have seen several individuals on PFT refer to Mr. Tom Brady as “Tammy” and I’m wondering if there is a form of someone being attracted to someone else where a person imagines that a man is a female? And then they go on to make up a pet name for their interest that sounds more feminine. Then the person obsesses over their newfound interest by finding articles about the person so they can use the pet name as often as possible?
If that’s what is happening then we should all be accepting of it and not judge. If its a bad typo then it should only happen once.

  128. skawh:

Now you are talking about this and comparing it to a crime. Dark shadows of the QB room and all. Once again, not saying Brady had nothing to do with it, but it hardly resembles a crime. It’s definitely not worse than the Vikings heating up the balls or the Falcons pumping crowd noise or silicon on a lineman’s uni or stickem. It’s definitely not worse than steroid usage, which is rampant and completely ignored, unless someone is so stupid they get caught with a test they know is coming. It’s barely worse then an on field penalty.

    The punishment is idiotic.

So, if the Patriots just cooperated and didn’t think they were above the league Tom Brady would be on the field week one. It is clear to anyone that saw Belichick and Brady’s first Deflategate press conferences they were not being totally honest. Especially Belichick answering every question “Ask Tom.” Now without out a shadow of a doubt everything The Patriots have done in the Brady/Belichick era is tarnished.

Where in this ( nothing hot in the NFL today story) does it say Tom Brady wants to play catch with active NFL players?

Where in this story does it say that Coach Bill is going to allow it? ( could you imagine if a WR was to get hurt off grounds of Gillette)

Please …stop this madness. the ruling stands Tom Brady will serve his 4 games and life will move on.

I can’t imagine what everyone will write about after the 4 games has been served…..what will all the haters have to complain about…

Please quiet down people and let the NFL training camps begin and the season follow.. Deflategte is done…over…history…..

    —————-

Every celebrity with half a brain has their cellular phone destroyed when they switch phones. I am sure as the NFL tried to get their hands on Brady’s phone, he decided he would never hand it over, because his lawyer said it wasn’t required to be cooperative. Then he destroyed his phone. Why on earth would he want his personal texts to be leaked. Ever. They got his email and it leaked in 1 day and caused him a bunch of problems. Imagine his text?

Not sure what everyone thinks you would find there. The NFL employees including Kraft and Belichick and all the ball boys, all gave their phone because they had to. All the texts to and from Brady were there.

The only texts Brady had on his phone were to personal friends, family, other players, his wife, etc.

Why on earth would those emails be relevant? They wouldn’t be, then they would be leaked.

Also, if there was some kind of undercover operation you can be sure that anyone involved would be using burner phones and not the league supplied phones and personal phones. Why would they? it’s like a $20 problem to fix.

Brady should have owned it from the start and just said he would never hand over his phone and that the league couldn’t be trusted with his personal information, period. Shouldn’t have given emails either, as it only caused him grief with Peyton Manning and others and Goodell didn’t care anyway.

    —————————————————————–

Actually… what is clear, if you take it in the context that the NFL deceitfully informed the Patriots and all of the NFL world that 11 out of 12 balls were 2.0 PSI lower than spec (a straight up LIE), was that Brady and BB were trying to figure out what the heck happened. They didn’t have access to the “evidence” that the NFL or even the Colts had. So they were trying to answer questions when they had no answers at all.

How about someone accuse you of embezzling funds from your company and then you have to go out and hold a press conference with everyone having all of this false leaked information and they are peppering you with questions about it? You would be scrambling, too. By the time you are actually exonerated, and the story runs on the back page of the local paper while the accusation ran on the front page of every major national publication, you are not the same man you were. Your reputation is tarnished. Headline reading simpletons have relegated you to the trash heap of history with slanderous asterisks next to your name as well.

    Injustice from start to finish.

  137. I’m a Ravens fan but Tom Brady is the best QB of our time, hands down. All the hatred and animosity aside, to say otherwise, is to be foolish or ignorant, of which I am neither. Brady could go out with Giselle for 4 weeks, hang on the beach, play with his kids, come back week 5 and be laser accurate and look like he never missed a beat. If I was a Patriots fan, I wouldn’t worry a bit because Tom will come back ticked off and will probably win the next 12 games straight then win the super bowl. It is what it is, he got caught doing what he did, had he just served his suspension it would have never been a big deal but he did more damage to his legacy dragging this thing out than he would have by serving the four games and everyone would forget about it. Now we have a history of deflategate and all the posturing and legal battles to discuss for eternity.

Even better analogy. Your neighbor to the right of you dies of a heart attack. Your neighbor to the left, and the guy next to him, has always had an issue with your house, how you keep it up nicer than theirs, and they go to the police and say that you murdered your neighbor, specifying exactly how it was done. You are arrested and arraigned. As you are still processing what has happened, knowing only that your neighbor is dead and what you have been accused of, how are you going to be in the line of questioning? At a loss, just like BB and TB were at their first pressers.

He was railroaded. But all of the haters love the fact that he was nailed, no matter the veracity of the charge. And if you can’t get him on the original charge, trump up another one… get that one to stick, even if it was an innocent action in any other light.

  139. Mix, this is something many Pats’ can’t seem to comprehend. Any one who has truly followed this case has read all the documents from both sides. And anyone who truly believes Tom Brady is guily has based their opinion on the words and actions of Tom Brady, JJ and JM. I have always said the science clearly implicates them. The report submitted clearly showed all the balls measured below legal limits. However, this is the first time this type of investigation was done so if it was just about the science, this would have ended different. But this has never been just about the science. This has also been about the texts, the varying accounts JM, his rule violations, JJ denying that he spoke to Tom Brady about the deflation of the balls the next morning but having to change his story to the Wells Investigation when he was faced with the evidence of his lies. Tom has not told the truth or has given a direct answer on many key issues that I have lost count. The varying accounts on why his cell phone was destroyed, as one judge said, doesn’t make any sense. I believe Tom Brady is guilty is because Tom Brady left me with no other choice.

  140. Only the willfully ignorant dupes looking for a crybaby excuse would cling so tightly to denying science, and regurgitation of the already exposed and emphatically PROVEN NFL Lies.

Yes in the Hater Trolls’ world, you are correct, but it has already been proven that the Trolls will believe anything Roger puts in front of them, as long as it is anti Patriots. Therefore, the Trolls have 0.0 credibility and certainly don’t speak for the rest of the neutral world. Sorry, as much as you want that to be the case…it’s not.

Seriously, how does any of the alleged lies told by the NFL have any thing to do with the fact 11 of 11 balls tested fell below legal limits, even after applying the IGL? Brady committed perjury and obstructed an investigation. The only thing deflating sun is his pass rating – Jim McNally. Let me guess, Roger Goodell made him write this text. And before you spout off and say the NFL manipulated the measurements to ensure they would fail, it can just as easily be said all those experts who Kraft asked to be part of this, can also have manipulated their numbers to support their cause. However, Exponent did do experiments and they also brought in Dr. Paul Marlowe to find fault with their report – he found none. And by the way, Roger Goodell is NOT SUSPENDED for lying and cheating, but Brady is. And the only reason to cheat is to win games and pat your stats. Brady cheated at his profession. He cheated at the game of football. He is tarnished. His legacy will always be questioned. Twice with in 10 years the Pats’ have been caught cheating. Your team’s accomplishments are tainted.

Actually, the psi measurements of the Patriots’ footballs were exactly what they should have been after applying the IGL especially if one accepts Walt Anderson’s recollection of which gauge he used. Most of us find it more than a bit curious that Wells accepted everything Anderson remembered … except for the one thing that would most clearly exonerate the Patriots. That’s not manipulating the measurements, that’s manipulating the facts to make the measurements fit a predetermined conclusion.

Also, please note that AEI, HeadSmart Labs, backpicks, Professor Robert Blecker, Dr. Drew Fustin, the 20 university professors who signed the amicus brief, and many others were rejecting how Exponent’s measurements were interpreted. What they were saying was that those measurements actually show that there was no manual deflation. It was all natural.

The NFL would have looked pretty stupid if, after a huge PR offensive to portray the Patriots as cheaters, the Wells Report would have cleared the the team of wrongdoing. This would have been especially true considering the fact that the NFL paid Wells upwards of $3,000,000. No one spends millions of dollars to make themselves look stupid, and no one getting paid millions of dollars wants to make the client look stupid.

So ask yourself this question. Who do you trust more, those getting paid millions of dollars for an opinion (like Wells and Exponent) or those putting their reputations on the line for free?

  148. Letmefeel, first, you are wrong. The balls measured below legal limits even after the ideal gas law was applied. The debate that Florio and others have harped on is that it should have been more. I personally believed the NFL would have loved to exhonrate the Patriots and Tom Brady. I can’t think of one comissioner on any level of sports who adores and welcomes a cheating scandal. And it even damages the sport when it is leveled against an elite qb. What hurts more is that this is the second time within ten years the same organization has to be sanctioned for cheating. I am willing to bet everything I own that had their been no texts, no lies and Brady had given over the requested materials to Wells, Goodell would have swept it under the rug-again. No, not to protect the Pats, but the bad publicity a cheating scandal brings to any sport.

  149. @limakey,

No, the balls were not below the limit after application of the IGL. That’s what Exponent (the same folks that say second hand smoke is harmless) said, but they are clearly the outlier here. It reminds me of the mother watching the high school marching band who exclaims, “Look. Everybody is out of step except my Johnny!”

No one spends $3,000,000 in an effort to “sweep something under the rug.” Sweeping something under the rug can be done almost for free. One spends that kind of money for one reason, and one reason only. To provide cover for an outcome that is predetermined.

    ————

you should go back and check your math. some of the balls were above the predicted level, some within the predicted range, and some below. the count was evenly spread above, within, and below the predicted range.

The average of all balls was .02 below the predicted range. And don’t forget that the gauges used had a readout in .05 increments. andthat the temperature used in the clacs was taken at the weather station at the top of the lighthouse. I’m curious as to how on earth that temperature is supposed to relate to what the temperature of the WET balls were…..wet from falling rain. The balls could have been colder, or even warmer, than that. However usually the precipitation is colder than the air temp, but not always. Two weeks ago we had hail here in NH while the temp was over 90 degrees.

bottom line is there is no proof. other than a guy calling himself the deflator 8 months before the game being investigated.

  151. It kind of makes you wonder how much heartache all these posters who rip Brady have gone through at the hands of the Pats. Really? Just ignore all the scathing texts not to mention the self moniker THE DEFLATOR imposed upon himself!

Twenty-one university professors, all with doctorates in physics and/or engineering, stated the following regarding the reduction of psi at the AFCCG: “As professors, we cannot fathom how it is permissible to impose punishment for the possibility of a negligible increment of pressure loss, when underinflated footballs are common to NFL games, when laws of physics cause much larger pressure drops, and when the very possibility of an additional increment of pressure loss was generated from assumptions of the league’s choosing rather than data.”

Are they morons? Hardly! Is it laughable to apply the laws of physics to footballs? Of course not! What’s truly laughable and moronic is to dismiss out of hand the analysis of such highly qualified experts. Bottom line … the weather conditions at the AFCCG are more than sufficient to explain the loss of psi during the game.

Those you refer to as “Brady lovers” are not ignoring the text messages. Since the footballs lost air pressure due to weather conditions, and not because someone let air out of them, the text messages are irrelevant. After all, only a moron would argue, “No air was released from the footballs at the AFCCG … and we have text messages to prove who did it!”

  155. I don’t think this will end well for the Commish.
You think ratings will improve because Brady is couch surfing?
Forget the CBA, I wish Brady would sue the NFL.
For a quarter of the season, I have to watch dopes…

  156. letmefeelyourlove, you should read Russ Roberts ‘The Data In The Wells Report’. Excellent article by a self-admitted Patriots fan. It is not your typical homer story in defense of the Pats. You keep bringing up these 21 professors. As far as I can tell they did no experiments, they are expressing their opinions. They did go through cross examination during Brady’s appeal hearing. Did they submit their data and the results of their experiments? The problem with your logic is that you insist on them being clean as whistle and have everything to lose. I am shocked and amazed that you do not give the same respect to Exponent and Dr. Paul Marlowe. You may disagee with their findings, however you have read about their experiments, you have seen their workand have totally rejected it. Yet you have not seen any the work these others have done and you accept their opinions based on what?
