Chip Kelly: Kaepernick has “arm fatigue,” will be limited today

AP

At the moment, the 49ers quarterback competition could be a bit of a moot point.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, Colin Kaepernick’s “planned rest day” yesterday was for a reason.

Coach Chip Kelly said that Kaepernick was dealing with “arm fatigue,” and will be limited in today’s joint practice with the Texans.

That also means that Blaine Gabbert will be the starter in the preseason opener at Houston Sunday night, though Kaepernick should play at some point.

Kaepernick had surgery this offseason on his non-throwing shoulder, and any limitation on his ability to play adds to the perception that Gabbert has the lead for the job come the regular season.

The fact Gabbert took all the work with the ones while Kaepernick was recovering from surgery was the first sign, but with each passing day, it seems Kaepernick’s chances of reclaiming his old job are slipping away.

  1. I have to think this is just a move to help the guy save some face. He isn’t a good quarterback. That’s been obvious to people who understand football for a few years now.

  2. Have any of you clowns ever thrown a ball? Kap has been sidelined by injury for months and is just getting back out there of course he is sore. Lap will win the starting the season job but of course gabbert deserves it right now he has been running the system longer

  3. NFL backup QB is the best job in the USA. Who among us wouldn’t hold a clipboard for a couple million bucks a year? I’m fairly certain that Kap is faking it … he’s smarter than he looks.

  4. Haters are going to hate. Chip Kelly was brought in to work with Kaep. Gabbert had a year and a half to make it work and he’s still in competition with Kaep. Kaep will be the starter week 1. Raiders fans, you haven’t been to the playoffs since 2003. Seattle “fans”, you’re new to the sport, so picking on you is just too easy. No wonder you call yourselves “12’s” this year; 1-2 in the superbowl.

  5. I mentioned this in another article but it bears repeating:

Gabbert has had half a regular season and a whole off season to steal the job and is still in a “competition” with guy who has had multiple surgeries and couldn’t participate in OTA’s. Kelly was brought in to utilize Kap, why put him at risk to re injure himself before the season starts.

  6. If he really has a tired arm the coaching and support staff on the niners have failed him. They need to be managing that sort of stuff before it becomes a problem. But those of you making jokes about this think again. Tired arm is like arthritis. You have good days and bad days. But it will never completely go away.

  7. “Is “arm fatigue”the new code phrase for “this guy sucks”?”

No, it’s the new code phrase for “Kaep’s arm can’t keep up with Chip’s frenetic pace”.

    ***********************************************************

Kap is garbage and so are the 49ers. Deal with it.

  9. So, when Kaep is able to practice/play again, I take it he’ll be on some kind of pitch count?

  10. It’s hilarious that Raider trolls are talking smack about any team let alone one who has more recent success than they’ve had in over a decade. You can’t even mention their “home” city as it changes frequently. It must not only bug them that Santa Clara is a better place than Oakland but to perpetually live in San Francisco’s shadow lets their jealousy pour through.

  11. Remember when people were ripping Elway for not trading to get Kaep? Lmao. Smartest gm in the business.
