Dan Snyder pays for funeral of Redskins’ super fan “Chief Zee”

Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder stepped up to cover the funeral expenses of one of the team’s biggest supporters.

According to Carol Maloney of NBC 4 in Washington D.C., Snyder was the anonymous donor that paid for the funeral of Zema Williams, a.k.a. “Chief Zee.”

Williams, who passed away earlier this month, would attend games in full Native American-style headdresses while decked out in team colors.

Snyder isn’t exactly the most revered figure in the D.C. sports scene. The Redskins have won just one playoff games since Snyder assumed ownership of the franchise in 1999. He’s meddled with personnel decisions, had eight different head coaches in 17 years and been involved in several questionable lawsuits during his ownership of the team.

However, the gesture to cover the funeral costs of one of the team’s most visible fans is a nice one to make.

  1. Dan Snyder leaking his name to the press as the donor is a super Dan Snyder thing to do.

  2. Good classy move….IF he wasn’t the one that leaked his own name to the press as paying for the funeral. If he is the one then he basically just paid to get try and get some good press.

  3. I’m not a huge Snyder fan, but I’m glad he did this. At the same time, it would have been nice for this to remain truly anonymous. Hopefully even Snyder feels that way too.

  4. Wow. As much as I’ve laughed at the Skins over the years having to have this guy as their owner I have to say that this was classy Dan.
I’m a Giants fan and have been to a number of games in RFK and FedEx in all my Giants gear and have had the pleasure of getting into the double choke hold with Chief Zee a couple of times and I will always remember those times and they will always bring a smile to my face. Win or lose Chief Zee made it more fun!

RIP Chief Zee and thanks for the memories,

    Dan, way to go!

  5. Skins fan. I saw Chief Zee once at a game and said “Let’s party.” (I don’t even really know why.) He shook his tomahawk at my face. It was awesome.

  6. The yellow bellied liberals will slam Snyder for this, too.
And isn’t it ironic that a black man could dress up as an Indian to root for the Redskins for almost 40 years and no one blinked?

  7. To those of you cracking on Snyder for paying for the funeral, let it go. If you didn’t pay for it yourself, shut up.

Cheif Zee was loved by the Redskins and the fans. It was a nice gesture, anonymous or not.

    RIP Zee.

  8. It was nice of Snyder to do this, but i don’t know why the Media had to know who paid for Chief Zees funeral. Anonymous means tje donor doesn’t want to be known. Right??!!!?

Aaah yes a member of the GOP, the party of Trump, attempting to inject race into anything and everything. Shocking. Your party nominated the exact person you deserve as your candidate for president. I hope you’re enjoying all the shame and embarrassment associated with having such a buffoon as your leader

Substitute “Democrats” and “Hillary” and the former makes just as much sense.

Both of you are clown shoes. Show some freakin’ respect to Chief Zee

  12. I think most of Snyder’s bad rep is media induced, has he made some bad decisions as an owner? Yes he has, but what owner hasn’t, as he’s grown into his ownership he’s learned.

The guy just wants to win for the fans and the DMV, sure early on he went about it the wrong way and was impatient at times, but you have to appreciate an owner who’s willing to spend to win, unlike the guys who own the other 3 sports team in the DMV, anyway back to Snyder, he’s done a multitude of good deeds in the area including fixing football fields and providing upgraded equipment to local HS’s in the inner city and or where the locals don’t have the funds.

  13. Chief Zee was originally Cowboy Ray.:)

    Uhhhh, no…
Cowboy (crazy) ray passed in 2007..
    2 different guys…..
They would always meet up in the stands and “battle” each other.
If you don’t know about it, don’t talk about it.

  14. I remember watching those little battles between Cowboy Ray and Chief Zee. If that happened today, the PC world would lose it’s mind!

  15. I am a super skins fan, always have been. But I was wondering how Chief Zee afforded season tickets on the 50 yard line, but his estate didn’t have enough cash to bury him.

    RIP Chief. Nice move Dan.
p.s. I think you are a great owner. Everything you have ever done for the Skins was because of your deep desire to win. I really believe that.
