No college team has put more wide receiver talent into the NFL in recent years than Clemson. DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins were first-round picks in 2013 and 2014 and are two of the most talented young receivers in the NFL, and Martavis Bryant has the same kind of talent, although repeated violations of the league’s substance-abuse policy have prevented him from making the most of his talent.

Clemson wide receivers coach Jeff Scott, however, says the best may be yet to come. Scott says Clemson’s No. 1 receiver this year, Mike Williams, is right up there with Hopkins and Watkins.

“I think he has potential to be as good as any guy that we’ve had here. He definitely has potential to be in that conversation,” Scott told the Post and Courier. “He’s made some plays in practice that remind us of some of those guys whenever they were here. There’s no doubt we see him in that same light.”

Williams may very well have been a first-round pick in this year’s draft if he hadn’t suffered a broken bone in his neck in September. After that injury, Williams missed the rest of the season and decided to return for another year in college.

“Last year in fall camp, I felt like he was in a position that he was going to have a big year and probably have an easy decision to make as far as moving on to the next level because of where he put himself,” Scott said.

NFL fans have already heard of more than one wide receiver named Mike Williams. This Mike Williams is one to keep an eye on in the future.
