Jets sign Ryan Fitzpatrick to one-year, $12 million deal

AP

The Jets and their starting quarterback finally have a deal.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has signed a one-year, $12 million deal to return to the Jets for the 2016 season, according to multiple reports.

This ends a long negotiation that spanned the entire offseason and got contentious at times, with Fitzpatrick seemingly upset that the Jets weren’t willing to give him the kind of money that quarterbacks who had lesser seasons last year — like Brock Osweiler and Sam Bradford — received.

In the end, however, they’ve come to an agreement that will bring Fitzpatrick back, and put back together a passing game that was surprisingly effective in 2016. The Jets think they can compete for a playoff spot this season, and now they have their leader.

  1. Looks like it only took a couple snaps of Geno leading the ones to get the Jets to pony up the money

  2. That’s great news! Now the Jets can remain in playoff contention all year long…until Fitz throws multiple interceptions in week 17 and they stay home (once again) for the playoffs.

  3. I really don’t get why jets fans are so excited you saw the real fitz week 17 vs the bills that’s who he is. Now is he better than geno? Sure but it’s Ryan Fitzpatrick

  4. Wasn’t this their original offer? Fitz overplayed his hand. When 31 other teams weren’t calling and you have $12 million sitting there waiting for you, you better go get it.

    Good for the Jets for standing firm and not competing with themselves and not overpay him.

  5. Fitzpatrick has that magic where at the end of game or season when the chips are down, he folds like a cheap suit, lawn chair or (insert your favorite). It is called doing a ‘Fitzpatrick’ , sorry Jets fans.

  6. I’m not a Jet’s fan, but I think this was a good football decision.

    Geno may need counseling though. LOL

    Anyway, I think it strengthens their team.

  7. JETS! What’s that spell?

    B-L-I-N-K

    Gang Green needed Fitzy more than he needed them.

    Go on oh, bearded one…..go on.

  8. FINALLY.

    Its the right thing to do for the club, considering the log jam they have of young potential behind him, but they are a super old team and they can rebuild later.

    *WHEW* Thats all I got. This topic has been beaten into oblivion ad nauseum for one of the most boring, irrelevant teams in the NFL.

    But we had to have this conversation. Good talk.

  9. Well, here’s my theory. As soon as Fitzpatrick saw that Foles was going to be available, he knew that if the Jets picked him up, Foles would then be the backup to Geno and ipso facto, Fitzpatrick would be left out in the stubborn cold altogether all by himself. So he knew he better sign before the Jets picked up Foles. Obviously no one knows for sure if this is true, but it’s my theory and I believe it. Fitzpatrick is obviously gambling on himself, which is fine by me. Let’s say he has a good year and gets the Jets into the playoffs. Well, then it’s fine by me to pay him the big bucks after doing so. If he doesn’t get the Jets into the playoffs, then I don’t want him in 2017 anyway!

    Completely agree. What is Fitz thinking. If he’s signing this deal why not just do it in May.

    Pretty sure the Jets put that deal on the table a long time ago.

  12. But, but, but… Tylawpick6 said the Jets are in cap hell…my gosh, how did the Executive of the Year do it??!! (Again)

  13. Let’s see – Fitzi was originally offered 3 years @ $24 million with $15 million guaranteed …
    NOW – he signs a 1 year $12 million deal ?
    Sorry Geno, somebody finally broke & it wasn’t the Jets!

    Nope. The Jets original offer was 3 years at $8 million per. In fact Fitz offered to play on a 1 year $12 million deal weeks ago and the Jets flat out rejected it. So I’m not sure why you are congratulating the Jets for standing firm when it was Fitz that stood firm.

  15. They have a playoff caliber team and I get they want to go with a guy that just had some success with that team, but Fitzpatrick had his best year at age 33 and that still wasn’t enough to get them to the playoffs, in fact he threw them out of the playoffs. He’s not going to get better at this stage of his career. At least it’s only for one year but it feels like a wasted year.

  16. After all that from the Jets front office: the hard posturing, the media smear campaign that obviously came straight from Woody Johnson, the laughable story that Geno Smith was ready to shine…

    After alllll that Fitzpatrick holds his ground and gets the exact same contract he asked for 4 months ago. Jets fans applauding Maccagnan for this: good luck. He cost their starting QB a whole spring worth of work, didn’t save a cent, and looks like an idiot going forward in contract negotiations.

  17. This is why they’re the Jests.
    At least Marshall and Decker will have good fantasy seasons while their team misses the playoffs again.

  18. A Niner fan, but living deep in Bills country. Fitzpatrick in a nutshell is exactly what he was week 17 last year. A turnover machine who screwed the pooch when he was needed the most. Jets overpaid

  19. check their books. they don’t have 12 million in cap space and their rookies remain unsigned. something smells.

    does this mean we can finally call geno bust a bust?

    lmao

  20. The fact that the signing of this career backup is actually garnering this much attention is an indication that the sporting news cycle is slooooow AND the Jets are horrible.

  21. and now if he does well this season we will go through the same thing next year

  22. At least he’s better than Mark The Butt Fumble Sanchez, though.
    _____________________________________
    Sanchez takes his team to the playoffs. Your boy Fitz chokes and stays home. Am I lying?

  23. Makes the Jets a better, deeper team. Geno may end up winning he job anyway. Pick up where they left off last year and didn’t overpay. McAganan scores again.

  24. After reading a number of comments from commenters that seem to believe that Fitzpatrick blinked I’ve come to the conclusion that most of my fellow citizens have the attention span of 2 year old and memory that doesn’t extend beyond a few days.

    The Jets initial offer was 3 years $24 million…$8 million per year.

    Fitz and the Jets went back and forth with Fitz finally giving his final bottom line offer of 1 year $12 million.

    The Jets according to reports on this very site reported they were not interested in a 1 year $12 million offer. You guys can literally search on Fitzgerald on this site’s search and read those articles. Yet so many are on here commenting with authority that Fitzgerald blinked….what??? Come on people you can do better.

  25. The Broken Jaw heard ’round NY!!!! lol

    Fitzpatrick has been the only Jets player worth watching for years. T hey are lucky they signed him

  26. Look at all these Patsies fans who were claiming Maccagnan was dumb for not signing him but are now claiming were dumb for signing him. This deal was on the table four months ago go look around for that information it shouldn’t be that hard. Oh well I guess it’s time to go back to conspiracy theories about the NFL rigging the game for the Jets in spite of the Pats. Even though New England has dominated the division for years LOL.

  27. Patskrieg-
    Get your facts straight. Fits originally asked for 35mil over 2 years. He reduced his request to 12 mil just 3 weeks ago and the Jets offered 10. They didn’t have the cap room at the time, but since the Wilkerson signing, they freed up an additional 6 mil. That’s why the deal just got done. Its not like they traded an all pr0 DE with 15 sacks last year for a bust of a OG.
    That was BB.

  28. Everyone saying he choked in the last week, he did. But they also werent even in contention without him. He won many games for them last year.

  29. He was offered $12 million in year one on a three-year contract. He would only be making 6 million for each of the last two years. He turned that down. He was willing to take a one-year $12 million deal but the Jets balk at that a couple of months ago. I guess they changed their minds.

  30. Schefter reported that the 3 year deal offered to Fitz had the guaranteed dollars bumped up from $12M to $15-16M, so Fitz did compromise a few dollars to secure the one-year term.

  31. As a Jets fan I was secretly hoping this wouldn’t happen. With the schedule being so tough this year I don’t think Fitz will make much of a difference as far as playoff fate. That being said I rather have seen the Jets evaluate Geno and perhaps Petty to see if they have their future QB. With Fitz in the fold now the Jets are in QB limbo for one more year

  32. After all that from the Jets front office: the hard posturing, the media smear campaign that obviously came straight from Woody Johnson, the laughable story that Geno Smith was ready to shine… What media smear campaign are you talking about? Neither side said anything to the media.

  33. check their books. they don’t have 12 million in cap space and their rookies remain unsigned. something smells.———————————————————————– All their rookies are signed. Last one was signed earlier today prior to Fitz deal.

  34. The deal is potentially 1 year 15Million. Its 12 M base with 3M in incentives, which he has good WR so he could reach many. Im not sure why PFT left out the incentive portion. He wanted 15M and he got it. I think he won this standoff.

    NYTIMES:
    Just hours after the Jets opened training camp on Wednesday without the unsigned quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, the two sides agreed on a one-year deal worth $12 million and an additional $3 million in incentives, according to multiple reports.

  35. If he can produce on the field this year, then next year he can force the Jets to use the franchi—-

    Hahahahahaha

    Couldn’t event finish that one.

  36. Love the grappelo second best qb in the division comment. Once the reins are passed, and it will happen in the next 2 years, we’ll see if jimmy remembers his name after hits from Suh, Dareus and Wilkerson lol

    no.. the Jets wouldn’t do a one year $12M deal before. Fitzpatrick didn’t cave in, the Jets finally gave him the deal he asked for months ago..

  38. 12 million 21 TDS 17 ints. Mark it down Fitz always follows a good season with a horrible one. He showed who he was in week 17 with the season on the line. I don’t get why the Jets don’t just give Geno a chance see what he can do.

  39. Woody Johnson figured it would be better to avoid losing football games this year, as he fully expects to get boat raced by the Dems this fall.

  40. This cements the Jets season as another one down the toilet.

    This guy will give you false hope during the early parts of the season, but late in the year and late in games, he will ALWAYS fail.

    This is who Fitz is. Anyone who expects different has much to learn.

  41. Weird. Wasn’t the NYJ earlier offer more substantial? Does he expect to throw for 5k and have 40 TDs then cash in? Next story will be how he fired his agent.

  42. Sanchez takes his team to the playoffs. Your boy Fitz chokes and stays home. Am I lying?
    ___

    The last time Sanchez was in the playoffs was 2010.

  43. Grats Fitz! Jets finally came around to doing what is best for their team and he isnt tied to a longer term cheaper per year deal. Their cap issues are not his fault.

    You jets fans complaining, would you rather have Geno run the team? Really? Or the other “real” choices available?? Namath is a bit old guys! ;D

    As long suffering Jets fan I’m actually disappointed they brought him back this is not a stop gap but a dead end.
    ————————–
    I can understand long-suffering Jets’ fans’ mixed feelings but at 33 Fitz is hardly a dead-end instead of a stop-gap! He’s got potential for another 2-3 years of keeping the Jets in Wildcard contention, which gives Bowles more time to find and nurture a future franchise QB that fits Bowles’ style – Geno clearly isn’t that guy (at least right now) or else the Jets would have told Fitz to carry on playing golf.

  45. Yes! We signed a journeyman qb who threw pick after pick to kill his teams chances in a playoff clinching game. Who’s ready to party.

  46. …..great signing…..now the JETS can have their standard 8-8 season……….12 million for a old QB?…why?….give your Bryce a shot….NFL football is all about YOUTH.

  47. Everyone saying he choked in the last week, he did. But they also werent even in contention without him. He won many games for them last year.

    aaand now.. Foles to Denver

    ditka: if you are right, and john elway goes into this season defending the lombardi with the eagles’ two quarterbacks from 2014, he better have one hell of a defense….

  49. I think the Nick Foles moving the contract forward are a little overrated because one it is only a one year (show me) deal and because two, he is, you know, Nick Foles.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    No the original offer was 3 years at a 12 year average. This way Fitz can hit the market again next year and try to cash in once again. . .
  51. Good job Fitzy. You knew the Jets would fold and held all the cards. Play well and you will get a job offer from a real team next year.
    If Ryan Fitzpatrick is worth 12 million dollars a year, I’m Batman.
    —————————–
    I agree he’s not worth that much, but in a era where QB’s are in short supply he’s worth 12 mil to the NFL, just look at some of the salaries of these average QB. Cousins a perfect example…
  53. Reasons why this is a good signing:
    1. Fitzpatrick kept the team in playoff contention until week 17 last year, usually the Jets are out after week 8.
    2. Greatest statistical season for a Jets quarterback last season, returning to a familiar offensive scheme in which he’s been successful and comfortable playing in.
    3. Similar/improved cast surrounding him (Forte, Clady, Lee, etc) gives Jets a chance to keep improving within continuity.
    4. Proven chemistry with Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. He threw a ton of touchdowns last year, something the Jets historically don’t do well.
    5. Track record of professionalism; Petty and Hackenberg can learn how to be a pro from him,
    6. Fitz keeps the offense moving downfield, this keeps the defense fresh (Geno is the 3 and out king)
    7. If he gets hurt or plays poorly, he’s only signed for 1 year, possibly there will be viable QB options next year
    The Jets took a huge step forward last year. They were actually fun to watch. They scored points. They built chemistry. I believe that chemistry is going to be stronger this year. Regardless of the tougher schedule, this Jets team will be up to the task. They have the talent on paper. Fitzpatrick gives them the best chance to win this season; that makes NYJ a more attractive landing spot for free agents. Overall, I believe this signing is a net positive for the Jets across the board.
  54. Jul 27, 2016 8:00 PM – nflfan1 says: The fact that the signing of this career backup is actually garnering this much attention …
    Jealous? No. You Patsie fans don’ realize the deserved abuse your team gets is a direct correlation to the douchiness of your fellow fans. Patriot fans have almost ruined PFT and many other sports talk boards whining about Goodell/ Brady in just about EVERY SINGLE THREAD on the boards.
    Jealous? No. Sick of you? Yes.
  56. Jul 27, 2016 11:29 PM – bluenose1965 says: What am I missing? He was rubbish in Houston.
    What you’re missing is that $12MM is rubbish pay for a starting QB beyond their rookie deal.
    That said, this is a win for Fitzpatrick, far better than the Jets offer of 3 yrs/$24MM/$15MM guaranteed. If he plays average or better, he’ll come out far ahead – if he plays poorly and gets cut, he’s only out $3MM.
    Sorry, I disagree. It’s ironic that you would criticize others for not reading when it seems to me to be the opposite. Yes, the Jets did not want to offer Fitzpatrick a one-year deal because of the large cap hit the Jets would have taken. HOWEVER, after the Wilkerson contract was finalized, the Jets would be able to offer a one-year deal to Fitzpatrick because the Wilkerson deal freed up enough money for a Fitzpatrick one-year deal. I think you are the one who could do better.
