Irsay hints Colts sat Luck because Rex blitzes too much in preseason

AP

The Colts did not play quarterback Andrew Luck in Saturday’s preseason game in Buffalo, and Bills coach Rex Ryan’s blitzes may be the reason.

Colts owner Jim Irsay took to Twitter before the game and appeared to take a shot at Ryan. Irsay’s tweets are always inscrutable, but he appeared to be suggesting that the Colts were concerned Ryan’s defense would take unnecessary shots at Luck in a glorified scrimmage.

“It’s a long preseason and two home games are coming . . . Look for No. 12 to make his first start then instead of tonight,” Irsay tweeted (with somewhat less legible spelling). “My good friend Rex has never heard of the word preseason.”

Asked about Irsay’s comments after the game, Ryan declined to discuss Irsay directly.

“I don’ t know, take a look at the tape. See how many times we blitzed,” Ryan said. “I can tell you one thing, Chuck Pagano’s a good friend of mine, legitimately good friend of mine. I have way more respect for him than I do others.”

Ryan didn’t say whether Irsay is one of the “others” he has less respect for. We’ll have to read between the lines for that. Just as we always have to when reading Irsay’s tweets.

  1. I certainly don’t blame the Colts. This is how Wrecks always declares his team the preseason SB champs, he plays preseason like it’s regular season, leaves his starters in, blitzes, etc. etc…….it’s what allows him to keep his hype train moving.

  2. “We don’t like it when football coaches try to pretend this transparent sham of a cash-grab called a preseason involves providing entertainment for our paying customers,” said Irsay as he inspected the Colts’ 2015 AFC South Runner-Up banner.

  3. Well I mean, does anyone respect Irsay? No need to read between the lines on that one, it’s a given.

  4. I consider Rex a dope, however, it is his job to get his team ready for the season. If blitzing a lot is part of that, so be it. Unless the QBs are wearing the red “don’t touch” jerseys, it is game, and play it like one.

This what is truly galling about Kraft’s comments. Because of Spygate it became obvious that the Pats and other teams were allowed to cheat because the NFL had the standard of proof of conclusive. Basically the NFL had to catch them red handed. It is also obvious that prior to Spygate, the NFL showed no real desire or the other organizations had any real desire to stop it. When Spygate broke and what the commissioner did to save the NFL from a a congressional investigation is quite a feat. He realized and made his points clear to the owners and coaches that the integrity of the shield has to be maintained because if it isn’t, they will lose the public’s confidence in the game. No football fan should ever have to wonder if their team was out cheated or question the final score and the stats of that game. So Goodell lowered the burden of proof, made it manditory that if violations were occurring they were to be reported immediately and that all had to fully cooperate with an NFL investigation. For the Krafts to now yell how unfair that Brady was punished because the proof was not conclusive goes to show you they have no interest regarding evey football fans right to watch a fair football game.
    —————————————————————
Kind of doesn’t much matter what you write anymore limakey. You have proven over and over that you are just another of Goodell’s bogus PR minions and probably one of his brothers. In either case, you are just plain empty headed. The NFL lawyer admitted they had no evidence. He didn’t say he had a lower burden of evidence. He said they had none.
What Kraft stated were facts. Something you don’t understand. History will show Goodell was a liar and an incompetent commissioner. And that Brady was honest and the greatest quarterback of all time. Those facts will out live your groundless blatherings. So enjoy your family gatherings with brother Roger and toast each other on your vain, amoral successes. They mean nothing.

  8. Ha, lingering concern about re-hurting those ribs!

By the way Mr Integrity, how is your investigation into the Colts’ misleading injury reports on Luck going? Quite a pile of Colts stuff still to do what with their piped noise (3 or more occurrences), the Suck for Luck campaign, underinflated balls, carrying needles on the sidelines, using needles on the sidelines….

  9. The only season the Bills can win is the off season and Wrecks has already declared victory.

  11. This is the first time in five years that the Colts aren’t going into a season with Luck/Hasselbeck as their 1-2 at QB. Matt Hasselbeck has retired and the Colts really want to see the other backups in action. Andrew probably only needs about one pre-season game to get ready for the season (it was the same for Hasselbeck). Jim Irsay is just having fun. That’s a good sign. The Colts are primed for a super bowl victory this year, and Mr. Irsay is loving life.

  12. And, of course, Pagano later lied when he said sitting Luck was his decision. Just a bunch of cowards and liars throughout that Indy team.

  13. I couldn’t care less. Keep 12# out until week one. Preseason games are pointless for top talents.

And how many starting QB’s sat this week? Rodgers, Romo, Brady.. I’m sure there’s at least a few more.

  14. my guess is rex and pagano had an agreement prior to the game as to what would be the parameters.

and its my guess that pagano made his decision, without the assistance of jimmy irsay.

and with rex you never have to read between the lines.

Calling it a product is an insult to even a baboon’s intelligence. This has stopped being a product since Goodell took over. There is more action on Madden 16 than you seen on the field today. But as they say, suckers are born every day.

  17. You guys, last night I saw the Chargers take on the Titans in a preseason showing WORSE THAN MY HIGH FOOTBALL GAMES FOR ENTERTAINMENT VALUE.

I’m not watching preseason anymore. The NFL needs to produce a better product.

Huh? Are you serious? By the very definition of the word the NFL is a product. It is produced, sold, and consumed in HUGE quantities. Oh, and news flash, Madden is a HUGE product of who? The NFL mensa man. How some people even grasp the meaning of a stop sign alludes me.

  19. That’s because the Colts are so Charminy soft 🙂

Too bad the 4 time World Champion Patriots won’t get a chance to punch those weaklings in the mouth this year.

Or for a while…since it’s the Jaguars division now.

    🙂

  20. Hey the preseason is still part of the offseason and we know that rex is all about winning the offseason…

You know Rex and the Bulls beat you last year in the regular season right

This dude used to be a Cowboys fans and when the Patriots started winning Super Bowls he jumped on that bandwagon. His credibility is nil.

Worst post ever, and that’s saying something with Joe (not good enough to be American) Toronto.

And the saying is there’s a sucker born every minute

  23. obviosly ryan should read, and judge irsay’s statement for himself.

would not rely on the town gossip for dissemination of anything. hopefully that is obvious by now.

  24. To all the teams on the Colts schedule this season:

Take note that the team’s owner doesn’t feel confident enough in his team’s offensive line to handle blitz packages so you know what to do!

I’m glad It says dad didn’t treat preseason like two-hand touch.

Please check your facts before posting. In the past 20 years (1997-today) the Bears beat “your” Patriots 5 time out of 6 The Packers beat “your” Patriots 4 times out of 6, including beating them in the Super Bowl.
They are lucky that they aren’t in the NFC North.

  26. In the past 20 years (1997-today) the Bears beat “your” Patriots 5 time out of 6

Must be a different Bears than the ones from Chicago… cause those Bears haven’t beaten NE this century and are 1-7 against NE since Super Bowl 20.

  27. The Colts are a joke, same team that hung a banner appearing in an AFC Championship game

  28. I seem to remember the Bengals having the se issue with Ryan in a recent preseason. Obviously preseason injuries are the last things teams want, so to blitz on a fairly regular basis in meaningless games is asinine and goes against unsaid rules.

  29. Irsay and Grigson are victory repellent. Let them set the tone. Circling the drain.

  30. It is funny to me how so many Patriots fans are still living in the shadow of Peyton Manning’s Colts teams of a decade ago.

Oh yeah, because the “revenge tour” ended in humiliation at the hands of the empty shell that was once Peyton Manning. You guys are so sad, trying to talk about “greatest of all time” when your precious cheater boy isn’t even the greatest of his generation

  31. Patriot fans are proud of our 4 super bowl wins with Tom Brady, one of the greatest to play the game. Tom has never been humiliated in a super bowl, unlike the year Denver( with HGH @ QB) lost to Seattle 43-8, the same team Tom beat the very next year in an epic 4 th quarter comeback 28-24.
Seems to me Colts fans are the ones living in HGH Manning’s shadow.

When did that ever happen? When did Rex physical manhandle any cheats in January? For that matter when did he ever do it to any NFL teams either? Yet you say it’s “as usually”?

As far as the complaints from Colts fans about people commenting on how the Colts complain a lot….there is such a history.
