Cowboys could be facing scrutiny for timing of Mark Sanchez signing

Getty Images

The Cowboys, desperate for a backup quarterback, apparently moved more quickly than they should have to address their needs.

Per a league source with knowledge of the timing of the release of the NFL’s official transaction report for Saturday, September 3, the Cowboys face scrutiny from the league office for signing former Broncos quarterback Mark Sanchez before his release from the Broncos was officially communicated by the league to all teams.

While a technicality, it’s nevertheless a clear violation of the tampering rules, with the Cowboys contacting, negotiating with, and signing Sanchez while he was still officially the property of the Broncos. The bigger question is whether the NFL will do anything about it.

Patriots fans are watching and waiting.

  1. If The NFL wants to be perceived as fair-and they had better- they will take a draft pick or 2 from Jerry Jones’s team.
What a faux-pas, just wait a few hours at least for the purpose of appearance sake.

  2. First time two Mexican QBs on the same roster. Week in and week out. It’s going to be like Ryan Fitzpatrick’s wedding ring every damn game

  3. The smart money is they won’t stop the singing, perhaps a fine. Bill….he sign on the line, so no one else had a chance even if they had the time. Bill

  4. tampering with a player that was going to be cut? not likely especially since the broncos made it clear that he would be cut (they save $4.5 mil and keep conditional 7th rounder), if no trade partners were found –this has absolutely no merit.

  5. But how did it affect Tommy? Your tb12 PJs must be getting a little worn out and slippery in the footies to slide by a chance to directly relate this to Tom. You slippin’ bro.

  6. It’s particularly egregious because the Broncos were trying to trade him. Why trade for a player under contract who may be released when you can negotiate a contract directly with the player to ensure he doesn’t sign with another team? Well, because there are specific rules against it. This is a clear violation. Denver was also trying to get Sanchez to rework his contract. Tampering undermined all of it.

  7. What’s with the line “Patriots fans are watching and waiting.” Is there some relation with Sanchez signing with Dallas early or is that just a cheap, low blow to the Patriots?

Not to be nit-picky, you should write “Patriots’ fans” since “Patriots” is used as a possessive word.

  8. wow no thanks denver we dont want to give you a mid to late round pick for buttfumble but we will sign him early and give a 3rd and a 6th(penalty for the chiefs in there tampering) to the league office…

  9. Don’t suspend JJ media privileges, we need him to keep some excitement in the NFL away from the real games. Bill…Let Donald be, my bad, let Jerry be Jerry. Bill

  10. Herr Goodell is too worried about the missing NFL sticker on Brady’s helmet to deal with any real issues.

  11. Actually Patriots fans could care less 🙂

We don’t worry about inferior teams that aren’t going to be a threat to the 4 time World Champions 🙂

  12. Roger makes 50 million a year and Jerry is his biggest supporter. You tell me what is going to happen.

    This just in:

Sanchez was signed as per New Zealand time. It’s tomorrow there, so it’s all good.

  13. I thought If a team tampered, don’t they loose a draft pick, and that pick goes to the team they Tampered with?

Somebody’s going to have to take Jerry Jones privileges away LOL

  14. I believe the going rate for this is losing a 3rd round draft pick. But you know, NFL execs ride the Cowboys party bus so the league office says move along.. nothing to see here.

  15. so patriot fans feel persecuted huh? how about every time there is an article about the Cowboys (good or bad), the troll beacons are lit and every nitwit with a keyboard is an expert on nfl rules/regulations, morality and (my favorite) medical expert.

  16. Technicality schmechnicality. This is Jerry’s team and he needs an experienced quarterback after Romo’s injury, even if it’s the Butt Fumble.
    Take care of it Roger…

  17. KC is the team that is waiting to see what will happen, not the Patriots.

The Jets owner blatantly tampered with Revis on live TV in front of millions of people. They got a tiny wink wink penalty. KC, for doing much less, got nailed. Hmmmmm…for whom did Goodell used to work for?

Roger set a baseline for tampering with KC. The minimum Dallas’ penalty needs to be equal to the Chiefs’.

  18. Jerry forgot to hit the switch to the time-machine. Just a slight oversight, folks. Simple human error. Nothing to worry about.

  19. First it was Elway’s bad treatment and dumping of Tebow.

Next, it was the poor treatment and lack of respect by Elway that led to Osweiler dumping the Broncos.

Now, Elway signed and dumped Mark Sanchez.

Wonder if any new QB prospects will remember how Elway treats his players?

  20. Nothing will happen. We know how this is tilted. “Hey, Roger, where’s all the data from last year’s football pressure tests? You know, the tests you said you’d release the data from. Oh, you destroyed it all?”

  21. And there penalty should be that they have to play him at least 50% of the snaps of every game for 10 games…

    That’ll teach ’em Cowboy cheats.

  22. It’s widely known that Jerry Jones was a leading factor in Goodell going after Brady and Kraft. The Cowboys will skate without a slap. It very sad to see a franchise and an individual selectively punished for what amounts to a trivial issue that can’t be verified. You can’t make this stuff up.

  23. “Right, because there was sure to be a long line of other teams waiting for the chance to sign him.

tampering with a player that was going to be cut? not likely especially since the broncos made it clear that he would be cut (they save $4.5 mil and keep conditional 7th rounder), if no trade partners were found –this has absolutely no merit.”

And if the Pats had signed him in this situation I bet both of you along with everyone else saying this is no big deal would be screaming for a fine and lost draft pick.

That’s called a double standard by the way.

  24. good thing because you just know that there were multiple just chomping at the bit to get him signed. No discipline from the NFL is needed having Sanchez on your team is punishment enough!!

  25. No problem with punishing the Cowboy’s just make sure you punish tammy again for ripping sticker off his helmet.

  26. People like Jones believe the rules are for everybody…..but them!
They need to be docked a first round pick just like the Patriots. If they don’t there will be 31 teams livid at them!
And what do you mean technically it doesn’t matter? You CANNOT negotiate with a Player while he is on another team unless that team is compensated. so if they are found out to be guilty
the Broncos need to receive that pick taken.

  27. As a Patriots fan, I couldn’t give a damn. The Cowboys and Redskins already got screwed over by their ridiculous penalties for going over the salary cap in the uncapped year. What a farce that was, led by Mara.

“fair” went out the window long ago. But yes, they should get nailed just for their stupidity

  29. He must have a really great agent since highschool cuz this kid sucked and has been over rated since USC days.

    ———————-

It used to be that way until it was the NYJ tampering with a NE player (Revis) and Roger The Liar gave his BFF’s in NY a slap-on-the-wrist fine instead. Then he turned around and screwed KC out of a pick but he didn’t give it to PHI. This time? Who the hell knows when it comes to the Clown Prince of Commissioners.

  31. First it was Elway’s bad treatment and dumping of Tebow.

    ———————————————————————
We get it you don’t like Elway! If you think that Elway’s actions are any different than what any GM in the league would do and has already done you are delusional!

Bad Treatment of Tebow by acquiring a Hall of Fame QB? Apparently all the other 31 teams guarantee their players starting roles the following season?! Nice try buddy.

Lack of respect and poor treatment of Osweiler. Osweiler should be thanking Elway for allowing him to play seven games so he could bamboozle the Texans into overpaying him. Not too mention he offerred Osweiler 16M/season.

The dumbest comment was signing and releasing Mark Sanchez. Sanchez was all but guaranteed a starting gig as long as he didn’t screw it up. Sanchez screwed it up. You do realize that Sanchez fumbled the ball twice in two plays in the redzone in the preseason right. If anything Sanchez stole 1M from the Broncos.

Elway is the best GM in the NFL. 5 years as GM: 5 division championships, 2 AFC championships, 2 Super Bowl appearances, 1 Super Bowl championship. Between the 1st Super Bowl appearance and the 2nd appearance he completely remade the roster from an offensive team to a defensive one and even completely changed coaching staffs (even though the coach went 12-4 the previous season)and it
    all worked out!!!

  32. As a Patriots fan that knows Jerry Jones was instrumental in the Deflategate witch hunt, I would hope that Goodell will come down even harder for this actual violation of competition.

That means a loss of the team’s first and fourth round draft pick and a suspension. Jones should be suspended for a year because a year of losing Jones is not nearly as big a loss as losing Brady for four games.

  33. He hasn’t officially signed. A corresponding roster move has to happen prior to signing him. It just so happens that Sanchezs agent is also the agent for Garrett and several other members of the organization.

  34. Sanchez walks into a situation with THE BEST Offensive/QB Mind in league in Scott Linehan. Mark got a gift leaving the micromanaging Kubiak/Elway Regime and into an IDEAL situation. Elway and Kubiak are SHADY. Peyton and Brock realized this as well.

  35. what’s worse than signing Mark Sanchez to take on an important role on your team, a week before the regular season kicks off?

Facing a penalty for tampering charges for signing Mark Sanchez to take on an important role on your team, a week before the regular season kicks off

Were they really worried about beating the rush of teams going to sign Mark Sanchez, and had to get this done immediately?

I hope Jerry Jones lives forever….or at least 1 year longer than me

Right, because there was sure to be a long line of other teams waiting for the chance to sign him.

The Vikings gave up a 1st round pick (and another one) for Sam Bradford…

There might have actually been more interest than you think.

The question is – which is likely to get the more severe punishment: Cowboys tampering with another team’s player or Brady tampering with his helmet sticker?
    —————————————–
Brady, of course. Cowboys enjoy favored-nation status with the NFL front office.

  38. Has a contract actually been signed? The only stories I have seen with someone’s name on it, rather than our ever famous “league source”, says that the Cowboys are expected to sign Sanchez, not that they have actually done so.

But if it were KC, NO, the ‘Skins or the Pats then it would have merit, right?

  40. Same as the (League Protected) J-E-T-S $100,000 for tampering with Revis

Should be what ever KC and Detroit paid Plus some for #INTEGRITY

  41. They were really tampering with 2 teams not just Denver.

He was traded from the Eagles to Denver for a 7th round conditional pick. That pick would have still had to be handed over to the Eagles had he been traded from Denver to the Cowboys.

Both teams should file an appeal!

  42. As a Patriots fan that knows Jerry Jones was instrumental in the Deflategate
    _
Honest question, how do you KNOW this? I hear it batted around all the time but I’m not sure why people believe it.

  43. Cheaters! It’s well known around the league that they’ve been doing this tampering thing for years and years and years. (I read about it on the internet.) All their titles* are tainted as a result of this culture of cheating – from the top on down. What to do about that legacy? What about the children?

I can only hope that the pure-as-the-driven-snow heart of Her Moral Highness, brendafortheboyz, isn’t completely broken. So sad.

  44. “Patriots fans are watching and waiting.” You mean like you, Florio?

This is the same man nominated to Contributors NFL hall of fame? I hope they vote him down.

Boys should lose a low level pick for this, maybe a 7th, what Denver would have had to give Philly if not cut.

You need help. Professional help. Seriously.

  46. What? Doesn’t the league have to approve the signing of Sanchez like all transactions? All the out of work comedians aside, all the league has to do is not approve it. The league is the one with egg on their face. Guess Florio’s snitch wanted to point fingers elsewhere.

  47. Typical of Jerry ( I don’t know what I am doing) Jones of trying to cheat. He can’t even do that well. Now he has the butt fumbler, good luck with this.

  48. if Woody Johnson had said, “We’d love to have Darrelle back………for $5 a season”. Is it still tampering? Johnson never brought up $$$$$. Every team in the NFL would love to have Revis, but unless we are talking a dollars who cares? We are lowered to this generic and obvious, “I can’t answer that question bla bla”. Every reporter knows that so why ask the question? It was probably one of Bellicheks operatives baiting Johnson. Special treatment? The league office has not been to our stadium to destroy volumes of videotape for a slap on the wrist. Please.

  49. This is for thefootballgodssay:
Cowboys and Redskins were fine 10 and 36 million for supposedly spending too much in an uncapped year. This committee was chaired by Mara, who is in the same division. Talk about a conflict of interest.

  50. Jones and Elway have already disposed of their burner phones. So no record of their prenegotiations exists. Problem stems from Jones being so enamored with himself and every decision he makes, he just couldnt wait until the clock struck the appropriate hour before he released the news.
But is there really any wonder? Just listen to him give an interview and you know the guy can’t put two thoughts together. Regardless, the man is financially successful, I’ll give him that.

  51. Whatever… Non story either way since the only person less available to answer questions about their policies or positions is Hillary Clinton. At least we know where Brady (and Trump) stand………

  52. The league office has not been to our stadium …
    —————-
That’s the whole point Bozo. The NYJ and NYG never even get looked at by NFL HQ. Now, we’ll see about DAL.

And, yes, NYJ’s Johnson brought up money (he said words to the effect that had he known what Revis would end signing for with NE, he’d have offered more than NE did.)

  53. Lets see … Broncos cut Sanchez.
Sanchez’s agent calls other teams the minute he is cut which he is suppose to do.
Broncos fax machine is still not working properly and the list gets into the league office late … seriously nobody cares besides who really wants Sanchez?

    _________________

Last I knew league office reps hadn’t destroyed anything but their own credibility at Arrowhead. Obviously you’re a Jets fan, I’m a Giants guy, if you don’t think our teams, the cowgirls, the colts and a few others get off light you haven’t been paying attention.

  55. We’ll find out the situation I’m sure, but honestly…punishment for signing Sanchize? Punishment should be that you lose a 5th round if he doesn’t play at least 2 games.

  56. if Woody Johnson had said, “We’d love to have Darrelle back………for $5 a season”. Is it still tampering? Johnson never brought up $$$$$.

    That’s not true.

“Darrelle is a great player,” Johnson said. “If I thought I could’ve gotten Darrelle for that (money that New England gave him), I probably would’ve taken him. It was our best judgment to do what we did. Darrelle is a great player. I’d love Darrelle to come back.”

    Found at nj.com

This was textbook tampering, it may have affected Revis’s negotiations with the Patriots, and the Jets ended up getting him when all was said and done. For this, the Jets got a slap on the wrist.

Back when the Jets’ kicking balls were found to have been tampered with, the NFL punished an equipment guy and that was the end of it. Nobody argued that a kicker “must have known” or tried to impose a 1/4 season suspension on him.

Oh, and the Jets have also been caught taping signals.

This is why Pats’ fans think the Jets can get away with rule violations that other teams are slapped down for. There’s far too much inbreeding between the NFL front office and the Jets. It’s gone beyond bias and is obviously outright favoritism.

  57. The league office has not been to our stadium to destroy volumes of videotape for a slap on the wrist.

I have no idea what this is supposed to mean.

There’s an ongoing rumor that “the league office” went to Foxboro to destroy tape. Actually the Patriots were required to send all the tapes to the NFL offices in New York. Plenty of media types were shown the videos and found them pretty boring.

And then the tapes started leaking. This was an embarrassment to Goodell – he couldn’t control his own office! So he destroyed the tapes to cover his own inability to stop leaks.

It wasn’t a favor to the Patriots. Journalists had already seen what was on the tapes. And given what’s happened since, I don’t see how anybody could argue that it was a favor.

As for “slap on the wrist”, the Pats were docked a 1st round pick, a penalty no other franchise has had to endure. And then they were hit a 2nd time last year, for a fictional offense.

If Kraft were actually allowed to sue in an impartial court, there’s no way the punishments would stand. But because the NFL is a cartel, the owners gave up their right to sue.

What really confuses me is how Bob Kraft still views Goodell as his friend. Jonathan Kraft doesn’t.

  58. Actually Patriots fans could care less🙂

We don’t worry about inferior teams that aren’t going to be a threat to the 4 time World Champions🙂

The 6 time champs in Pittsburgh are laughing at you. So are the 5 timers in Dallas and SF.

  59. Hahaha never gets old seeing Patriots fans call their team 4 time champions. Fans of Pittsburgh, Dallas and San Francisco especially enjoy the reminder that you’re still not in the top 3.

  60. Honestly, even if they did tamper, who cares. It’s not like Sanchez is the Sanchize that Rex Ryan thought. Sanchez is known more for running (then fumbling) into linemen’s behinds then he is for winning. The league should just look at them funny for this tamper.
