Ex-NFL player Antonio Armstrong and wife killed by their teen son

Former NFL linebacker Antonio Armstrong and his wife were shot and killed by their teenage son in their home in Houston on Friday, police say.

Police were called to the Armstrongs’ home around 1:30 a.m. in response to shots fired, the Houston Chronicle reports. Dawn Armstrong died at the scene and Antonio Armstrong died in the hospital a few hours later. KTRK reports that the couple’s 16-year-old son has been charged with murder. One of the couple’s two other children was at home at the time but was not harmed.

Relatives described the Armstrongs as a loving family and say they can’t imagine what could have led to such a situation.

“They kept them busy and they supported them in everything that they did. There was not any mark that they missed with their children,” a cousin of Dawn Armstrong told the Houston Chronicle. “There was nothing that even could possibly have justified this situation. This doesn’t even make sense.”

Antonio Armstrong was an All-American linebacker at Texas A&M and a sixth-round draft pick of the 49ers in 1995. He played briefly for the Dolphins and Rams and then spent four seasons in the Canadian Football League. In retirement he has worked as a personal trainer and was well known in his community as a volunteer youth coach.

  1. Tragic … May they rest in peace.

It will come out this kid was mentally ill, I bet. When a child uses a gun on his parents no one can understand it.

May the other children find peace and harmony in their lives someday. They are going to need lots of love from any remaining family.

  2. Seems everyone loved Antonio. No one had a cross word to say about him.

Really starting to regret reading the morning news. Just a constant reminder of how destructive we are as a species.

  3. If Antonio and his wife had guns of their own they could have defended themselves, right NRA?

  4. This is just plain Horrible. Mother and Father of two other children killed by their stupid brother. Rest in Peace.

  5. The local news is reporting that the kid may have done this in retaliation from being grounded from his car. Very sad indeed.

  7. Whatever happened to this boy, drugs or mental illness, which I’m sure one of the 2 is responsible for him snapping, we have some serious problems in this country.

Right, because a 16 year old getting angry at his parents and shooting them to death because there is a gun in the house qualifies as mental illness, right? The ease with which a person (even a child) can kill another person has NOTHING to do with their proclivity to commit murder, it’s ALL mental illness, right?
What if it turns out that this kid never had a single abnormal mental episode in his entire life . . . is he still considered mentally ill?
Apparently, owning a gun doesn’t just make you a cop, it also makes you a licensed psychiatrist.

  9. Some how I don’t imagine any amount of thinking will provide a human light for the cold dark vacuum this child has gained access to .
All the answers that were once warm and friendly family members are now subjects of history , with all the trouble that led to decisions in that last instance , now face a future without sharing their warmth and forgiveness , only our simple , blundering , thoughts .
Pity , sorrow , grief , all to real to express , all to small to fill , an unimaginable breach of all that remains .
    Rest in Peace …

  10. Awful this kid deserves everything he has coming to him. I can’t imagine what the other two have to go through with losing their parents like that especially your own sibling doing it.

Sadly, I was wondering if something as stupid as this might have been the cause. What a loser. From everything I’ve read they were great parents and this kid kills them because they grounded him. I don’t think he’ll have that problem again. He’s probably gonna do a LOOONG stretch in adult prison. Honestly, if a 16-year old kills his parents over something as trivial as being grounded then I hope they give him life. He has no right to live in a (formerly) civilized society endangering everyone else because they may accidentally bump into him (aka Aaron Hernandez).

  12. @realfootballfan – The serious problem we have is the instantaneous assuming of facts, i.e., being sure drugs or mental illness are involved, with zero knowledge of what actually happened.

  13. Its a sad comment on this country that there are people downvoting simple posts of condolences and sadness about this incident.

Shame on you. You are disgusting people to do that. You had better hope when your life takes a turn for the worse that the people around you have a heck of lot more compassion than you do.

  14. to whatjusthappened

no one want’s your guns…but be real…if it was a knife the kid had they’d probably be still alive and his life wouldn’t be ruined. the second amendment didn’t plan for all these pistols…so easy to get a hold of do something stupid with… of that you can be sure

  15. What the hell is wrong with these kids???? Where is the respect and honor for your parents???? My mother could cuss me and slap me in front of everybody but this thought would never enter my mind!!!!!

  16. “if it was a knife the kid had they’d probably be still alive and his life wouldn’t be ruined”

Uh wrong. Any blade longer than 4″ can kill you with one shot to the heart or any number of other places. Even shorter blades are very deadly if you know what to do with them.

You can hope they might still be alive but an awful lot of people are killed with knives so a blanket statement like that is invalid.

  17. While police are NOT RELEASING the motive. Multiple people on Facebook are claiming that the boy was UPSET that his father refused to buy him an expensive pair of Nike Jordan sneakers.

  18. the black community glorifies guns and killing people. They rap about killing people, they posts pics of kids with guns acting ‘gangsta.: This shouldnt come to a surprise for anyone, its typical black on black crime. Even if its their own parents. Like obama said, being part of a gang is like a family and that is stronger than blood family.

Here we go again… If people engage their brain as much as they engage their mouth there’d be a lot less problems than we have today.

But of course, that won’t happen. The only way people can kill is with a gun. Take all the guns away and crime in the United States will go away just like France and Germany. Remind me to make another donation to the NRA

  20. rickochey…..what is this ignorant comment about? When white kids kill their parents do you say that white on white crime is part of the problem? This child killed his parents the same way that other white teens have killed….they have a sense of entitlement and get angry when told no. I am so sick of the racist comments…..you cannot put all black people into one group. If you do that, then say all whites are serial killers, rapists or mass shooters. You need to seek help for your problems instead of trying to spread racist lies!

  21. I bet everyone here $1 that the lad was on a commonly prescribed psychotropic medication. Y’all can send your dollars to my paypal.

I don’t really appreciate the original sarcastic comment in the face of the tragedy about the NRA, however I don’t think the left has a monopoly on politicizing tragedies to push agendas. Yes, the 2nd amendment is a constitutional right but that does not mean that it is making the general public safer or that this was even the original intent of that right. It could be argued that when supporters of the NRA say something like”if only the victim had a gun” or “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” that this is also politicizing the issue by implying that the only solution to be “safe” is more guns when public safety and gun rights may not be linked at all or have any intention of being linked.

I don’t own a gun but really have nothing against people that do as long as that gun is handled responsibly and not used with criminal intent. The name calling does irk me because it is not lunacy to want a safer society, people just have different views of achieving this. You can’t argue with the constitutional right to bear arms but you cannot argue that 100% of gun violence is caused by gun owners either. I didn’t say all gun owners but people who do not own guns absolutely do not cause it.

  23. Why is it that some people want to instantly jump to conclusions long before all the facts have been gathered ? At this point, why is irrelevant. This is one of the biggest negatives concerning ” instant knowledge ” people jump beyond grief and empathy, pointing fingers and making accusations. We may be living in the amazing age of modern technology, but as human beings, we are losing our ability to see the bigger picture, and it’s sad.

  24. Just another example, that culture will never become human because they can’t control their jungle attitude and anger and that is because they don’t learn. In the best homes and in the ghetto, they all the same. Mind full of hate, the sad part, they were not born that way, they did have to learn that from the parent.

  25. My heart and condolences to the other children and family.

Sad, very sad my this young man find peace in his soul and to the others siblings to seek professional help; Amen.

May Mr and Mrs. Armstrong Rest In Peace…

  26. sad situation, but where is the black lives matter hypocrites, why aren’t they screaming from the hilltops about this.

  27. @cardinalsfan20,
Yep, because killing somebody else when your life wasn’t in danger doesn’t qualify as mentally ill in your world. I’d hate to see what does.

  28. harrisonhits2
…as an ED doc I can tell you I know what I’m talking about when it comes to gun death vs knife deaths. I’m sure your a ninja and all and can quickly dispatch your foes with you four inch blade. But I think maybe you should actually look up the numbers before you decide to educate the general public. very few people die from knifings a year. MANY, MANY people die from pistols.
responsible people should have the right to own a gun. but because of ZERO gun control. a 16 y.o kid can get his hands on one w/ little effort. remember columbine…they bought them at kmart…
    ps go steelers

  29. …and also as a black man…some of the stuff your saying is just hurtful…really badbob1…jungle attitude…never become human…what a troll you are, dude
and you justify the belief that black people have that the deck is stacked

  30. When GOD is absent, satan fills the void. Too many have turned their backs on the LORD and then wonder why evil occurs.

  31. footballluv……………….it’s called the “Black Market’. you see, alcohol was outlawed and it was impossible to get any, right? Guns are forbidden in Germany and France, that’s why they haven’t had any mass shootings. Chicago and DC too. St. Louis, a few other places. But, in Plano Texas and Keenesaw, Georgia, where just about everyone has a firearm, no one ever gets shot. Plano is the safest place in the US. Virtually crime free. 97% compliance with gun ownership and NRA support. Please explain.

  32. Sad. Good man and woman gone. Like with Lanza and Griego, if you got a “borderline”kid, LOCK UP your guns if you’re not carrying them.

NRA would say make sure your kids take the Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Course (not sure if they tell kids it’s wrong to shoot non-threatening parents and people), but just to be safe EVERYONE should exercise their 2nd Amendment right and carry a gun just in case your kid wigs out next time you ask him to take out the trash or mow the lawn.

  33. catquick…
I don’t want to outlaw guns; I’m a hunter. but alcohol and drugs are regulated far more than firearms. I’ve been through Plano…it ain’t no Chicago.
apples to oranges in both of your arguments. the problem is no one wants to move even slightly toward moderation.
pistols are death machines (and yea I’m biased being in the ED…but you would be too)

  34. “Any blade longer than 4″ can kill you with one shot to the heart or any number of other places.”

And the person you are killing (let’s say a former NFL lineman) is just going to let you stab them? THIS is why gun owners can no longer be trusted to debate this issue. They seem to have completely forgotten that the REASON they love guns so much is because it takes the guesswork out of murder. Is the person stronger than me? Faster than me? Does he/she have friends nearby? How fast can i get away after i kill them?

All these are question a person asks themselves if they want to kill with a knife or a blunt object. NO ONE who plans to shoot someone with any sort of gun worries about these things. And when gun nuts want to talk about the superior killing power of guns? “Uh, you know . . . it’s really no different than a knife in the aorta!”

WELL THEN USE A KNIFE FOR SELF DEFENSE, YOU IDIOTS! ! !

  35. Facts are Facts :
Guns don’t go “Bang” by themselves –
it ALWAYS has & ALWAYS will – take the human element to MAKE it preform acts either Honorably or Cowardly depending on the situation.
And YES – for all the anti-gun zealots out there –
IF he didn’t have access to it in the first place, the story might be different, BUT it appears reading more of the story
online – this kid was troubled, so unless someone has a crystal ball & can read into this kids head – it’s doubtful anybody could have foretold what was gonna happen.

  36. 16 – that’s about the time a childe starts to rebel. Most do the “normal” rebelling, if at all. I guess this one childe took it too far – way too far. ’tis 2 bad.

  37. Footballluv…….there is no bargaining with a civil right. Its carved in stone, not living, breathing. Plano is no Chicago, but who runs the places i pointed out? Thats not an accident. Its an “on purpose” to get people lile you to let your guard down and empower government in a country founded on as little government as possible. Name 5 things you can do without ANY government involvement?

  38. catquick…no need to be personal or talk about people about “like me.” I don’t know you. you don’t know me. I wish in this political environment people would just talk about this issue. I wish people wouldn’t use the word lunatic or zealot when people have an opinion that differs from their’s.
I would argue I have a civil right not to be surround by pistols. I recall the document you’re trying to discuss concerning civil rights, not giving said rights to blacks or women. ethos, countries, people…they evolve, they improve, they refine. or perhaps we should just go back to feudal law…screw the magna carta.

  39. anyway…I’ll step out I don’t want this to be my personal argument…but hey maybe we can make it the most posted…then people will really start to chime in.

  40. Football luv – If it had been a knife, they likely would still be dead. Knives are just as deadly, if not sometimes more so, as a gun.
