Jerry Jones: Dak Prescott, Jameill Showers deserve an opportunity

While the Cowboys might regret having two inexperienced backups as Tony Romo's understudies, Mike Florio explains that the team is doomed if Romo isn't playing.

The Cowboys haven’t added a quarterback to the roster since Kellen Moore broke his ankle and the current line from Dallas is that they won’t be adding anyone in the immediate future either.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said after a weekend scrimmage that he was “encouraged” by what he saw from the two quarterbacks and followed up on Wednesday by saying that he wants Prescott and Showers to get every possible rep as the team continues to “evaluate these quarterbacks.”

“We’ve seen enough from them that they deserve this opportunity,” Jones said on ESPN 103.3, via the team’s website. “We’re going to see that, and so I don’t see bringing a quarterback in here that has to take reps away from these guys during the preseason. ... These young quarterbacks are going to get it, and I’m not going to waste that time. That time is a precious commodity in the NFL to evaluate quarterbacks.”

Romo had a rest day on Tuesday, which left a lot of reps for the other two quarterbacks. They should get plenty more in Los Angeles on Saturday night and it won’t be long before we know if the Cowboys have any thoughts about a change in plan.
