Steelers claim quarterback Zach Mettenberger off waivers

AP

Despite a career record of 0-10, which may or may not be his fault, there is still a market for quarterback Zach Mettenberger.

And it’s not one of the teams that had been previously linked to the former Tennessee starter.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, the Steelers have claimed Mettenberger off waivers from the Chargers. The Bengals and Giants had put in claims for him when he was cut by Tennessee earlier this offseason.

The Steelers seemed previously content with Landry Jones as Ben Roethlisberger’s backup, and they may still be. But after veteran Bruce Gradkowski suffered a torn hamstring, they were perilously thin at the position, with just Bryn Renner on the roster.

Jones also hasn’t been very good in the preseason, beyond the four-interception game against the Eagles.

  1. This is a good move. Landry Jones is to NFL quarterbacks what Bartman is to Cubs fans.

I was arguing for this back when the Titans landed Mariota. Good move.

Stop it! Hahahaha! Yeah, because he’s a real up-and-comer.
Keep fooling yourselves Steeler fans. When Ben goes down, it’ll be curtains. We witness it year after year.

Your user name gives you away as a troll but the comment is over the top. Do you even watch football or do you just spend your time trying to pick funny user names? Mettle burger was playing on a pretty poor team, but given the Sttelers weapons I think he would do very well

You must have not watched the 2-4th quarters against the Saints then, huh? 19 for 22 with a drop in there. Couple TDs.

Not saying he’s amazing, but he hasn’t played like garbage (save for the 4 pick game).

When any team’s starting QB goes down, it’s pretty much curtains. Very few teams can feel good about their depth at QB.

  5. This was a very smart move by the a Steelers. He is a Big Ben type guy who just needs a decent surrounding cast…..bet he does very well for the team.
