Report: Patriots and Rob Gronkowski talking about contract

AP

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski might not want to talk about it, but there seems to be some dissatisfaction with his current contract.

The Patriots may be trying to take care of those early in training camp.

According to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the Patriots and Gronkowski’s camp are talking about a pay raise, though nothing appears imminent. His agents, Drew and Jason Rosenhaus, are present at the Patriots facility today. The Patriots triggered the remaining four years of his deal, through 2019, by paying a bonus in March, which will move his earnings for the next four seasons to $27 million.

The Patriots triggered the remaining four years of his deal, through 2019, by paying a bonus in March. That will move his earnings for the next four seasons to $27 million.

He initially signed a six-year, $54 million deal in 2012, which came during his rookie contract. He’s clearly outperforming the contract now, but that’s part of the risk of signing with years remaining on a deal.

Recent deals for players such as Jordan Reed and Travis Kelce and others have underscored how underpaid Gronkowski is.

Now we’ll see if he or the team is prepared to do anything about it.

    For O’Hagen.

  3. The Patriots pay money they don’t have to? They’ll be no money, but on your deathbed you will have complete consciousness that they screwed you. Get used to it Gronk.

  4. He’s worried more about performing for Jimmy G and Tom post week5. He knows he’s underpaid and Bob made it clear hell always be taken care of with NE.
    We’re onto Houston

  5. Pay him, best TE in the NFL.

Gronk is probably next to Brady the one untouchable player on their roster.

The Pats would never think about cutting or trading him at this point of his career like they have with other players due a big raise.

  6. Gronk set up a ‘Rehab center” somewhere in Florida and have Bob Kraft funnel the leftovers from your “home town discount” there.

It’s worked great for Shady Brady and Bob.

    Cheaters always be cheating.

  7. will they include an incentive clauses for Total Amount of Push-Offs Gotten Away With, and Not Whining When Caught Pushing Off?

  8. I’m definitely not a Pats fan, but this dude is a Beast! Dust the cobwebs off those paper stacks, and pay this Man!!

  9. He is not as valuable as Brady to the team. Pay him 75% of what Brady is getting. What is Brady getting this year, you ask? The answer: $4MM.

To the Pats fans: Do you really think he is worth two or three times what Brady is worth this year?

  10. My guess is they are currently just talking about it & seeing how they can best lay the ground work for a deal early next year that will best help them with salary cap management as he’s currently signed thru 2019…. I believe what they are really discussing & focusing on is how they can get Jabaal Sheard locked up for 4-5 years….
This is the time they start to try & take care of their impending important free agents like Sheard who’s also a Rosenhause client….
Then they work on Dante, Collins, Bennett & Butler….
I think many other pending free agents(& there are many) will be allowed to test the market & THEN the Pats will decide to either compete to keep them or let them walk & take the comp picks they will get should they move on with another team…. Pats will AGAIN wait for the free agent market to level off & pick up veteran guys that will best fit their system & fill their needs at bargain contracts for 1-2 years or more…that’s what they do year after year….
    Go Pats!!!!

  11. 2016StockMarketCrash That’s most likely why he wants to redo because he must looking for more guaranteed money. Watching him play he sure goes all out, up and down the field even when’s he’s hurting so I understand, ‘if that’s what it is’. He wants more assurances from injury or career ending injury. Can’t blame him, most of us would too.

  12. Despite being one of the best teams in the league, in 2017 the Pats have the most cap room in the NFL. They have a lot of guys to sign, but they should be able to keep all the players they want to keep.

  13. Um, guys . . . . this article doesn’t say if the Patriots triggered Gronk’s deal, or how many years it was for, and when the bonus was paid. At the very least it should’ve mentioned how much he stands to make over the next 4 years.

  14. “He’s great however injured all the time and misses half the games, he’s paid fairly.”

He’s played in 80 out of a possible 96 regular season games.

  15. It’s a good thing for the Patriots that Kraft has such a vast network of subsidiaries that he can funnel money to Brady through shadow companies. You’d think with such a built-in advantage they’d actually win more than they do though.

  16. Someone tell orange and blue that salary cap cheating and manipulation is the forte of the Broncos.

  17. Best TE in the game, by a large margin and the Patriots real MVP (he opens it up for Brady to complete the 5 yard passes to the slot backs) he deserves to be paid.

He’s great however injured all the time and misses half the games, he’s paid fairly.

He’s playing in 80 out of 96 possible regular season games in his six year career (83.3%). The last two seasons he’s missed one game each (93.75%). But by all means don’t let easily attainable facts get in the way with whatever point you’re trying to make.

Let me give you a tip… most articles on here show the name of the player in bold type… maybe next time click on that name and verify before you say something foolish.

  25. Gronk will be remembered as the best TE to ever play the game as long as he is healthy long enough. As is, he will make the HOF in the way Gayle Sayers did. For those duller knives in the drawer that insist on calling the Patriots cheap, Gronk already was and will again be an example of the team paying the guys they value top dollars. They have a lot of guys to pay, and won’t pay them all I don’t think, but Gronk is indispensable.

  26. I speculate that he will take less than market pay.

Because he plays for one of the greatest head coaches and one of the greatest QBs every to live.

  27. Gronk is a champion. Maybe the greatest TE in NFL history. It is important that he perceives that he is paid fairly. BB looks after the players who deliver and it’s time to show some love.
BB’s special skill is understanding the true value of every player. This is a big part of the Patriots sustained success (AFL – East division champ 13 of the past 16 years. Yes, you may kiss the rings.

I don’t know if he’ll be he best ever (he might) but he’s certainly the most dynamic ever.

In the last 20 years we went from big receivers playing TE like Shannon Sharpe to former basketball players like Gonzalez and Gates to now a guy who’s just a physical freak. Just a real unusual blend of size, speed, athleticism and a willingness to be physical.

I’m the furthest thing from a Pats fan, but I have no problem saying that Gronkowski is the best TE in the game today. The difference between him and the second best TE is the difference between the first and fifth best players at most positions, IMO.

  30. The Gronk will never be let go concept is not indicative of Patriots salary cap management history. I guess I’m the only one who found it odd The Pats picked up a top 10 TE whose contract comes up the same time as a guy who will demand astronomical numbers . Gronk’s production is cut in half without Brady .

Goodell is your daddy. Cheaters pay the price. Don’t be bitter at me for week 17 or I guess the second half the season. I know you feel pressure since Goodell and Kraft divorced but the patriots will have their day again. It only took 25+ years the first time but it may happen again in your existence.

I don’t know what Patriot games you’ve been watching. Gronk is the straw that stirs that drink. Go back and watch last years games with and without Gronk. With Gronk they win, without Gronk they loose and Brady looks lost.

  35. “He’s great however injured all the time and misses half the games, he’s paid fairly.”

One of the more clueless Pats haters.

    2010 – played in all 16 games
    2011 – played in all 16 games
    2012 – played in 11 games
    2013 – played in 7 games
    2014 – played in 15 games
    2015 – played in 15 games

So no, he’s not injured “all the time”. And the injury in 2013 was from an extremely dirty hit made directly to his knee. There’s not a player in the league that can survive a hit like that without being badly injured.

  36. “Like most contracts from the patriots he will he mainly paid under the table.”

Geeze Chippy you’ve just gotten so bad sinking to blatant lies.

Now if you were talking Denver that might be different.

I know, its sad to be a fan of the pathetic Miami team. All you have to look forwards to is whining and crying about the mean ol’ Pats.

No, I could not agree more, as does any reasonable football fan, that to call ANY play that NE DB Browner knowingly played against when Browner played during his many years in Seattle was a bone headed move. OC Bevell called the play, and had should have been fired. See, we in Seattle can acknowledge shortcomings in our team.

  42. First of all let me say I love Gronk , about the only Pats player I can say that about and he’s easily the team’s MVP . Now as far as the Pats fans that want to comment about ” bandwagon ” Broncos fans , and we dominate everyone , and your team cheats , etc. let me set you straight on a few things . First of all the Broncos have been selling out for 5+ decades . Through thick and thin Broncos fans have been supporting their team since the beginning . And Broncos games are always the highest rated tv program even in losing seasons ; for example , the 4-122010 season Hoodie McD Jr coached . What’s the Pats sell out streak at ? I’m guessing 15-16 years ? Also the TB/BB combo has a LOSING record against the Broncos in regular season and playoffs ( 6-10 reg/1-3 playoffs ) so who’s dominated who ? And Bowlen may have deferred some payments to Elway and Davis but that gained them no strategic advantage . And I’m not going to even get into all the cheating scandals the Pats are known for ; we fans know the long and unfortunate history all to well .

I’m not claiming anything, other than if I was a NE fan I’d have thought having a TEN year gap in SB wins for the GOAT, BB combination seems like a vast underachievement.

But I can’t seem to get a single NE fan to acknowledge that fact, even though NE fans loosely throw around terms GOAT and BB as the best ever! I’m from the west coast, and even I’ve admired TB and respected his accuracy, and his game tenacity from afar. Does TB simply get a pass from NE fans, or what is it? 10 years is a long time not to have won a SB, for a duo as talented as TB and BB.

  45. Well I think the plan for the front office here is simple. Let’s call up Bart Scott, Boomer Esiason, Damien Woody, and a few ethically loose producers at ESPN and feed them a few talking points in the vein of “You suck, Gronk. Take whatever you can get and be happy.” That should get those stupid fans thinking in the right direction.

Then take a walk down to the locker room and see if Darrell Revis wouldn’t mind repeating the same thing to the press, and making it sound almost 10% sincere. I mean, you’re paying him enough money. He’s usually good for a few disingenuous sound bytes to help the bottom line.

Oh wait. This isn’t the Jets. It’s a competent football franchise that can resolve a contract issue without bringing the whole planet in on it.

We were in the AFCCG….again. You beat a beat up Pats team with guys off the street playing o-line. Congratulations. BTW, congratulations on that last SB win in 1973. This is a what have you done for me now league Chippy. Fanboys from teams who have been irrelevant for 43 years should keep their traps shut and hide in disgrace. As for my existence tool I’ve been around for the entire history of the Patriots. The bad, the good and the incredibly awesome times. Irrelevant trolls can’t tell me a thing I don’t already know about the Patriots. You stick to worrying about that cesspool of a team you support. 43 years seems like more than enough time to win again for such a mighty franchise as yours. Your team stinks, annually, reliably. You know in February you have no shot at a championship the next season and just maybe 43 more years. Keep to surfin chipster. Following your team must be so joyless.

  49. I doubt Gronk is unhappy or bitter – he took a big long contact whilst still a rookie and that’s a chance both sides take. He’s a Patriot through & through and he doesn’t even touch his salary anyway. But his agents can sniff that dap space in their sleep and are just doing their jobs for the best all-round TE in the league and I wouldn’t expect any less.

OK…..since 2005, the year after NE with Brady and BB had won 3 out of 4 SB’s, 10 division title in 11 years with the only other a 2nd place finish the year Brady was lost 8 minutes into the season. 7 conference finals in 11 years. 3 SB appearances. Show me a QB with that kind of consistency over a career. Show me any fan base that wouldn’t take that record of achievement. Ya, no SB wins in 10 years. I find it interesting that folks wonder about those 2 SB’s. Tom’s 4th and 5th out of 6. Elway is the only one with 5. He won 2 and lost 3. Of course we now know the 2 wins were directly effected by salary cap manipulation so there’s that. Even the Great Joe Montana with his great 49ers teams only got to 4. Bradshaw too. In Brady’s 2 losses he had the team ahead only to see the defense give up the lead late in the games. One could, but won’t say he should have been 6-0. We leave tough loss excuses to Seahawks fans.

  59. “Soooooo, what’s NE’s excuse for 2007 and 2012? I mean, wasn’t the so called “goat” in his prime then?”

No excuses needed. The Giants had great game plans an executed them extremely well.

Even then the Pats were in both Super Bowls until only seconds left.

Kudos to the Giants and Tom Coughlin. They played their rear ends off and beat the Pats fair and square.

    ——–

    @imodan

Goodell is your daddy. Cheaters pay the price. Don’t be bitter at me for week 17 or I guess the second half the season. I know you feel pressure since Goodell and Kraft divorced but the patriots will have their day again. It only took 25+ years the first time but it may happen again in your existence.

    ———————————————————————-

Biased and gullible people that didn’t notice any of the “56 LIES THE NFL TOLD DURING DEFLATEGATE” became dupes and many continue believe the initial false story that was later corrected which claimed that 11 of 12 Patriots footballs were 2.0 PSI below 12.50 PSI.

The NFL only measured 10 Patriots footballs which contradicts the claim that 12 footballs were measured. The NFL measured 10 Patriots footballs using 2 two pressure gauges to obtain 20 separate measurements. 19 of those measurements were above 10.50 PSI which contradicts the claim that 11 footballs were 2.0 PSI below 12.50 PSI.

One of the 20 measurements being at 10.50 PSI can be explained by a defective football with a slow leak or air being released during the measuring process. The valves in footballs can be defective. The initial lie about “11 of 12” is what made a defective football scenario seem improbable.

4 of the 12 Colts footballs were measured and after the Patriots 10 footballs were all measured twice. 3 of 4 of the Colts footballs had measurements below 12.50 when measured with one of the gauges. That same gauge measured one of the footballs at exactly 12.50 PSI but the measurements were clearly transposed so that measurements was attributed to the other pressure gauge.

Colts PSI measurements when they were measured by the NFL near the end of halftime:
    Colts football #1 12.70 — 12.35
    Colts football #2 12.75 — 12.30
    Colts football #3 12.50 — 12.95
    Colts football #4 12.55 — 12.15

The measurements of the Patriots footballs were then compared to the measurements of the Colts footballs and that comparison resulted in the inaccurate conclusion of “cheating”.

That comparison was flawed and here is why:
    • The NFL allows footballs to be within a range of 12.50 PSI to 13.50 PSI. It is known that prior to the start of the game the Patriots footballs were measured at 12.50 PSI and the Colts footballs were measured at 13.50 PSI.

    • The Colts were the visiting team so the Colts footballs were likely transported in the cargo hold of an airplane and then the luggage trunk of a bus. This means that the Colts footballs could have already been more acclimated to outdoor temperatures when measured prior to the game.

    • It is known that the Colts football did not get as wet at the Patriots footballs during the first half of the game. This is due to time of possession and that the Colts footballs were being kept in a plastic bag and the Patriots footballs were out in the open. A study was done where it was shown that by wetting a football the volume can increase by up to 3%.

This is due to the fact that leather becomes more pliable when it is wet. This allows the leather to stretch thereby increasing the size of the football. So the same amount of air that was stuffed into a smaller container is then held in a slightly larger container will result in a small pressure drop.

    • It is a fact that wet footballs warm up slower than dry footballs. We also know that the 4 Colts dryer footballs were allowed to warm up indoors while 10 of the Patriots wetter footballs were all being measured twice.

Even the physicists that were still believing the false story about the 11 of 12 footballs dropping 2.0 PSI stated that footballs will drop in pressure when moved from a warm location to a colder location. Some concluded that the temperature difference couldn’t account for a 2.0 PSI drop. The temperature did not have to account for a 2.0 PSI drop because it didn’t happen. Plus the rain was a second factor that needs to be considered.

This is confirmed by tests online where you can watch on video as the pressure readings drop on pressure gauges that are left inserted in footballs as the football are placed into a refrigerator. The pressure readings can then be seen rising when the refrigerator door is opened some time later.

This information would be confirmed by obtaining measurements during NFL games played under similar weather conditions. The NFL is reported to have collected measurements during the 2015 season but has decided to keep those measurements secret. Which is interesting because the NFL seemed to go out of its way to make everything else about deflategate as public as possible especially the 56 lies.

The only way TB12 can be considered the GOAT is if he has success outside the Patriots system. Otherwise his success will always be credited to the system he played in. Let’s not forget, Matt Cassel went 11-5 in that very system. Also if Jimmy G has success it will further eviscerate the argument that TB12 is the GOAT.

This comment (like the handle) is so nonsensical that I barely know where to begin…

So no one can be considered the GOAT if they never got traded or released or accomplished anything outside of the team that drafted them? Hey, Tim Duncan, you stink….

Matt Cassel was in the Patriots system backing up Brady for 4 years when he got his chance, and this Patriots team was 16-0 the year before. He did well because he was coached managed well by Belichick and company, and the Patriots had all of their offensive weapons. Hardly a mystery.

Finally, if Jimmy G does well it has no bearing at all on what Tom Brady has accomplished, which is at the highest level the league has ever seen. One has nothing at all to do with the other.

Here’s a tip: try not to drink and post…

    ====================================

It should now be obvious to everyone that one of there things is going on here:
    1. Someone is a bandwagon Denver fan
    2. Someone isn’t even Bronco fan. Because any actual fan of the Denver Broncos would know that DENVER WAS THE ONLY NFL TEAM EVER CAUGHT TAPING ANOTHER TEAMS PRACTICE !!!. The NFL levied a fine for that.
    3. Someone is being intentionally dense.

Patriots ignored a memo almost 1o years ago and positioned a camera in the wrong location for a portion of a GAME in the same season that the memo was sent. A game that was played in front of over 55,000 fans and broadcast on live television. To this day many dumb people believe that this single incident represents a pattern of cheating.

  71. It’s interesting how the article is slanted.

Consider how a single omission of fact in the following sentence skews the readers perspective….

“The Patriots triggered the remaining four years of his deal, through 2019, by paying a bonus in March. That will move his earnings for the next four seasons to $27 million.”

If the author had included the fact that the “bonus” was for 10 million dollars it certainly would have changed his narrative.

OK, I’ll ask. So only a couple years after the whole spygate thing and the HUGE case made about integrity and the Pats lose a first round draft choice, $750,000 fine for the Pats and Belichick gets whacked for another $500,000 why oh why did the Broncos get spanked for 50 grand and Mcdaniels the same amount? Stupid is a person that would believe headsetgate even after teams said it happens everywhere and the NFL claimed responsibility for the faulty headsets.

Stupid is the dopes that believed in bugs when it was just paranoia.

Really stupid are those that continue to believe that cold and rain doesn’t affect football pressures. At least they are qualified to work for the NFL.

Extremely stupid is anyone that could believe that the Patriots taped another teams walkthrough because a former employee did it while on the Denver payroll and travelling with the Broncos in London.

  84. “Extremely stupid is anyone that could believe that the Patriots taped another teams walkthrough because a former employee did it while on the Denver payroll and travelling with the Broncos in London.”

Mindblowingly stupid is believing that McDaniels and Scarnecchia suddenly came up with the idea on their own, when they were employees of the team accused of the exact same offense against the Rams. Where did they dream up such an idea? Is it coincidence that Belichick had been accused of exactly that form of cheating a few years prior?

The most tired argument against Brady of all time. That was a 16-0 team that just lost at the SB. They were gonna win at least 14 with Brady. Cassel cost them games. I can remember 2 games specifically, the jets OT loss and the colts game. NE wins both with Brady. That “system” is tailored to Brady. If it was so fool-proof why doesn’t every offense that doesn’t have Rodgers or Brees run it? NE has been a top 5 offense for almost a decade and you’re an idiot.

  94. since 2001 we sports fans in New England have been truly blessed. Besides getting to watch Tom Brady, one of the greatest to play the game , we have had championships from ALL major pro sports teams. The Pat’s have won 4 times, the Red Sox 3 times & the Celtics & Bruins once each.
No other area can match that. It’s just wonderful to live in New England!

  95. I guess big bronco has a problem with reading comprehension , since 2001 the Celtics have only won a single championship, in 2008. Though they have won 17 total!
    Go Pats .

  96. How much will he get for continuing to keep quiet about all the cheating? That’s got to be worth at least a million a year.

  97. Pay him, best TE in the NFL.

Gronk is probably next to Brady the one untouchable player on their roster.

The Pats would never think about cutting or trading him at this point of his career like they have with other players due a big raise.

I disagree, if BB thought it would help the team those two would be gone tomorrow.
