Jerry Jones’ comments may have hurt Cowboys’ chances of signing Foles

When quarterback Nick Foles was released by the Rams, Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones said that Foles “isn’t an option” and said the team preferred the backup quarterback it had, Kellen Moore. Then Moore got hurt, and the Cowboys suddenly had interest in Foles.

But Foles chose to sign with the Chiefs instead, and Ed Werder of ESPN suggested that Jones’ comments about Foles may have turned Foles off.

“Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones were asked about their interest and they said they weren’t interested, they knew who he was because he played in their division, and they believed the quarterback they had was a better player at the No. 2 position. Then the injury occurred and it dramatically changed circumstances, but I don’t know that Nick Foles ever got over what he considered to be derogatory remarks made by the Cowboys about their backup quarterback position,” Werder said today on NFL Live.

Foles ended up going to Kansas City, where he knows he’s respected by coach Andy Reid, who drafted him in Philadelphia. Jones may have been better off not expressing an opinion when he was first asked about his interest in Foles.
