Patriots cut Aaron Dobson

AP

Wide receiver Aaron Dobson’s time in New England has come to an end.

According to multiple reports, the 2013 second-round pick will be one of the cuts the Patriots make on Saturday to get their roster down to 53 players. The team is also reportedly parting ways with wide receiver DeAndre Carter, leaving Chris Harper and 2016 draft picks Malcolm Mitchell and Devin Lucien in contention for spots at the back end of the receiving corps.

Dobson only played in 24 games over his three seasons with the Pats as injuries were a consistent problem for him in New England. There was a report last week that the Patriots were shopping him in a trade, which was a pretty good sign that he wasn’t long for the roster one way or another.

Multiple reports also have cornerback Cre’von LeBlanc on the cut list. The Patriots only need to make 20 cuts from their 75-man roster on Saturday as quarterback Tom Brady and defensive end Rob Ninkovich will be serving suspensions to start the season.

  1. they should have cut him 2 years ago. Plays soft and doesn’t go up and catch the ball at the high point. Im really surprised he’s lasted this long.. Hope he saved his money.

  2. Not surprised, inconsistent player without a true desire to improve, almost as if he thinks he doesn’t need to. I guess he thought he was good enough they wouldn’t cut him, wrong. We’ll see if anyone picks him up, see if that’s a wakeup call.

  3. BB is the first one to tell you hes wiffed on alot of people ….with that said Dobson had to go after they drafted Mitchell and his effort has been excellent. If Dobson had that same elbow injury that Mitchell did he would be out for the year. Dobsons effort on the Brady int versus the Giants was just the latest example of him just not being all in…Bradys throw wasnt great but neither was his effort…Dobson obviously wasnt cut cuz of that one play but a culmination of injury prone seasons and failed efforts….he had to go……..

  4. The Patriots already had a talented team and they added the following free agents in 2016 and all were 1st round draft picks:
    Jonathan Cooper
    Shea McClellin
    Chris Long
    Barkevious Mingo

The Patriots also added the following pass catchers:
    TE – Martellus Bennett
    WR – Chris Hogan
    WR – Malcolm Mitchell

Not eligible. Too much time on the roster.
There is a list of who is eligible on the Pulpit website.

I think you nailed it … it was never about his skill set, he had all the tools to be a #1 receiver. That and what appeared to be a lack desire to learn a complex playbook (same as Ochocinco). A waste of talent.

  7. every other qb in the league does just fine with their wrs
as a pats fan, it is admittedly tiresome the level of expectation brady has for wrs.

it is one reason why free agent wrs do not want to play with brady

the first post here by a fellow pats fan who is a bozo on this analysis, is an apologist for brady at times

not every passing target needs to be hall of fame caliber

brady won 3 sbs with troy brown and david patten for chrissakes

  8. You trolls that keep saying the Pats can’t draft WR’s just don’t get it. They draft guys that have talent, but the Pats run a VERY intricate, read based system. Their offense is predicated on the QB AND the WR being on the same page and making a read DURING the play, not before. Therefore, not all these guys can grasp it. It’s not a simple pre-draft read and adjustment.
But as with many things with you Pats haters, don’t let the FACTS get in the way of your BS narrative!! Troll on and get some fresh air once in a while. Give your mom a chance to change your sheets.

  9. The int against the giants sealed his fate. Brady threw the perfect ball and dobson stopped running. Watch the replay.

I am sure he will be picked up some where else. We are too deep at WR this year.

  10. Another victim of Brady’s diminished arm strength. Can’t blame Dobson for Brady’s inaccurate lobs, he needs a QB who can accurately throw downfield to be successful. Unfortunately Brady is not that QB anymore.

  11. So they should have cut a 2nd rounder after his rookie year when he played in 12 games with 37 catches for 519 yds, 43+ YPG? Granted he has been a virtual no show since but the investment of a 2nd rounder and the promise of that 1st season called for the patience that was shown. Not fighting through for the ball and quitting on routes combined with not being able to stay on the field got him the pink slip he deserved but that doesn’t negate the 1st year that earned him the slack he got.

I understand how maddening the guy was but if folks could try not to sound like Jests, Hawks and fish fans going forward that would just be great.

Obviously never watched Dobson play much, you really are the south end of a north bound horse
