Broncos name Trevor Siemian the starter

AP

Northwestern fans, unite.

Back in March, after Peyton Manning retired and Brock Osweiler defected to Houston and the Broncos busted the glass in event of emergency and traded for Mark Sanchez, a member of the organization told me that they really, really like Trevor Siemian. The person then told me to stop laughing, before pointing out that Siemian had a year in the system, and that he had a chance to learn from Manning and Osweiler.

They weren’t just blowing smoke. On Monday, Siemian was named the starting quarterback for Week One against the Panthers.

Whether the seventh-round pick from the Big 10 school that rarely contends in the Big 10 keeps the job remains to be seen. Last year, the Broncos were willing to yank Manning and, seven games later, to bench Osweiler. The moves worked, as evidenced by the gleaming silver trophy with a look and feel that has held up very well through five decades. Rookie Paxton Lynch eventually could be the quarterback in Denver for the rest of the current decade and beyond, but Siemian will get the first opportunity in 2016.

The next question becomes whether they’ll cut Sanchez before Week One, when his $4.5 million salary becomes as a practical matter guaranteed. For now, only $1 million of it is. Also, if they keep Sanchez beyond Week One, the Broncos will owe the Eagles a seventh-round draft pick.

At the top of the depth chart, Siemian is the guy. And the job now becomes getting him ready for the first test, which arrived in 10 days when the Panthers come to town.

  1. So I guess the in thing this year is to draft a QB really high and then not play him.

The Broncos are going to cut Mark Sanchez and as much as I can’t believe I’m saying this, I think my Bears should at least kick the tires. He can’t be any worse than Brian Hoyer.

  2. I am a Mark Sanchez fan, but stick a fork in him. He is done.

You can’t even beat out a guy who has no real NFL starting experience? And you’ve been in the league for HOW LONG?

No other C’Mon Man will top this right here.

  3. He was the only choice. Sanchez is Sanchez and will never have football smarts I always think back to the game last year against Miami when all the Eagles needed was a field goal to win and they are on the 15 and Sanchez forces a pass and it gets picked and they lost. Paxton lynch isn’t bad but if he starts to play bad you risk ruining his career forever by destroying his confidence. If Trevor plays bad you put in the rookie after 6 games and if he plays okay their defense has shown average QB play is all they need to win a Super Bowl.

  4. Will be interesting to see how all Manning’s understudies perform this season. Osweiler has looked good so far but Siemian is still a question mark. We know Kubiak is not exactly a QB whisperer, so any success Siemian has will be attributed to Manning.

  5. As a close friend of the organization I can echo the tune that they liked TS’s ability to read his progressions, run the bootleg and manage the game the way Kubiak likes it.

  6. So I guess the Sanchize’s comments last week weren’t taken out of context.

  7. Don’t turn the ball over. Hand off to C.J. Anderson and Booker, let the defense win for you. He can do that. If not put in Lynch who has the better arm and athleticism to make up for his lack of experience.

  8. So they’d be paying $5 million and a draft pick for their backup, possibly #3, QB?

    Cowboys on line 1…

  9. Not a surprise to me. Heard Jeff Legwold report that Bill Polian watching him in early training camp/OTAs & thought of him as a starting QB. Kubiak has a QB friendly system so while NO ONE is expecting the Broncos to score 30 a game, I think he’ll do alright with a running game & a great defense doing their thing.

  10. Florio, now you are on the Siemian bandwagon? Not one word from you until the coach tells the world that he is their guy for WEEK ONE.
Come week two you will jump to the Lynch bandwagon and by week four, you’ll be telling us that denver shouldnt have cut sanchez.

  11. How long before Buttfumble becomes a Cowboy? Also how long before Elway and Donks fans admit he made a mistake in thinking Buttfumble was a good enough placeholder until Lynch is ready? It was like Elway had never watched any of the Eagles or Jets games in the last few years.

  12. I think he’ll be good. I liked what I saw from him, good arm, good anticipation. No point in putting Sanchez in there, you know what you’ll get from him. Let this kid play and maybe he can grow into a quality starter. This team is built around the defense anyway. He’ll play the Wilson role, just don’t screw up too much and let the defense and run game do the rest.

  13. Most teams don’t do three QBs but the Broncos are in a situation where they just might. If Siemian would get hurt that would leave them with a rookie starter and it’d be nice to have a veteran to back him up without having to bring in some free agent who knew nothing about the team.

No clue if Sanchez is much of a teacher but it might also help Lynch to have a veteran third-stringer who can spend lots of time with him given Siemian will be busy prepping as the starter.

Wow, The Buttfumbler can’t even beat out a rookie.

But better than any QB you have in Toronto……..oh wait……..loser.

  15. Anybody ever heard of Tom Brady, Brett Farve, Derek Carr, or Russell Wilson before they got their first opportunity to start? Siemian looks poised, accurate, and even though he’s made some young QB mistakes, he’s learning, and learning fast. All those talking heads at NFL Network who’ve picked the Raiders to take the AFC West this year need to rethink that laugher. Denver takes it sixth straight AFC West title, and like I said last year at exactly the same time: once in playoffs, anything can happen.

  16. Congrats to Siemien, of course–he’s earned it. This is a lot like the Kyle Orton – Tim Tebow story, that remarkably also happened in Denver. That is, Denver spend a high pick on a possible future franchise QB (Tebow), and put him behind the more experienced low round (4th round) Orton. But the pressure was on Orton, who no matter what he did, people were in the background springloaded to call for Tebow. If Siemien doesn’t perform well through the first few games when NFL defenses actually change their looks and plan against offenses, there will pressure to put Lynch in, who may do worse year. Denver needs to rely on their D more than ever, or it will be a long year.

  17. This is Siemian’s chance to pull a Romo and become a real NFL QB. Otherwise, Lynch will be the guy sometime later this year or at worst next year.

  18. Kubiak’s system? What’s that, run on 1st, run on 2nd, dump off to the TE for a 5 yard gain on 3rd and 6?

Denver will have qb issues for a while. No sb repeat this year.
    ========

Why not? They won the SB last year with the worst QB play in the NFL.

    Wishful thinking?

  20. I love all of the people saying the Broncos aren’t a threat this year because of their QB situation. Um…….did any of you watch them play last year? Their QBs couldn’t play their way out of a paper bag. Look how that turned out.

  21. Drafted @ 250 out of 256. There is a reason he almost went undrafted. I am sure by week 3, we will all know that reason.

Yes to all of the above, and no I did not know that Tom Brady would be the Greatest NFL Player of All-Time, Brett Favre would be a HOF QB, Russell Wilson looks like he will have a HOF career, and Derek Carr is promising.

But I agree with your point that none of us know if Siemian or, for that matter, Dak Prescott or Jimmy Garoppolo are going to be any good.

Going to be a field day for the Panther’s defense!

    —————–

The way Cam played against the Patriots the other night the Panthers will be lucky to get a FG or two….

  25. We’ll give you Kaepernick for a case of beer and a couple of Rocky Mountain Super Pass Plus passes. Deal?

Maybe because he blew his knee out halfway through his senior season?

  27. Spock (Kubiak): “Captain Kirk, what does this mean?

Captain James T. Kirk (John Elway): “Spock, we will explore galaxies far away and dominate with Galatic Defense and Subpar Offense.

Spock (Kubiak); Captain, your appetite is too big for your plate!

Captain Kirk (Elway): Czekoff, full bearings to Foxborro. Target Belichick Compound. Secondary target, Brady’s Mind.

  28. All these comments about poor QB play last year. The QB does a lot more than you see. How many times did Manning audible because he read the defense? You have no idea. How much did he orchestrate the offense in game situations? You have no idea.

At least understand there is a dimension (or two or three) to the game you don’t see on RedZone and isn’t captured in fantasy stats.

I’m not a Bronco or Colts fan.

  29. Somewhere a tear is rolling down Mark Sanchez’ face.

Then he realizes how much he’s getting paid and that he’s still in the NFL and a big sunny smile breaks on his face.

And Brady was a 6th rounder. Romo went undrafted. Despite what haters say he is a top tier QB also. Check the Cowboys record with him and without him. I believe he wins well over 60% of the games he starts in the NFL. And Brady although overated is pretty good also…

  31. Romo better winning % than: Sham Newton, Brees, Rivers. E Manning, M Ryan C Palmer etc.

  32. Remember all the idiots who said the Broncos would suck because buttfumble?

  33. Remember all the morons who couldn’t believe Elway wasn’t going to pay Kap’s salary? Lmao.

Wow…out of 17 years worth of draft picks you managed to find two. Let’s just say his odds are not good.

  38. 6-10 record this season

Opening game next week: Panthers 27 – Broncos 6.

Sanchize blows. Semen blows. Broncos blows.

  39. I don’t understand how scouts evaluate college QBs. Tom Brady went in the 6th round. Joe Montana was the last player selected in round three. Trevor Siemian was a 7th round pick. I remember when some idiot named Belichick made the decision to go with the 7th round pick, and we all laughed. Now we’re laughing about Siemian. Move over Belichick. I guess John Elway’s going to take your place as the guy who’s not as smart as we are.

  40. So will the legion of people who have been life-long Broncos fans since Feb. 8 start screaming for Lynch after the Panthers defense makes mincemeat out of Siemian?

    Panthers 24
    Broncos 7
