Tebow had chance to change positions, instead he changed sports

Tim Tebow is trying out in front of baseball scouts today, in the first step toward getting himself back in professional sports after he realized that he has no future as an NFL quarterback.

But one of the odd things about Tebow’s decision to give baseball a shot is that he gave up on football before exploring every avenue available to him. According to former Buccaneers General Manager Mark Dominik, Tebow was afforded the opportunity to play H-back in Tampa Bay but said he was only interested in playing quarterback.

“I called & called agent Jimmy Sexton, begged him & Tim Tebow to come play H-Back for the Bucs but it was always nope, only QB,” Dominik wrote on Twitter today.

Dominik didn’t say when that happened, but presumably it was in 2013, Dominik’s last year as the Bucs’ G.M., when Tebow was cut twice, first by the Jets at the start of the offseason and then by the Patriots at the end of the preseason.

Tebow always struggled as a passer but had the athletic profile of a football player. He probably could have played H-back, fullback, tight end or maybe even linebacker in the NFL if he had wanted to. But he didn’t want to.

Now he wants to play baseball. He’s an extreme long shot to make it to the majors, which underscores how odd it is that he turned down an opportunity to keep playing in the big leagues of the NFL, albeit at another position.

  1. Can’t say I blame him. He’s played QB for years and won the starting job of a playoff team.

We can debate how good he is, but someone of that stature doesn’t just switch to HB.

That would be like telling Mick Jagger you’re going to sit in the corner and play bongos for Kesha’s touring band.

  2. Thank you Tim for WHOOPING the Steelers in the playoffs 🙂

You’ll always be in my good books for that.

    🙂

  3. That would be like telling Mick Jagger you’re going to sit in the corner and play bongos for Kesha’s touring band.

Isn’t playing baseball for a Venezuelan Winter ball team more equivalent to sitting in the corner playing bongos for Kesha than playing tight-end in the NFL?

  4. Football players, especially FB types are usually done in the NFL by the time they’re Tebow’s age though. Baseball players can play until they’re grandfathers.

  5. Not that QB is a non-contact position, but it sure involves a lot fewer hits than playing say H-back or tight end and definitely linebacker. Now lets look at baseball, he is almost certain to get zero hits in baseball so perhaps that is the key.
    (get it… zero hits)

  6. Career completion percentage: 47.9%. Given that modern NFL offensive schemes demand close to 60% just to function, and 65% for greatness, he may as well have demanded a pre-game dinner of roast unicorn along with a starting QB gig.

  7. It’s because despite all his talk, Tim Tebow loved being the star QB. If he can’t be the star, he doesn’t want to play.

  8. Because he is selfish and only thinks of himself…..Edleman was a college QB and didn’t hesitate when asked to move to WR, same with Pryor….these guys love the sport more than they love to be in the spotlight…..good riddance baseball, he’s your circus show now…..

  9. And he had the chance to go play in the CFL or Arena League as a QB, but he changed sports instead. Guess he wouldn’t allow his ego to do that

  10. That would be like telling Mick Jagger you’re going to sit in the corner and play bongos for Kesha’s touring band.

No offense, Tim’s a good guy, but he ain’t no Jagger of football.

  11. That would be like telling Mick Jagger you’re going to sit in the corner and play bongos for Kesha’s touring band.

Yes, except Tebow isn’t the NFL’s equivalent of Mick Jagger. He would be lucky to be the equivalent of one of Mick’s road crew.

These days he seems more interested in maintaining his celebrity status than anything else.

Hopefully he eventually just goes away.

  12. “Yes, except Tebow isn’t the NFL’s equivalent of Mick Jagger. He would be lucky to be the equivalent of one of Mick’s road crew.’

Except that’s an insult to the road crew. They every bit as good at their jobs as Jagger and company are on stage.

  13. Pride cometh before the fall. I’m not a particularly religious man, but I gotta give Jesus a fist bump on this one. Not like my Buc’s ever need to add another ring to the circus.

  14. Have always thought a change in positions would be a great move for Tebow. Though he might not be an NFL QB the dude is a FOOTBALL Player, and his knowledge of the game from the QB position would be an asset at TE or H-back.

  15. The reality of it is that Tebow does a lot of good for other people and that’s probably where his career focus will be from now on.

  16. When so many people tell you that you just aren’t an NFL QB, why not at least try h-back or tight end? He’s 29 now. Even if he were to get signed by a baseball team, he let his prime years pass him by.

  17. Sounds like unless he was playing QB, it wasn’t worth it for him to get his brain bashed around. He’d rather make his money on tv, books, speaking tours etc. Or trying to see if he can make it in baseball.

Not hard to understand. He will be a rich guy no matter what. So unless you love the position, no sense risking problems later in life.

  18. Terrelle Pryor has a great chance to be an NFL star because he was willing to change positions. Tebow, it sounds silly to say, was too selfish to admit that he had no future as an NFL quarterback.

  19. That would be like telling Mick Jagger you’re going to sit in the corner and play bongos for Kesha’s touring band.

It’s more like telling Kesha’s touring bongo player that he has a chance to be the lead guitarist. Tebow would have actually gotten a chance to be more productive on the field.

And, be honest: Tebow did NOT “win” the Broncos starting job. Kyle Orton wasn’t playing well and basically put himself out of a job in Denver.

  20. I’ll say this, everyone acts like it would have been so easy for him to trade positions to stay in the league but there is no guarantee he’d be any better at H back or TE than the other guys looking for work.

That being said, if he truly loved the game, he could have made that switch and worked at it and maybe been pretty good and back in the league. Not as easy a transition as people say but he’s had plenty of (wasted) time to make it happen.

Really??…. Tebow has 2 National Championships, 1 Heisman (should have one a 2nd), owned every major quarterback record at the time he graduated, and is generally considered one of, if not the, greatest College QB’s in history.
Yeah, he’s just like Edelman and Pryor…shm

  22. I swear he could have made a great LB / FB.

dude is all heart and is about 260. cmon

  23. This dude let his pride get in the way. And I rooted like heck for him to make it at quarterback. But, I would have rather seen him stay in the league and just been a good solid NFL player. I will NEVER understand why he wasn’t willing to give another position a shot.

You forgot Antwan Randel El and some others. Those guys were smart enough to know they couldn’t play QB in the NFL and changed so they could play football. Tebow is a fine human but he could have learned from these guys. His chance of making it in baseball are about the same as his chances of being a starting QB–slim to none.

  25. Changing positions sure worked out fine for Hines Ward, Antwaan Randle-El, Julian Edelman, and possibly even Braxton Miller.

It’s Tebow’s pride that prevented him from playing another position or playing in the CFL. Isn’t pride one of the 7 deadly sins? He’s just another in a long line of overtly religious hypocrites.

  26. Excuse me, Pryor didn’t hesitate to move to WR? What world are you living in? Teams and analysts were begging him to move to TE/WR but his ridiculous ego said no. He finally turned to WR once his career looked effective my over. I always thought he should have been a WR even when he was playing for Luckeyes.

And what does that have to do with being an NFL QB?

  29. Tebow could supplant many starting QBs now and certainly 1/3 of the backups. If MLB had good drug testing about 15% of the roster spaces league wide would open for him.

  30. meaning he’s better than many starters. Trevor Seemen? and for those teams that have starters locked up he’s better than 1/3 of the backups at a minimum.

He’s like them because he’s not good enough to be a QB in the NFL, put him in the college HOF if you want to, but the bottom line is every coach and GM he talked too told him he doesn’t have the skill level to play the position in the NFL…….so he goes to another sport smh…..

He didn’t say it had anything to do with being an NFL QB. If you were paying attention he was comparing him to Pryor and Edelman, and their willingness to switch positions. No offense to them, but those two weren’t half the QB, in college, that Tebow was.

  33. Tebow was always a joke… it was unbelievable that so many fans bought the hype

he will never amount to anything

  34. this really does make the baseball thing look so odd to me. if he truly loved the game he would do whatever it took to play, and what’s so bad about switching to Tight End? there are plenty of star players at TE

i guess god told him he was only allowed to play QB

  35. This isn’t rocket science. It all comes down to pay differential. Playing QB, even as a backup, pays better than H-back with much less wear and tear on the body (and head). Tebow didn’t have to play H-back to clear ~$500,000 a year, he can pull that down with his TV work and speaking fees.

Every major QB record at the time? I think not. They won a lot of games but it wasn’t because he was a great passing QB. His passing stats were nothing to write home about. Granted, he was a winner but the greatest college QB in history? No way. I’ll admit he was one of the best college QBs in history because he willed them to win games but you hit the nail on the head–college QB. There have been a lot of great college QBs who washed out in the NFL. In fact, some of the best QBs in college history as far as numbers were washouts.

    ————————–

Sure, but what about the past 3 years when he wasn’t playing or doing anything anywhere? Closer to 5 when you count time he spent riding the bench.

He might be done as a FB/TE NOW, but he could’ve been playing the past 5 years and earning an NFL paycheck he hasn’t earned since 2012.

He sure hasn’t spent the time honing his baseball skills. Maybe if he tried out for MLB in spring 2013 he’d be getting a big league callup on Sept. 1. Or maybe he’d be struggling in A Ball or out of the game already. Who knows, but he wasted a good 3 years in the interim.

Also, most baseball players are done by 35 (grandfathers in some places I guess but not many). There was a good article via the sister site here about why David Ortiz stands out so much and why Albert Pujols has the value of a bench player at 36. There was a long list of good players younger than Pujols who aged out of the game.

  38. Whatever…like hecouldnthave led last year’s Broncos team to the Super Bowl becausePeyton Manning was SO GREAT …ROFL…Whatever…Yeah he didn’t have Mannings COMPLETION percentage….like the completion SUPER BOWL RECORD that Manning Ser while getting ANNIHILATED by the Seahawks a few years ago. BAHAHA. YOU people and your stats….bottom line the modern day fantasy football phenomena of focusing on putting up numbers rather than focusing on grinding out wins hurt a player like Tebow chances of staying ok n league. No one can take away HIS RECOD OF MOST 4th quarter COMEBACKS IN ONE SEASON. I WILL TAKE THAT record over manning meaningless completion record ANY DAY.
