DeAndre Hopkins is ending his holdout

Well, that didn’t last long.

Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins will end his two-day holdout and report for training camp, according to Tania Ganguli of ESPN.com.

“I too am disappointed that the Texans’ organization has elected not to enter into contract negotiations to secure my future as a Texan,” Hopkins told Ganguli in a statement. “I have expressed my sincere position regarding my contract status and with sound mind have expressed my [stance)]to the Texans’ organization. My focus also is on the 2016 season and to help my team reach our ultimate goal. Having said that, I am returning to the Houston Texans to play for a [Super Bowl] in Houston, Texas. I will be holding a 3 p.m. press conference at Reliant Stadium today. We are excited about returning to the team and grind this camp.”

Ganguli notes that the press conference won’t be happening on Sunday, and that Hopkins is expected to speak on Monday.

It appears, based on the statement, that the team refused to negotiate, and that Hopkins simply decided not to dig in. With $40,000 per day in fines, a $445,000 roster bonus that would have been forfeited if he had stayed out beyond August 4, the potential forfeiture of part (and eventually all) of a $981,000 signing bonus proration, and a base salary of only $1 million this year, Hopkins eventually would have been playing for free in 2016, if he hadn’t gotten a new contract.

If he gets nothing in return for showing up, it’s fair to ask whether Hopkins has decided not to hold out, but to hold in. Hamstring injuries, concussions, whatever. There are ways that players can make their displeasure known without exposing themselves to financial ramifications.

Unless the Texans have committed to negotiating a fair extension in exchange for the prompt end to the holdout (and it appears that they haven’t), it makes sense to pay attention to his health and his overall effort, with two years to go on a contract that he already has outplayed.

  1. just a shot across the bow to get the attention of the front office. can’t really blame him.

  2. The way the league has negotiated holdout don’t work anymore. A player can give half effort and get “injured” like Desean Jackson if he’s not happy with his deal.

  3. At $40,000 a day, I’m not sure why anyone would ever holdout if they have a contract in place? He stayed out for one day to express his displeasure, but anything more than that would be stupid.

  4. What makes the Texans look bad,is they say oh we don’t renegotiate. Well you redid Watts contract with 2 years, and just did Rick smith the GM,IMO teams can’t do that. If your not wanting to renegotiate that’s fine then don’t do it. Now if it’s 1 of the 1 were your redoing contract that’s different and players know that. For example the 1 thing I have always liked about Baalke my teams GM is he doesn’t negotiate with hold outs and doesn’t redo contracts unless the rookie contract. He never has and so we don’t get hold outs for that reason. Gore was last 1 like 3 years ago,he didn’t get anything. It’s very clear Hopkins has out played his contract. I don’t know Texans cap but for a top 10 WR being paid 1 million. Is a crime I know these guys our over paid Ect. But in football world he is needed new contract and if Texans don’t give it to him. Other players will take notice and it will become harder and harder to get contracts signed by players.

  5. Like I said yesterday.. More like BO Hopkins no balls to stand his ground for more that 24 hrs chickenshyte Texan

  6. Players need to just play out rookie contracts and teams need to stop signing their players to long term deals before their rookie deal is up to keep these players from holding out during their rookie deals. Also they need to get rid of the 5th year option and franchise tags.

  7. The player’s agent, Tom Condumb, is also Sam Bradford’s agent. He probably thought the Texans don’t read out-of- town newspapers.

  8. Hopkins better watch how he ”gets injured.” His workplace is less than two miles from some of the greatest medical institutions on earth, and whatever ”injury” he thinks he sustains, there are at least 3 or 4 specialists in that field nearby. Any. Injury. Just name it. Or fake it.

  9. Your paying an unknown qb 18 million and one of the best players in the league 1 mill?

    That’s criminal.

  10. Love the dysfunction within the Texans’ organization. Enjoy the $18M/year QB you guys signed. You’ll be regretting that by midseason if not sooner. Lol.

  11. Way to be a man for once in your life. Like I wrote yesterday, honor your contract, you signed it. Keep your pie hole shut and be awesome again this year and get a big deal after that.

Be a bum, be sub-par this year and don’t get the big deal, wash out of the league and go bag grocers for the rest of your life. #yourchoice

  12. The league is broken when an unproven bum like Bros Ockweiler is making close to $20 million a year and Hopkins, a top-5 WR, has to play for a mere fraction of that.

  13. I’ have tickets to some games, but I don’t know where reliant stadium is. Better Google it.. Welcome back Nuk!!

  14. Yeah, he wrote that…. eye roll. Dude couldn’t spell cat if I spotted him the c and the t.

Yeah, he wrote that…. eye roll. Dude couldn’t spell cat if I spotted him the c and the t.

Dude can spell All-Pro while spotting you 3 stooges throwing him the ball.

  16. Deandre, I too told my boss to stick it by not showing up for two days. Told them I was not coming back until I get what I feel is what my skills are worth. He fired me after my lips stopped moving. Your antics are a great example to follow.

  17. I’m surprised he did this.
    Whats the point?
Either hold out for real, or show up.
Now he looks weak and like a wimp.

  18. Osweiler goes 5-2 in a four year career. 11/6 TD to INT while being supported by a great defense…$72 million. Hopkins never misses a game in his career, averages nearly 1k yards per season with career backups throwing to him, not a blink. Now they may work something out or he holds a grudge and leaves in two years. Hopefully they hook the guy up.

  19. “What a mess that team that is.”

“Love the dysfunction within the Texans’ organization. Enjoy the $18M/year QB you guys signed. You’ll be regretting that by midseason if not sooner. Lol.”

Lol Ok, you idiots keep telling yourselves those things, and maybe some day, you’ll actually believe them.
Going to really enjoy watching the Colts & the Jags eat the Texans’ dust this season. The Titans, too, but that’s a given.

  20. Not only did the Texans grossly overpay Oz, they signed him without ever meeting him because they were afraid Denver still had the leverage. Oh baby, that is sooo desperate. And their GM gets an extension?? Really, Seriously??

  21. 1) You can’t compare a veteran QB contract to a third-year WR. One hit the open market at the most important position in football and the other still has one year left on his rookie deal, plus a fifth year option.

    2) To everyone saying Hopkins should “stick it to the Texans” with a fake injury: Not being in football shape is a great way to get injured for real, and that could impact his future contract, especially if the injury is serious. His best option to sign a huge contract is to have a huge season, become first team All-Pro, and lead the league in some major receiving categories. Can’t do that from the trainer’s room.

  22. AJ did the exact same thing. He’ll get paid. He made his point, now he’ll go play ball.

  23. Right, sure he wrote that all by himself. When will agents/ PR firms learn to write such statements to the level of their client?
