Report: Seahawks extend Pete Carroll through 2019

Getty Images

General Manager John Schneider signed an extension with the Seahawks over the weekend and, as expected, his partnership with coach Pete Carroll won’t be ending any time soon.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Seahawks and Carroll have agreed to an extension that puts Carroll under contract in Seattle through 2019. Carroll and Schneider both joined the Seahawks in 2010 and their record leaves little reason to wonder why the Seahawks will keep everything in place.

The team has gone 60-36 under Carroll in the regular season and 8-4 in the playoffs. The latter record includes their Super Bowl XLVIII title, their run back to the game the next year and at least one playoff win in each of the last four seasons.

There’s no word on the financial terms of the deal, but Carroll was already among the best-paid coaches in the league. His new deal will keep him there and keep him in Seattle through at least his 68th birthday if all goes according to plan.

  1. This is good news for you Seahawks fans. People are going to troll you a little bit. Don’t get emo sensitive about it though…

  2. This Cardinals fan has a lot of respect for the job he and Schneider have done. These guys, along with Arians and Keim, make it a little easier to forget the days when the NFC West was the worst division in the league.

Wishing you second-best in the division for years to come 😎

  7. wait…I thought Seahawk fans had reason to be concerned due to the silence regarding new contracts. Guess not

  8. Wasn’t it last Thursday that Florio was stirring the pot, suggesting that PC/JS might bail after the season?

I guess we should thank you Florio, if you hadn’t reminded them, they might have forgot.

  9. My Seahawks will continue to play their rivals in the playoffs for yeas to come as they have in years past. As for the lower echelon division fans, I’ll say this. May the next twenty years bring you as much success as you’ve seen in the last trend years.

Can’t you Cards fans be just a little more pissy and ignorant about your football? I mean how can we have a great rivalry with you guys if you don’t act like 49er fans? It’s just not as much fun when we have to respect you guys! :0

They’re already paid and the Seahawks have $23 million in cap space in 2017 and $45 million in 2018.

  14. People gonna talk smack about the Seahawks. I mean they’re one of the best teams in the NFL and will be for at least 3 more years probably more with Wilson. I get it, niner fans gotta be depressed with their train wreck and of course we get these weird Vikings trolls. The one thing I don’t get is the tool sheds that don’t know football. We still get these “wait till you have to start paying your players” comments. Dude, pay attention. Everyone’s signed and Bennett is the only guy who might still need to get paid. There’s gonna be guys like Kam who might have to go but c’mon. If your gonna hate at least sound like you know football. Things are good up here… Pete and John drafted a championship team and now their all paid. Nothing tells me they won’t be supplementing them with more studs. See you in the playoffs. Not you Niner fans but you can watch us every year if you want.

  18. As a PC fan, I take offense at this type of Dufus calling out Pete as one…

time to pay all the good players…

Nope, I think you’re the Dufus, dude.
The player’s love him… The player’s especially RESPECT him! They have been down (2-4 last year) and then brought them back.

and the #1 reason you’re a dufus…. “Time to pay all the players” — you really have been living in your Mom’s basement if you really think that. Pokeman is addicting.

  19. I’m not a SEA fan, or anyone of the NFCW, but it’s nice to see continuity with a team.
Quit hating on SEA, NE and the likes of them.
I know where my team sits, so don’t be baby and a pansy by bashing other team teams success.

  20. Cool, now maybe they’ll spend some money on getting something resembling an offensive line.

  21. “This Cardinals fan has a lot of respect for the job he and Schneider have done. These guys, along with Arians and Keim, make it a little easier to forget the days when the NFC West was the worst division in the league.”

This hawks fan says right back at you – – two of the best run teams in the league right now, and pretty loaded w talent. It’s good to have a rival with games to circle on the schedule. In all my years of sports fandom, I loved few things more than watching those Hawks/Niners slugfests from a few seasons back. Hawks/Cards is the best thing for me since then.

Looking forward to the battles. . .

  24. A viking fan trolling? Haha good stuff.

As for the NE fans you kids weren’t alive but before 2000 your team was a laughingstock. Bb and tb put together some championships but before that the Patriots were a joke in the nfl.

So yeah, all it takes is one great hc/gm combo to change everything. The Patriots are the proof of that. Seattle is enjoying theirs at the moment…and will for at least a few more years.

  25. BB and Brady built a dynasty, yeah. But it was Drew and Parcells who laid the foundation. They were terrible in late 80s and VERY early 90s.

Not long after they got Drew they were hardly a laughing stock. They even made it to the SB in 96. Not all Pats fans are bandwagons or teenagers.

Good for Pete. I liked him all the way back to NE
    ——+——
Then you weren’t paying attention! Pete is likeable and has done better 2nd time around (as quite a few HCs do), but he inherited a great SB-appearing Pats from the brilliant Parcells and went consistently backwards. Now Pete has essentially inherited Holmgren’s decent-enough Hawks which a year of Mora hadn’t had time to ruin, but he may have simply got lucky with their 3rd-round pick of Wilson in an otherwise poor drafting. And Pete has demonstrated the same players-friend but lack of discipline that was part of the problem he caused in NE. And he’s yet to demonstrate uber-tactics on the field. So be careful what you wish for Hawks fans – Pete might yet get you another SB but it’s just too soon to say whether he has fully learned and evolved from his past mistakes and could simply keep retreating from a single high-point in 2013.

And where were you in 1997-99 when Pete Carroll took Parcells’ solid 1996 team and spent 3 years completely wrecking it? BB built a dynasty out of Carroll’s ruin – and BB remains the last coach to take the Browns to a playoff win (and went 11-5 with Matt Cassell, and has 2 rings as a Giant and his superbowl-winning DC-gameplan is in the hall of fame) – all without Brady.

  29. “Now Pete has essentially inherited Holmgren’s decent-enough Hawks which a year of Mora hadn’t had time to ruin,”

That might be the dumbest comment of the day. The Seahawks won 4 the last year of Holmgren and 5 in Mora’s one season. Pete Carroll and John Schneider came in and made over 200 roster moves their first year in 2010 and pretty near completely dismantled that old and slow Holmgren team. Two years later when Wilson started, they were down to maybe one or two players left from the Holmgren years. No this team has been completely drafted and built by Pete Carroll and John Schneider from the ground up.

  30. Someone needs to explain the cap to Seattle fans. None of them understand it very well. “Seattle has this much cap space n 2017 and this much more n 2018…”. know what? In 2020, they will have 160 or 170 million in cap space. That is all assuming they do not sign another player to a contract. The cap space doesn’t really exist. New contracts and extensions will eat up that cap space, so the space is just a number that will go into new contracts. Where Seattle will run into problems is the large contracts they have given players. The Saints did that and many other teams have done it and it killed their cap. When teams start cutting losses and paying guys who are no longer on the roster, it kills the cap.

Anyway, Seattle is n decline and have some huge contracts to pay on. They will still win, but don’t expect another Lombardi for awhile.

you forgot: Best 1-year dynasty in the NFL

  32. Schneider is probably the best GM in the business, but…
    13-3 Win SBowl
    12-4 Lose SBowl
10-6 Blown out by Carolina in Div rnd, after winning gm they shoulda lost to Minnesota in WCard rnd.
OLine a shambles and MLynch gone.

Beginning to see the trend? Arizona has taken over the NFCWest.

Doesn’t matter when the FA market is thin at o-line and ya’ll going to be over paying Bennett next season because he’ll be crying he wants more $$.

  34. Seahawks are in the bottom 10 in cap space in 2017, and in the bottom 3 in 2018. Those numbers are meaningless. They only count players presently under contract for those years. They have guys to pay as well. Don’t make it out like they’re in great shape. Get with the program, instead of posting ‘cheater’ on every Pats thread because you can’t get over the fact the Seahawks lost the SBowl to the Pats.

    ___________

Except that all of their core players are locked into contracts for the next 2+ years. They are absolutely in great shape. You can keep closing your eyes hoping and wishing that the Seahawks will completely fall apart, but Schneider’s the best in the game and has this team built to compete for at least the next 3 years. Given his track record as GM, the Seahawks likely won’t fall off after the current core of players’ contracts expire either.

  36. No one actually knows what the salary cap numbers will be in 2017 and 2018. But what they do know is that the core of the Seahawks team is under contract through those seasons and some of them even through the 2019. And best of all, or most importantly, they are almost all under 27 right now. Not sure what you people are thinking or looking at when you say their run is over. There is no evidence of that anywhere. In many ways they’re just getting started.

Now, it will be interesting to watch what they do when that time comes. As these current players start to get older and younger players they have now start to reach that time when they are looking for their big paydays, there will definitely be some decisions to make. But that is at the minimum 2 years away and for many of them 3 or 4. I have every confidence though, that John and Pete will be able to navigate that challenge as well as they’ve done with everything that has come their way so far. Sorry to say it Cardinals, Rams, and 49er fans; the Seahawks are not going away. Your teams are going to be dealing with the Seahawks playing at championship level for many years to come.

  37. I really didn’t care that much about the Cardinals( not nearly as annoying as San Francisco fans) but I’m starting to get sick and tired of the johnny-come-lately Cardinal fans claiming they own the Division after one season it’d be nice to put them back in their place this year.

Since the Seahawks moved to the NFC West they have completely owned that Division and won it more than twice as much as the next guy.

  38. Seattle blown out by Carolina in the playoffs?

Football games are timed for 60 minutes across 4 quarters

At the end of 60 minutes and 4 quarters, Seattle lost by 7 points and outgained Carolina by +101 yards

    At Carolina

    This constitutes a blow out?

  39. Ever notice that the same clown haters who’ve for the past 4 years have been predicting Seattle won’t even make the playoffs are wrong EVERY year?

  40. Welcome to the NFL Seahawks fans. I used to root for them in the 1rst 16 yrs of irrelavence. I liked the uniforms. After a little spurt, they were irrelevant for another 6 yrs. Then most of you jumped on board.

Does 31-0 halftime score in a road playoff gm against the #1 seed constitute a blowout? Heck yeah! Spin it anyway you want, homers.

Seahawks have all the core players sown up? Here’s a partial list of players that are gonna want more money in the next couple yrs:

    CAvril
    MBennett
    CChancellor
    Hauska
    TRawls
    RSherman
    EThomas

That’s the reality. You guys are novices, I understand, but keep screaming at the games.

  41. Remember when you said (8 days ago) that the lack of an extension for John and Pete was very problematic for the Hawks?

    LOL

  42. Everything’s right on schedule. You act like John and Pete don’t have a plan.

    Chancellor and Bennett next year.
    Thomas and Sherman in 2018.
Wilson, Wagner, and Wright in 2019.

Others mixed on a long the way. Plus the young guys that will be ready for their big deal. It will be a challenge but that’s why they paid Schneider. He’s pretty good at this stuff.

  43. Schneider is the best in the business, I already said that. But, sometimes you lose some guys you don’t want to lose. The only point I was trying to make is when you have a lot of good players, like the Seahawks and the Pats do, you just can’t sign them all. There’s not enough money to go around. It’s not about, don’t worry, there’s a plan, there’s cap room down the road. It’s all roses, That’s what steeler fans say. The Pats traded a 12.5 sack guy t0 Arizona(you guys must be thrilled) for a bust and a draft pick. They have other guys they’d rather pay. Then there’s holdouts, guys that think they’r underpaid, etc.
