Devon Still facing likely fine for knocking off Carson Palmer’s helmet

In Sunday’s Cardinals-Texans game, Houston linebacker John Simon made an athletic play on a screen pass, tipping the ball, catching it, and exploding for a long return to the end zone for a score. The more significant moment from a play in an otherwise insignificant preseason game came immediately after the interception.

Texans defensive lineman Devon Still, drafted by the Bengals months after Palmer decided he no longer was playing for the team, applied a helmet-to-helmet hit on Palmer as he lunged to make the tackle of Simon. The hit sent Palmer’s helmet flying.

(A current Bengal would say Palmer simply should have just run his ass back to the sideline.)

Even when a quarterback decides to try to make a tackle after a turnover, he can’t be hit in the head or neck area or with the helmet. The move, which didn’t draw a penalty flag on Still, will likely nevertheless result in a fine being imposed.

Palmer’s sideline demeanor suggested that he chipped a tooth on the play. Coupled with a pair of interceptions in limited work, Palmer’s 2016 isn’t starting much differently than his 2015 ended.

  1. if anything, palmer is the one who should be fined. taking off ones helmet while on the playing field is a penalty last time i checked. if he had buckled his chainstrap properly this never would of happened. reminds me of my old ball coach who used to ring our bells at the begining of practice to make sure every one had there helmet on properly. sadly due to the wussification of society they took his job cause a few pc parents got upset when there kids came home “concussed”. what has happened to our country?

  2. Carson Palmer may now have the second weakest arm in the NFL after Brady. Father time is brutal.

Did not know this is true. The league is further gone than I already thought. It is still tackle football, riight? If a QB needs protection in this situation he should just stay out of the play then. You can’t try to make a tackle and be treated like you are wearing a red practice jersey. Not fair to the opposing team trying to make a play on you.

    Palmer is a pick machine.

    TIA

  4. I’m not sure it was helmet to helmet. They came together at a 45 degree angle… Looks like it may have been shoulder to shoulder and it whipped his head around fast enough that the helmet came off. Hate to fine a guy on that one cuz it wasn’t a dirty kill the qb on a turnover type play… Palmer was trying to take the ball carrier.

  5. kamthechancellor funny you’re a Seattle fan and wanna call another team overrated. Forget the team as a whole every individual player for Seattle is vastly overrated

  6. no flag.. no penalty…good hit, if you dont want hit, then dont go for tackle…period
