The Titans will host the Panthers on Saturday in a preseason rematch of a game that the Panthers won 27-10 last season.
The comfortable Carolina victory was notable for the Titans taking issue with Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s familiar post-touchdown dancing. Titans linebackers Avery Williamson and Wesley Woodyard confronted Newton in the end zone after a score, leading other players to get between them and head off any possibility of a fight.
Williamson and Woodyard say that they don’t expect any fireworks this time around. Williamson said he was upset about the score and the length of Newton’s gyrations, but that what’s in the past will remain there. Woodyard had a similar message.
"[Newton] is a crowd-pleaser,” Woodyard said, via the Tennessean. “That’s what Cam does. That’s why he’s one of the faces of the NFL. We welcome that, just not on our territory. But that was last year. We look forward to this year.”
After that game last season, Newton offered the simplest plan to deal with displeasure about the way he reacts to touchdowns. Newton said teams that don’t want him to dance shouldn’t let him score and we’ll see if the Titans do a better job on that front this time around.
