Trump retreats from claim that NFL sent letter regarding debates

Presidential candidate Donald Trump doesn’t like the fact that two of the three scheduled debates conflict with NFL prime-time games. He claimed in an interview with ABC’s This Week that the NFL sent him a letter calling the move “ridiculous.”

The league called him on it, saying no letter was sent. Apparently learning a lesson from the last time he took on the NFL (as owner of the USFL’s New Jersey Generals), Trump has backed down.

“Mr. Trump was made aware of the conflicting dates by a source close to the league,” Trump’s campaign said in a statement to This Week.

The difference between being “made aware” of the conflict by a “source close to the league” and having the NFL officially express disapproval of the schedule in a letter is significant, obviously. And it doesn’t take much for a “source close to the league” to make Trump “aware” of the conflict. The source could have been his friend Tom Brady. The source could have been three-time former NFL coach Mike Shanahan, who hosted a fundraiser for Trump in Colorado. The source could have been one of the various owners he knows. The source could have been Paul Hicks, former NFL P.R. chief and father of Trump’s current P.R. chief, Hope Hicks.

Regardless, someone provided Trump with open and obvious information about the scheduling of two debates on nights when the NFL typically plays games: Sunday and Monday. That’s a long way from an official effort to get the debates moved that was reduced to writing, printed on NFL letterhead, and signed by Roger Goodell or some other high-level league executive.

90 responses to “Trump retreats from claim that NFL sent letter regarding debates

  1. Trump is a master at self promotion.
He’s managed to once again get free publicity.

  2. Trump single-handedly destroyed the USFL. He’ll do the same to America if elected.

  3. This guy is just full of it. I feel sorry for anyone who falls for this con mans game. I dont get his supporters he literally gets caught exaggerating and lying on a daily basis.

  4. Sad that this man has made it this far with the possibility to be the President of the free world.

  5. When he’s more full of it than the NFL front office, he’s pretty bad. According to the political fact checkers, across the board nobody lies like Donald Trump. He’s worse than Hillary and Ted Cruz combined, and that’s saying a lot. He makes America look bad in front of the world. Can we vote for the person Russia does NOT like at least?

  6. No argument from me about Trump being a liar. However Hillary is probably even worse and worse at it. This country is is serious trouble.

First, the NFL wants eyes on the game, and will put pressure wherever needed to eliminate competition for those eyes. Anyone who thinks the NFL did not notify Trump(unofficially, of course, “plausible deniability”) to point out the schedule is naive.

Second, the debates are administered by the League of Women Voters. (What gender is Hillary?)

Third, Please keep politics out of football. We get enough of that shoved down our throats everywhere else.

  8. “Presidential candidate Donald Trump doesn’t like the fact that two of the three scheduled debates conflict with NFL prime-time games. ” — More like he doesn’t want his butt handed to him in the debates.

  9. The “source” could also have been the NFL schedule that have been out for a while and is not exactly a state secret, just saying…

I don’t know if his name is trump he might be lying about that to…

He is, it’s Drumph. Look it up.

  11. What amazes me is that he needed someone to tell him there was a conflict on Sunday or Monday nights during the fall?? C’mon people – He’s milking this, he’s using the media like puppets!

And he probably made sure the debates were on Monday night to minimize the viewership thus minimizing the damages..

  12. Trump thrives on sound bites and tweets. I’m sure he wants America watching football rather than hours of him trying not to sound hateful, divisive, and bigoted.

  13. Trump’s real last name is “Drumpf.” His father changed it to “Trump.”

Credit to John Oliver and his team over at Last Week Tonight.

  14. For the next (and first general election) debate, I would seriously like this question to be put to Trump: “Mr. Trump, you have repeatedly asserted that ‘you and you, ALONE’ are singularly qualified to fix the problems facing this nation. As such, we here now grant you five full minutes to speak to justify that assertion. The floor is yours, Mr. Trump.”

===> prediction: Trump would fall all over himself with inane non-sensical ramblings and hollow (and often self-contradictory) substance-devoid boasts.

When called out on any number of them, Trump will double down – to show he does not back down.

When further pressed, Trump will triple down even more defiantly.

And when the attack is relentless and bi-partisan – Trump will do what he always does: claim he was obviously kidding or being sarcastic (i.e., making excuses and backing down). For the next (and first general election) debate, I would seriously like this question to be put to Trump: “Mr. Trump, you have repeatedly asserted that ‘you and you, alone’ are singularly qualified to fix the problems facing this nation. 15. Lol all I can do is laugh at the lemmings that buy every bad piece of press on Trump. 30+ years of scandal and self enrichment defines the Clintons yet you ignore every bit of it. I hope Trump deports every liberal in this country.

  16. The real darkness is there actually are Americans who support this clown. A lot of them! Who are they? What could possibly be in their brains to make them think this man would be a good President? Trump wouldn’t be where he is if not for his supporters. His supporters are the real nightmare. To realize so many people actually think like Trump and they live in America – Sad. But I have too much faith in the majority of us to ever let it happen.

Like most people who support Trump instead of admitting he’s a serial liar your first instinct is to deflect. …and by saying it’s the league of women voters fault and it happened because she’s a woman is hogwash! If anything the Clinton campaign would want Donald to be seen by as many as possible his name calling and lack of policy or facts may have flown in the primary but in a national election it will eventually fall flat.

  18. Is there anyone who cares if there is schedule conflicts? No one cares who is running for president because they’re just puppets. No matter who wins, we all are gonna lose. George Carlin was 100% right.

I think it’s pretty obvious that Americans already know, as does the rest of the world, that presidential elections are all for show.

    Then again so does Clinton.

Fact Checkers (you can google it) determined that trump lies over 91% of the time. Hillary’s percentage is much lower. So there’s that.

Trump’s support begins and ends with the fact that he is not Hillary Clinton. And before you point to his tendency to exaggerate or fabricate as being a character trait unique only to him, you might want to examine her record on telling the truth.

  23. For the political people

Let’s all be honest. This election is going to the person that sucks the least.

If it wasn’t so sad it would be comical.

  24. He should be glad, be a lot less people see Hillary pummel this clown into the ground.
Ya I bet when he isnt on Twitter for hours on end like a 5 year old, he is preparing notes and gathering data and deeply anticipating questions that may be asked of him.
I’m sure he has spent a lot of money to hire experts to tutor him. NOT!

  25. “Trump” is British slang to expel intestinal gas through the anus. How appropriate.

  26. Tom Brady and Trump being friends should not come as a surprise. Same ethical standards.

No one is as blind as those who refuse to see. I feel sorry for those who have fallen for trump’s carnival barker routine.

  28. Ahhhhhh the liberals always talking about how smart they are. So you’re stupid and uneducated if you support trump but so highly educated, aware and full of class if you support Hillary. I see. So I guess being “smart” is lying thru your teeth about almost everything, acting like your the champion of minorities even tho you live in a 99% white town, smear and railroad women your husband has raped and pander and lie to minorities for their votes while doing absolutely nothing for them. Gotcha.

  29. These dates for the debates were set over a year ago by a non-partisan group well ahead of the league schedule. T rump doesn’t check the facts as usual.

  30. This guy will say anything, anything at all, as long as it supports his personal agenda. He, and his followers, don’t care if it’s true or if it’s refuted. By the time it is brought back to his attention, he shrugs his shoulders like “so what!”

It reminds me of Viking fans.

  31. Ponder this —

This whole lie was premised on the idea that the NFL thought so much of this malignant bigot with the hands and temperament of an un-potty-trained toddler that someone sat down to write him a letter to inform him that the Commission on Debate’s September 2015 scheduling decisions conflicted with the all important Saints vs. Falcons game.

He created this fictional world in his brain, then spewed it out his mouth. Then, rather than admit it was a lie, the campaign says that someone “close to the league” — not a league employee . . . and not by letter — told him what was public information almost a year ago?!

He is a pathological liar surrounded by yes men.

  32. Trump lies about EVERYTHING. He’s been doing it all his life, which is why he can’t stop lying. And for those who try to equate Clinton with Trump, please…..Trump is in the “horrible human being” class all by himself. We’re talking about a man who publicly mocks disabled people, scammed lots of people out of large sums of money with his fake real estate seminars (taught be people who weren’t even in real estate) and has lied for years about making charitable contributions. He’s a lowlife.

  33. Charlie Brown always say he don’t like losers, so how can he say he loves his supporters? For the real old fans, Charlie Brown ” the song ” best statement was ” why is every one always picking on me “. I pray and hope this blow heart goes down to disgrace on November 8th. Bill

  34. I’m shocked he needed a source to know that there are NFL games on Sunday and Monday nights. Seriously?

  35. Reminds me of the time he said the electoral system was fine and bragged about how he carried Florida during the primaries (it was a winner-take-all state, you have the majority, you win all of the delegates in that state). Fast forward a month later to when Cruz beats him in Colorado, which was also a winner-take-all state, and Drumpf was complaining that the primary system was broken and rigged.

The cognitive dissonance is just stupifying.

  36. “whoever set date for debate when a football game is scheduled does not think debate is worth much”

    * * * * *

The idea that a debate between the two candidates battling to be leader of the free world should play second to a regular season football game just shows you how warped are the priorities of a sizeable portion of this country.

  37. I think people are just numb to his lying so don’t think he will lose any support over this.
What really amazes me is that people, 38% of voters, would be OK with this guy being in charge of our military.
Think about it – he wouldn’t need ANYONE else’s approval to attack another country!
And he is OK with torture!!!

  38. Little hands Trump is such a liar, is there anything we can believe from this scumbag. I’d rather watch the NFL than hear the crap coming out of his mouth. I don’t normally agree with the NFL, but nice they called him on this.

I guess you didn’t notice that the DNC hooked Hillary up and set up her few debates with Bernie at times when no one would be watching, including during NFL playoff games.

actually, if you believe the polls, there’s still 10 to 15% undecided voters out there. Crazy? Absolutely. More Crazy? The fact that they will decide the next President. Although that’s not entirely true… it’s about 500k voters in certain battleground states that will decide it.

  41. So when does the DNC begin their demand to change the debate dates to Tuesdays or Wednesdays so Hillary will get the added exposure?
I won’t hold my breath waiting for that announcement, since Trump will eat her lunch in any debate. Check out the Trey Gowdy – James Comey grilling.

  42. How funny to read Patriot fans rip Trump.

THE PATRIOTS ARE THE DONALD TRUMP OF THE NFL!!!

    Brady supports him
Least diverse coaching staff in all sports
    Least diverse team in NFL

Seriously, I’m shocked they didn’t sign Toby Gerhart just so they could have a white running back.

  43. “I don’t think we need these debates. nobody will change their mind”

This year they’ll be more for entertainment. Trump will either not show up or will be a sputtering fool on stage. I hope it goes through – many have stocked up on popcorn for the show.

  44. Trump supporters are lemmings.

jppblownofffingers and all the other simpletons who support Trump are clowns of the highest order.

I weep for the children and the loved ones of those clowns.

    Carry on.

  45. Why on earth would Trump want the debates moved?! He wants AS FEW PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE watching. This isn’t the softballs lobbed from Fox News, vs the incompetent opponents like Ben Carson or Marco Rubio.

The debates are going to require a lot of preparation, or he’s going to get mopped (see: he’s going to get mopped).

  46. Slow down, guys! It is not fair to accuse Trump of lying. In order to lie, you must also be capable of telling the truth. The poor man just does not know the difference between truth and lies. Ergo, he is incapable of lying, just as he is incapable of telling the truth. A similar affliction affects his supporters who cannot tell the difference between real and fraud.

  47. Putin can’t understand why his political techniques are not working for Trump.
Russia will be sending special advisors to help him out, so expect better lies and conspiracies. But Trump’s fantasy football moves will be more puzzling than usual.

  48. Not hard to tell many posters here drink the MSNBC Kool-Aid. FBI Director Comey clearly stated Hillary was untruthful repeatedly to the Congressional Committee, yet her supporters (here) choose to ignore these lies and instead just bash Trump. Wake up, guys… you’re supporting the WRONG candidate!
For the record… The Donald is the one wanting greater exposure of the scheduled debates, NOT Hillary. Why is that, if she is so convinced she is the superior debater? Also, wouldn’t it seem reasonable that she would release her Wall Street Transcripts if they are favorable for her? Guess she wants those secret tapes kept secret, too, just like her 33,000 deleted emails.

  49. Yet the nfl acknowledged they didn’t like the debates being scheduled at that time. Also how could trump do as bad as clinton? She is awful. Turkey has our nuclear warheads hostage in Turkey as we speak.

  50. @ddarrell61
Trump… Says he’s a great businessman won’t show proof! No tax records the first person running for president in decades to not release his taxes.

Here’s the issue any other year Hillary would have no chance but this year she is running against the most unqualified idiotic presidential candid it in history!

Just yesterday in 1 interview 1!! Heshowed that he has no respect for the family of a fallen soldier by comparing running businesses to giving your life for our country!
He also seemed to be unaware of Russia’s incursion into Crimea. Saying Putin is not going into the Ukraine. He’s already there!! This man is a dangerous buffoon. He literally is unaware of one of the biggest international issues of the last decade!!
No matter how horrible Hillary is Trump is a billion times worse!! Get out of here with your comments about drinking kook aid. Go read a book educate yourself stop buying this mans snake oil!

  51. You don’t vote in a reality TV star to the same office that George Washington had the title. You can hate everything HRC stands for, but during her time she will at least surround herself with others entrenched in Politics and play the game we all hate.

You don’t screw up America by putting Trump as the President of the United States. You gather yourselves ,organize and find the right candidates to run in 4 years. Americans have screwed themselves with this election, it can only be fixed in 4 years. Just hope the country and world is still here.

  52. I’ve been paying close attention to this con man and like most people here say, he literally makes things up as he speaks. The pattern started decades ago.

  53. Boy, his supporters sure are quite about this. I guess calling Hillary a liar is running out of steam. This guy has a serious mental problem.

  54. Clinton has had her times of mishandling the truth (though I personally don’t know of any outright lies she has told). That, I’m afraid, is par for the course in our politicians. But there is no way in the world one can compare her lifetime of public speaking with the constant stream of bald-faced lies and utter nonsense that trump regurgitates on a daily basis. And, even more damaging to America than his lies, he is encouraging and exploiting the racism that has continued to taint America since the first slaves in Virginia in 1620.

  55. “Trumpty Dumpty sat on a wall……”
The “fall” bit will come when he debates Clinton who will cooly run rings around his complete ignorance about world affairs.I’ll bet he couldn’t even find Russia and Ukraine on a map of the world so Hillary should be prepared and have one ready. After that, no-one will be around to put him back together again and Republicans will never mention his name again in polite company.

  56. That Trump had to be told NFL football games are played on every Sunday and Monday night through the season means he isn’t an American. Who the hell doesn’t know this. My cat knows this.

  57. willycents says:
Second, the debates are administered by the League of Women Voters. (What gender is Hillary?)
    ————————–
The debates are NOT administered by the League of Women Voters. The debates are administered by The Commission on Presidential Debates. The last Presidential debate hosted by the League of Women Voters was in 1984, over 30 years ago.

Your comment about Hillary’s gender, which obviously has zero bearing on this topic, was kind of like something Donald Drumpf would say. What it lacked in factual substance it more than made up for in passive-aggressive bitterness.

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced the debate schedule back on Sept. 23, 2015. Members of the Commission are old party hacks from both the GOP and the Dems. Both parties agreed to the schedule.

The 2016 debate schedule didn’t become an issue until Drumpf realized that Hillary can and would clobber him repeatedly and without mercy. Drumpf is trying to find a way to duck out of them while blaming her.

Drumpf isn’t fit to carry Hillary’s jockstrap.

  58. Kgun80…
So you ignore the FBI Director admitting Hillary lied MULTIPLE TIMES, you ignore her failure to release her Wall Street transcripts (you know, the transcripts that would surely be SO BENEFICIAL that she must keep them secret), and of course, the scheduled debate dates must not be changed (hey, that worked well keeping the Bernie debates out of the spotlight).
Get your head out of the sand!!!

  59. Well — gotta say — reading the above from the typically conservative PFT crowd gives me great optimism about this election.

Waytogo guys for coming through when it matters most.

That is what is crazy. 85% of the voters make their choice based on which political party the candidate is affiliated with. If you have already decided who you are voting for, why even have the debates? Why have the RNC/DNC conventions 6 months ahead of time? I will use the Dems for this, because their primary was pretty close, when you ignore the fact that the system was rigged for Hillary. The number of Bernie supporters was right up there with the number of Hillary supporters. But all of those Bernie supporters, who HATED Hillary, are going to do what on election day? They are gonna vote for “Clinton (D)” because she has a “(D)” next to her name. Doesn’t seem so strange to me — when the dust settles — after the primaries and the conventions — compare the candidates and decide who will get you closer to where you believe we should be going. Politics is not an all-or-nothing game.

Supporters of Senator Sanders and supporters of all of the 18 GOP primary candidates must look at the final choices and say – this is my America — who’s it going to be.

And what’s the cost if it turns out the other way.

Makes it an easy choice to me.

I look to the debates to close the deal — whether or not Trump bothers to show up at all.

  62. If you believe that Trump is anything other than controlled opposition for Hillary, hop on the short bus. Fools!

  63. Obama was groomed to be president 20 years ago.. Stop voting, its rigged!!! You people are so far behind. lmao
