49ers sign Christian Ponder

With Colin Kaepernick ailing and Thad Lewis done for the season, the 49ers have added a veteran to the quarterback room.

Christian Ponder has signed a one-year deal with San Francisco. Ponder takes the 90-man roster spot the 49ers opened up by putting Lewis on injured reserve.

Ponder has been out of the NFL since the Broncos cut him in December. Before that he spent some time with the Raiders. Ponder started 36 games in four seasons with the Vikings, who drafted him in the first round in 2011.

In addition to Ponder, the healthy quarterbacks in San Francisco are starter Blaine Gabbert and rookie sixth-round draft pick Jeff Driskel.

Ponder suddenly wakes from nap on couch, brushes Ring Ding crumbs off chest, and springs up.

    “Its Go Time.”

  2. Good call. Ponder and Gabbert are good buddies from back in 2011 when they trained together prior to the draft. They’ll work well together, and Driskel will benefit as well.

Now to get rid of Squid.

  3. Wow did you read that? Vikings drafted him in the first round??? Crazy. Vikes have a hapless history of drafting 1st round QB busts. Nothing currently appears to be turning that trend around. LOL (I added that lol to be like the Vikings troll)

  4. With the first pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select…DeShaun Watson, Quarterback, Clemson.

  5. Whose got it better ? Almost everybody other than the 9ers.

Boy does this signing smack of desperation.

  6. Always looked like a deer in the head lights when he stared at the pass rush, I’m sure has made Jim Everett blush. Looked to run every time his first read was covered and was surprising quick, Packers some how made him look like a world beater week 17 of the 2012 season SMH.

  7. “Ponder is this generations Jon Kitna.”

Nope, Kitna was actually a decent QB when he had decent players around him.

  8. A once proud franchise that had back to back hall of famers at the QB spot.
    Now. This crowd.
Like the Steelers in the 80’s. We used to start Bubby Brister.
It took twenty years. But the stank wore off.

  9. Wow, somebody threw his name out in the Cowboys article when Moore went down and I joked Samantha had a better shot of making an NFL roster currently. Hopefully those words go down smoothly with a nice Sauvignon Blanc.

  10. Wow, sorry about that 49ers fans. I think you might have a bit of a problem at the QB position….

  11. Ponder should do well in Chip Kelly offense. He’s a good athlete, beat Kaepernick in 4 of 6 events at the Combine, and a lot smarter than Kap. Interestingly, looking at the combined 2011/2016 QB results, Gabbert and Ponder finish top 10 in every event, and the only 2016 prospect to crash the party is Jeff Driskel.

  12. I had no idea that he was even on the Broncos’ roster last year. At this point, this guy is only known for his wife.

Funny… He beat the Packers! What does that say about your hapless squad? Teddy also beat the Packers on his way to another NFC North Championship, which by the way, is more than any other team in the division. How did the Packers do at Lambeau last year? They got beat by every team in the division.

Actually neither of them are. If they were, or if Charlie Whitehurst had picked up the phone, Ponder would probably still be carrying his wife’s purse even as we speak.

If GB is so hapless why do the Vikings gave a 5-13-1 record vs. Gb since 2007 with those 2 wins you mentioned counuti ng for 40% them. The Jets have beat the Patriots more during that same span.

My God man, this is hilarious.

    Patterson. Hands down, Patterson.

  22. Its amazing how fast you can go from super bowl to laughing stock. as a Raiders fan i know.

  23. Maybe they should take a look at Jeff George or Todd Marinovich? Oh yeah, Jamarcus may still be on the board.
The niners today remind me of the days when the Morabito widows ran the team. Bring back Eddie “D”. He knew how to get-er done!

  24. He may be the best QB on SF’s roster. I still remember that week 17 game in 2012 when he lit up my Pack like a Christmas tree for 3 TDs and a 120 passer rating. Granted our defense is historically bad but he really schooled us that day.

  25. Not much left to cover the next round of QB injuries. Jimmy Clausen, anyone? Matt Flynn? Charlie Whitehurst?

  26. Yep. Rip on Ponder all you want. But this Packer fan watched this guy get pounded into shreds by a line that couldn’t protect him and he just kept bringing it bloodied and all. Great arm and granted he wasn’t great at making decisions but I am not sure he was ever had a chance given the environment he was in.

Patterson is the best kick returner in the league, so he actually contributes something to the team. What have those other guys done?

  28. Well don’t stop now; bring in Locker while you’re at it.
3 1st rounders and a 2nd in camp at the same time would be amazing!
Has there ever been a collection of QB talent like that on one team? Ever???
    The Chipster; ’nuff said.

  29. None of those people ever received anything near the preordained hype that Patterson received. He’s the most expensive kick returner in the league, if that’s true.

  30. It’s like they are trying to collect the worst quarterbacks. Even Jeff Garcia today would be better oh lord

  31. Yeah, as noted above, the Pack has never screwed up draft picks (Harrell, Sherrod, Perry, Jones, et al) . And AJ Hawk, who was as slow as my grandma and tackled about as well, wasn’t hyped at all for a top 10 pick right? Go back to poking us with the lack of a Super Bowl win guys — you actually have a logical position for that one.

  32. Ponder instantly has a shot at starting!

  37. Kaepernick will never step foot on the field again as a 49er, so this was a good move.

Failing that, I bet the Eagles would settle for a box of Rice-a-Roni.

  42. Terrel Pryor should not have given up on being a QB. He is better than any of these guys. Ponder was horrible in Oakland like 100 years ago.

  43. I’ve been saying since last year, before he got benched, that “The Man” is gone 49ers this season, and from the NFL next year.

Meanwhile everyone was saying how 1, 2nd rounders, all-pro players and multiple trade offers were coming in. Not. 7 is hammering checks pure and simple and this weak arm act is purely to lay a claim to next year’s salary. Watch.

Best KR in a league when the the league is going to make it obsolete. Even if he is the best KR those players contribute to more plays on one drive than Patterson will in a game.

Flash is awesome, I especially liked when he high stepped into the end zone on the kick return when vikes were down by like 35. All class.

  47. At least they should be in position to draft a real QB next year. Keep Gabbert as a backup who knows the system, send Kap to “Suddenly Lost-it City” (where he can hang out with Matt Schaub and Josh Freeman). Make Driskel a TE- he has proven through the years that he doesn’t throw very well, but he’s huge and one of the fastest QBs from the 2016 class.

  48. You know I’d love to see Ponder make it. The guy has all the physical tools, a very strong arm, and he is one of the classiest guys on the Planet.
I just wish he could put the mental part with his arm…
Good luck Christian, perhaps a couple years up north throwing 50 times a game would help. Look at what it did for another class act Doug Flutie! But with their QB situation he just could end up starting for a few games

Figures the Packer Trolls would jump in on this
to talk smack against the Vikings, I am begging you, your material is getting awfully old!

  49. packers0and16,
I also would like to see Ponder make it. He’s just a good guy.

But I have to disagree on your assessment. He does NOT have a “very strong” arm. I think it is medium to strong in terms of being able to throw it with pace and measured by a gun or something. But in practical football reality I always felt like he NEVER stepped into it and zipped it.

Anyway, can’t get over how much abuse people heap on this guy when his name comes up.

Really he is a guy who performed VERY well when he had protection and the running game was working.

And don’t forget how he took it to the 49ers in that 2012 game. Might have a LOT to do with the reason they signed him.

    21 of 35 for 198 and 2 TDs and ran for one…

    _______

To be fair, Peppers was jacked up on PEDs.

  51. The front office did not waste anytime signing a backup, probably because Kap has a sore shoulder. Ponder had one good season and guided the Vikings to the playoffs as a rookie. Another reason for signing him may be because 9ers rookie Driskel did not play well in the first preseason game. Not sure if he can regain the form he showed as a rookie or not.
