Steelers QB Bruce Gradkowski out with torn hamstring

The Steelers may be in the market for another quarterback soon.

According to Jeremy Fowler of, veteran backup Bruce Gradkowski has a “sizable hamstring tear” which could keep him out a significant amount of time.

He suffered the injury in the preseason opener against the Lions, and coach Mike Tomlin would only say he would “be out a number of weeks.”

Gradkowski had ceded the backup job to Landry Jones, and this would be the second straight year he’s missed with injuries if they put him on IR. He missed all of last season with shoulder, hand and finger injuries. He re-signed this offseason to a one-year deal.

Of course, if the Steelers are looking for someone they know, they could always call Michael Vick, who continues to remind people he’s available. Vick started three games for the Steelers last year, though that might have convinced them to not re-sign him.

  1. He’s done as a Steeler. They are intrigued by Dustin Vaughan as a possible 3rd stringer, enough so that Bruce might not have made the team even if healthy. Grad just can’t stay healthy.

  2. Meh I hate seeing guys get hurt, no matter who they post for. Gradkowski hasn’t aged well from an injury standpoint though. Ben was healthy for two seasons in a row or he might have had to quit earlier. He’ll be great in the sportscaster’s booth though.

I think Pittsburgh will wait until the cut dates and see if someone good enough and affordable enough becomes available. Sooner or later someone always does. Until then, the next man up is this guy Vaughn, who kinda looks like Landry Jones did two years ago. That’s not a good thing.

Gradkowski was solid and legit when he was healthy, and I wish him all the best in whatever he decides to do going forward with his life.

    Go Steelers!

  3. Last year he tore a ligament in his hand falling on a fumble and this year he tears his hamstring falling to the ground on a run. What a joke. Please stay far far away from Michael Vick.

  4. If Ron Jaworski was “The Polish Rifle,” Gradkowski could be “The Polish Popgun”

  5. This guy can join Maurkice Pouncey in the ‘can’t stay healthy for more than 15 minutes’ sweepstakes. I can’t believe that the Steelers have not handled their backup qb situation any better than they have. Do they think Ben is going to last forever?
