Belichick not adding another quarterback, yet

AP

The Patriots currently have three quarterbacks on the roster. In three weeks, one of them will be exiled from the franchise for a month. However, the team currently has no plan to add another quarterback.

Asked by reporters on Sunday whether the team has discussed adding another quarterback, coach Bill Belichick told reporters, “We’ve talked about it but we’re where we’re at. We are where we’re at right now.”

Does Belichick believe it’s important to have another quarterback in addition to Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Jacoby Brissett?

“Well, I think it’s a question of who it is,” Belichick said. “I don’t know that there are a lot of Hall of Fame players just sitting out there not on any team right now.”

Belichick then was asked about getting a Doug Flutie or Vinny Testaverde-type player, similar to what Belichick has done in the past.

“Those guys retired a decade ago,” Belichick said, taking the question way too literally and possibly eliciting a justifiable muttering by the reporters assembled.

  1. In the event that both Brissett and Jimmy G. go down in one of the first four games, even money says Edelman goes under center.

Honestly, I’m not worried about QBs, the horrific schedule of playoff opponents, and whatever else. Just please show me the O-line can handle L.A., Seattle, Denver, Baltimore, Buffalo, NY and Miami — who have been beefing up for TB and co for years now. It’s all on the O-line, the success of the entire season. Beyond pulling DS out of retirement, BB’s seemingly casual attitude toward it is maddening. I was half hoping they pulled a swap for Bosa

  2. Jerry will be willing to give you Dak for your next 11 number one’s. Which may turn out to be a bargain considering the number of times the Patriots get caught cheating and don’t have a number one.

  3. Julian Edelman is QB option #3. Julian Edelman has thrown more post season TD passes than the other three starting QB’s in the AFCE

  4. Who did the reporter actually have in mind? Hasselbeck? Vick? I’m trying to think of veterans who are out there . . .

  5. Seems a lot of you football experts were calling Garoppolo a reliable answer for the Pats while mocking the Cowboys for not getting a vet? Odd, since so many of you know SOOOO much about the game of football?

  6. I was surprised they didn’t bring a vet in. MFlynn has been in camp and learned the offense. Who knows, maybe he doesn’t want to play FB anymore

  7. some of you guys are gonna be livid when the Pats go 4-0 without Tommy…looking forward to chippy, skawh and that Broncos loser to offer their armchair analysis

  8. Why do you people who constantly bleat cheating mostly have screen names that don’t identify the team you are a fan of ?

I’ll answer that for you. Because you know very well that every team in the league has been repeatedly caught doing naughty things the last 20-30 years, some of them far more often than the Pats.

So if you identify the team you follow, then all this mindless bleating of cheater would have to apply to the team you’re a fan of as well.

You can’t have that can you?

By the way, that’s called a double standard and invalidates any complaint you have about the Pats.

  9. If he signed Manziel then all the Pats millennial age fans who use the word “haters” in every reply would call it a low risk move and Belichick a genius for doing it.

  10. The haters live in a fact-free delusion. We actually have someone with an obtuse reference above to Dallas owner Jerry Jones by just saying”jerry”, like he’s “Lebron”.

The Dallas Cowboys haven’t been relevant since well before the turn of the century and their owner is the reason for the franchise’s demise.

  11. I don’t care who the trolls are fans of. Truly. I don’t even read their lame posts. Surprised anyone does. They get their jollies by baiting you. Weird, but true. Why respond?

You are absolutely correct, Belichick would want him up on the so called cheating tactics. Of course as a Giants guy even I know that to a Ravens fan knowing the rules is a cheating tactic.

  14. I;m amused at the trolls trying to bait us. The fact is if their teams could compete, they wouldn’t waste their time posting here. We are really blessed to have this franchise.

  15. NE was able to just steal the other teams signals???? Wow. Other teams must be really stupid.

  16. Brady had one TD pass, but it was all about stealing defensive signals. Seriously, how stupid is that post? It’s like steeler fans whining when they lost theAFCC gm at home due to 2 special team TDs by the Pats. Or raider fans crying about the correctly called tuck rule. Seriously folks, these people are children.

Just like baseball, football teams try to figure out the oppositions signs, etc. I guess that’s why OC’s & DC’s cover their mouth with their play sheet to keep those big bad Patriots from figuring them out…Great comment there jchipwood.
I still wonder if NE cheats so consistently and good why don’t they go undefeated and win the SB every year?

How are those PSI reports coming Rog…?

  18. Since half the troll posts are probably from the same two trolls what difference does it make what team they say they root for?

    Oh cippybeachgamecrash you so funny.
Bill Walsh, Joe Gibbs and even your cheatin Teflon Don had guys trying to steal signals and all of them admitted it

  20. Great reports girls…can I get some evidence? I mean every fan has evidence of Belichick cheating. So whatever you say your coach is still a cheat.

  21. I love coming to patriots article comment threads and finding chippy every time….lol can you show me on this doll where the patriots hurt you? Get a life man

  22. “We’ve talked about it but we’re where we’re at. We are where we’re at right now.”

The trolls will never understand why, but us Patriots fans just love comments like this. It’s classic Belichick.

    Read a book.

  24. Edelman, who switched from QB to WR in college, would be the emergency-QB but don’t forget Amendola was a perfect 1-1, 36yds last season! But with BB he might well just unveil both as his two-QB set.

Or go with a no-QB set, with direct snaps to Gronk, Dion, Blount and Bennet all in the backfield at once, and Chris Hogan fake-punting a few times…opponents will be wishing they had a 12th timeout by the end of the first quarter…

But the point is, does anyone really think BB hasn’t foreseen this possible situation when you have? Do you really think he hasn’t penciled-in a contingency or 3?

  25. It’s funny, Patriots fans are the ONLY ones who care at all about what team a commenter is a fan of. What difference does it make when the completely impartial second circuit confirmed that Brady is in fact a cheat and upheld his suspension?

  26. Garopalo really is a joke and Brady lost the last 3 out of 4 times he took the field. Toms a nice guy who will be sitting for the 1st 4 games. Have a nice day.

  27. Not a Pats fan or hater. Just offering a possible explanation for BB’s response to the question of a 3rd QB

Two or three weeks ago might have been a good time to ask the question (when the news about Brady’s suspension was still news)

Two or three weeks from now might be a good time to ask the question (after 3-4 pre-season games and a wave of roster cuts).

But days after the first pre-season game is a particularly stupid time to ask the question. Saying “yes, we are looking into that” would be interpreted as a vote of no confidence for Jimmy G and Brissett, with no real game action to base it on.

It was a childish, third-rate attempt to stir controversy, and BB turned on it like a hanging slider.

No. You’re wrong. But you knew that already. The court confirmed the Commissioner had the right through bargaining the CBA that he indeed could do whatever, whenever, to whoever. When you’re judge, jury and arbiter like the NFLPA foolishly gave the Commissioner of football the power to be, proof isn’t necessary. There wasn’t, isn’t or ever will be evidence that game balls deflated except by natural causes. Brady didn’t cheat. You know that. Smart football fan like you has to know that. You know what a real cheater looks like don’t you? Wears 58 for your team.

Hysterical. If you’re going to whine that the Patriots are cheaters, please get your facts straight. Video taping and stealing signals is not a violation and be clear, every team does this, fact. The Patriots had a camera outside of the designated taping area, that’s it, so stop with all the fake outrage about taping signals.

Because it’s interesting to see which teams fans are more focused on making up lying accusations against other teams rather than expounding on their own. It helps us gauge the opposition. Lining up your excuses this early is a huge sign of weakness. You are Bronco’s right?

  31. Even if the Patriots did cheat, they have stopped and paid their debt to society. TOM didn’t pay his fine because the owner redid his contract he has no control over it.

TOM should have been found innocent anyway. Haters are jealous that we always find a way to win.

  32. as in life, the name of the person who asked the question is vital. we need to know who is a tool or is acting like one. so we can judge them as much as the gossips are judging bill. it’s called a level playing field.

great answer by bill and great for IGNORING the gossip writer’s use of the word “type” to essentially repeat the same question.

  33. Like the media and fans commenting on Belichick roster moves actually know a damn thing.

Push back the recliner, loosen the belt on that fat gut, grab a another beer and handful of salty trans fat, enjoy the high school fantasies; and let the Greatest Coach and GM of all time handle the part where you build and coach a roster that actually has to play at the highest level and give you a record in the real world.
