Sanchez says his “ruined an opportunity” comment was misinterpreted

After losing two fumbles in Saturday’s preseason game, Broncos quarterback Mark Sanchez was hard on himself, saying, “It’s difficult playing like crap on two plays and ruining an opportunity.” But Sanchez says he’s still feeling positive.

Asked about those comments on Wednesday, Sanchez said he doesn’t think he ruined his opportunity to become the Broncos’ starting quarterback. Instead, Sanchez just thinks he ruined two opportunities for the Broncos to score in their preseason game against the 49ers.

“I squandered an opportunity that game,” Sanchez said. “It wasn’t like, ‘OK, that’s it, throw in the towel.’ I think a lot of people interpreted it that way, but that’s never been my attitude. I don’t quit. I’ll take this thing down to the wire if that’s what it takes, and that’s what it looks like, so let’s go.”

Sanchez may not have ruined his opportunity to earn the starting quarterback job, but he certainly didn’t help his chances. Trevor Siemian has clearly taken the lead in the quarterback competition and will start the third preseason game. And Sanchez may have even fallen behind rookie Paxton Lynch for the No. 2 job.

The Broncos can save $3.5 million in salary by cutting Sanchez, and they would also save the seventh-round draft pick they traded to the Eagles because the trade is conditional on Sanchez making the team.

If Sanchez doesn’t make the most of his opportunities this week, he could be gone next week.

  1. I’ll take this thing down to the wire if that’s what it takes, I still have at least one buttfumble left in me.”

  2. Mark…it’s what you do. You look average to above average for a few plays and then you do something that makes you look like a rookie again. You are the Latino Matt Cassel.

  3. Not sure what it is with Mark. The drops, misreads and pics has become a reccuring theme.

    Is it:

a.) Inability to focus due to laziness?
b.) Inability to focus due to an undiagnosed medical issue; too many concussions, etc.?
c.) Doesn’t spend enough time in the film room studying defenses?
d.) Lost his passion for the game and just in for the money?
e.) A combination of some or all?

    What’s the problem?

  4. good luck dirty! you played good in a few games and horrible in others.
The red zone INT’s really killed us when you were running the offense.
BUT I will never forget the schlacking you applied to the cowturds on Thanksgiving night a coupla yrs ago though!!

  5. Sanchez is a gamer with no game. He cares a lot and tries hard, but he’s a game manager at best. I think he’s a decent backup in this league.

  6. At this point in his career Sanchez is what he is going to be, a below average starter and an adequate backup and that isn’t going to change. That may still be enough in Denver though, it can’t be any worse than they got from the position last year

Evidently you’re unfamiliar with how he got his Buttfumble nickname. Ask any Eagles or Jets fan and they’ll tell you the dude is a turnover machine and melts down in critical moments, which is quite the opposite of being a “game manager”. He’s a decent backup for a game or 2 but Elway must’ve been smoking crack thinking Sanchez could be a year long placeholder and Dilfer the team back to the SB. He is what you’ve been seeing this preseason and that’s why he can’t beat a 2nd year nobody for the job. 9-7 because of Elway’s hubris.

  8. I dont recall Tebow fumbling all the time like this guy does….

    *********************************************************

He out played Tebow in Philly last yr, that’s why Tebow switched sports…. football fans everywhere thank Sanchez for that

  9. As annoying and unavoidable as his mistakes are, I can’t imagine them cutting him and running into the season with two qb’s who have one regular season snap between the two of them

His experience in preparation alone is needed.

…He’s used to holding a clipboard, too

  10. Mark, Mark, Mark….my eyes certainly didn’t misinterpret what they watched. Maybe Chipster made him nervous.

  11. Mark Sanchez always seems to be explaining away his mistakes and talking about how he’ll do better next time. Eventually, there is no next time.

Tim Tebow is bad at football. Career 47.9% completion percentage. FORTY SEVEN POINT NINE.

  12. I dont recall Tebow fumbling all the time like this guy does….

    ——-

Tebow had 14 fumbles his only season as a starter. Sanchez’s career high is 14 fumbles. Guess your recollection ain’t all that.

  13. Arguing about Tebow vs. Sanchez……

Its like debating whose sweaty socks smell worse.

  14. I still think the Broncos carry all 3 QB’s into the regular season. Can’t imagine a defending Super Bowl Champ would bench a 1 year player for a rookie half way through. Sanchez, for all of his warts, is still a capable veteran starter.
