Inside Tyrann Mathieu’s unique deal

Cardinals defensive back Tyrann Mathieu’s unique circumstances led to a very unique contract.

PFT has obtained the full details of the contract signed by the safety who plays plenty of cornerback. They are as follows:

1. $15.5 million signing bonus, which is not tied to Mathieu passing a physical. (He’s still on the Physically Unable to Perform list after tearing an ACL last December.) That’s more than the full guarantees Vikings safety Harrison Smith and Seahawks safety Earl Thomas received at signing.

2. $1 million base salary for 2016, fully guaranteed at signing.

3. $4.75 million base salary for 2017, fully guaranteed at signing.

4. Salary of $5.75 million in 2018, not guaranteed at signing for injury or otherwise. On the first day of the 2018 league year, it becomes fully guaranteed.

5. Roster bonus of $5 million due on the third day of the 2018 league year.

6. Salary of $10.75 million in 2019, $8 million of which becomes fully guaranteed on the first day of the 2018 league year.

7. $10.75 million salary for 2020, not guaranteed.

8. $9.25 million salary for 2021, not guaranteed.

9. $250,000 in annual workout bonuses for 2017 through 2021.

10. $250,000 incentive if named defensive player of the year in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.

If every check is cashed (and if the workout bonuses are earned in every year), it’s a six-year, $64 million deal and a five-year, $62.5 million extension. Another $1.25 million is available — if he wins the defensive player of the year award five straight times.

As a practical matter, it’s a two-year, $21.5 million deal or, given that he was under contract for $1.5 million in 2016, a one-year, $20 million, fully-guaranteed extension. In all, he’s guaranteed $21.25 million even if he’s never able to pass a physical.

For the Cardinals, the protection comes from the complete lack of guarantees beyond 2017. They can move on at that point. If they keep him beyond the first day of the league year, another $13.75 million becomes fully guaranteed and, two days later, another $5 million is earned. So that’s $18.75 million over the next two years. Adding in the workout bonuses, he can make $43.5 million over four years.

Given Mathieu’s injury history, with two torn ACLs in three years, it would have been impossible to roll the dice on his contract year given the money that was on the table for 2016 and 2017. Then, come 2018, the Cardinals exclusively hold the power to decide whether to add two more years.

  1. Will easily be renegotiated with another career year this year and more offers.
You almost have to stop looking at long term contracts or numbers anymore except for the guaranteed money.
Also goes to show you how flimsy an LSU kid with a ‘pot problem’ really is in actuality

  2. Is this a unique deal necessarily? It seems like they took him out behind the woodshed.

  3. Wow, that is more team friendly than I anticipated. Great work by Keim to keep this team out of cap bell!

  4. This contract sounds like the agent was positioning himself for HIS future clients by the numbers negotiated: impressive dollars for an injured player.

The bonus for 5 time in a row DPOY proves it. Impossible to collect, this is window dressing.

  5. This seems like a good deal for both sides. Mathieu makes up the money he lost by being a 3rd rndr, instead of the 1st he messed up,and w/Cap expected to rise Cards get a bargain All Pro S. That being said, the Cards are making a lg investment in a player that’s had 2 major injuries in 3 yrs.

  6. wow…$21M in new money is a solid deal for both parties…low risk for the Cards…great for the player if he puts together a couple injury free seasons…might be able to get another deal soon.

  7. and this fine people is the reason franchises often overlook red flags players have, but they just might end up paying off….glad he was able to right his ship off the field and in turn do great things on the field

  8. There are a few teams out there that do their contracts so on point they maximize their cap. When I heard Mathieu was the highest paid safety in the NFL I thought good for him but that’s going to eat up space. But Steve Keim showed why he is a top 5 GM.

He is a play making stud and everyone can see his leadership but those 2 years on the deal I don’t even think Cards fans think he will see that money. Guaranteed money is the biggest factor.

  9. “Another $1.25 million is available — if he wins the defensive player of the year award five straight times.”

I hope they’re talking about the team’s DPOY, not the league’s DPOY because that is ridiculous. That’s a heck of a reach to keep $1.25 million of incentives from the kid.

No, that would be John Schneider of the Seahawks.

    Pro Bowl players drafted
    Schneider: 9
    Keim: 1

    Division titles:
    Schneider: 3
    Keim: 1

    Playoff victories
    Schneider: 8
    Keim: 1

    Conference Championships
    Schneider: 2
    Keim: 0

    Super Bowl appearances
    Schneider: 2
    Keim: 0

    Super Bowl Wins
    Schneider: 1
    Keim: 0

So pretty much Schneider all the way.

  11. This is a great deal for both sides. As a 3rd Round pick, Honey Badger gets a huge raise. As a team needed protection from future injuries, the Cardinals have the option to move on without major cap implications down the line.

It took longer to get done than most anticipated, but given all the nuances outlined above, it isn’t surprising at all.

  12. As long as there are injury conditions to keep the cards from being salary cap hurt when Tyrann is hurt.

I don’t mind him getting paid, BUT for the love of God, he hasn’t even played a complete season out of the 3 he has been in the league.

WOW, you do realize that Schneider has been doing it a lot longer than Keim…..Let’s wait a few more years before you start throwing stones.

The Seahags are on the way down as the Cardinals are on the way up. It is the nature of the league.

Lol. Carson is what, 37? Larry has been around how long?

Yeaaaaah, this is AZ’ last chance before the rebuild. That’s what happens when your QB is old enough to remember Washington crossing the Delaware.

  15. Great player. Good to see him finally get paid! Wished Seattle had him. Earl Thomas is late on critical coverage. Couldn’t even cover Amendola in the end zone even when he knew the ball was coming to him during that SB. Talk about an over hyped player. I’d roll the dice with TM!

  16. Schneider is so good, he finished in second place behind Steve Keim’s team! Not just by one game, but by three!

    So there’s that.

Hey, say what you want, but Seagulls fans are really proud of that second-place finish and their 10-9 win over the Vikings that was gifted to them by Blair Walsh!

  17. But if Seahawks fans want to pat themselves on the back for being better than the Rams & 49ers, the barely winning a playoff game against the Vikings kicker…sure, go ahead!
